Like a great horror movie from the 80s

I have read all the previous books released by this author, and his stories never leave me indifferent.

This time, we have a short horror story but an incredibly realistic one. We are transported to a small town in Florida where everybody knows each other. Derek is the typical guy, still living with his parents and working in a burger joint, with no pretensions other than seeing the end of the next day. He has Terri, his childhood friend, who is basically his main support.
The day Beth starts working at the burger joint and a strange man appears in town, everything in Derek changes—even an inner voice appears, transforming him into a completely different person, a person that will help him in the difficult moment when he has to decide whether to kill or be killed.

The setting of the story is simply outstanding—you are transported into a great horror film from the 80s-90s. The tension builds in every episode until a huge climax that does not leave you indifferent.
The book is readable in a couple of sittings, and if you love your horror stories to be realistic and feature great character development, this one is a must for you. Just beware of the obvious trigger warnings this kind of story has.

Another fantastic book from Mike Minicky. The more he writes, the better they get!

This book has major horror movie vibes. The who done it all the way throughout the book. And not to mention the mystery between each chapter that makes you want to keep going through the story! Then that ending! I absolutely did not see that coming and I can't wait to read more.

Derek, a boy who never stands up for himself, starts hearing a voice in his head. He begins standing up for himself and others, but the voice is also a darkness. Does this darkness ruin him and his friendships, or does it save their lives.

From the start, this book builds this tense, almost Hitchcockian atmosphere: you can feel the dread creeping in, the way Hitchcock would use shadows or hidden corners to make you fear what’s just out of sight. Every character seems normal at first, but you know someone is hiding something… you just don’t know who, or when it will explode.

The story revolves around the breaking point of ordinary people pushed too far. One choice can change everything: kill or be killed. The tension is relentless, the kind that makes you hold your breath and double-check every detail because nothing is as it seems. The pacing is quick, the twists are sharp, and just when you think you have it figured out… you don’t.

What makes this book really shine is how relatable the characters feel. You suspect them, empathize with them, and yet the suspense never lets you relax. The ominous tone lingers long after you put the book down. The Last Straw is a perfect mix of psychological thrills, clever plotting, and that subtle, simmering terror. Short, sharp, and impossible to put down!

If you love psychological thrillers that keep you guessing until the very last page, The Last Straw is a must-read.

Mentally disturbing! Absolutely loved it. Derek and Terri are best friends and have always relied on each other. But something happens to Derek that makes him change. This was an adrenaline rush and read it all in one go. Just be sure to check the trigger warnings.
