Lying With Wolves by Cynthia Cooke is the sequel to her book, Running With Wolves which I loved. This series is filled with suspense, danger, love, and lots of shifter drama which makes it perfect.
It pretty much starts up where the previous book left off. Celia who is Jaya’s daughter, left the Colony when she got tired of Malcolm’s greed for power and his plan to bring Shay to the Colony and marry her to ensure his place as pack leader. Celia is living in Arizona with her two cousins Ruby and Jade running a cute little shop. But she can never be truly at ease here without the protection of the Colony. The demons known as Gauliacho are a constant threat. Even with the protection of her crystals, she still feels them getting closer, whispering. Celia has no idea what has happened back at the Colony. That Malcolm is not married to Shay and it is his quest for power that has inadvertently caused the death of Celia’s mother. Celia’s mother is the only one at the Colony that has the power to keep rejuvenating the crystals to keep everyone protected. With her death, all who live within its borders are at risk from the Gauliacho. Celia holds this gift as well with the crystals so Malcolm makes the trip to bring her back. But will she want to come once he tells her about her mother and his role in what happened? Will she believe him when he tells her he still loves her and that she is his priority now. That he has learned his lesson?
Malcolm Daniels knows he has to convince Celia that he truly loves her, that he has changed and learned what is important. His greed for power has caused so much pain. He really did just want what was best for the Colony, to bring it out of the dark ages with introducing technology and boosting their economy. But nothing went right. And he lost his Celia. They have been in love since they were children and he can only hope their connection is strong enough to convince Celia to give him a chance. But he has to tell her that her mother is gone. And that her death was largely his fault.
Once he does convince her to come with him back to the Colony to once again rejuvenate the crystals, neither are prepared for all the dangers they will face on the three day drive. And little did they know that her cousins are convinced that Celia is in some sort of trouble and that they are following them. And that someone else is also following them all. Someone that is a threat to Jade and Ruby.
Once they make it back to the Colony, there is so much that needs to be done. The threat has grown. There is also a funeral to attend, the funeral of Celia’s mother. Can Celia and Malcolm save the Colony? Can Malcolm regain the trust of Celia? And what about Jade and Ruby. They are human, even though their mother was a shifter. They know nothing of what Celia really is. This book is non-stop from the beginning to the end, and I loved every minute of it. Thank you so much to Cynthia Cooke, NetGalley and Harlequin Nocturne for giving me the opportunity to read this book. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
“The life she had yesterday was not the same life she had today. Today he was all she had to hold on to. And right now he was what she needed.”
A very enjoyable read with wonderful characters, second chances, danger, wolf shifters and mysterious forces. Celia Lawson just wanted her freedom, and to heal her heartache. She ran form her packs home to the desert of Arizona to start a new life. She had a shop some family and yet she was still basically a prisoner. She couldn’t step outside without great fear, the shadows whispered and screamed at her. Her use of crystals the only thing that kept her safe hidden behind the glass doors. She heard them even with her protection. It was still better than what she would have had to face at home, watching the man she loved married to another. Malcom had tracked her across the country. He had to bring her back to the pack, they would die without her ability to rejuvenate the crystals and keep them all hidden. He had to bring her back, face the unforgivable truth of what he had done and try to win her back. What he had done was so awful he knew once he told her the truth, she would hate him forever. He had to save his pack, to give something what what he had taken. Things are complicated by a stalker, two wild cousins, and some very stuff old geezers who are hell bent on keeping to the rules no matter what. The town is stuck in an old pattern which may be their doom. I really liked this author pacing and especially the way she wrote the woman. These women had some serious reasons to be catty to each other. I expected them to hate, screech, and tear at each other. I expected it because it is so common in books, not this one. Ms. Cooke wrote them respectful, intelligent and believable. Bravo ! Finally a romance that didn’t read like a cheesy TV reality show. I have my eye out for more work from her she is an artist to watch for this reader.
After being betrayed, Celia Lawson, left the colony to build a new life for herself, but with demon forces invading, the colony needs her to return home for only her powerful magic can save them and the man she loves in this enthralling shifter romance.
This fast paced and smooth flowing plot enthralls readers with a fascinating and refreshingly different werewolf concept. Cynthia Cooke brings the story to life with well written scenes and details that capture the imagination and well orchestrated suspense and action that invite the reader to join the strong compelling characters in their fight for survival and love.
Celia’s never stopped loving Malcolm, but his betrayal in the name of power and the good of the pack cuts deep and Malcolm has a lot of work ahead of him to win back her trust no matter that the bond between them is as strong as ever. The reader can’t help but get caught up in their drama filled and spark flying story as Celia is a wonderful heroine in that she continually surprises the reader with the way she reacts to different situations and Malcolm is a rare male indeed, especially for an alpha werewolf.
Spine tingling anticipation builds throughout the story as the danger escalates from the demon forces that continually attack the couple while they try to reach the colony and if that’s not enough, there is another enemy on their tail that they don’t know about. Political stands and old traditions are also a source of drama and spice with lots of conflicts arising throughout the story.
The author’s werewolf world is full of captivating characters and has fascinating elements and an intriguing history. I was completely caught up in the story from the very beginning and even though I haven’t read the first one (I will taking care of that while I await the next one), I had no problem figuring things out, although it is my recommendation to read them in sequence if possible to get the full impact of the some of the events that take place in this one. - Eva
The next book about wolf shape-shifters who live in the Colony has a very emotional beginning for the hero and heroine, and danger quickly enters their lives before long and never lets up. A cleverly inventive world has been constructed by Cynthia Cooke for the large group of characters in this story, where their abilities are unique along with their background. The enemies that are relentlessly seeking these shifters are also one of a kind, and they are not about to give up their pursuit. Physical threats along with intense emotions make LYING WITH WOLVES exceedingly captivating.
Though Celia Lawson was born a wolf shape-shifter, she left the safety of the Colony after Malcolm Daniels broke her heart when his position as pack leader was more important than her. She now lives in the Arizona desert, a place much different from the lush forest where she once lived with many other shifters. The Colony offered protection from humans plus the shadowy demons that want to destroy them. Although she enjoys her new career, Celia lives in fear of being discovered by either group. So far, luckily no one has seen her shift, and she uses her magical gift as the Keeper of the crystals to remain hidden from any demons.
Catastrophic events back in the Colony force Malcolm to visit Celia, as her skills with the crystals are needed or all in their pack may be doomed. When she sees him again, all she can think about is how much he hurt her. Malcolm knows some of his past decisions caused much suffering for his people, and he would like to make amends to everyone he hurt. After Celia is told about the circumstances back home, she does agree to accompany him yet feels there is no hope for them to ever reconcile. Malcolm wants her back in his life, but first they will have to survive any demon attacks in order to have a potential future.
Sometimes an individual will make a choice that seems like it will have a positive outcome, but unfortunately how the situation plays out is entirely opposite. Malcolm made some terrible decisions in the previous book featuring the shifters who live at the Colony. Though it would enhance your knowledge to have read the preceding story, plenty of facts are given in the current book to make everything clear. Now this tormented hero is on a quest to turn his wrongdoings around if possible. Any scenes where the past and present collide are always packed with lots of stress and sincere reactions, and often these moments only add more tension to the relationship of Malcolm and Celia.
There is much passion between these two, yet the pain he caused her cannot be easily erased, even after they let their lusty desire control their actions. Many scenes convey the true feelings this couple has for each other without words, and these moments reveal concern and devotion. How Malcolm and Celia respond when numerous shifters are against them proves just how much inner strength they actually possess. Quite a few secondary characters are crucial to what ultimately occurs, and it was good to see so many familiar faces amongst the new ones. Cynthia Cooke makes her shape-shifter world original with creative plots and diverse characters. LYING WITH WOLVES has imaginative ideas, unexpected danger and emotional conflicts.
. Following Malcolm Daniel's bid for power and position within the pack which includes his marrying a shifter from outside the Colony, a shattered Celia Lawson packs up her tattered heart and moves away. Opening a shop with her human cousins far away from the Colony with no plans to ever return. Colm's bid for Alpha fails and the changes he has made has caused a rift in the Colony. Now he comes looking for Celia with news that Celia's mother has died and Celia as the last Crystal Keeper needs to return to home and take over as the Crystal Keeper and recharge the protection crystals. The barriers around the Colony are weakening and all the residents are in danger, both from the Shadows and the chaos taking place within.
Fast moving and emotionally charged with enough secrets and twists to keep you guessing to startling end. I must admit I was surprised. This is a very enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more of Cynthia Cooke's work in the future. She has a style that keeps you on edge throughout theentire story.
There's certainly an amount of tension in this novel and there are lots of scenes that are filled with emotion. However, this book came across to me as singularly "flat" -- just didn't have the "wow" factor that I have come to expect from this author. The heroine was a magical shifter and a woman with some serious axes to grind with her ex. That she put herself at risk was not something a mature woman would do in light of the serious nature of the demonic enemy that she knew would stalk her with intent to destroy her. I found her constant upset to be wearing at times. Not that recovering from emotional betrayal is ever easy. It's not, and the hero definitely put her interests and well-being last in his priority list. He, also, struck me as one who wasn't nearly as "alpha" as I had come to expect from a pack leader and was one who resorted to manipulation and scheming to achieve his goals. I just had a hard time keeping my interest here and felt that the resolution of the crisis was somehow late in coming after being teased along for so many pages. This may say more about me than about the book, but three stars rating is about the best I can do.
I do love reading a good paranormal romance. Heck I enjoy reading almost any paranormal romance. There is just something about the 'others' living and loving among us that sets my imagination afire. So needless to say, I enjoyed LYING WITH WOLVES.
The main characters, Celia and Malcolm, have their issues, some rather large ones, that they need to overcome before they will be able to rebuild a real relationship. And I enjoyed watching them face and try to overcome those issues. I found however that it was a couple of secondary characters that really stole the book.
Ruby and Jade are Celia's cousins and totally unfamiliar with their bloodlines since their mother died when they were young. Being worried about Celia, they follow her when she heads back to the Colony. I found them to be spunky and totally loyal to each other and Celia. I really hoping that they merit their own book.
LYING WITH WOLVES is an easy to read book but other then the twins, I didn't really find anything that stood out from the other in this genre. Fun to read if you like paranormal romance but not one I would recommend that you rush out and buy.

Cecilia has been removed from her family and home in the colony and must exist as a werewolf in the human world. A powerful crystal keeper she is soon called back to help fend off an attack on her home. Betrayed by her love for Malcolm, they must learn to trust and love again in order to survive.
"Cooke’s story combines good mythology for the wolf shifters and a complex relationship between Celia and Malcolm. Celia’s motivation for running away is clear, as is Malcolm’s desire to bring her home and begin anew" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).
