The inspiring, fictional story of a spiritually challenged woman, Faith McCormack who vows to take everything with her when she dies. Unfortunately, cryonics leaves her cold but the thought of bequeathing her vast fortune to herself, to her reincarnation, becomes an obsession. She reasons that if the Tibetan Buddhists can find the Dalai Lama's reincarnation 13 times then surely, for a very large sum of money they will agree to find hers once…
Faith is a commodity trading legend. Her behavior is also legendary but not in a good way. Tenzin is a solitary meditator, a gentle, western-born, Tibetan Buddhist Nun. They are thrown together by a prophecy that is smuggled out of Tibet. Through tears, tantrums, and laughter Tenzin teaches Faith about meditation and compassion and Faith teaches Tenzin about stepping out of the shadows.
An unputdownable West tries to buy East story with heart and humor. This book has the blessing of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Sogyal Rinpoche.
Pretty standard combination of author, geologist, radio host and producer, standup comic, senior executive, business owner, inventor, also father and husband roles in a nuclear family... we had a few meltdowns but shared and still share, a lot of love and laughs.
If you're looking for a good read don't miss out on Daniel Prokop's latest novel, Taking It With You. Daniel has come up with a unique concept. When hard-nosed stock trader Faith McCormack discovers she is terminally ill, she is angry. Just as she is ready to begin to enjoy her life and wealth, she is destined to lose both. But Faith is a winner and a small matter like dying is not about to get in her way. With the help of friend and lawyer, David, she sets out to find a way to leave her wealth to her reincarnation. In order to achieve this she must enlist the help of the Tibetans. Although this story is told in an omniscient style, Daniel has still managed to create intimacy and great insight into his characters in a whimsical way. Faith is horrible beyond most people's imagination, but is, I suspect, a reflection of many real-life traders. Daniel paints a picture of two diverse ladies: Faith; and Tenzin, the delightful nun charged with helping her. He also accurately paints a picture of life in India, Tibet and the USA. If you want to have a laugh and enjoy what is ultimately an uplifting story, this is the book for you. Highly recommended.
Intoxicatingly delicious, inspirational read. I found this book hard to put down and go to sleep at night. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think there is a little Faith McCornack and Tenzin in everyone. Highly recommend.
I loved reading this book. It is an original, humourous and well thought out tale of materialism meeting spirituality. The compassionate treatment of the inevitable misunderstandings is delightful, and the overall message is inspiring. A great read.
Highly recommended. A clever plot with appealing characters, plenty of humour and a message of hope. I honestly stayed up all night and read it in one sitting. It was worth it.
One of those rare reads that are just UN-PUT-DOWNABLE! (literally...even in the shower!) The characters are varied and interesting, which makes the story compellingly convincing, even when written with such wit and humour. I found some of the insights into Faith's character almost excruciating, yet had to laugh out loud so many times...friends and family left utterly intrigued at what had hooked me so engrossingly. Behind the humour is a profoundly moving tale of one woman's journey of self discovery and, dare I say it?...Enlightenment, in a fascinating and contemporary environment....a trip I thoroughly enjoyed making, with Faith, and the author, as my guide. The book and it's central ideas have stayed with me long after the first flush of joy I gained from reading it....I hope you enjoy it too.
What an inspiring book that makes you look at your life and choices. I especially loved reaching the next chapter each time to read the quotes which many rang true to my beliefs. A wonderful book that I would encourage everyone to read. I shed a few tears thru a few chapters.
I really liked the story, the characters were interesting and the plot original. But I thought the writing could use some editing. There was too much telling rather than showing, and the writer would go off on 'clever' descriptions in a way that took you out of the story.
I really loved this book! It begins with two humorously extreme views of the world which it seems couldn't possibly coexist within the same covers, but the author brings them together beautifully.
It is also surprising how the book starts off as a funny, light novel but draws you in and delivers an important and powerful message in a delightful way.
The book already has had me following up to read more about the people and organisations mentioned and I hope it inspires many more people to do the same.
I was drawn in by the author's ability to paint every scene and possibly (I like to think) read his mind on how he wanted us to 'see' it. I found the story thought provoking which is why I occasionally put it down to think through how it might relate to my own life.
'I love it! Original, funny & inspiring!' This is a totally biased review because I wrote this book and it has taken me 12 years to bring this story to you. The feedback from readers so far is fantastic - :
"Have just finished reading the book...and it is absolutely brilliant!! So, So Good!!! ... Couldn't put it down even in the shower..only got a few pages soggy!! ...best book I've read in ages." N Morrison.
I hope you enjoy it and share it with friends and family. This book has the blessing of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Sogyal Rinpoche, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche and others. There is a prophecy in the book about the 'chains of the dragon melting from the land of snows.'
The story was good, but i wanted to see the finding of Faith reincarnated. It ended too soon. After all, it was advertised/ titled, taking it with you. She set everything up, but we never saw her enjoying her new reincarnation.
Lots of tense errors. Needs a good editing.
NB If Tibet isn't free yet, i support it's freedom :)
