An imprisoned fae. A disgraced hunter. An enemy haunting their nightmares. Morwena has nearly forgotten what freedom feels like. Imprisoned by day for the fae blood in her veins and doomed by night to wander the dreams of strangers, she’s resigned to her lonely existence. Until she stumbles across a fae hunter with the darkest nightmares she’s ever seen…a hunter who sees her. Even with his threats and distrust, Morwena can’t bring herself to leave him behind. But when he appears in her prison and demands she follow him north, she’s not sure what to think. Damir has enough problems plaguing his life without a fae invading his dreams. But as long as she’s there, she might as well be useful. Dani’s new friends, the Luminaries, are in trouble. While Dani and her husband try to keep them alive, she asks Damir to search for help. After everything he’s put her through, he will do anything his sister asks…even if that means kidnapping the fae woman he’s spent months trying to get rid of. They make an unlikely a hunter trying to atone for his past, and a fae unsure of her place in a world that’s forgotten her. But no one knows better than Morwena how deadly nightmares can be, and she’s not sure she can take on this enemy alone. Especially when this conflict reaches far beyond a single fae with a grudge. Fighting this battle will push Morwena back into a past she’s fought to overcome…and into a fate she’s tried to outrun. Can she convince Damir to trust her before it’s too late? And can Damir accept the truth of what he’s asked Morwena to do?
Legends of Emyr is a New Adult fantasy series for readers who love dark folklore, spice free romance, and enduring hope. Perfect for fans of Sarah K. L. Wilson, W. R. Gingell, and Kenley Davidson!
Damir is learning to listen to his newfound conscience, and has mostly left behind his life as a monster hunter. He is haunted by his betrayal of his sister Dani. He struggles with it in nightmares until a girl begins showing up in his nightly dreams. He knows what she is, a deadly nightmaiden, who feeds off of fear and terror of dreams. Except, why is she helping him by bringing peace to his dreamscape?
Morwena is a krisky, a dream walker. Having escaped a life of being trained to twist and destroy sleeping minds, Wen promised herself she would help 8 people sleep free of terror every night. When she randomly ends up in Damir's nightmares, she's intrigued by the handsome and most fierce hunter of Byransk, who she knows by reputation.
Damir can see her, which should be impossible. He tries to kill her the first night, but eventually over months they establish a truce. When the Luminaries need rescuing from an evil krisky, Damir volunteers to find Wen in the real world and bring her to defeat the other.
The world building is, as always, fantastic. Damir and Wen are both broken but determined to be better people. Their mistrust yet growing feelings make for a slow burn romance. Simpson handles emotions with a masterful touch. Deep layers of motivation and secrets are peeled back a bit at a time, making this story hard to put down.
Many characters from the previous book are central to the plot. This is best read after Memories of Blood and Bone where Damir's character is fleshed out in it. This is fantasy at its best.
I recommend it it for fans of Morgan L. Busse's The Ravenwood saga, also about a dreamwalker.
I received an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts expressed within are my own.
I was so excited to see my eARC for this book in my inbox and I lost no time diving into this long anticipated book! It was amazing! It lived up to all my hopes! I love how much Damir has grown and seeing him start to heal was everything I needed. Wen is precious and I love her. The relationship between the two makes my heart so happy! I definitely joined Greer and McCoy in cheering for the couple. :) I couldn’t stop reading once I started and stayed up way too late and was thoroughly distracted at work until I finished. I was completely swept up into the story like I am with all of the Legends of Emyr books. I think I’m now due for a re-read of all of them.
I wasn't sure how I could love Damir's book as much as I loved Dani's, but I was absolutely engrossed in this installment of Legends of Emyr! The dynamic between stoic, stubborn Damir and sweet, compassionate Morewenna was so fascinating, especially since he can feel her emotions and she can experience his dreams. They have no choice but to face their traumas together, but both are determined to cling to as many secrets as possible. And the one-sided enemies to lovers aspect is absolutely perfect.
This was not just a romance, though. The world of Emyr is very vivid, and it is so fun to discover the different types and their abilities, as well as the politics surrounding them. The tale is action-packed with high stakes and lovable side characters. I can't wait to add this installment to my bookshelf!
Note to more sensitive readers: There is fantasy violence and exploration of past traumas (also, kissing).
I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
I was not sure I was going to enjoy Damir’s story, but I loved it more than even Dani’s! (And I reaaaaalllly loved Dani’s)
My favorite things: SLOW BURN romance, brooding MMC (but trying and succeeding at being a better person), unrequited love from the FMC and she thought she had it hidden so well🤣, kiss-me-so-they-don’t-see-me moment ( ah, those never get old for me), MMC very manly and protective, quite swoony by the end!
The world here that Simpson has created is fascinating, and I love all the different types of magical people/creatures.
I really enjoyed this pacing in this one, and the plot. Near the end, Wen’s logic was a bit hard to follow, but it was wrapped up very nicely, and all made sense at the end.
Our main characters Wen and Damir are very lovable, and I enjoyed that it was mostly Wen’s POV, but we got some Damir in there too.
I’m so glad I gave this series a chance. I actually dnf the first book, because it dealt heavily with grief, and it just got to be too much for me, but the second book sounded more up my alley, and I loved it (it dealt with depression, and got heavy a few times, but didn’t bog the story down for me), and this one, the third story, has a lot of depth, but never once felt heavy on one thing, and I stayed up way too many nights reading because I could not put it down.
💯 recommend this book!
Thank you dear author for the ARC copy! All opinions are my own!
Content: clean, mild to high mild violence, no spice, no swearing
Side note: this is my third ARC in a row that I’ve read, and they all have been 5 stars! That has never happened to me!! Other two were Ties of Death by Constance Lopez, and Ties of Starlight by Celeste Baxendell! I have one more arc to read by Celeste, so most likely will be four 5 star arcs in a row. 💕💞
Dream magic, a scarred hero seeking redemption, a compassionate heroine, and a beautiful romance—what's not to love?
This entire series is utterly enchanting. And while this third book didn't feel as emotionally driven as the first two (probably because Damir is so gruff and Wen is far sweeter than the previous two heroins, in my opinion at least), it had everything else Blood and Bone and Salt and Stone did. The plot was intense but softened by humourous moments, the characters were engaging and relatable, and I especially loved the reappearance of beloved characters from past books and the dual POV format used in this one.
I do hope there are more books to come in this world, as their are certainly more villains to be defeated and more stories to be told here.
If you're looking for a clean read with fierce, complex characters and an immersive world, then this book is for you. However, I recommend you read at least Memories of Blood and Bone first. While the two books can certainly stand alone, I think one can better understand the male lead better if you read that book first.
* I received an ARC of this book from its author and am leaving this honest review of my own free will.
Memories of Truth and Terror by Maegan M Simpson ✔ A dream-walking fae ✔ A fae hunter ✔ She falls first... he falls harder ✔ A mission to fulfill ✔ Swoony romance, just kisses (no spice) Genre: Fantasy One of my favorite reads so far this year! And Damir and Morwena are one of my favorite couples! Damir has been trying to get Morwena out of his dreams for months until an urgent request from his sister has him kidnapping her instead... Love, love, love this book! I've always been intrigued by dreams as I personally have very vivid ones so this book was right up my alley! It is a bit dark with all the nightmares but hope always shines through. And I appreciate that the characters are a bit older (Damir is 28). A great mix of epic fantasy and romance. Highly, highly reccomend this series! Book 3 in the Legends of Emyr series, best read in order (Start with Memories of Salt and Stone!) Favorite characters: Damir and Morwena (I just can't choose between them!) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ARC (publishing March 21), all opinions are my own
This story exposes the depth of fears, guilt, and shame that often haunt us at night. It breaks your heart, the pain and sorrow carried by the characters. And yet, Maegan Simpson has woven this shimmering silver thread through her story again of hope. Of choosing to love and build a different future instead of being defined by the horrors of the past.
I loved this redemptive story. I cried so many times, but I loved the powerful way that love, peace, and hope are the real victors in the end.
And I am waiting on the edge of my seat for more books in this series.
Another delightful and exciting read. Once again Maegan deeply envelopes you in the world she's created. It doesn't take long to get used to the new, broader, world of overnight life as well, which makes for pretty relentless action. Her clever writing takes an internal landscape and makes it physically understandable, allowing you to enjoy the action and romance. This kind of writing endears the broken characters to the reader and we identify all the more with their human struggles. Nice work, Maegan!
I received an ARC of this but I leave my honest review here of my own free will.
There are some authors whose books stay with you long after you've finished them, and Maegan is one of them. Her world building is wildly imaginative, her characters are relatable and her stories are interesting. I can't wait for the next installment of this series.
Another great book in this series! It has major spoilers for the previous books, but at the same time if you like me did not remember what happened in the last book that’s ok because it’s stand enough alone as long as you don’t mind spoilers.
