READ THE OFFICIAL CONTEST Athletes are respected because they inspire people from all walks of life. In Game Changers, author Dan Gold presents the stories of some of these extraordinary sportsmen and sportswomen who not only left a mark in their respective sports but changed the world through their resilience, determination, leadership, and perseverance. Serena and Venus Williams' rise to fame came at the cost of training every day on subpar courts while navigating economic hardships as they grew up in the gritty neighborhood of Compton, California. Soccer superstar Lionel Messi was eleven years old when he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. Apart from being exemplary athletes, soccer player Marcus Rashford and tennis player Naomi Osaka have also been fierce advocates for change. AFL footballer Ben Cousins and soccer legend Maradona went through their own redemption arcs.
Game Changers is a book any sports fanatic would love.
As someone who grew up as a competitive athlete and is now a mom to kids in youth sports, "Game Changers" really hit home for me.
I’ve been on both sides of the field, chasing goals myself and now watching my kids learn how to win, lose, struggle, and grow. What I appreciate most about this book is that it goes beyond highlight-reel moments. The author does a really great job showing that real success in sports (and life) is built on things like discipline, character, and learning how to respond when things don’t go your way.
The stories are engaging and relatable for teens, but the lessons apply to all. They reinforce values I want my kids to internalize early: effort over outcome, growth over ego, and perseverance when motivation fades. I also love that the book doesn’t talk down to young readers, it respects their intelligence while still being encouraging and accessible.
This is the kind of book I’d feel good about putting in a locker bag, gifting to a teammate, or reading alongside my kids to spark meaningful conversations about goals, setbacks, and what it really means to be a “game changer.”
Highly recommended for young athletes, parents, and coaches who care just as much about character as they do performance.
I’m always on the lookout for books that genuinely inspire kids without talking down to them and this one truly delivered. This book goes beyond sports and taps into the mindset behind perseverance, resilience, and character. While the stories are rooted in athletics, the lessons translate beautifully to academics, relationships, and everyday challenges teens face.
What I appreciated most is how accessible and motivating the stories are. The examples show that success isn’t just about talent, but about effort, discipline, and learning from setbacks. As a teacher, I could easily see myself pulling passages from this book to spark discussion or encourage a student who’s feeling discouraged. As a mom, I felt confident recommending it knowing it reinforces values like accountability, grit, and integrity.
This is the kind of book that can light a fire in kids who need encouragement, direction, or a reminder that growth takes time. 5 stars!
Accountability, leadership, resilience, respect, authenticity are common themes throughout the lessons and stories in this book. As a parent of young athletes this was a great resource and teaching tool for my middle school age kids. There are a lot of practical applications, the stories are short and to the point and Gold does a reasonable job of staying on message, hammering his point home, then reinforcing the ideas in each chapter with ideas to put in the work via journal and reflection. I would have liked to see a wider spectrum of athletes used as examples and a wider range of sports stories to keep reader engagement, but overall I'd recommend this book to coaches, parents and the 10+ athletes range. It's a tool, a playbook, the work/effort you put into applying the skills here will determine what you gain from it.
Game Changers: Inspirational Sports Stories By Dan Gold is an excellent inspirational well written book. It is a compilation of stories about sports stars that are great examples for youth athletes and and coaches. I really enjoyed reading the book and my son enjoyed reading some of the stories with me. I look forward to reading more work from the author.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This one is a keeper! A fantastic book as a gift, or even just a reminder about all the incredible athletes out there -- and also, most importantly, it reminds us about their inspirational leadership, values, and very public lessons.
“Oh cool, that does look pretty good” responded his gym buddy.
“I’m gonna get it for my kid I want to get him in to reading more and I think this might be the ticket.”
I had just recently learned about this relatively new title and how it was gaining a lot of buzz on Amazon and just like that, the interest for this book carried over from online to real life. And now after reading Game Changers I can see why it is selling so briskly.
Dan Gold captures the backgrounds and fascinating backstories of a wide range of athletes, across many generations, weaving them together into a compelling collection that’s as beautifully written as it is inspiring. I was already familiar with most of the featured athletes and thought I knew their stories well, yet the book revealed many fresh and surprising details. Many accounts center on personal challenges and the perseverance required to overcome them.
I especially liked how the book is organized into short, focused and captivating biographies that are then grouped and tied together around themes like resilience, leadership, and goal setting. The author then ends these sections with thoughtful questions to reflect upon and then offers actionable suggestions to consider as well.
I've read my share of motivational and self betterment books and this is truly one of the best. In fact it has earned a spot on my Goodreads list of 5 star Books Great Enough to Gift . I have many friends and family I will be recommending it to for sure.
It’s an inspiring read and one that will resonate with tweens, teens and adults alike.
As a guy that's coached my own kids from the t-ball level to having volunteered as a high school coach in several sports, I’ve read my share of books on sports and coaching and this one really stands out.
The book isn’t just about hype or highlight reels. It focuses on how to deal with life through the stories of many sport star like handling setbacks, staying disciplined, dealing with pressure, and showing up when things aren’t going right. The stories are easy to relate to, and the lessons are practical. Players can read a chapter and actually take something from it, not just feel motivated for a few minutes.
From a coaching standpoint, the book reinforces the values most of us try to teach anyway: effort, resilience, accountability, character. things like that and it does that without preaching. I could easily see recommending it to some of the kids I see who are struggling with confidence, attitude, or consistency. I think coaches could also think about using parts of it to spark team discussions.
This is a really solid, useful book for teens and coaches and even parents. It reinforces the right messages and gives tools to really inspire and motivate. Great book!
