Monsters' Consorts #1

Monster's Bride

Rate this book
I went in search of miracles… and stumbled upon a monster instead. In return for the healing I was so desperate for, I just had to make one teensy weensie promise… To be his consort for, uh…forever. To say I wasn’t exactly thinking things through when I said yes was an understatement. And now I’ve been whisked away to a castle in a wintry wonderland with a ginormous, ferocious chimera. You know, lion-like head, goat horns, big freaking wings. Yeah. And he’s just deposited me on his bed, ready to start making good on that whole consort promise. Apparently forever starts NOW. Gulp.

Stasia Black

74 books2,094 followers
Stasia was born in Georgia, grew up in Texas, recently spent a freezing five-year stint in Minnesota, and now is happily planted in sunny California, which she will never, ever leave.

She loves writing, reading, listening to podcasts, and has recently taken up biking after a twenty-year sabbatical (and has the bumps and bruises to prove it). She lives with her own personal cheerleader, aka, her handsome husband, and their teenage son. Wow. Typing that makes her feel old. And writing about herself in the third person makes her feel a little like a nutjob, but ahem! Where were we?

Stasia’s drawn to romantic stories that don’t take the easy way out. She wants to see beneath people’s veneer and poke into their dark places, their twisted motives, and their deepest desires. Basically, she wants to create characters that make readers alternately laugh, cry ugly tears, want to toss their kindles across the room, and then declare they have a new FBB (forever book boyfriend).

Mad scientist’s monsters!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙❤️💚
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌍
Character development: 😊😅😟🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Hannah - she is a tiny woman who is deformed, in pain and dying. She uses a walker and sometimes crutches but knows within a few months she will be confined to a wheelchair. She has a crooked spine, a club foot and other ailments. She has a single mother who is an alcoholic and thinks she should just accept what she gets out of life. Though she was engaged to a nice and handsome man, she broke of her engagement and spent her life savings to go on a trip that she figured she might never return from.

The Hero: Abbadon - he is a bit of a Frankenstein monster, part lion, part angel, parts of other things. He has short fur, a leonine face, horns, claws and black angel wings with a light in his chest at times. He was created by a man he knows as “Creator/Father” who mistreated him and considers him as a failure. He also has brothers that are even worse than him whom he keeps in the dungeon of his castle.

The Story: Hannah has been traveling the world to go to three sites where miracles have been known to have occurred. She is on a quest to cure herself and is willing to die trying. She went to a temple in India, a church in Mexico and she just heard about a mountain in Alaska where a monster is known to be hidden in a cave, and a handicapped little boy went and came back cured. Though many have gone up and never returned.

Hannah makes her way up the mountain and finds Abbadon who has magic that can fix her, though he makes a deal with her to become his consort if he will fix her. He fixes her and takes her to his castle. This was a really odd story, and I liked it in some ways and didn’t like it so much in others. I have a bit of a problem with non-shifter supernaturals that look too much like animals. It is just a bit gross to me. Though I did like the characters especially the brothers. I also liked Hannah and how she changed so much in their lives.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Brian Meslar and Kelsey-Ann O’Dowd. The narration was good. Brian has a nice deep voice and does different characters in different voices pretty well. Kelsey-Ann has a great voice and was good at showing emotions through her voice.

Best monster romance I've ever read!!!! When this cover first showed up on my Instagram feed it caught my eye immediately and after reading the blurb I knew I had to read it! Let me start by saying the characters were amazing and the writing friggin fabulous! It had mythical characters like our monster Abaddon, a Chimera demon with a face that is fairly human, a nose is still somewhat leonine. His lip is split in the middle, and his eyes have cat-like slit pupils. Instead of skin, he’s covered with short fur, and sports a lion’s mane for hair and has beautiful black horns and beautiful black wings!( you know your girl Kat loves guys with horn's! their good for holding on!😂) Abaddon is a monster that his creater father made that went wrong and he has known suffering and pain at the hands of his own creator and he isn't the only one, he has two other brothers that he keeps locked up that are even worst then him and lately he has hidden away from them and others perfering to be alone but when Hannah a beautiful but deformed woman begs him to heal her crippled body he is drawn to her strength and beauty and he will heal her. He only wants one thing..... She must become his consort forever! This couple reminded me of both beauty and the beast and also a little of Taming of a shrew! Hannah is done with people telling her what to do so when Adaddon tries to collar and leash her and make her submit it starts a battle of wits and Hannah doesn't back down! She's sassy and smart and drives Abaddon fucking nuts but he can't get enough of her! The chemistry and sex is so hot!!! While he might look scary and is sporting a rather large 🍆 he is actually very gentle not to hurt her and even from the beginning he gives her great pleasure and like all cats he luvs licking up the cream over and over again😂 Yes this had a lot of steam!! And wait till you see what his wings can do!!!! Holy shit! I need one of these chimera's in my bedroom! I'd never leave!😂 And Abaddon's brothers were awesome secondary characters too! Especially Remus/Romulus the dude had me laughing more then once with his slightly demented demon humor and Thing his other brother about broke my heart with his pain. If you are or have ever been a prisoner of your own body you will get this book! Like Hannah I've been trapped for the last 25 years in a body full of pain every day. So I got why she was willing to do just about anything to be normal. Until Next Luv's💕💋

It’s sort of wild for once to let my body do the leading when it’s for something good. I sigh. For something wonderful, actually. Who knew bodies could do something other than betray you? - Hannah

Okay at first I was just going to give this one 4.5 stars..Then I read the bonus chapters for Abbadon and Hannah.. So 5 ⭐ it is!

I LOVE the concept of this story and series more than anything else.
The 🔥 helps too, I can't lie. But it's mainly about this world.

This Author could benefit from the help of a Thesaurus though.. Her massive overuse of the word "Gush" was unnerving to say the least.🤢🤢

I'm very interested in how all these things will play out for these brothers.. I definitely loved the way this one ended, and the Epilogue alongside those free bonus chapters. All the clues given though, I can't believe how shocked I was to finally learn who and what they actually were. 🤭

Another thing I love about this story is that there are tons of mythical, biblical, and horror tones here, in this story. Alongside a mystical, wintery backdrop of my hubby's homeland of Mother Russia 🇷🇺 and Slavic dialect. 🤩

I was definitely riveted by this tale. I hope to get an even better tale and reception with Thing's book.
I was very taken with him. I hope I love book 2, his story, even more.

Though the mysteries and reveals here surrounding their plight, and the plans of the Nephilum, have me extremely worried 😯

I would recommend this 1st book to this series..

I just couldn't get into it. The heroine was annoying and frustrating. The aspect of punishment as a sexual release is okay in some books, but in this one, it felt gross. I spent most of the time angry at the heroine because she was basically ungrateful to Abaddon and unwilling to be what he needed even though she made a deal. He did his part, healing her, but she couldn't do hers because she suddenly didn't like the terms? She gave her word. I hate heroines that break promises when things get tough. It shows a lack of honor.

ouch

I normally like this authors work but this book took forever to finish. It was sooooooo slow in the sense it dragged. It was repetitive. The h was unrealistic to the new life she had and expectations of monsters. I put it down so many times before I could skim the ending to finish it. The steam scenes were ok but just overall it was a no for me

The blurb was enticing for me. But I didn't passed the middle part of the book because it's just... Boring.
My three stars all for the first part of the book for I love Hannah.
Born as disabled, she got the spirit for one last chance to seek for miracle. Her journey come to fruition until a whisper of a cave in remote Alaska.

But life with the monster become boring when all they do just segs it up.
No chemistry between monster, yes he call him self monster, and Hannah up to 50% my read.

If you're into monster smut this is your holy grail, if you're into good writing or an actual plot, keep searching. I saw this book on Instagram as a fantasy recommendation, and it was disappointing to say the least. There's no story here. It's an unimaginative take on Beauty and the Beast IMO (although he's supposed to be a horseman of the apocalypse?!), but Belle is the equivalent of the unlucky maiden who gets stuck in the dryer (IYKYK). Sex as punishment also feels gross and BDSM without consent is also a no-go. Can I give minus two stars?

I didn’t see that it included BDSM when I read the synopsis the first time so that’s on me. 😅 not my thing.

Other than that, I did enjoy the book and am excited for Thing to come out.

Monsters galore in this first book by Stasia Black and it was sensational!
I felt so sorry for Hannah as she ventured on her quest to heal her broken body in any way possible. Her last attempt is to climb a mountain in the hopes of being made healthy. What she encounters on her quest will alter her life forever more.
Abaddon, a massive imposing creature, promises to heal Hannah but the price is she must remain as his consort forever. She readily and naively accepts and becomes Hannah-consort. After she encounters Abaddon’s brothers, Thing and Remus/Romulus she discovers she has entered the realm of The four horsemen and their history in the world.
Fabulous story but we will learn more about the brothers and Creator-Father? I certainly can’t wait for more 💕

4.5/5 stars!
"Cruel, perhaps. But I have never pretended to be anything more or less than the monster I am."
I am not an expert in monster smut by any means, but I thoroughly enjoyed this read! The spice was so good, and the story was so cute... you know if you think forced marriage and monsters are cute. Really though, I was laughing so hard at Monster's ideology on having a consort but damn... he's a monster in the bed. I just loved this storyline and it made it an easy and enjoyable read. I also love the disability representation, and I loved meeting Monster's brothers.

this was… deeply problematic

like I almost don't even know where to start

Okay I guess I'll start with the premise, which yes, is problematic. I knew that going in and was skeptical but there were a lot of good reviews. Maybe there was an alternative universe where it could have gone in a somewhat positive direction but it did not.

Long story short is that Hannah is dying and she travels the world in a last ditch effort in search of a miracle and eventually she ends up in a remote part of Alaska going to this cave up a mountain where a bunch of people have mysteriously disappeared never to be seen or heard from again.

Enter the monster, (who does not receive a name until very far into the book and I hate him and it so I refuse to use it) part man part angel part lion with a very frankenstein-esque background, and most importantly for our purposes, a frankenstein-esque psyche but with 100 times the rage and self-loathing and 10000000 times the horniness (and Frankenstein's monster was a little bit horny to begin with so that is saying something).

She begs for his help and the monster considers literally EATING her but then is like hmm but I guess I could heal her and then abduct her and keep her as my sex slave in my dingy castle. And that is when it really starts to spiral very far out of control.

Having the mmc be dominant in bed is one thing but the subjugation and humiliation the rest of the time and the CLEAR AND UTTER lack of respect he had for her as a human being was so bad. Like most of the time he isn't even thinking of her as a person he is thinking of her as a thing. That he owns. And wants to control. And we are supposed to excuse this because of his trauma?? if anything the trauma makes all of the flags a million times redder. He suffered abuse at the hands of his controlling, manipulative father and he copes with that by being controlling and manipulative toward Hannah now that he does have some power over his own circumstances.

AND THEN you discover that there are these horrifying screams of agony coming from the basement. What is going on down there you ask? The monster has imprisoned his brothers (who suffered the exact same abuse he did) in the dungeon and regularly whips them and barely feeds them. All of this, obviously, is very bad. And Hannah is horrified. But instead of realizing the monster is irredeemable she then makes it her life mission to release the two OTHER monsters from the dungeon because based on zero evidence she is convinced that they are absolutely redeemable with civilized potential. This whole part feels like "the warming touch and heart of a woman" cliche which would be fined if done differently but it doesn't feel fine surrounded by all the toxic masculinity.

Also, did I mention Hannah is not wearing clothes for 90% of the book because she's not given any and then the monster will literally shred anything she finds because he wants her naked. That is bad. But what is worse is at one point she's just running stairs at full sprint completely naked. That was very early on and honestly I could not get past it.

The monster physically abuses her and she runs but then comes back. And then (and unfortunately I absolutely saw this coming) surprise surprise she's pregnant. Now, I don't mind the accidental pregnancy trope when it is done well but the pregnancy was one million percent a thing to up the stakes so that, in her mind, Hannah had a reason for not leaving (although I would argue that opposite should have been true).

She does eventually get one of the monster's brothers to help her leave and she returns to her old life, which we have been getting very dismal pieces of throughout the story. Essentially, her mother infantilizes her because of her disability but also doesn't want to be responsible for her. And then there is Drew, her handsome but controlling (are we sensing a pattern here?) ex-fiance who liked to cart Hannah around like a "disabled girlfriend" prop so that people would think he was such a nice guy when really he was a selfish asshole who thought he knew what was best for Hannah and that she couldn't decide for herself. So Hannah shows up at her mother's house and apparently after being missing for months and her mom and Drew are just there and readily accept that she is back with essentially no follow up questions about where she was or how she was miraculously healed. Just like that, Hannah slips back into her old life with her mother telling her to get back together with Drew and get married like had once been the plan and Drew is also on board with that and just like that they are living together (I'm just confused--did no one file a missing persons case? Do they not want to know or care what happened? She had no luggage, nothing on her but some strange old clothes. No passport, nothing. You don't want to know where she was or how she magically appeared back in the US? You don't want to know how she was magically healed beyond the explanation of modern medicine? Make it make sense.)

The inadequacies of Drew and her relationship with him were frequently referenced throughout (mostly in comparison to the monster and how the sex was so much better with him than with Drew) and they are out and about at a party when Hannah realizes she doesn't want to be with him and leaves. Drew follows her back to the apartment for a confrontation and when he does, lo and behold, the monster appears. Drew shoots him a bunch of times and freaks out and Hannah I guess decides to go back to his terrible prison castle in the middle of nowhere with him because she's having his baby anyway so what the hell.

It's just like girl... were those your only two options????? Getting back together with your shithole ex-fiance who was emotionally manipulative or getting back together with your physically abusive monster of a baby daddy??? YOU ARE HEALED. you have your whole life ahead of you. Go somewhere new and start over far away from your terrible mom and boring job and the HORRIBLE men.

There is some other plot with her being pregnant and then making up and giving birth and such but I honestly did not retain much of it. There was an attempt made to convince the reader that the monster had had some therapy-esque revelations about his behavior and how it wouldn't be like that again but it seemed very unrealistic and I wasn't really looking for him to be redeemable as a love interest at all at this point.

What was interesting and memorable, however, was the epilogue, which revealed a game changing plot twist that would connect the plot of this book to the other companion books about the monster's brothers. I feel that I am going to refuse to read them on principle but I am curious so maybe I'll just read spoiler reviews of it to satiate my curiosity.

The single redeeming factor of this book was that I could really see that the author was trying to do something interesting with representing disability in a new way, through a different lens looking at Hannah's life and in what ways she did and didn't change after she was medically healed (her condition would have eventually killed her) but still physically had the same appearance.

This was a nice little monster romance. I really like the idea behind the story and the character evolution. Hannah was an excellent FMC. Sassy and past the point of taking anyone's shit anymore. I am looking forward to reading about the rest of the brothers and seeing the conclusion of some ominous business going on in the background.

Amazing monster romance! I have not read many monster romances but I really enjoyed this one! The ending was a cliffhanger so I look forward to reading the next book!

Hannah was in search of a miracle to fix her terminal illness but what she found at the end of the trail was a ferocious chimera! He is a beast in more ways than one especially in the bedroom but what he lacks is compassion and understanding when it comes to Hannah. But she is able to show him how to change his ways!

DNF -- No Warning for Offensive Material . . .

Having promised to be the monster’s “consort” forever, our heroine eagerly waits for the start of the kinky whipping while she is tied to the bed by a self-described monster who is then going to do nasty things with a whip while she squeals and … NO THANK YOU. I’m tired of kink being inserted in books like it’s no big deal. It’s highly offensive to me. I don’t like this stuff and don’t consider it “playful”. So a warning from the author about this kind of offensive content should be front and center. Please don’t treat this as commonplace behavior. It’s not my “normal” and I don’t want to read about it under any circumstances. There was no warning of any kind in my review copy so I could avoid it. A dom/sub theme definitely needs a warning.

Hannah (h), a disabled woman who is desperate to find a cure for her condition, encounters Abaddon (H), a massive and imposing chimera-like creature. Abaddon offers to heal Hannah, but in return, she must become his consort forever. Hannah agrees and finds herself whisked away to a wintry castle where she discovers Abaddon's dark past and the existence of his brothers. As their relationship develops, Hannah must navigate a world of supernatural beings, confront her own fears, discover Abaddon's troubled past and help him confront his demons, and strive to bring kindness and change to Abaddon and his brothers. The book explores themes of trust, redemption, and the power of love. It contains explicit scenes, BDSM elements, and explores dark and supernatural themes.

I've never liked having miracles for your disability. It feels too much like ablism to me. Like why couldn't she have stayed disabled? Then what's the point in having her disabled in the first place? It's already hard finding disabled representation, let alone a PHYSICALLY DEFORMED disabled representation. And the first one that I have ever read, and she's able bodied for 90% of the fucking book. So again, why? Don't dedicate this to all the disabled girlies when the disability is just a memory.

Also, it's a MULE that's infertile, NOT A DONKEY.

This dark romance is beyond captivating! Hannah and Abaddon are featured in this dark retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Both characters have strong personalities. Their story gave drama, steam, heart, twists, and emotions. I loved these two damaged characters and their story I can't wait to read more stories like this from Stasia.

This was a riveting read about a woman whom the world deems disabled and a monster who considers himself to be irredeemable. The two strike a bargain together, in return for his healing, she would be bound to be his consort forever. I have to say, I am a fan of monster romance so this one hit the mark for me. The spicy scenes were on point and the writing was intoxicating. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

Yoooo lmao. This book kind of seriously ate.
I did not expect who the monsters where to be who they were. That was a crazy twist. And honestly the lil epilogue got me.

I have like no words to say for this one because surely the story will develop more plot but honestly, even if it doesn’t I’m still not bad.

This was so good I could not put it down dude. Holy cow.

Monster’s Bride was just an okay read for me. It took me a little while to get into this story - although our MCs get hot and heavy pretty quickly, and even though I found the plot interesting, I just wasn’t that invested in our main characters Hannah and Abaddon. I found Hannah’s behaviours completely confounding at times, not to mention she never asks the important questions about the castle or the changes she notices after her healing, or a multitude of other things throughout the story - and I found myself getting frustrated with her willful ignorance. A steamy read for sure, that many may enjoy, however I prefer my romances to engage with a bit more feeling and emotion.

Hot mess

This book is all over the place. It was thoughtlessly written and lacked depth. The inconsistencies and bad writing drove me nuts until I gave up and called it quits.

I have to begin with the MC’s overly formal and archaic way of speaking to Monster when she first encounters him and begs for his help. My word, what a load of rubbish. It was so ridiculous and completely unnecessary, especially when the MC’s thoughts were the complete opposite. It was just bad writing.

There is a criminal amount of misused m-dashes—honestly, I’ve never seen anything like it—as well as a serious misunderstanding of what ellipses (…) are used for. Ellipses mean “there was more”, but it’s going to trail away into…

The MC made me think I was re-reading “The Princess Diaries” series. Mia Thermopolis is a fourteen year old freshman in high school, if you haven’t read them before. I loved them when I was around that age. Not so much now. This MC is just as silly, except Meg Cabot actually made Mia lovable. Stasia Black just isn’t in the same caliber, I suppose.

Disappointing that the promising storyline turned into yet another DNF book. Quantity over quality strikes again.

3.5 stars.
It's a slow start and I kept forcing myself to continue.
I like the world building a lot but man Hannah made me nuts.
The whole disability healing was cool. And I liked the inclusion of a heroine with a disability.
But the whole "how dare you be violent!" Thing when she's living with LITERAL horsemen of the apocalypse. Like he tells her he is Pestilence and has killed innumerable millions and no one has shown him a single kindness in millenniums and she's like "but you are so violent! Change! Right now!"
Give me a break.
She annoyed me but other than that I liked the other characters and the smexy times were ok, I could have had a bit more fun with monster sex but it was ok. I couldn't figure where other reviewers are getting the BDSM. I guess one scene with light whipping that doesn't cause pain, and a bit of bondage that's more about the kidnapping.

I wasn't really sure what to expect with this book, but WOW!

Hannah was strong enough to fight for her right to be treated as an equal, rather than a pet. Yet at the same time she showed Abaddon and his brothers what kindness could accomplish.

Abaddon was truly just a monster at first, but Hannah's acceptance of him, her empathy and simple lack of fear, showed him even a beast such as he deserved to be loved.

The sparks between these two, both in and out of the bedroom, were intense. Had my attention from page one.

Looking forward to the brothers getting consorts. And seeing if Creator-Father can break them, or make them stronger.

Loved it!.

Oh this was good! I really loved the description (and descriptive smut) the author used to describe everything just enough to create a hazy picture in our minds. This felt a lot like a Beauty and the Beast retelling with supernatural creatures and a hidden plot that might take a couple of books to develop properly. I had a feeling about Mikhail too.

I really enjoyed the scenes with Thing, Remus/Romulus and Abaddon trying to interact with Hannah. They were hilarious. Brothers are brothers no matter how dangerous they may be, and that was proven when Thing and Remus tried to work on their new table. Also, I almost cried when Thing said he had never had a real bed and so was making himself one.

Thanks to Booksprout for a copy.

Slight cliffhanger at the end that I was not expecting!

~All Hannah wants is to be healthy and if that means traveling the world for a miracle, she’s going to do it. She never thought she would stumble upon a monster. Abaddon hasn't ever met someone willing to trade for his help.. it’s always one sided. Now seems like a great opportunity to have his own consort.~

This went in a direction I didn’t see coming. Abaddon’s family was an interesting addition I wasn’t sure how to feel about.. especially with Hannah’s involvement. It was nice seeing a change in Abaddon throughout the book, I wasn’t a huge fan of him in the beginning.

Fun Beauty and Beast story

The Beauty/Beast trope is a favorite of mine, and this is an entertaining take on it. I really enjoyed the characters, the pathos, the humor and the tension. I thought the heroine came across as sanctimonious a couple of times, especially considering what the hero and his brothers had been through, but she was still likeable. It's A good story. I look forward to Thing's book.
