The Brannington Empire #2

Merciless Betrayal

Rate this book
Reagan Coughlin

I’d always known I’d never be part of his world, but I tried anyway.
And what should’ve been the happiest time of my life turned into Hell.
Back then, I didn’t know the true lengths a Brannington would go.
It’s why I’d fled and never looked back. Until now. Until I see him again.
I’d once thought that we were soulmates, but it had all been a delusion.
And now, it’s more than my heart I must protect. I must protect our child.
Cillian has changed from the boy I’d once known. He’s more dangerous.
And he’s out for more than blood. He wants to break me - heart and soul.
Only, they’re no longer mine to give. They’ve always been only his.

Cillian Brannington

She was considered beneath me by my family. I’d never given a damn.
Despite a foolish and desperate move, my grandfather enacted an evil plan.
I’d tried protecting Reagan, but I’d ultimately failed her, and I’d failed us.
Until ten years later when I come face to face with a ghost from my past.
She might be using a different name, but I would know her anywhere.
Her betrayal reignites a spark in a heart that I’d thought died alongside her.
And now love doesn’t fill me. Anger and retribution does instead.
I want to make her pay for her betrayal, but I’m not faultless in her eyes.
In the world of an eye for an eye, this battle might be a heart for a heart.

When a forbidden teenage romance turns into a great loss for both..

Flew through the second book in this interconnected series. @anisestorm has a great writing style and mixed with a fast paced story equals an amazing time. I would recommend reading the first book before this one, but also you can read it as a standalone.

"I'd never wanted anything more in life than I wanted her. No matter what consequences I had faced, I would've gladly taken them again and again for just another taste."

"I hate you, or at least I should, but the truth of the reality is that I really don't hate you at all, I said softly."

"Death, even when expected, always leaves behind unanswered questions."

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

This was my first time reading Anise Storm, and it took me a few chapters to really settle into the writing. Once I did, I found Merciless Betrayal to be readable, but unfortunately it didn’t fully win me over.

I’m very much in two minds about this book — I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. The MCs, Reagan and Cillian, were likeable enough on the surface, but I personally found them a bit flat and, at times, boring. Once they were reunited, far too much time was spent on Cillian hating Reagan, and honestly… I didn’t quite get why. He came across as a bit of a wet wipe to me, constantly focusing on how the last seven years affected him, with very little consideration for what Reagan had been through. In my opinion, he was a bit of an arse.

That said, this isn’t a bad book — it’s definitely readable — but there was just something missing for me, whether that be depth, emotional connection, or stronger character development.

Thank you for the ARC.

If you are looking for a mafia romance, love the second chance trope and is a sucker for yearning, this is the book for you!

I personally love it when you get to see a bit more of the initial love story with second chance romances, before the inevitable break. This book made me truly believe that these characters were gone for each other from the start. I was rooting for them the whole time. What a fun ride this book was!

This is the second book in this impressive series, and this is Reagan and Cillian’s story.
Reagan was never considered suitable for Cillian’s family, and his grandfather had a plan, which destroyed everything they has between them. Years later Cillian and Reagan cross paths again, and what he discovers tilts his world on its axels, and he is out for vengeance.
This is a well written action packed, emotional roller coaster, with family dynamics, friendships, heartbreak, secrets, loss, friends / enemies / lovers, forced proximity, second chances, survival, challenges, soulmates, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, twisted, and unpredictable, dark romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

OMG.
What the Brannington boys faced from their grandfather! WOW!
And Reagan, because of her relationship with Cillian.

You'll have a hard time believing your eyes!

Intense.
Scary.
Steamy.
Emotional.

It was hard to put this down once I started it.

Ciara was a joy.
The question is, can this "family" survive?

This is a truly dark romance, so check your triggers before reading.

Highly recommend!
Captivating despite the cringe-worthy moments!

Merciless Betrayal is not just a story about the mafia and power above all, it is a narrative filled with intense feelings, pain, difficult choices, and betrayals that leave lasting scars.

The protagonist, Reagan Coughlin, believes she has already survived the worst, only to discover that in this world no one escapes unscathed. What should have been a moment of happiness turns into a nightmare that forces her to face truths she would rather avoid. Throughout the novel, Reagan battles not only external enemies but also her own fears, doubts, and conflicting emotions. This inner struggle makes her feel real, vulnerable, and deeply human.

The book maintains a constant sense of tension: every decision carries weight, every word may hide a betrayal, and every act of love is accompanied by danger. Anise Storm succeeds in making the reader feel the characters’ anguish, anger, and confusion especially when love becomes entangled with control, power, and forced loyalty.

One of the most striking aspects of Merciless Betrayal is how it shows that, in a cruel world, even the most genuine feelings can become weapons. Betrayal does not always come from an enemy, but from those who once promised to protect and love. This makes the story painful, yet impossible to put down.

Is an intense, dark, and emotionally. It is not a light read; it is a story that challenges, unsettles, and captivates, making it ideal for readers who enjoy dark romance and imperfect characters who love deeply, suffer greatly, and make mistakes in a world where mercy does not exist.

Second chance romance!! Although it isn't my thing, I love reading it! Reagan & Cillian, fell hard but family didn't approve, teenage love ended due to an evil plan Reagan's family put into place. Cillian had to go, not only to protect her; but their child!
Then she comes back and he recognizes her, different name, but he could never forget her! But now he feels only anger!!!
Can they fix what Reagan's family destroyed??

Tropes:
🖤Dark romance
🖤Second Chance romance
🖤mafia family
🖤Forbidden romance
🖤Secret child
🖤Grief and loss

Merciless Betrayal Book 2 was great.

Reagan and Cillian's young start for an unlikely couple to fall in love.

Their story just warms your heart but will break it at the same time.

Believing that your first love is forever as we all have done.

Adding to this story murder and excellent sex, I think that you will enjoy this book as much as I have.

Please check all CW and TW before reading. Despite the fact that both Reagan and Cillian are young when they first meet they have dealt with some heavy things already in their lives that they definitely seem older. Then that night happens and my jaw was on the floor. My heart went out to Reagan. When these two both see each other again things become explosive!.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Merciless Betrayal by Anise Storm

Merciless Betrayal is an intense, emotionally charged read that keeps you locked in from start to finish. It leans hard into angst, loyalty, and broken trust, and for the most part, it really works.

The story thrives on tension. The betrayal at the center of the plot feels personal and heavy, and the emotional fallout is handled well. You feel the hurt, the confusion, and the slow unraveling that comes with realizing nothing is as solid as it seemed. The characters are messy and flawed, which makes their reactions feel real instead of polished.

Anise Storm’s writing is immersive and easy to sink into, especially during the emotional moments. The romance is turbulent and layered, built on complicated feelings rather than easy forgiveness. At times the pacing stumbles slightly, and a few moments feel like they could have been pushed a bit deeper, but it never loses its grip on the reader.

Overall, Merciless Betrayal is a strong four star read. It’s angsty, dramatic, and emotionally satisfying, even if it doesn’t hit full five star devastation. A solid choice for readers who love betrayal-driven romance and high emotional stakes.

Reagan would always be there for her twin sister, her mother was more caring and loving to Rowan. But then again she was the one that suffered and I was there to donate bone marrow when she needed it. Meeting Cillian was the best thing in my life. Until he had to return to Ireland during holidays and end of terms. We were soul mates, making plans for when we could be together forever. Except forever doesn't exist. Especially when my family is massacred thinking I was the recipient. Finding out that Cillian was part of the Irish Mafia, and my mom and sister paid with their lives because I loved a man above my status in life. Now I'm alone and taking my sisters identity and carrying an even bigger secret. Seven years I've managed until I'm found and now its not just me in danger. How will Cillian cope after grieving for the only light in his life. She's still alive. New name. A job she loved. A home she'd struggled to get but was her safe haven. Then came the ultimate betrayal, the secret she'd never got time to tell him. This is a story that just keeps giving. Reagan is a strong independent woman who's rebuilt her life after losing everything. Cillian only knew pain and loss. His grandfather made sure he followed the families tradition at any cost. Even when the cost is a life. But will he take what's his. Or will he finally find someone to fight for. I loved this story and can't wait for the next story

This was a good book. It had a good plot, one I hadn’t read before, it was slow placed but picked up towards the end. It was a fast easy read, with good amount of spice! I liked the FMC and her story. Would recommend this book!

Just when I thought the story couldn’t get any better! The beginning made me cringe a bit with the bullying, but the story had a good bit of smut along with drama and romance. Reagan is a strong minded protagonist who is willing to take a risk on the dark Cillian and the journey unfolds a risky path but love always wins ! If you haven’t read the first book in the series , it’s good to know this is a stand alone about other characters in the series . I received this copy as an ARC.

Note to self get book 1

Who doesn’t love a hateful grandpappy?!

We have grandpa the controlling a$$hole that lies and uses fear to get his way (we don’t like him)

Cillian and Reagan— we are rooting for them!! Soul mates from different worlds. He tried to save her from grandpa dumba$$ and I mean in a way he did but she lost. Soooo many paths could’ve been different had she told him more about her family.

Fast forward bit. When you find out the kicker you’ll understand the way he’s been for the longest. But you know that saying if it comes back it’s yours? Well they came back to each other and oh have the tables have turned simply because she never told him about her family and he didn’t tell her the main reason he was taking her away and soooo demandy about it.

HOWEVER!!! Things do work out, the growth and coming back to each other and grandpa having his issue. I was happy and immediately need more like now!

Highly recommend

The story of Cillian and Reagan has finally arrived, and I must begin by saying one thing it was devastatingly painful to read.

They met when they were very young, when their souls connected in a deep and unbreakable way. Cillian was a safe haven for Reagan; he protected her, supported her, and gave her a place where she felt loved and safe. With her, Cillian found light in his life, love, and peace. But that pure love they shared was cruelly taken from them.

The one responsible for everything was Cillian's grandfather, whom I already detested in the first book, but who in this one completely earned my resentment. His intervention was so ruthless that it led Reagan to fake her death to survive the terrible consequences he had caused. Believing she had lost the love of her life destroyed Cillian in a way that truly broke my heart. He fell into a dark abyss, becoming more lethal, colder, and consumed by pain after life snatched away his only light.

Reading about all the suffering caused by that man was profoundly heartbreaking. Now, seven years later, when Cillian thinks he's seen a ghost, he discovers the truth Reagan is alive and harboring a secret that will explode when he uncovers it. From that moment on, Cillian is determined to be a part of his daughter's life, no matter the cost.

For Reagan, nothing was easy. She believed she was doing the right thing, and once again, I came to understand her. Reading about how they both suffered during those years apart was devastating. Cillian resents her for faking her death and hiding her from his daughter; Reagan, for her part, also harbors resentment, because loving him cost her dearly and forced her to bear immense pain in solitude.

The reunion is not easy; feelings are now complex, filled with recriminations and open wounds, but beneath it all, that pure and sincere love that never died still exists, and together they must decide if they are capable of forgiving the past and giving themselves another chance.

In the end, they both understand that the past cannot be changed, but the future can be built. Cillian manages to open up completely, confess everything, and seek redemption. He gives himself to Reagan body, heart, and soul. She, in turn, makes peace with him, allows him to redeem himself, and also asks for forgiveness. Thus, they both give themselves to each other forever. Together they rise from the ashes of their love, overcoming the pain, the scars, and the losses, and manage to rebuild themselves as a family. The path wasn't easy; it was filled with deep wounds, but it was precisely in that suffering that they found true love, the kind that lasts forever.

And as if all this weren't enough, this book delivers a final revelation that left me completely shocked. My God, the third book promises to be a bombshell, and the wait is going to be endless. As for Grandpa, I can only say one thing I detest you with all my being, but at least you won't be a problem anymore. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

While summer break was going on, Reagan had to stay on-campus with her mother and sister. She would be beginning her junior year of high school in a public school. Despite her mother being headmistress of Summit Crest Preparatory School. The classes were too expensive so she had to ride a bus. She didn't care because she felt that the students were snobby girls and arrogant guys that looked down on anyone who wasn't like them. Reagan’s twin sister, Rowan, had it worse than she did, as she had an autoimmune disorder that made her ill frequently. Reagan did her best to help her mother at the school, and often became the target of several of the males who liked to taunt her.

One evening, a party was going on outside by the boathouse. Unfortunately, Reagan was present to make sure everyone followed the rules. When several boys tried to push her around and call her lewd remarks, Reagan couldn't take it anymore. She ran off into a spot in the nearby woods. Cillian Brannington followed her and tried to console Reagan. His efforts seemed to be genuine.

A whirlwind romance formed between Reagan and Cillian until they were caught by her mother. Cillian had to return to Italy, where he was required to learn the family business. Despite warnings from Cillian’s grandfather, the two decided that they were turning eighteen and could be with whoever they wanted. Cillian returned to school, but was unaware that his grandfather had watched him. Ronan was head of the Irish Mob in Italy. When Cillian answered his cell phone, Ronan told him to return to Italy or Reagan would pay. His grandfather hadn’t hung up when Cillian heard him give the order to “kill her when he gets on the plane.” Cillian didn’t tell Reagan why, but he convinced her to elope with him that night.

Reagan got up early and left a note to her new husband that she felt obligated to tell her family but then would meet him at the hotel. What Reagan went home to was the brutal murder of her mother and sister. Reagan changed her name to Rowan Lynch…and became the single mother of Ciara, Cillian’s daughter. 6 years later, Cillian is in NYC when Ciara accidentally runs into him. Looking at the little girl, Cillian realizes she looks like his mother. Now he wasn’t going to return to Italy without his daughter.

This is such a tragic romance novel. Two people who have been raised like polar opposites when it comes to money fall in love. The cruel world rips them apart, and yet, despite all the odds being stacked against them, that young love festers inside for years. I fell in love with Cillian just as fast as Reagan did. The betrayal by his grandfather broke him and when he found out Reagan was alive, he transferred the rage towards her. Reagan’s defiant nature to give up her daughter proves to be the light that breaks into his darkness. The vivid details of the emotional turmoil the pair endure make every moment of this story breathtaking. This is a series I am not going to put down. Anise Storm’s Merciless Betrayal has hit the top of my favorites list. Definitely worth a five-star score.

Merciless Betrayal is the second book in the Brannington Empire Collection and is the story of Cillian and Reagan. Reagan’s mother was headmistress at an exclusive private school, and Reagan lived with her mother and her identical twin sister Rowan in a small cottage on the grounds of the school. Rowan was not well, she required bone marrow transplants, which Reagan being her identical twin was her donor, she was almost always bed ridden so she needed to be monitored and if mother was busy that fell to Reagan, not that she minded she loved her sister. Reagan was also expected to help out with tasks at the school if her mother was busy with Rowan, this is when the rich, snobby students gave her a really hard time, all except Cillian, he followed her to her secret place one day when she was crying, and they became friends, they snuck around as much as possible. it wasn’t long before their friendship became something more, and their relationship soon turned into love and making plans for the rest of their lives after Cillian’s last year of school, that was until they were caught one night when they fell asleep and Reagan’s mother found them naked asleep together!
Cillian was sent home to his Grandfather he is the head of Irish mafia and has raised Cillian and his two cousins after they lost their parents, he was furious with Cillian to be with someone far beneath him in status he told him to immediately call it off, Cillian refused and tried to tell his Grandfather about the love he had for Reagan! The Grandfather found a way to deal with Cillian’s disloyalty and have him agree not to see Reagan again, but an overheard phone call changed how Cillian was going to manage to see Reagan.Almost 7 years later an older more bitter and ruthless Cillian is in New York again on a task set for him by his grandfather he bumped into a little girl holding a balloon, he looked down at her, beautiful red hair and when he looked into her face, he was completely shocked to see his own face looking back of him, same eyes, same nose, same mouth, a dark haired woman came to her and said something to the little girl who shook her head. They spoke and realised that she wasn’t her mother, her mother was working in the clinic we were in front of Cillian needed to know who her mother was because it was impossible, it could not be Reagan!
This is a fast paced book that will have you glued to the pages, as I was, and on the edge of your seat wanting to shake firstly the younger version of Cillian whose whole world revolved around Reagan, then the older, cynical full of hatred Cillian whose love was still there but circumstances meant he blamed her for something that was not ever fully in her control!.

Anise Storm once again delivers a captivating, dark mafia romance that had me hooked from the very beginning. Unlike the first part in the series, this time the focus is not on a power couple, but on a young, troubled couple whose forbidden love comes to an abrupt end due to violence, secrets and evil machinations, until they find each other again years later and must first overcome betrayal, secrets and their losses before they can find their happy ending. The plot is very well written, fast-paced and action-packed, full of violence, drama, suspense, danger and steamy love scenes. I liked both characters from the start. Their feelings, the tension and the sizzling chemistry between them were palpable throughout the book. The tropes of the story are:

- Mafia romance
- Dark romance
- Second chance
- Highschool sweethearts
- Forbidden love
- Hate-love relationship
- Class disparity
- Hidden Identity
- Secret child
- Close/forced proximity

Reagan Coughlin lives with her mother, the headmistress of Summit Crest Preparatory School, and her seriously ill twin sister Rowan on the school campus, where she is constantly bullied by the affluent students, except for Cillian Brannington, who protects her. The two fall in love, but both her mother and Cillian's grandfather are against their relationship. When Cillian defies his grandfather, Irish mobster boss Ronan Brannington, he threatens to have Reagan tortured and killed. Cillian convinces Reagan to run away with him, but Reagan returns home after their wedding night to find the slaughtered bodies of her mother and sister. To protect herself, Reagan assumes the identity of her sister Rowan and starts a new life with her unborn child.
Cillian is not as cold and callous as his cousins, even though he endures his grandfather's harshest punishments for his love for Reagan, but is devastated and broken when his grandfather tells him that he had Reagan killed. Cillian mourns her for years until he accidentally runs into her and her little daughter in New York. Now Cillian is filled with hatred for the woman who betrayed him by running away from him, faking her death, changing her identity and withholding his child from him...

I recommend this book to anyone who loves second chance love stories, gritty Mafia romance novels, star-crossed lovers, action, suspense, heart and heat, and I am looking forward to the next installment in the series.

I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.

In the second book of the trilogy, we learn more about Cillian, the cousin running the Irish half of the syndicate. Cillian was not his grandfather’s favorite. Cillian was probably the least favorite and was shown and told this his entire life. The only bright spot Cillian found in his life was this smart-mouthed girl at school. She didn’t attend the school but her mom was the head mistress.

Reagan had an interesting life. Her mother was the head mistress of a prestigious school but Reagan wasn’t allowed to attend. Reagan was a twin, but her twin, Rowan, was sick and couldn’t leave the house. Reagan was often used as medical spare parts for Rowan. Reagan would be exposed to the students at the school when her mother needed assistance.

Reagan and the school kids didn’t get along because they all looked down upon her because she could not “afford” to go to school there. One day she was helping her mother and met him. The one that didn’t make fun of her. That defended her when the other school kids were being jerks. Reagan and Cillian slowly became friends. Then they became more than friends. They were in love. One night they fell asleep together and were caught by Reagan’s mom. This was the beginning of the end.

They were told they had to stop seeing each other by their families. Reagan agreed but had no intention of sticking to it. Cillian was mistreated by his grandfather for months because he would not agree to stop seeing Reagan. After they reunited, Cillian’s grandfather threatened Reagan. Cillian agreed to return home to Ireland. Instead he grabbed Reagan and eloped!!!

Bad things happened. Time passed. Cillian has returned to NYC to complete a favor for his grandfather. Cillian sees a child that has his eyes. Then he spots a familiar face at a distance. She is living under a new name, hiding. Cillian kidnaps Reagan, who is now living as Rowan.

More things happen. Anti-climatic ending. New cousin discovered. Cillian gets to live an open life loving Reagan. The end. Good tension between Reagan and Cillian.

Brannington a name that everyone feared but not her. Well not at first. Reagan was innocent till she met Cillian. A boy/man that would change her life in an assortment of ways. Some bad, some good. That’s the tale the author tells in this story. An author that I might add is one of my favorites. This book is another book added to the list that I couldn’t and didn’t put down.
Reagan knew she needed to stay away but her mom always put her in situations that the rich kids of the boarding school she was headmaster of would find her. Make fun of her, torment her, till 1 boy stood up for her. Not once but twice. Which made it easier on her. However, that boy would change her life. She fell for him and they spent the school year in every nook and cranny on campus where they couldn’t be seen or heard. What she didn’t know was that she was forbidden fruit, unacceptable and Cillian’s world, which was going to cost her dearly.
Cillian couldn’t stay away despite his grandfather’s threats which put a bounty on her head. One in which his grandfather succeeded at the task. Gutting him bringing him back in line as a shell of himself. That is until 1 day in NY his ghosts came knocking. She was alive and well with a daughter in tow. So what he do, he brings them to the 1 place that is the most dangerous for them but where he can keep the closest eye on them. Right under his grandfather’s nose he was determined to stand his ground this time. But would he?
Would his resentment of Reagan be alive allow him too?
Would the hurt and anger they felt towards one another be what guides them through life?
Cillian’s family killed hers. She ran off not letting him know she was alive with their child in tow.
Is forgiveness even possible?
So many questions and a lot of things to navigate in the process to get those answers.
What I will say is once again this author hits it out of the ballpark with her novels.
Just be mindful though, there are some very dark themes and undertones. If you can get past that, I’d advise you to take a comfy seat because you won’t be getting up till you're done. Happy Reading!

Absolutely love this author and this series is amazing. This is book 2 in the Brannington Empire Collection and focuses on Reagan and Cillian.
Reagan is a twin and lives with her mother and twin sister. Reagan always feels guilty that she was born healthy and Rowan was born with all types of issues and can’t live a normal life. She tries to do everything and anything to help her mom care for her sister. She’s gone thru multiple bone marrow transplants to help her sister but none have really done anything.
They currently live on campus where her mother is the headmistress at Summit Crest Preparatory. Reagan however doesn’t go to the private school. She isn’t the same kind of person that would attend that school. Others are vile, arrogant pigs who think they can bully others and do whatever they want because they have money.

Cillian meets Reagan and instantly likes her. They start as friends and soon become more but, they keep everything a secret from the other students who happen to be Cillian’s friends and also keep it a secret from Reagan’s family. These two really fall for eachother but when they get caught, Cillian’s grandfather will not allow his grandson to be with someone like Reagan. He thinks he’s doing the right thing when He convinces Reagan to run away with him. Grandfather has a lot of connections and men all Over the place. He thinks he’s going to take care of Reagan so his grandson will comply with his wishes but Noone knows Reagan has a twin sister.
When something bad happens to Reagan’s family and she finds out, she takes her sisters name and does the only thing she can think of and that’s to run!
Many years go by and Reagan raises her baby as a single mom but, Cillian finds her and knows immediately by looking at Ciara, she is related to him. He follows her and then does some digging to find out what he needs to know. What happens when Cillian comes face to face with a ghost from his past that he has never forgotten? Such a great emotional read with some suspense. Definitely a 5 star read!

Does young love last? Can it stand the test of time, or is the test of your controlling grandfather, the one who has raised you since your parents' death, that causes the strain?

Ronan Brannington is the head of the Irish mafia. He has brought his grandsons up through control, intimidation, and violence. His word is law, and if you don't heed his warnings, you'll pay the price. That's exactly how Cillian and Reagan found themselves in, and that price was high.

Jump ahead a few years, and Reagan is eventually seeing all her hard work pay off; she has a good job and a nice place to live. Her heartache is still there from the loss she feels, but she has someone who helps her focus and look ahead for their sake.

Cillian has drowned his sorrow in booze and pills, anything that makes him not feel. He despises his grandfather, but he will play his game up to a point. When, by chance, he bumps into someone, his whole world tilts on its axis. He can't believe what he sees, but he has to find out.

When Reagan meets Cillian again, it doesn't go well; he is unable to believe what she has done. She doesn't get a say in her life anymore; he owns it, and he'll make her pay for what she denied him.

This story has Cillian and Reagan pulled apart by a grandfather who can't accept anyone else in Cillian's life. Love is seen as a weakness to him, not a strength. He wants to control all aspects of Cillian's life. But even though Cillian is furious with Reagan, their love, the soul connection they once shared, never went away, just buried under pain and grief. Reagan is conflicted because of what happened to her, how can she still love someone whose family did what they did? But their connection in shared pain, grief, and ultimately their love brings down their walls to let them eventually have the life they dreamed about.

Merciless Betrayal is the second book in The Brannington Empire series by Anise Storm. This is a romantic suspense with second chances, dark tones, forced proximity, chemistry, sparks, sizzle, mafia, action, drama, danger, emotion, love, loss, betrayal, secrets, tension, angst, heartache, revenge, forbidden romance, and trauma - with plenty of raw and gritty developments.
This instalment is the continuation of the Brannington Empire saga that we started in Book #1, only this time it is Reagan Coughlin and Cillian Brannington’s turn – and we take a deep dive into the consequences of betrayal, family legacies, and the intense, often destructive force of love, loss, and revenge.
With a complicated past, our MCs lives are turned on end – as they take different paths, both endure plenty of heartache, trauma, and pain along the way. Now seven years later Cillian has transformed from the boy Reagan once knew into a dangerous and vengeful man, which created a palpable tension throughout the book. Reagan’s struggle to contend with the secrets/past deceptions, as well as his relentless pursuit makes for a story that is as heart-wrenching as it is compelling. The manipulation by Cillian’s grandfather fuels a lot of the dark undertones and adds layers of complexity, injecting themes of power, control, and survival.
The book’s darker tones may not be for everyone, so if you have any issues then you should check the TWs before diving in – but fans of contemporary and dark romance will find it an engrossing read.
Bring on the next instalment - ‘Merciless Wager’ (Book #3)!
Happy reading!

Another win for this author. Always brings tension, chemistry, strain, drama, star-crossed lovers...and this one involves Cillian and the love of his life, Reagan.

Reagan is a twin, and she and her sister Rowan live with their mother - the headmistress of a very prestigious school her kids can't actually go to. Rowan has always been medically fragile and Reagan has always felt guilty and done whatever she could to help her mother and sister. This includes painful medical procedures intended to help heal some of Rowan's ailments. Neither leaves the house much and Reagan is only produced for the prep school kids when it benefits her mom. This is where she meets Cillian.

Cillian is the first one who doesn't make fun of her and treat her as less than him, despite their massive differences in lifestyles. In fact, he even defends her to the rest of the kids picking on her, and they begin spending time together. From here, they fall for one another and sneak around, knowing neither Reagan's mother nor Cillian's grandfather would approve...and then one day, they fall asleep together and are discovered by Reagan's mom!

As predicted, their families are livid and in the end, separate them. But 10 years later, Cillian is recalled from Ireland to return to the city to conduct business, and happens upon a child he feels drawn to...and then she sees Reagan, and understands what has happened. Reagan is now living as Rowan to protect herself and their child, but now that she has been discovered...will their chemistry still stand? Will they figure out how to be together and make a family?

Merciless Betrayal (Brannington Empire Collection #2) by Anise Storm

This isn’t the first book I’ve read by the author, and I’m really happy to be reading something else by the author. The writing is amazing and you can’t really beat reading a comfort author. Reagan and Cillian are the best. Merciless Betrayal is the second book in the Brannington Empire Collection Series. It is a standalone and can be read alone.

Reagan is in her junior year in high school and meets Cillian when he comes in for his room assignment. Then fast forward to their last year and she ends up pregnant. Only he doesn’t know and has been out of their life for the last six years. She has worked her butt off to get where she is now and it’s hard being a single mom. She tells her friend this when talking about getting with someone: “First, you’re biased, but I love you for it. I haven’t been called beautiful since... since, I don’t know how long. Second, I have no idea how to even set up a profile.”.

Cillian loved Reagan from the moment he set eyes on her. He knew it might not be approved, but that isn’t his problem. Or so he doesn’t think. Then they are caught in the act pretty much and there are ultimatums for that. They’re told not to see each other again and then when they do things get worse. They were married and then she was taken from him so soon afterwards. Only it wasn’t her it was her twin sister and her mom. This is what he tells her before they even get together: “I would never call you any of those things. I had only paused because I realized that I don’t know your name. Mine’s Cillian Brannington, but you already know that.”

This is the second book in The Brannington Empire series. I love books but this author. They always grip me from the start. As this book follows on from book 1 I do recommend reading them in order.
This story is Reagan and Cillian' story.
This is a mafia romance filled with danger, vengeance, secrets, sizzling chemistry, love, loss and so much more.

Reagan and Cillian fell in love when Cillian went to the school Reagan's mum was headmistress of. Even though they were from different backgrounds they couldn't deny their chemistry.
However Reagan didn't know just how dangerous Cillian' family was until she finds her mother and her twin sister dead from a mafia hit.
Cillian was warned by his grandfather what would happen if he continued to see her but their love was stronger than the warning.

After this event which changed both their lives they went their separate ways. Cillian back to his family estate in Ireland and Reagan went her own way changing her name and carrying a secret.

Fast forward and years later then meet again, however Cillian can't get over the betrayal that he feels, and Reagan wants to do whatever she can to protect their child.
Can their love reignite again? Can they finally be together like they always dreamed or will the need for revenge and the things that happened in their past continue to be a wedge between them ever getting close.

This was a really gripping story and one I couldn't put down. My emotions were on a rollercoaster as I followed them both through the confusion, emotions, sadness and utter despair. I was captivated with this couples story
