"Never waste your wish on a Dandelion when there are much more flowers out there." My dad used to tell me that all the time. Told me I needed to cast a wish at another flower if I wanted a chance for it to be granted. Now as my life takes an unexpected turn, I find myself living and working on a ranch for retired racehorses, falling for my College Roomate/Best Friend's brother, and Wishing On A Daisy.

I know this is a debut for the author, but at times, it really read like a draft plan or template as opposed to a novel. It also very much needed a proof read or editor.
I know this book was only 100 or so pages, so expecting anything remotely in depth was very unlikely. I think it could have been decent if it was a fully fledged out 300-page book, it would have allowed more time for the MCs to grow towards one another instead of randomly jumping into bed together.
Teddy, the MMC, was really cute at the beginning. He's usually cold and aloof but spent all his time trying to get rid of all of Ariel's triggers. Whether it was replacing the hinges on a loud door or throwing out all the alcohol in the house because the smell stressed Ariel out - it was very sweet. Ariel, the FMC, is pregnant and on the run from her abusive partner and ends up staying at her friends ranch, who happens to be Teddy's sister.
Yes, the romance felt insta lust-ish, I didn't expect anything else from a short story. I also had no clue this was a dead wife trope, it threw me off entirely. Just a note, the wife was murdered, Teddy's brother was framed for it, it ended up being the wife's brother who killed her. Teddy never got over it and has been a stone cold man since then.
The problem I had was with the third act breakup. After literally having sex, sleeping in the same bed, having the rest of the family know that they're together, spending every minute together... when Ariel says,'I love you' for the first time... this was Teddy's response:
“I love you.” She says, and time seems to freeze.
“What the fuck Ariel?” I jump up and start pacing. She pales, but I’m too busy panicking to worry about her. “You can’t be serious.” I shake my head and stare at her. “You can not be stupid enough to confuse kindness and sex with love. In case you don’t remember, I have a wife. She will always be my one and only love. I will never love you. You’re nothing to me but my sister’s best friend who I was helping. You’re having another man’s baby for crying out loud. How could you ever think I could love you? No, don’t answer that. I don’t have time for this.” I turn around and run out of her room.
If I was capable of dnf'ing, I'd stop here. Ariel packs up her stuff and leaves. Teddy sends her a measly text to apologise and asks her to come back home. Three months go by, and Ariel is working in a cafe a few towns away, and her ex finds her, beats her, and she loses her baby. Teddy finds out she's in hospital because his sister is still her emergency contact and goes to her.
During the 3 months, he does not attempt to look for her(?) but he does go to therapy!!! And miraculously, he is fixed and ready to jump back all in with Ariel.
His grovel consists of somehow getting Chipotle to open a branch on his ranch (????), writing her love letters every day and bringing someone she knew from her previous life to help her with her grief. Maybe I'm just too unforgiving but he literally said he'd never love me and he's basically pity fucking me and I'm also carrying another man's kid that he'd never be okay with. So why would I take him back? 😂😂😂

This review will not be harsh intentionally but I will be honest. This could be re-worked into something passable but as it is now, it’s almost unreadable. There are times the wrong words are used, the one that sticks out is, “I should feel piece”. Everything in this book is told instead of shown so it just reads like a teenager’s journal entries instead of an actual story. The MMC says horrendous things to the FMC. It happens. Some authors can make you (and the FMC) forgive them. This author had the man build a Chipotle. On a ranch. Not only that, but the FMC is in a terrible position and instead of focusing on her and supporting her, this man makes it about himself and spills his guts at one of the worst times imaginable. Most of the groveling is done in letters, where we only hear about what he’s done or how he feels. Story-wise, there is A LOT going on. Too much. There’s a dead wife, a framed brother of the MMC, the FMC’s father was also framed, the FMC suffered terrible abuse in every way imaginable, etc. I could go on, but I’ll spare everyone.
I need to start this off by saying that for a debut novel/novella, this was pretty good. The unfortunate issue that I had was that this felt like a very rough first draft rather than the final product. Wishing On A Daisy was in sore need of an editor for both the grammar issues and typos, but also for some of the content.
I liked the characters for sure. Ariel and Teddy were pretty well done as far as romantic mains go. But I felt like some of the reactions just didn't fit with how the characters were being built up. Ariel was fleeing an extremely abusive relationship. She was pregnant and battered. It didn't make sense that she was already comfortable being around Teddy, especially with his dour attitude. But whatever, we can look past that for the point of the plot. The biggest problem came with Teddy. He goes from hating the idea of Ariel being on the ranch to immediately changing his tune and wanting to take care of her. But then the end of Part 1 happened (no spoilers)
Regardless, I can see potential in the author. By no means am I writing Whitney Miller off as a bust because frankly, I think that even this story wasn't bad. I just really hated Teddy.

Wishing On A Daisy is the debut novel from Whitney Miller.
This was a story filled with a lot of pain and healing. Ariel goes through a lot of healing through the course of this book. She is dealing with leaving a past abusive relationship and is looking forward to her future. She is slowly healing from everything she has been through when a wrench is thrown into her path. This causes a lot more pain in her life, but through time and friendship from those close to her, she is able to move forward with her life and embrace the goodness around her.
Teddy bothered me at times. While I get his reasons for some of his actions, he needed to think through things before he overreacted. A lot of problems could've been avoided if he would've just thought before he spoke. However, he does grovel and do big gestures very well.
Be prepared to have tissues ready just in case. There are some very sad moments throughout this book. You will really feel all the pain and emotions which Ariel goes through. This was written with a lot of emotion and done very well.
A little confused by the negative reviews. While this wasn't the best book I have ever read, it certainly isn't the worst. She self published this book and it's her first. Kudos to you, Whitney Miller! My note to the author is be sure you have a friend or family member proofread your book before publishing. People tend to get caught up on things like 'proof' vs 'prove' (in your acknowledgments). Another example is for the preview of the next book it says 'fake darting' instead of 'fake dating'. Don't let these little things get in the way of your story!
That said, I do recommend checking the TW. There is a lot of emotion packed in this little book! I will be purchasing book 2 to see where the story goes and hopefully see some character development. The prologue I just read didn't give me much hope for Teddy though. LOL! Can't wait to see where the story goes and what a shocker about Star. Can't wait to see who it actually was!!!!
There is heart break , grief , happiness, trial , and just about every emotion there is to feel in this book. A girl who deserves a life then the one that was given to her. There so many obstacles she has to hurdle over but they say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. She finally one day wakes up and realizes she can no longer live this life and wants a new path of life. This doesn’t mean all of her problems go away but she builds a new strength and version of herself along the way. Her is about to changes in so many more ways than she expects ! Read to watch her find her inner badass !
TikTok really let me down. This book needed serious editing and beta readers prior to release. So many things are so ridiculously outlandish, it pulls the reader out of the story. This random cowboy builds an entire library for a random lady in his family ranch without anyone seeing anything? He calls the CEO of Chipotle to build one on the ranch because it’s her favorite restaurant? The CEO of Chipotle looks at the family ranch and says, yeah, let’s build one here because they have lots of kids taking riding lessons daily? I don’t know. It was very Wattpad.

This book is only a short story, but damn it packed a punch it covered loss, tragedy, and abuse and loads more. I felt sad, happy, emotional, and angry and not to mention bloody proud of the FMC in this book. I love Teddy, and where do I find my own he literally was a broken man himself and what he did for ariel omg I so want him. I can't wait for the 2nd book to come out already.
Hey Siri, play Begin Again (Taylor’s Version). Oh my goodness, the story of Ariel and Teddy healed wounds in me that I didn’t know needed to be reopened and stung to be healed. Seeing Ariel get her happily ever after post abu$I’ve relationship left me with so much hope. I cried nearly ever chapter, please read the TW! Even if you normally don’t, take care of your mental health first 🩷
I literally have no words. I’ve been so excited for this read from the day the Arc Readers needed was posted! For it to be a short story it was amazing to me, the details, the storyline, the chemistry, everything was CHEFS KISS👏🏼💕 I absolutely cannot wait for book 2!!
This was such a difficult book for me to get through. It was very poorly written and there was so many grammatical errors. The story line with Teddy and Ariel had potential, but it ended up being cringeworthy and it hardly made any sense to me. Only gave it 2 stars because I finished the book. This could have easily been a 1-star read, but I couldn’t bring myself to not finish the story.
