অতিরিক্ত জ্বীনের ব্যাপার হয়ে গেল, এ যেন একদম জ্বীনের হাট। বাড়িতে বাড়িতে জ্বীন। সাথে কিছু সুপার হিরো মার্কা ফাইট, খুনখারাবি, লাস্টে আবার এক ছটাক প্রেম প্রেম ভাব। শুরুর দিকের মুহিবের গ্রামে ফেরার আগে পর্যন্ত কাহিনিটা ভালোই ছিল, সাথে বইয়ের সুন্দর প্রচ্ছদ, ইন্টারেস্টিং নাম আর ভিতরের চমৎকার কিছু ইলাস্ট্রেশন এর জন্য উৎরে গেল।

বাস্তব ও অতিপ্রাকৃতকে এক সূতোয় বাঁধার জন্য পৃথিবীর নানা প্রান্তে জনপ্রিয় হরর সাহিত্য। সেই সাহিত্যেই নতুন বই হিসেবে যুক্ত হলো 'এখানে ভূত তাড়ানো হয়'। লেখক নাবিহা নুপুরের তৃতীয় উপন্যাসটি আগের দুই বইয়ের তুলনায় বেশ গুছানো ও পরিণত। প্রধান প্লটের সঙ্গে আরও অনেকগুলো সাবপ্লট এনে গল্পের একই ধারার বাইরে গিয়ে পাঠককে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ঘটনায় ডুবিয়েছেন। সেই সব বিচ্ছিন্ন ঘটনাগুলোকে রাক্কী শাফির মাধ্যমে বেশ দক্ষতার সঙ্গে জুড়ে সুন্দর সমাপ্তি দিয়েছেন।

গল্পের প্লট যদি সামান্য বলি, তাহলে বলা যায়— মুহিব নামে এক যুবক তার মৃত স্ত্রীকে দেখতে পায়। সর্বদা যেভাবে ওর সঙ্গে হেসে-খেলে কথা বলত, সেভাবেই ব্যবহার করে, কিন্তু সে যে এই জগতে নেই— তা মুহিবকে বেশ ভয় পাইয়ে দেয়। সাহায্যের জন্য সে রাশিয়ান ও বাংলাদেশের বংশোদ্ভূত শাফির কাছে আসে। মুহিবের সমস্যা সমাধানে পুবনগর গ্রামে গিয়ে সে আরও অনেক খণ্ড খণ্ড অতিপ্রাকৃত সত্তা ও ঘটনার সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে পড়ে। সাধারণ এক ঘটনা থেকে শুরু হয়ে সেটি আস্তে আস্তে মোড় নেয় বিস্তর ইতিহাস ও রহস্যের দিকে।

গ্রাম্য পটভূমিতে লেখা এই বইটির প্রতিটি চরিত্র বেশ সময় পেয়েছে। সঙ্গে গ্রাম্য রাজনীতিতে আক্রান্ত মানুষের জীবনকেও কিছুটা তুলে ধরেছেন লেখক। বইয়ের বেশ কয়েকটি অংশ দারুণ লেগেছে— শফুর মতো ছোট্ট বিস্ময় বালকের শক্তি, একটা খারাপ সত্তার সঙ্গে তার লড়াই, ডায়েরির অংশসহ আরও অনেক কিছু বেশ উপভোগ্য ছিল। সুন্দর সমাপ্তির সঙ্গে নতুন এক সূচনার ইঙ্গিত দিয়েছেন লেখক। আশা করি, শিগগিরই সেই আগ্রহও মেটাবেন নতুন বই লিখে। যারা হরর জনরা পছন্দ করেন, সঙ্গে গ্রাম্য পটভূমিও চান, তাদের জন্য এটি দারুণ কিছু হতে পারে।

ক্রাউন সাইজের বইটি এসেছে সতীর্থ প্রকাশনী থেকে। ভালো বাঁধাই, সম্পাদনা ও প্রুফরিডিং-এ স্বচ্ছ ছিল পুরো বইটি। লেখকের জন্য শুভকামনা রইল।

We think we pick books, but actually the books pick us.
তাই তো সেই ফেব্রুয়ারী মাসে কেনা বই নভেম্বরের শীতে পড়ছি।
বহুদিন বল বাংলা সাহিত্যের একটা নতুন হরর বই পড়ে ভালো লাগলো। গল্পের প্রধান চরিত্র বলা যায় দুজন, শফু এবং শাফী। আমি আশা করি লেখিকা দুজনকেই আগলে রাখবেন। গল্পটায় যখন একের পর এক চরিত্র আসছে, ঘটনা ঘটছে আমি ভেবেছিলাম লেখিকা তালগোল পাকিয়ে ফেলবেন। কিন্ত সেরকম হয়নি, শেষটায় কিছুটা তাড়াহুড়ো থাকলেও তৃপ্তিই পেয়েছি পড়ে। পড়ার সময় মোটেও মনে হয়নি কোনো নতুন লেখকের বই এটা। আরও ভালো বইয়ের অপেক্ষায় রইলাম।

💭𝐌𝐲𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: This might sound controversial, but I’ll say it anyway—black magic practices are still deeply rooted in many parts of South Asia, especially among rural communities and the less formally educated. In Bangladesh, they remain a distressing part of socio-cultural reality—used for petty vengeance, manipulation, or personal gain. That uncomfortable truth is what gives ‘এখানে ভূত তাড়ানো হয়’ its resonance. Nabiha Nupur doesn’t just write horror—she holds a mirror to a society where the supernatural and the everyday remain disturbingly intertwined.

From the outset, Nupur immerses us into a textured rural world, setting a chilling tone—not as a mere genre imitation, but as a uniquely Bangladeshi supernatural thriller. The protagonist, Dr. Shafi Mahmud, embodies duality: reason and belief, science and mysticism. His journey into Pubnagar, a village steeped in secrets, unfolds with eerie fluidity. From Mohib’s unsettling claim to Shofu’s mysterious powers, to the quiet desperation of characters like Emtiaz, Nupur layers folklore, horror, and emotional depth with precision.

Nupur crafts a vivid journey by blending local superstitions and folk tales with Islamic mythology, particularly the pre-Islamic Jinns like Ifrit and Marid, whose grudges trace back to Yemen's deserts. This feels authentic, deeply rooted in Bangladesh's cultural fabric. Her cultural competence shines through, especially in her exploration of Islamic views on the supernatural. Her portrayal of Jinn, Ruqaiyyah (spiritual healing), and black magic practices reveals thorough research, blending ancient wisdom with modern storytelling. Furthermore, the book’s beautiful illustrations are a significant highlight, elevating the reading experience—a visual enhancement often seen in Indian Bengali books but rarely in Bangladeshi Bengali publications. At the heart of this maelstrom stands a mysterious child whose existence seems to mock the laws of nature (yet is not impossible as per Islamic history), whose gifts may unlock the cosmic battle between ancient entities and human ambition. Each revelation pulls Shafi deeper into a web of supernatural terror and human evil—where black magic fuels ambition and spiritual decay mirrors societal rot.

Yet, despite these strengths, the narrative begins to show cracks as the story unfolds. The ambitious ideas didn’t always align with precise execution. For example, Shafi’s house in Dhaka, described as a wild, jungle-like environment, felt implausible within the city’s urban setting. There were also subtle linguistic missteps that, while minor, were noticeable. The narrative style is engaging but sometimes too explanatory, leaving little room for reader inference. This tendency transforms potentially mysterious moments into mechanical plot progressions, stripping scenes of their supernatural ambiguity. The jinns, surprisingly, were too forthcoming with answers and clues, making the supernatural mystery feel more like an information exchange than an exploration of the unknown. The short chapters, each acting more like a mini-story, lack the smooth flow of a continuously unfolding novel.

A significant limitation lies in the character development. Also, each character holds a fixed viewpoint and remains emotionally static throughout the narrative. Unlike real people who are complex and evolve through experience, these characters speak in unified voices that lack the messy authenticity of human nature. This extends to their unwavering honesty; in Nupur’s world, everyone speaks the truth. While this creates a sense of moral clarity, it strips them of the relatable contradictions and flaws inherent in human behavior.

Additionally, the story feels chaotic at times due to its non-linear structure and the sheer number of characters introduced, some of whom fade away without resolution. The "jinn fair"—with jinns in almost every house, and even a hint of romance by the end—pushes the story into pure supernatural territory, losing the nuanced balance between myth and reality. Several subplots remain unresolved, and the antagonist’s vague motivation makes them more of a plot device than a compelling villain. As a result, the final confrontations lack emotional weight, as if the author ran out of steam during the crucial moments.

Despite these structural issues, Nupur demonstrates genuine philosophical depth in unexpected moments. Consider this haunting reflection on page 141: "মানুষের জীবন এত ঠুনকো কেন! প্রত্যেকটা পণ্যের উৎপাদনের সঙ্গেই সেটার মেয়াদোত্তীর্ণের তারিখ লেখা হয়ে যায়। মানুষের জীবনটাও অনেকটা পণ্যের মতো। জন্মের সাথেই তার মৃত্যুর তারিখ লেখা হয়ে যায়। কিন্তু পণ্যের সাথে মানুষের পার্থক্য একটাই, পণ্যের মেয়াদোত্তীর্ণের তারিখ জানা থাকে আগে থেকে, কিন্তু মানুষের মৃত্যুর সময় আগে থেকে জানা যায় না।" (Roughly translated to: 𝑊ℎ𝑦 𝑖𝑠 ℎ𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑛 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒 𝑠𝑜 𝑓𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑙𝑒! Ultimately, while এখানে ভূত তাড়ানো হয়: ফোন করে আসবেন presents a robust concept, its execution doesn’t quite reach its full potential. The Bengali prose occasionally lacks perspicuity, making it a less comfortable read. Still, the novella’s intriguing and thought-provoking story kept me hooked—I finished it in one sitting. It was addictive, though not immersive. I appreciated the effort, respected its cultural grounding, and rooted for its ambition, but I couldn’t fully connect. The storytelling came close but didn’t grip me where it mattered: in the stakes, the fear, or the emotional truths of its characters. My personal rating hovers between 2.5 to 2.75 out of five, but I’m giving it three stars—to support the growth and popularity of this genre in Bengali literature. That alone deserves recognition. With a tighter plot, more careful execution, and less predictability, this could’ve scored much higher. That said, this is exactly the kind of story I want to see more of in Bangladeshi literature. It dares. It builds a world. It values theological authenticity. And with sharper execution, stronger antagonists, and a bit more restraint, I’m convinced Nabiha Nupur’s future works will hit harder.

কোনোপ্রকার এক্সপেকটেশন ছাড়াই শুরু করেছিলাম ছোট্ট এই বইটা। বইমেলা থেকে কেনা শেষ বই ছিল এটা। লেখিকার সাথেও পরিচিতি ছিল না। আজ শেষ করলাম বইটা এবং বলতে হবে যারপরনাই ভালো লেগেছে। হরর আমার অতি পছন্দের জনরা। ছোটবেলায় মোটামোটি ভয় লাগাতে পারলেই সেই ভূতের বইটা ভালো লাগতো। তবে বড় হওয়ার সাথে সাথে তা স্বাভাবিকভাবেই পরিবর্তন হয়েছে। এখন গল্পের প্লট, ক্যারেক্টার, হরর এলিমেন্টস- কতকিছু যাচাই বাছাই যে যুক্ত হয়েছে।

"এখানে ভুত তাড়ানো হয়" বইটিতে ভয় ধরানো এলিমেন্টস ভালোই ছিল। একজন রাক্কি, এক বিস্ময়-বালক যার সুতো আবার অনেক অতীতে বাঁধা, শক্তিশালী দুই ভিলেন- সব মিলিয়ে বেশ জমে উঠেছিল গল্পটি। জীনদের মধ্যকার লড়াই অনেকের কাছে "too much" মনে হতে পারে তবে যেহেতু এখানে জীন/জীনের সর্দারদের লড়াই দেখানো হয়েছে সেহেতু এই ছাড়টুকু দেয়াই যায় বলে মনে হয় আমার। প্রত্যন্ত গ্রামের পটভূমিতে ভয় ধরানো হরর গল্প, আমার অনেক পছন্দের। আর কয়েক পাতা বেশি হলে মন্দ হত না।

সতীর্থ প্রকাশনীর সম্পাদনা ও প্রুফরিডিং ছিল প্রশংসনীয়। সেই সাথে বইয়ের ভিতরের ইলাস্ট্রেশনগুলো চমৎকার ছিল।
