Updated Review (Again) 10/20/25: I forgot how much I absolutely love this series! I couldn't help but cheer for our girl as she gets her life back!!
Updated Review 11/10/24: Just as wonderful as the first time I read it!
Really hate how obvious it is in this second read through that Joseph is manipulating everyone and hope he's taken down…
Love our two leads and excited to FINALLY see what happens next after that cliffhanger!!
Original Review 2/19/24: "I want to live for myself and follow my heart wherever it takes me."
I NEED BOOK TWO IMMEDIATELY!!!
AND THAT CLIFFHANGER!!
UGHHHHHH!!!
*coughs*
This was SO good!! Definitely even better than I hoped it would be and very much looking forward to reading more because I need Brigitte to serve up a fresh side of "revenge" on that dum prince.
AND THE AUDACITY THIS MAN HAS!!!!
I hate him.
Totally hate him because how dare he force Brigitte to change, dump her, and then PURPOSELY manipulate people to do his dirty work to hurt her!!!
I absolutely loathe characters like that, and Lisa is no better! I definitely need to see our "villainess" and "villain" come together and totally crush them because they are TEN times better than Joseph and Lisa will EVER be!
And speaking of our leads, I love them both so much! I am totally living for Brigitte getting control back over her life and pursuing her dreams and passions! I'm so glad that her servant has always encouraged her and been there for her and that she has a love interest who seems to be equally looking forward to her pursuing her dreams.
Despite that Aurealis is super blunt and straightforward, I love him! He is a great lead and I think he and Brigitte are perfect together! They both have great chemistry in general, but I really like how they are both pushing one another (in a positive way!) to give their best and do their best. Very awesome to see!
Definitely looking forward to volume two and will be reading it ASAP!! Highly recommend it!!
If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love is a story about the heir of a powerful family and the most hated girl in their magic academy. The story was so interesting and I enjoyed it a lot. It takes place in a magic academy and each of the students have a spirit companion who they contracted with when they were young. But for Brigitte, she contracted with a no-name spirit who she has never seen.
Brigitte and Yuri, the heir to a powerful family, sort of bond because they happen to be the most hated people in the academy. Yuri is stoic, gets easily annoyed, and doesn't really care about following social norms. Brigitte and Yuri get into rivals relationship but it clearly shows that they will become friends and close companions. Of course, it's a romance, so they will fall in love so I'm excited to see how this develops. But I'm liking how this is going in the first volume where they find solace in each other and someone who they can be themselves without thinking more about it.
I need that second volume asap because?? THE CLIFFY?!!! Yen Press, when are you going to publish it omg? I can't find a pre-order option either IM NEEDY♡︎
Brigitte’s freshly dumped by her betrothed, the irritating Prince Joseph, and, along with her low-power spirit contract, this makes her the outcast of the academy. Once she meets up with the school’s villain, Yuri, however, things begin to slowly, but inexorably, change…
If you’re going to get me interested in a title, it helps if it isn’t shonen, isekai, or the thirtieth villainess title to come down the pipe of late. I get tired of these genre stories pretty fast, typically because they’re usually very, very minor tweaks on the formula at best.
Still, somebody better at this than I am suggested that these light novels were, indeed, quite good, so I figured it was time to dip a toe back in and it’s fair to say that there was enough here to warrant that leap of faith.
Oh, some of it is typical down to its very bones. When Brigitte is contracted with a spirit that’s so pitiful it has no name, you can start counting down to the eventual reveal that she’s actually been partnered with something akin to a magic nuclear missile. I was glad that this was basically spelled out partway through the story, rather than trying to pass it off as a surprise whenever it does happen.
Then there’s the whole engagement being broken off by Prince Joseph, who turns out to be an incredibly punchable piece of privilege. And Brigitte’s replacement being cute yet dumb yet evil and trying to mess with her. No points for originality, although Joseph’s tastes are beyond cringe in their misogyny.
It’s the details where this actually hits its stride and made me truly like this volume, starting with Brigitte, who’s a really great character who just made some pretty bad decisions along the way.
Her being so in love that she contorted herself to Joseph’s ideals, which made her into the picture of the shallow villainess archetype, rather than just having her start from there, is a clever touch and I wish they’d spent a little more time with her in that mode just to show the contrast.
When she gets the boot from that position and, rather than buckle under the scorn and embarrassment, decides to take stock of her life and dedicate herself to her goals, it’s a really great moment for her and she’s got a grit that’s really admirable (the way she deals with a miserable prank later is so good).
Yuri, as the primary love interest and the villain type, is not quite as compelling, although his very direct way of speaking does cause them to butt heads a lot (even as that is precisely why Brigitte admires him). It’s not exactly Moonlighting, but the friction between them giving way to something more is nicely handled.
Given the rest of the writing, I suspect there’s more depth to him than we first see and that supposition is more than earned with how well Brigitte has been handled. And he’s less of a villain than he just doesn’t have much filter and won’t bend the knee simply because he “should”.
I especially appreciate the way that Brigitte and Yuri end up on a first name basis and then slowly just get more and more accustomed to one another’s company. I wouldn’t say the chemistry is palpable, precisely, but it’s a nicely executed relationship that’s satisfying to watch.
Oh, you can absolutely see the seeds of later chapters; Joseph and his new girlfriend are absolutely pushing things into place for Brigitte to have a core group of friends after all is said and done (don’t think I didn’t notice who got imperiled at the end of the volume, manga), for example.
Sure, the art is merely okay and it isn’t original and you’ve seen this before, but rarely done with this level of competency. And the new things are pretty good additions; there’s clearly some seriously dark stuff hidden in Brigitte’s past that will undoubtedly come up later.
4 stars - this was a low-key hoot and I really loved its emphasis on being smart and being yourself and what you can achieve. I don’t often wish this, but I’d love to see this as an anime. It’s got legs.
Brigitte is contracted to a no-name spirit and is an outcast among her family, nobility, and her peers. Now, even her fiancé, the prince has turned his back on her by calling off their engagement. Finally free from the constraints of her engagement, Brigitte decides she will focus her energies into her studies with the goal of pursuing a doctorate. But the prince is more than meets the eyes, he and his new girlfriend are independently working on ruining Brigitte. The only person who might be able to help her is her new rival, Yuri.
It was a fun, quick read, and I look forward to the next volume, especially because of the cliffhanger.
The leads make a great pair. They may be rivals, but there's respect and support as well. The acquisition of powers through spirit contracts is something I've only read in Shonen manga, so I'm enjoying seeing it in this setting.
I was pretty excited to see that they decided to make a manga adaptation out of the light novels. It's a very cute series and it's great to be able to see some of the fantasy elements visually. I feel inspired to reread the novels once I catch up with the manga.
I'm in a very fragile state right now thanks to a show that I was watching, so I DON'T APPRECIATE THAT CLIFFHANGER!
*ahem*
I really enjoyed volume 1. I'm really curious to learn more about Brigitte and see what her mysterious spirit is. Because all signs point to it being a bigger thing than what everyone else thinks it is.
Joseph needs to be knocked down a peg or two, and I can't wait to see that happen. I would also like to know what made his personality change so drastically. Was he always secretly like this?
I ADORED the back and forth between Yuri and Brigitte. Loved it SO! MUCH! The back and forth, the poking at each other. I love how Yuri is--in his own way-- pushing Brigitte to do better. I'm looking forward to seeing their relationship grow, and see how these two "villains" get their HEA.
Thank you Edelweiss and YenPress for the DRC! All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
a good start to what will most likely be another variation of the same story but i’ve just completely fallen into a romance isekai hole though this one doesn’t actually seem to be an isekai
so far i think the LI, Yuri, is autistic ragebaiter coded n his spirits coming out on their own to take care of him n chat is vv cute
the ex tho? that mf is redpilled asf i don’t like him
3/3.5 stars. I read through chapter 12. It started out interesting with some intrigue and humor, but chapter 12 was a bit annoying. I do not like the antagonist element. It takes up too much story, and the girl who hates her is unhinged to an annoying amount
In Summary Despite the title and the otome game setup, this is not an isekai, and Brigette is more of an underdog than a villainess. She’s certainly easy to root for as she resolves to re-create herself after being dumped by her royal jerk of a fiancé. The interplay between her and the arrogant genius Yuri is entertaining as well. If you like Enemies to Lovers at a Magical Academy with Just Deserts, this title is worth looking at.
The Review You’ve seen the otome game trope. Aristocratic students at a magical academy. Accusations of the prince’s villainous fiancée bullying an innocent girl of lower standing. And the prince standing up for the victim by publicly breaking his engagement to the villainess. There have been numerous variations on this theme, and this one tells it from the POV of the villainess.
Only she’s not really a villainess. She’s not reincarnated either, as this isn’t an isekai (at least so far as we can tell). Rather Brigette Meidell is simply an aristocratic inhabitant of a world where magic is commonplace. A person’s magic capacity depends on the ranking of the spirit he/she contracts with, and unfortunately, hers is a no-name spirit. That means that even though she loves spirits and has studied all there is to know about the subject, she can barely wield any magic. Thus her proud and powerful noble family has rejected her. Aside from her devoted servant Sienna, her one hope for friendship and affection was her fiancé, Prince Joseph. To please him, she made herself into his ideal type (i.e., dumb and gaudy). That only further alienated her from everyone except Joseph – that is, until he publicly dumps her for Lisa, the girl accusing Brigette of bullying.
Thus, this title looks like it’ll partly be an underdog story. Brigette isn’t actually interested in getting her fiancé back. Though stung by humiliation, she quickly realizes she’s better off without him and resolves to rededicate herself to her childhood dream of becoming a magic academic. That doesn’t mean Prince Joseph and Lisa are through with her. Brigette’s resilience displeases them, thus inciting them to undermine her efforts. Though their terrible personalities are somewhat one-dimensional, they do their job as antagonists.
The other direction this manga is headed is “enemies to lovers.” The title infers that Yuri Aurealis is the “villain,” but he is more unpopular than villainous. The top student of the Academy of Magic, he’s contracted to not one, but two first-class spirits. He is also blunt, doesn’t care what his classmates think of him, and has the social sensitivities of a rock. For him, the world is very black and white, so when he pronounces Brigette dumb because of her school record, he is genuinely intrigued to discover she has the wherewithal to keep up with him intellectually. Brigette and Yuri’s bickering is entertaining, and Yuri makes just enough of the correct remarks and actions for romance to progress yet maintain a cool exterior. He is a fine partner for Brigette as she struggles to redeem her academic reputation, and the story hints that there’s something about her “no-name spirit” that’ll drastically change her fortunes.
The quality of the artwork is excellent from spirits to magical effects to human characters to backgrounds. The world-building and magical system are easy to follow. Extras include the first two pages printed in color, bonus text story, and afterword.
This is not what I was expecting when I picked this first book up. Guess I should have taken time to look up the synopsis. I was expecting two evil doers snapping at each other in an enemies to lovers type trope, based on the title. Had to adjust my expectations to match reality.
The reality is, these two are not villains. If anything the manipulative prince and his crazy 'girlfriend' sidekick are the villains and Brigette is their annoyingly competent would-be victim who just so happens to be developing some sort of friendship with Yuri. Yuri is no victim either, he's a highly accomplished magic user with 2 high class mystical beings contracted to him. Sure he has to be on the spectrum somewhere with how direct he is in communicating with people (read accidentally rude).
But both of them actually seem to be semi-nice people, underneath Brigette's bad reputation and Yuri's frosty exterior that is. Yuri is a bit snotty in a superior type of way, but once he realizes there's something more to Brigette thanks to their bet he seems to soften up ever so slightly. Should be fun to see where that goes in future volumes.
Really, it seems like the prince got tired of manipulating Brigette, who thought she was in love so she changed almost everything about herself to please this powerful 'boyfriend' of hers. (How would you say no to a prince anyway?) So when he dumped her he seems to have expected her to go to pieces and do anything to get back with him, only to discover she still has some sort of a backbone (and self respect) and now that she isn't leashed to one of the most powerful people in the country, she's free to rediscover herself and her independence. This obviously would piss a mutilative, gaslighting, power drunk, teenage child of a boy-prince off. How dare she shake off their relationship and get on with her life with minimal pleading and crying! lol Idiot.
I do sorta feel a little bad for Lisa. He's obviously toying with her via her affection towards him. People have done crazy things to get with royalty. Just look at what Anne did to her sister in order to marry the king...and then ultimately fail and get beheaded...Anyhow...
What do you want to bet that later on Brigette realizes she was mostly with him in order to try and please her father/increase her standing, not because she was absolutely in love with him? People have lied to themselves over bigger things. Just a thought.
Conclusion
Had to adjust my expectations because this wasn't at all what I expected it to be based on the title. Guess I should read descriptions better considering the title is one big lie. lol
That said, I am definitely going to keep an eye out for the next volume. I am quite curious how this all goes down.
Misleading title: the main character, Brigitte, is not a villainess, she's just publicly dumped by her jerk fiance-prince for false rumors of bullying his new girlfriend (I think I've read 4 manga series-starters in the past year that started this exact way--some good, some bad--and somehow almost all of the 'villainesses' also have red of pink hair). Likewise, the 'villain' isn't so much a bad-guy as a blunt-to-the-point-of-rudeness prodigy. If anything, the ex and his new gf are the villains, starting a covert bullying campaign of their own against Brigitte when she doesn't hit rock bottom to their satisfaction. The entire cast attend the Academy of Magic, where everyone has a contracted spirit familiar granting them magic, but Brigitte (despite coming from a powerful family) disgracefully contracted with a 'no-name' spirit as a child instead of a first-class spirit, and hasn't met or spoken with her familiar since that disgraceful day long ago, so she's dealing with that too. So far it's a pretty standard story, but not bad as a comfort-read or a first foray into this now-common manga trope. I wouldn't mind picking up vol.2 to see if it stays standard or does something to stand out.
Pros: we get glimpses into the toxicity of her now-broken relationship, so it's a good example of red flags for young readers who might, from inexperience, be vulnerable to the 'change for your man' trap
Cons: this opening scene has been done SO MANY TIMES now, omg -_- Please find a different plot-trigger! It's like all these mangaka were given the same writing-prompt at a workshop or retreat... Though at least it's not also "I'm in a video game", so maybe I should be grateful we escaped that also-overabundant trope
Very cute and enjoyable read. I can completely relate to Brigitte. Not only do we share red hair, but she has a very relatable character arch. A lot of people have been in situations as they've grown from kids to teenagers to adults, where they have altered their personality, wants, and interests to suit the person they want to be with. And when that person you love dumps you? You have an identity crisis. Maybe it's just because the format is a manga, but I thought this situation was portrayed in a realistic, yet humorous and encouraging manor.
While we only got brief glances of them, I liked Fenrir and Undine. Looking forward to seeing more of them. I also liked the interactions between Yuri and Brigitte. Granted, Yuri can be brash, but he really does talk to everyone like that. Also, even though he uses the same tone, you can tell the different underlying intent when he's speaking to Brigette (so cute) versus when he's speaking to Prince Joseph.
The only thing I'd like further development on would be Prince Joseph and Lisa's motivations. I'm not clear if Lisa is just obsessed with Prince Joseph or if she has some hidden agenda against Brigette. It makes the motivations behind her actions just a little murky. Same thing for Prince Joseph. As if publicly humiliating Brigette wasn't enough, he's using others to further humiliate her in hopes of getting her kicked out of school. Why? He is literally a prince. Mentally, he should consider her beneath him and move on. He certainly has plenty of other people willing to be his groupies and wait on him hand and foot. Despite that though, I do find him to be devious and manipulative.
This volume started the same way almost every villainess isekai I've read started - dude calls off engagement because FMC has "bullied" a girl that he plans on getting into a relationship with. That being said I don't mind, because it seems like a good way to start most of their stories and gives an understanding of why there are issues moving forward. I think my main issue with this story is the title feels almost click-baity. I know it's only the first volume so I'm sure there is more to be fleshed out, but she doesn't see to be the villainess type at all. Even in other villainess isekais they FMC aren't usually bad, but they are the villain in the story and I don't get that vibe from her at all. The other character on the cover, Yuri, definitely comes off like a villain in the story (but we all know the fiancé at the beginning is probably going to be the true villain here). I'm not seeing any hints as far that this is going to be an isekai, but we are getting hints that things aren't as they appear with our female main character. I did really like the first volume, and I'll continue reading it even though I complained a little about the title and how it feels a bit like false advertisement. Overall, I think it seems like the story will be cute, and I can't wait to see how the 2 main characters fall in love.
If the Villainess and the Villain Met and Fell in Love is a story about a powerful heir and a “weak” girl that is hated by everyone. I really liked volume one! I'm very intrigued to see where this story will go. The magic system is really interesting, so I'm excited to learn more about it.
Brigitte is an interesting main character. I'm really curious about her spirit - it seems like it is going to be more powerful than what anyone expects. I feel like what makes her a great main character is her drive. She did some silly things and left herself behind because she was in love and now she is back to trying to better herself and do what she wants to do.
I already love Yuri, he's very nonchalant and calm. I do like when he gets a hint of his darker aura. Yuri and Brigitte already have a really cute and fun relationship. I love their competition and the little hints we are getting of Yuri caring for Brigette.
Joseph is super annoying and I can't figure out what his issue is. I assume he just likes control but he definitely gives me the ick.
The story is similar to others from this same genre, but I still really enjoyed it! It was cute and and did a great job of introducing the main cast of characters and the magic system.
Another cute one. And as often with manga, the title is not really accurate ...
Brigitte (our FMC) is a "weak" witch as she was only able to make a contract with the weakest type of spirits. So she is the shame of the family and looked down by the entire nobility. She is nonetheless betrothed to the crown prince (of course!). Yuri (our MMC) is obviously a really strong wizard as he has contract with not one by two spirits. He is also feared, non-conformist ant unaffected by rumors and other social gossip.
For some reason, Brigitte challenges Yuri to a competition in academic excellence. A lot of the events, reasons, etc.. don't make a lot of sense, but you end up rooting for Brigitte as the underdog and determined strong FMC, as well as for an attachment between those two leads.
There is magic, and rivalry, and love triangles and a lot of silliness which fits high school settings, so all-in-all it's cute and entertaining
Imagine if you landed in a school for magical children and discovered you had no magic? That’s the plight of the heroine, or should I say Villainess, of this series. Despite her shortcomings in the realm of summoning spirits, Brigitte’s the most hated person in their academy and I can’t help but feel like we’d be friends! When the most hated girl meets the most hated boy and they develop a budding friendship, what could possibly go wrong? I devoured this book and can’t wait to dig into the next volume. The flow of the story was engaging with each panel filled with enough suspense to keep me flipping pages. Definitely an awesome story!
Brigitte is stunned when Prince Joseph breaks up with her and ends up in an academic competition with 'villain' Yuri.
This story surprised me a bit. A lot of this type of manga is really bland and cookie cutter but there's a sparkle here. Of course neither Brigitte nor Yuri are really villains (that would be Joseph) but they have that reputation at school. Yuri begins by thinking Brigitte is stupid (because she didn't study because 0h-so-annoying Joseph told her not to) but is quickly surprised when she does well on tests. I'll continue on in the series.
Totally loved this volume! I had my eyes on this manga for quite some time and decided to start reading it, it didn’t disappoint! Prince Joseph ends her engagement to Brigitte, so she’s left as an outcast, even when she didn’t do anything wrong. She meets Yuri, a cold guy who doesn’t bow down to anyone, they start a competition to see who will get better place in the written exams. Yuri respects Brigitte a lot and doesn’t have any judgment towards her, I want to continue reading the other volumes!
I love the two main characters, and I absolutely love the maid! I really would love to know who the "nameless spirit" is, because I'm sure they're actually really powerful. And, honestly, the connection forming between the "villainess" and the "villain" is one worth rooting for. I love how he seems to enjoy seeing her reclaim her life. Meanwhile, she seems to be understanding his intentions more-or-less correctly, so she's just using him to fuel her own inner fire. It's just so refreshing!
I don’t know if I would categorize Brigitte and Yuri as an actual “villainess” and “villain.” Brigitte is considered an outcast by everyone at her school and Yuri is considered cold but still very admired by the student body. Neither of the two have done anything that would make me think of a stereotypical villain and villainess.
HOWEVER, this was still an insanely cute story and I neeed to know who or what Brigitte’s contracted spirit is!
This has been really cute so far. I like the art style a lot, especially regarding the spirits. I don't really see either character as a villain or villainess right now but I can see the potential for them becoming that way as they go against the prince (who is a major jerk). Definitely excited to see where this story goes in Vol 2!!
5/24 3.5 Stars. Despite being the umpteenth story to start with the MC getting dumped by her prince fiancee for a lying simpleton (I swear, 3 out of 4 of these begin that way), this is just interesting enough story and characters with some intriguing elements that I'll try another volume or two.
