I loved this Highland romance. It is packed with romance and adventure. I loved Tess and Revan. It is one of the few romances where heroine is rich and hero is poor and I thought Revan's pride and insecurities were interesting to read!

Sweet story. This was your typical evil villain chances the hr and h. The lovers have to hid through the whole book.

Though a very common story, the as author pulls it off. I loved the couple. The villians were greAt as well. In the mix is great Scottish history.

The author does this genre well. I highly recommend!

"It was no longer lovemaking, but Revan using her to sate his lusts until he set her aside." loc.2647

Author: Hannah Howell
First published: 1992
Length: 4707 locations
Setting: Scotland, 1455.
Sex: frequent, reasonably erotic. Sex with not intention of marriage. Threat of rape by BadGuys.
Heroine: Tess is just 18 - her birthday just past is a significant motivator for her uncle trying to kill her. She is an heiress, he is a poor younger son.

A lot of history is threaded through this standalone Howell Medieval. Tess and Revan are being chased across the countryside because they have information on an impending rebellion. As such, we meet or discuss many Makers of History, from King James II to the Douglas Clan, as we head to the Battle of Arkinholm. It makes for a more colourful, rooted story against the romance of Revan and Tess.

And then we have the angsty story of Revan and Tess. Pride and Honour in full engagement, neither is willing to accept an HEA. *argh!* If they just had The Talk...

A nice book. Nothing particularly special but a good read.

The Black Dinner
In 1440, when King James II was just 10 years old, the 6th Earl of Douglas and his brother were invited to dine. After dinner and a mock trial, they were beheaded.

What happens when you put someone working for a ruler who is fearful of betrayal in the midst of the greedy group who is looking to betray him? Apparently, you end up with a kidnapping and romance.
Enemies to lovers in the Highlands of Scotland on the run for their lives from the enemies of the king while trying to reach the king to let him know that his fears were correct.

Somehow, and I've not figured out how, Hannah Howell has once again managed to make the impossible seem plausible. I mean, if you were hiding out in a cave, trying to hide from those who searched for you, just snagging whatever was in your packs that just happened to be in the stable with your horse when you make your escape, surely you wouldn't have to worry about food? It would already be there, wouldn't it? And then take an extra mouth with you? You would surely not run out of it, no matter how long you stayed holed up.

I do mock one point of this story, but it just seems like that is something that is consistent throughout any of her books--whoever has some sort of bag, it seems to hold everything you need at the moment, and not weigh very much. I guess we can't have the characters starving to death while they are on the run, can we?

It is an enjoyable read, if not always believable throughout when you stop to think about it as it settles in your mind, but somehow, in the middle of the story, of reading about it, those details don't always matter.

I'm all for an exciting on-the-road swashbuckling romance in an unusual setting, but the story seriously lost me when the hero and heroine were about about to get down and dirty in a cave on page 58. Keep in mind this is 15th century Scotland and we've been reassured over and over again that the heroine is a virtuous girl. Couldn't they wait another 50-100 pages? I do not find sex0rrring in a cave to be overly hot. It came across as ridiculous rather than sexy, and it just lost me. DNF.

Another Howell romance that starts in the dungeons. This time we really have an interesting mix of characters. A most loyal, but secretive Scottish knight and a half-Spanish, half-Scot heroine. I really did like the characters, but Revan was starting to annoy me with his lofty opinions of marriage (they were not normal for the time). All in all, it was a fun read.

Great book. A twisting, exciting plot, wonderful and witty dialogue, and great relationships all the way around, friend, family, and of course the romance between the hero and heroine.

By and1515Tessa was thinking she should have left them man where she found him but no she'd saved him and now he had the nerve to use her as a hostage.
It was dark and they needed to find somewhere to hold up for awhile and sort out theit sad situation.
Tessa was having a hard time trying to believe the words that came out of his mouth but the longer she thought about them the more she almost believe them.
Her birthday had come and gone and no one even acknowledged she was now eighteen or the fact she should have received her inheritance.
Revan needed to make her understand the dire situation they were in because it was quite clear to him that her Uncle want to kill them.
There only hope was to seek out her father's family and expose her Uncle and his friends for the villains they were and make sure they paid a hefty price.
Tessa had to admit he was a brawny looking man whom set her a blaze with his touch and truly left her breathless.
But soon it seems nothing is going as planned they are chased here and there all over yonder as her Uncle is desperate to stop them.
From hiding with his family to there dash to hers they'll have continue to stay ahead of those who hoped to stop them.
However soon Tessa finds herself being dragged back to her traitorous Uncle's by the man she proclaimed in league with plotting with a dangerous family to raise up against their King.
But nothing will stop Revan from chasing after them to rescue Tessa from the very devil himself.

Highland Hearts was fast-paced with lots of action. Revan and Tessa are constantly running from some sort of danger or trying to get their various bits of information to the king. Even once they’ve passed their information on, they quickly uncover more information, making their flight to the king even more urgent.
These two have sex far too soon for my liking. I get that they’ve been alone in a cave together for days on end and there is this immediate connection between them. However, it is the 15th century and Tessa is an obviously virtuous young woman. There is no way they would have done anything like this so quickly in real life.
It was interesting to see how the characters dealt with Tessa having money while Revan had none.

Another wonderful book by Hannah Howell. Tessa finds Revan chained in the dungeon. As she lets him go her Uncle Fergus comes into the dungeon and Revan holds a knife to Tessa's throat to escape and kidnaps her. As they race across Scotland to get to safety so much is revealed. Tessa realizes her uncle has been trying to kill her and with the help of Revan she has proof her is conspiring with the Douglasses to murder the King and his heirs!! They gave to stay safe and get thus information to the King!! You have conspiracies, lies, kidnapping, threats and so much more all wrapped up in a great read!!

Another wonderful Hannah Howell novel.

Stalwart hero and heroin, no matter what is thrown at them they pour steel into their spine and push through. Revan and Tess , are the kind of lead characters that I adore. They are not inclined the petty arguments or the dreaded whining often found in historical novels. You have two people marked for death evading their foes and making fools of them. I want strong women and even stronger heroes in my reading. MS. Howell never fails to provide me with all I want in an outstanding novel. She is an author that you crave all she has put pen to paper.

Enjoyable if this is your type of story

If you like the books where the main characters spend a lot of time running from bad guys on a horse and camping in a bedroll while hiding you will like this book.
I know lots of people like the supposed authentic feel of using language to sound like it’s a period piece or region. I personally don’t. It’s awkward to read. This book has that.
This has a lot of adventure action in it.

the plot draaaaaaaged on and somehow the romance went too quickly, the first time they hook up had very little tension/build up, then the ending was wrapped up all nice and tidy even though they never actually got to the king… and Revan’s “pride” issues made me cringe. he could have been a good lead character, but all the pouting about being poorer than his wife just ruined him for me.

Steamy and adventurous romance

I really enjoyed this Highland romance. It is packed with romance and adventure. It is a bit steamy and has some intense scenes but it is well written with great characters.

Okrem týchto dvoch mi výraznejšie udrel do očí Revanov brat.

Bolo síce pochopiteľné, a pre ten najšťastnejší koniec asi najlepšou variantou, no stále mi prišlo až priveľmi jednoduché a nepremyslené.
