2.5 stars rounded off to 3.

Jamie wakes up to find a dead body in the car boot. Who? What? How? When? Why? - that's what the book is about. Largely the why.

First the positives - Short chapters, each chapter a first person account of the night in question through different points of view and a strong narrative make for a great Part One. Up to this halfway mark, the book is a really engaging read.

Now the negatives - Too many characters and a plot that spirals out of control unnecessarily in Part Two make for a tricky close. It is hard to keep track of these narratives and hard to follow the drama (which is frankly a bit unrealistic). I wish Part Two was handled better.

I am however happy to have discovered this author and thankful to BookSirens for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book, although I would consider it more of a YA thriller than a psychological thriller written for adult audiences. If you are a fan of the YA genre, then I think you’ll really like this.

The story contains several twists, making it a fast paced, easy read and the short chapter length is always a plus. I did think there were too many characters and little character development, making it difficult at times to keep track of who is who and how their relationships intertwine.

The author does a nice job with the end of the story wrapping everything up so there are not a lot of unanswered questions at the end. Recommended with reservations.

The short chapters made me want to keep reading, along with all the twists and turns. Each time I thought I had figured it out something else would happen!
The one thing I will say I did struggle with was the amount of characters, I had to go back in the book a few times as I had got confused who was who but this could be a me problem!
Overall I would recommend for a crazy ride. Gobsmacked!

*Spoilers* This book was INSANE! (In the best way!) I do think there were a lot of characters and time frames to keep up with; and although the characters were definitely into adulthood, sometimes they seemed more immature/younger… nevertheless, I could not stop reading this book! It’s my favorite of 2025 thus far. By page 10, I literally said, “that escalated quickly!” The writing was good. I highlighted several quotes. There were some funny and relatable moments too with movie/tv show and song choices between the characters. Speaking of tv show… if you’re into YOU - this definitely has some Joe vibes… Just when you think you have it figured out - plot twist! (Honestly, I would watch this story as a movie.) But amazingly, all the questions had answers by the end of the epilogue. My only “ick” is Kayla being turned on from her actions. Also, Travis being married had me flabbergasted. Soooo glad Halle “showed back up” at the end. (The discussion about Halle from part one had me feeling crazy lol.) Also, Joanne. Dang girl. Finding out such a big secret from DNA - never could’ve seen that coming, but having Evan (Noah) and Angela end up together made me happy. 5 stars. I’ll be reading more from Jessica for sure.

Jessica’s enigmatic style of writing draws you in, hooks you then throws you on the wildest thrill ride of your life in Secrets After Sunset. Honestly, I don’t even know where to start with this one. Trying to formulate the words to do this book justice in a review that doesn't leave spoilers yet intrigues you as a reader of the reviews to WANT to read it has proven a challenge.

I can say I haven’t read anything in the last 6 months, maybe ever at this point, that took me on a ride as wildly enticing as this. From the very start, the hook is cast, and you are slowly reeling in the story then BOOM, it’s like deep sea fishing trying to reel it all in and get hold of what in the world is going on!!!! Now, that metaphor is not meant in a negative light by saying there is a lot going on, I love to fish and let me tell ya, this was the best catch I have had in a long, long time!!!

Let me give you a couple examples just from the first page of the prologue, Prologue y’all!!! Again, no spoilers here, just something that will introduce you to and leave you drooling to find out exactly what Jessica has in store for you:

“It’s under the cover of darkness that the most nefarious plans take place. The midnight schemes of liars, cheaters, and killers.”

“Suspicion turns to resentment. Small betrayals metastasize into something darker, something deadlier.”

Now, if these two quotes from page one of the prologue don’t increase your curiosity, are you really a lover of psychological thrillers?? I swear I felt my toes tingle reading those lines knowing there was something deep, dark and sinister coming up!!!

Start Part One.

Your FMC, Jamie, is introduced in the first chapter waking up after what has apparently been the party of her lifetime with little to no memories of what has happened. So, a gruesome discovery, tests of friendship, determining loyalty, learning of betrayal…………is it all real, who is really your ally and who is really a foe? Can you trust those you are closest to or is the old saying of keep your friends close but your enemy’s closer hold true here??

After you meet Jamie, a whole cast of supporting characters are introduced. Now how Jessica was able to interweave the number of characters into a story this length, have their interactions work out perfectly baffles me. You have Evan, Sam, Al, Craig, Whitney, Davin, Halle, Kayla, Angela, Seth…………………see what I mean, that is a lot of baggage to unpack and keep straight in one story this size and Jessica manages to do this flawlessly.

Then we have our MMC, Evan, I know I listed him and Kayla as supporting characters, but they evolve later in the story. So here I can give you a spoiler because one of the first important facts you find out when you get into the meat of the story is, he’s dead. How, when, why – that’s for you to read and find out.

Start Part Two.

Holy what the heck did I just start. Revelations to Part One just came to light throwing the whole first part you read into an upheaval questioning everything you thought you figured out. I mean every little thing from part one is questioned. In Part Two your FMC changes while all your supporting characters from Part One are also here but with twists and turns so crazy it leaves you with whiplash if you aren’t careful. Don’t worry, Jamie is still here as well she’s just a little held up at the moment.

Your MMC makes another appearance in the story revealing more information about his death that will clear about 20 million things up in the story – ok slight exaggeration on 20 million things but boy, there is a lot that has gone on that will be cleared up with his death story.
Enter Epilogue.

Jessica truly wraps this story up in a neat little package – weighing about 50 lbs. with everything that has transpired from start to finish LOL. This story pointedly makes you realize that as humans we are all flawed and unfortunately, mental health is important.

Trigger Warnings: Death, Mental Health Challenges (although they aren’t brought to light as that in the story but it is clear that there is a mental challenge going on with quite a few characters with their behaviors).

Thank you, Jessica Lynn Sorensen, for entrusting me with a free copy of Secrets After Sunset to review. All opinions in this review are my own and I am leaving this review voluntarily with no promise of any compensation from the author, current or future.

This is the kind of book that makes you want to (or in my case actually) skip work so you can keep reading it!
Jessica twisted such an intricate web, full of twists and turns. Every time you think you have something figured out, she throws another shocking twist at you. It was a fun, quick and incredibly twisty read, that I will be recommending often!

HOW FAR WILL REVENGE TAKE YOU? This book left me open mouthed.  Get your pen and paper ready to take some notes with this book. There are multiple POVs, multiple times lines and characters but they are all interwoven to create a edge of your seat read. It was a neat way to write and seeing each characters thought process was a interesting and cool way to bring the story together. There is betrayal, murder, lies, secrets and a twist that you won't see coming! I am so glad I signed up for this ARC, thank you for the chance to review this!

Secrets After Sunset
by Jessica Lynn Sorensen

Some books hook you from the first page, and this one does exactly that—with a gut-punch of a premise that doesn’t let up. Imagine waking up after a party with a raging headache, no memory of the night before… and a dead body in the trunk of your car. That’s exactly where Jamie Smith finds herself, and from that moment on, her life spirals into paranoia, fear, and a desperate search for the truth.

This psychological thriller is the kind that keeps your heart racing and your mind spinning. Jamie is an unreliable narrator in the best way possible—her confusion is palpable, her fear seeps off the pages, and as she retraces her steps, the tension only tightens. The story flips seamlessly between the present day and flashbacks to the night of the party, peeling back layers of secrets, betrayals, and dark truths Jamie never saw coming.

One of the strongest elements of Secrets After Sunset is how Sorensen masterfully plays with perception. Just when you think you have a handle on what’s happening, another twist slaps you in the face. The pacing is relentless, with short, punchy chapters that make it impossible to put down. Each revelation had me second-guessing everything and everyone—was Jamie guilty? Was she being framed? Who could she trust?

Jamie’s paranoia is infectious, and the writing makes you feel every ounce of her anxiety. Sorensen has crafted a tangled web of manipulation and deceit, and just when you think you see a thread leading to the truth, it unravels into something even more sinister. The supporting characters are just as intriguing, each one a potential suspect, adding to the ever-present sense of unease.

If you love psychological thrillers that mess with your head and keep you flipping pages well past midnight, Secrets After Sunset is an absolute must-read. It’s gripping, twisty, and completely unputdownable—a perfect blend of mystery, suspense, and psychological tension. Jessica Lynn Sorensen has delivered a thriller that lingers long after the final page, leaving you questioning just how well you really know the people around you.

Secrets After Sunset is a thriller mainly told from our FMC Jamie. After a heavy night of drinking at a party, she wakes up to find a dead body in the trunk of her car. She goes through the stages of panic I think everyone would feel if they found themselves in this situation. It’s an interesting premise for a story, but this book is split into two parts. Part one starts off strong and was enjoyable for me, but I found myself losing focus during part two. So many side characters are introduced, and we get their pov as well. Honestly there were a ton of twists which some come off as interesting and unforeseen, but others feel unnecessary and convoluted. I really wanted to enjoy this read more, but felt myself pushing through to be able to finish it. I wish I could give it more, but this was a solid 3/5 for me.

I enjoyed the book. There are a LOT of unexpected twists and turns. Just when you think the story is going to go one way, the story takes a whole other twist! One thing that was a bit difficult was to follow the plot at times. Though this was the case, after awhile I was able to quickly figure out where the story was headed.

I love a who done it murder mystery, but my god did this book had so many twists and turns I did not see coming!
Thought I knew who done it, but the more I read the more the culprit kept changing. And I love that. 🫶🏻

I loved this book, was a good lil palette cleanser for me. 💁🏻‍♀️

So when I first started the book, I had trouble reading it bc one it had my daughters name and 2 it reminded me of high schoolers and these are supposed to be 29ish. But during the last 1/3 of the book it quickly changed and got my interest that i couldn’t put it down. I’m glad i stuck it out. It’s more than 3 stars but not quite 4

Secrets After Sunset kicks off with an intense mystery: Jamie wakes up on the grass after a wild night, with no memory of what happened, only to discover a dead body in her car’s trunk. To make things even more complicated, the body belongs to the girlfriend of her ex-boyfriend. From there, the plot spirals into a gripping, unpredictable thriller that will keep you turning pages.

One of the things I really appreciate about this author is her knack for keeping the reader on their toes. Just when you think you’ve figured things out, a surprise twist appears, making the story even more exciting. The suspense is constant, and it’s a real page-turner from start to finish.

However, the book wasn’t perfect. The biggest issue I had was the sheer number of characters introduced throughout the story. While I understand the need for complex storylines, it made the first half of the book feel quite different from the second. The abundance of characters can be a bit overwhelming at times, making it difficult to keep track of who’s who.

Additionally, I would classify this more as a young adult thriller rather than a psychological thriller, so if you’re expecting something deep and cerebral, you might be a little disappointed. That being said, it’s still an incredibly exciting read.

Overall, despite a few small issues, Secrets After Sunset is a thrilling and addictive read that will have you hooked until the very last page. Highly recommend it for anyone who loves a fast-paced mystery!

Fair warning, if you’re looking to pick this book up, there is A LOT going on here…

According to the blurb, the story centres around Jamie and the events of an evening she cannot remember. Initially it seemed that was true, however, she’s maybe 50% of the story overall. Just when you think you have a grasp on what’s happening, a heap of new characters arrive and the story shifts - and not necessarily in a good way.

There are two parts to the story and the second, featuring a completely new set of characters, could be from another narrative entirely. The two tales come together in the end but in a very hodge-podge kind of way.

For me, it took a while to get into this one and whilst there are some interesting moments, I wouldn’t classify this as a psychological thriller. I mainly completed reading it as I wanted to see how all these different people came together in the end (and I’m still not sure I know that for all of them). There are a lot of characters to keep track of, plus the timeline jumps from past to present and then distant past with alacrity.

There’s a good story in here and I feel that this just needs a bit of a simplification to make it shine.

I love psychological thrillers so when I saw this available on BookSirens I immediately applied for it. I unfortunately didn’t wind up liking the book.

I liked the various points of view. I liked being able to see into the mind of many of the characters. I also enjoyed seeing Kayla being revenge driven but ultimately didn’t like her as a character. I really enjoyed the many plot twist and turns this story had. The last 20% of the book was where I was most interested in the book due to many of the plot twist and secrets being revealed.

I personally didn’t like any of the characters due to most of them acting way younger than their age. Most of them had too much jealousy of others and acted like teenagers. There’s one more thing I really disliked about the book but can’t say without spoiling one of the plot twist.

Thank you so much to BookSirens for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I read an advance copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.
The premise of the story was good and told predominantly from main character Jamie's perspective. She wakes up after a night of partying and heavy drinking to discover a body in the boot of her car. The body is that of her ex-boyfriend's girlfriend!
Unfortunately, the story then declined for me with too much going on - twists stalking, lies, secrets, and the twist, which most other readers didn't foresee was somewhat obvious to me. The story is summed up in this paragraph " Sometimes, the secrets born after sunset can lead to misguided vengeance. At least, that's how it was in my case - the victim seeking revenge turned out to be the true villain. The thing about a villain is that someone is always on their radar, someone to bring down, to destroy." 3 and a half stars.

Secrets After Sunset is a must-read for 2025. WOW!! It was an amazing read. I planned on reading a few chapters at a time so I wouldn't zoom through it, but that didn't happen. 🤣

The book starts off with Jamie finding a body in her trunk after a crazy party at a friend's house. The chapters go from the present day, then to the day of the party, and finally to hours after finding the body.

Secrets After Sunset also focuses on Jamie's group of friends and all their secrets.who can she trust? You will get the perspective of all of Jamie's friends and other people involved in this fantastic thriller, and who did it mystery.

Every chapter I read, I thought I figured out who put the body in the trunk. Who did this or that, and I couldn't have been more wrong. You will be shocked by the twists, deceit, and plots for revenge in this book.

When I downloaded the ARC copy of this book I was super intrigued by the how this story would unfold. I mean what happens if you find a body in your trunk but have no recollection of what happened the night before? I have to admit it took me 2 days to get reeled in. I thought about abandoning the book a few times. I struggled initially because I thought there were too many characters to keep track of and I had to keep going back to clarify who was in the part I was reading. However, it all came together and I couldn’t put the book down. I actually enjoyed the timeline shifts and the twists. Wasn’t as predictable as I initially thought and I actually have read it twice now and I actually cannot wait to see what happens. This author has a unique way of pulling you in and I’m glad I pushed through because once I did, I was not disappointed

I have no words for how amazingly written this book was. From cover to cover this book had me with all the feels. When I tell you this book will have you in a chokehold. I didn’t want to finish it because I didn’t want it to end but I knew I had to finish it. This is my first book by her and she has definitely became a fave. The characters were well written, the plot was on point, the storytelling was fantastic. There was never a dull moment in this story. Talk about a book of shock and twist. My jaw and kindle hit the floor multiple times while reading this. Jessica Lynn Sorensen will be a writer to look out for this year.

What did I just read??????!!!!!!!

I was lucky enough to arc read this, and whewwwww, what a ride!!!

Author Jessica Lynn Sorensen grabs your attention from the first page. I didn't want to put this down, wanting to know what was happening and coming next. The build-up of tension, the characters, and the unraveling of events was spot on.

And the twists!!!!! If you enjoy jaw-dropping twists, short chapters, and interwoven characters, then I highly recommend this book! Every time I pieced together a what and who and who was where and when, another twist would reveal itself!

I loved this book and am excited to read more from Jessica Lynn Sorensen!!!!!

Stunning! I was gobsmacked, flabbergasted, and all the rest. After reading this I had a long think to ponder and process what I just read- and it's a lot!!!! While I was pondering, I went to an online bookstore and purchased 2 of the books this author recommended. I was that impressed and intrigued with this first book of hers that I read. It is suspenseful and edge of your seat gripping all the way through to see what comes next. Was this about revenge or a psychotic break- you decide. Kids can be cruel, but adults can rain pure evil down! Unputdownable! I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion

From the first page, this book pulls you into Jamie’s nightmare and it does not let go. Waking up with no memory and a dead body in the trunk? Instant hook. As the story flips between the aftermath and the chaotic night of the party, every chapter peels back another shocking layer. Just when I thought I had it figured out, the story twisted again.

Jamie is a raw, flawed, and relatable character. Her paranoia feels real, and her desperation to uncover the truth had me on edge the entire time. The pacing is tight, the suspense is relentless, and the final reveal? Absolutely WILD.

If you love psychological thrillers that keep you second-guessing everything, this one’s a must-read.

Received as a review copy from Booksirens, this is an honest review. Secrets After Sunset is a gorgeously vibrant of a thrill ride as long after their high school lives have been left in the past; their actions as teenagers have come to haunt them as a crafty stalker hell bent making them pay in any way their imagination cook up... even if murder is the way to go. As the story unfolds, getting more complex the deeper things go; the secrets that get un-buried showcase a far more poignant layer of suffering than what's first perceived.

Highly recommended.

Ok, let's start with I thought it start out slow. The only downfall about it. And as I kept reading, my curiosity spiked more and more. I felt so close to some of the characters, like I could really relate. And then there are the insane twists. And not just any old average twist. This girl will blow your mind if you like getting your mind blown!! I really do like this book. I'm interested in reading more from this author now. That was a wild ride. There are so many characters you get to know and see from their point of view. It flip flops a lot between time periods but it is pretty easy to follow. Overall it was a great book. So many twists! I flew through the chapters needing to know what happens next. It was easy to read. The last twist at the end had me floored. I didn’t see it coming. This is my first book from this author and I will definitely be looking for more of her books to add to my TBR list. I found this book enjoyable, though I’d consider it more of a YA thriller than a psychological thriller aimed at an adult audience. If you're into YA fiction, this will likely be a hit for you. The story is fast-paced, filled with twists, and the short chapters help maintain a quick rhythm. That said, I felt there were a few too many characters, with not enough development to make them easy to follow. It was sometimes hard to keep track of who was who and how they fit into the overall plot. On the plus side, the author does a great job of wrapping everything up by the end, leaving little in the way of unanswered questions. Overall, it was a solid read, but I wouldn’t say it blew me away.

Firstly Thanks to Booksirens and Publishers for an advanced copy of this book!

I honestly didn't know where this book was going, there was so many twists and it really keeps you on your toes, there was a few bits that I predicted but the story as a whole was so well done, I enjoyed the multiple POVs and change in past and present really helps to get the whole picture. It was a unique story.

I'd definitely recommend this, it comes out Febuary 2025.
