Book Review: Dancing with Our Selves: A Practical Guide to Harness the Ego and Live on Purpose by Brittany Hopkins Switlick
Rating: 4.2/5

Overview & Core Themes
Brittany Hopkins Switlick’s Dancing with Our Selves is a thoughtful fusion of modern psychology and yogic philosophy, offering readers a structured yet compassionate approach to self-awareness and emotional mastery. The book targets individuals grappling with reactive behaviors, unconscious patterns, and the dissonance between their ego and higher self. Its strength lies in its accessibility—bridging therapeutic frameworks like The Drama Triangle with ancient wisdom to create actionable steps for personal transformation.

Strengths & Emotional Resonance
Switlick’s writing is both empathetic and pragmatic, avoiding the overly abstract tone common in spiritual self-help literature. The integration of yogic principles (e.g., balancing effort and ease) with journaling prompts and meditation exercises provides a tangible toolkit for readers. Chapters on identifying emotional triggers and repatterning default behaviors are particularly impactful, eliciting moments of introspection and even discomfort—a sign of the book’s effectiveness in challenging ingrained habits.

The author’s background as a yoga instructor and facilitator (Red Lotus Yoga School) shines through in her emphasis on somatic awareness and mindfulness. Personal anecdotes, though sparing, add relatability without veering into self-indulgence. Readers invested in emotional intelligence or holistic wellness will likely find the book’s blend of theory and practice refreshing.

Constructive Criticism
While the book excels in practicality, some sections risk oversimplifying complex psychological concepts. For instance, the dichotomy between ego and higher self could benefit from deeper exploration—especially for readers unfamiliar with yogic terminology. Additionally, the reliance on established frameworks (The Empowerment Dynamic®) may feel derivative to those well-versed in personal development literature.

The pacing occasionally falters, with repetitive exhortations to live intentionally without always expanding on how beyond generalized advice. A more nuanced discussion of cultural or situational barriers to self-actualization (e.g., socioeconomic factors) would enrich its inclusivity.

Final Verdict
Dancing with Our Selves is a valuable contribution to the self-help genre, distinguished by its integrative approach and user-friendly exercises. Though it occasionally skirts depth in favor of broad applicability, its core message—empowerment through self-awareness—is delivered with clarity and warmth. Ideal for yoga practitioners, emotionally curious professionals, or anyone seeking to break cyclical reactivity.

Who Should Read It?
Recommended for readers who enjoy:

-Blends of psychology and spirituality (The Untethered Soul meets The Power of Now).
-Structured self-reflection tools (journaling, meditation).
-Gentle yet provocative guidance on shadow work and emotional alignment.

Note for Skeptics: Those averse to yogic or New Age-adjacent language may find certain sections less resonant, but the book’s practical exercises remain universally applicable.

This is a wonderful read. The author speaks to you like a caring friend, and the tools and exercises are powerful, yet easy to incorporate into your day to day. This book has helped me dive deep, understand myself better, and have more compassion for myself. I have always been one to fight my ego, this book has given me some tools to work with it, not against it to show up as a brighter version of myself.

This book does a fantastic job of breaking down the ego and helping us understand how both partners in the dance are ultimately there for our growth. I especially appreciated how Brittany framed the ego and our authentic self as a dance—one that requires awareness and balance. She beautifully illustrates the importance of harnessing the ego rather than letting it control us. This insightful and thought-provoking read offers a fresh perspective on personal transformation. Highly recommend!

I have always been aware of the Id and Ego but never really thought about how the ego works. I like how the author shares examples of her own personal experiences and then breaks them down in order to help the reader understand the concepts she writes about. And I love the idea of naming our ego. It makes it much easier to examine how and possibly why we react in certain situations. Once we understand why we can then begin to choose our behavior versus just reacting.
This is not a one and done book. I frequently find myself thinking about the concepts and examine my own behaviors as I interact with others. I think the book is very empowering.

Dear Reader,

In the fall of 2019, my world was rocked by a remembrance of a long hidden memory. Not long after, I realized I’d spent much of my life dancing to the tune of my fragile ego self, unaware of the possibilities that awaited with higher self ready to take the lead.

That moment set me on a journey of healing and transformation, inspiring Dancing with Our Selves. This book is my offering to those longing to step out of old patterns and embrace a life of intention and purpose.

My hope is that as you turn the final page, you’ll feel equipped to harness the ego, connect with your higher self, and navigate life’s challenges with grace. When we let our higher selves lead, the dance of life transforms—it becomes lighter, freer, and full of purpose.

in love and gratitude,

Brittany

As someone who naturally leans toward helping and supporting others, this book was a profound and eye-opening read. It allowed me to embrace and make peace with the part of myself that is deeply compassionate while also recognizing the importance of stepping back and empowering others in a healthier way.

The book beautifully explains how shifting from The Drama Triangle—where we may unconsciously fall into roles like Victim, Persecutor, or Rescuer—into The Empowerment Dynamic helps us lead from our higher self. Rather than fixing or saving, we can show up as a Creator, Challenger, or Coach, offering support in a way that fosters growth rather than dependence.

What I appreciated most was how this book encouraged self-reflection without judgment. It wasn’t about labeling certain behaviors as "bad" but rather about offering new perspectives that allow for both personal and professional growth. As a therapist, I found this incredibly useful in my work and in my own life.

This book is a must-read for anyone looking to step into a more empowered, intentional way of being—whether in relationships, work, or personal development. Highly recommend!

I just finished Dancing with Our Selves by Brittany Hopkins Switlick, and I am excited to using these practices in my daily life! This book helped me deepen my understanding of why I’m so reactive in certain situations, and gave me tools to improve, without getting down on myself.

One of my favorite takeaways was how much it helps me to catch my self in a reaction, pause, and breathe. If I can, I stop and meditate, even if only five minutes. The book and the tools in it, helps me learn to reset, and be a better version of myself.

Brittany’s writing style is honest, making it easy to relate to, and practice these concepts in my daily life.

I’d recommend this book to anyone on a self-discovery journey, those wanting to break free from old patterns, and enjoy life more.

If you’re looking for a guide to help you open up, feel your emotions, both good and bad, and love yourself and others in your life better, this book is for you!

A game changer!

Dancing with Our Selves is an amazing read for anyone willing to let go of their ego driven reactions to lead a more thoughtful and empowered life.

Chapter 4 on the Drama Triangle and Empowerment Dynamic was a game changer for me. The exercises helped me identify which part of the drama triangle I reside in when I’m stressed and how to move into a more powerful version of myself.

Brittany shares her personal journey with anecdotes that are often amusing and sometimes quite vulnerable which encouraged me as a reader to lean in and do the work.

I’ve shared this book with my coaching clients who feel stuck in behavior patterns that prevent them from showing up as the best version of themselves. If that is you, I highly recommend Dancing With Our Selves!
