Two new monsters take on the Hulk.

description

War Devil is the Hunter of Man, whose spirit takes over unsuspecting soldiers in a small desert town with disastrous results. This one has Hulk teaming up with one of the Ghost Riders in a fun story arc.

description

Frozen Charlotte is a freaky angel of mercy in New Orleans who has been an underground serial killer in that city for much longer than anyone realizes. This one has Hulk teaming up with the ghost of a dead cop from decades ago.
When Charlie goes missing, Banner and Hulk both want her back. But only one of them can take on the kind of angel that only the devil loves.
The ending is a cliffhanger straight out of a horror movie.
Loved it!

description

The art does take a dip in the Frozen Charlotte arc, but fortunately, the storytelling is so good you almost don't notice. Almost. I hope Nic Klein comes back because I thought his artwork was just perfect for this series.

The horror and the chills keep coming. Surprisingly this series continues to get better and better. The Ghost Rider appearance was very well done.

This volume collects two stories, the first being an encounter with Ghost Rider, but it’s not a Ghost Rider you’ve ever seen before. The second has Hulk encountering a new, macabre menace in New Orleans known as Frozen Charlotte.

I’m really digging this horror-vibed Hulk series and the artwork’s really good, too. Long may it continue.

This entire run so far has been an ethereal old gods, monster ridden hell ride and I couldn’t be more stoked to follow banner along for the ride, with special appearance this time around from a ghost rider, I mean Hulk sure knows how to find and bring out the coolest and most bad*ss antihero’s and antagonists on his journey to help this mysterious girl. Story wise it felt like a bit fell off but where that lacked, the amazing fights between the Medusa like mother of monsters and war devil fights I mean talk about understated while also but griping and to the point. I am absolutely loving where this winding road is taking me.

After the events of the last volume, Bruce and Charlie are on the run trying to stay low. They hook up with this family for shelter only to realize they are being attacked by some creatures and they have there own personal Ghost Rider protecting a kid there. It was dope to see Hulk and this in particular Ghost Rider team up to fight this giant monster, Jinni Dagaal, The War Devil. Especially with Nick Klein killing it on pencils. The second part sees Charlie go missing due to Frozen Charlotte. She was booted out of heaven along with Lucifer. She now collects innocent souls and traps them in little dolls made of bones. Hulk is on the case and finds ole Frozey and gets to smashing. The art for these later 3 issues was by Danny Earls. While not as good as Klein, it was serviceable I guess. But the end was pretty bleak and I’m curious where they go from here.

In Volume 2 of Phillip Kennedy Johnson's The Incredible Hulk, "War Devils": Hulk and Charlie meet up with a Ghost Rider; The two go to New Orleans where a monster collects souls and puts them in porcelain dolls; Charlie is kidnapped and Hulk gets help from a ghost detective.

Dark, fun, with wonderful artwork, this series is, so far, so good...

So PKJ has firmly established the Hulk as a horror story. It works for me.

The 2 arcs in the volume are clearly a delaying tactic to put off the confrontation with the Eldest, but they're both very good, sublimely mixing humour, horror and the grotesque, especially the arc illustrated by Nic Klein, who revels in drawing hallucinatory and deformed transformations.

An okay book. For me, there is just something missing in this book. I liked the concept of the more horror orientated Hulk, especially with him fighting monsters and demons. There is just something missing, and I am not sure where the story is going.

Bruce and Charley find shelter among a group of people already under seige of monsters, but with their own protector who does not take too kindly to the Hulk. Then, a chilling story of a demonic serial killer.

Apart from the more gruesome transformations of Bruce to the Hulk, the Hulk himself seem to be more toned down in the book so far, also I don't think enough time is given to the struggle between Bruce and the Hulk. More time is given to the demon the Hulk has faced, with the character summary at the end. The book finishes with a varient cover gallery.

This volume is a two parter.

First part is Hulk having to team up with a old school Ghost Rider to stop a evil force from killing people. Ghost Rider here is SO fucking cool. It's a spirit of vengeance is the realest sense. The Bike becomes alive to protect a child, which is so cool. Also some excellent fight scenes here.

Second part is a ice spirit creature come to life. It's not as interesting as the first two but the designs are cool and some really cool body horror and fight scenes.

While I don't know if Phillip Kennedy Johnson run will go down as a classic, it's also a fun, fast paced, enjoyable ride when I read it. Sometimes that's what I want the most.

A 4 out of 5.

The good run on Incredible Hulk begun in the last Volume continues here. Charlie and Hulk are on the run and helping people overcome the monsters that are popping up everywhere.
2 Stories:
1) In a small town, devils are taking and killing people in the night. The town's only protection is an old Spirit of Vengeance, a Ghost Rider, who initially thinks Hulk is the monster, but eventually teams up with him to take down JInni Dagaal, the War Devil.
2) Nephele, a remaining Nephalim now Devil, takes Charlie and lures Hulk to battle. He does defeat her (pretty epic battle!) but at the end of the Volume, Charlie is left trapped inside a wooden figurine. Not sure how Hulk is going to solve this one!
Overall, I do like the direction this is going, but would love more of Charlie and her past to be known.
Recommend.

Hulk /Banner are fighting internally, a young woman follows Hulk around because she too wants to beat the world up. It is kind of like a weekly xfiles where they come across a monster and have to kick its ass- the morality play is done thoughtfully enough that when the hulk starts smashing it feels deserved. A great run so far.

I would love just a little more substance in this story, but what is there is really good still. The art and horror of this story work together beautifully and I’m really digging this one so far!

War Devils continues Phillip Kennedy Johnson's "monster of the week" rendition on the Hulk with increased success. Maybe the few non-battle scenes are more engaging; maybe the battle scenes themselves are more awe-inspiring. Probably both!

In the first half of this volume, Bruce/Hulk and Charlie end up in a Southwest encampment of immigrants where a mysterious creature is wreaking havoc. Lending a helping hand in the ensuing battles is a Ghost Rider from WWII. Wonderfully, this leads to some truly excellent team-up artwork spanning multiple pages. The overarching plot is less engaging since it reveals very little about this "Eldest" figure who is pulling the strings.

The back half of the volume finds Bruce/Hulk and Charlie in New Orleans (why? doesn't matter), where Charlie is captured by a malevolent entity. The artwork here is very different, but perfectly suited to the subject matter, which is essentially "Hulk as Hellboy."

Honestly, maybe this whole series is "Hulk as Hellboy"? Not the worst idea.

Fica complicado defender o PKJ assim.

The second volume of Philip Kennedy Johnson's ongoing The Incredible Hulk continues the adventures of Banner and Charlie in the American Southwest as a primordial horror known as the Eldest continues to spawn monsters from the depths of the Earth. Contained here are two arcs: "Spirits of Vengeance" which finds the pair taking refuge in a migrant community in a Texas border town which is defended by an undead Ghost Rider, and "Frozen Charlotte" where the duo are in New Orleans and run afoul a ghoulish serial killer but are aided by a ghostly Pinkerton agent.

The horror elements continue to be solid, with a lot of the eldritch horrors faced by the Hulk fitting the Southern Gothic flair introduced in the previous volume. The Banner/Hulk pairing with Charlie is sort of a revamp of the original friendship between Hulk and Rick Jones, so the novelty isn't really there, but Johnson does a good job making it clear that Hulk clearly cares for Charlie in his own way. The mythos of Ewing's Immortal Hulk is definitely a driver towards a lot of the plotting, which I'm sure a lot of readers will appreciate as well.

Nic Klein handles the art duties for the "Spirits of Vengeance" arc, and I can safely say it's his artwork that really made me enjoy that stretch. Marvel better put Klein on a Ghost Rider book because his illustrations really sold the action well. Danny Earls handles the art duties for the "Frozen Charlotte" arc and while he handles the horror elements well, a lot of the background details feel a little underdeveloped. The switch between Klein and Earls is very apparent unfortunately, but the series does a great job ensuring that individual arcs are still being handed by a single artist. I do hope Klein manages to keep to the schedule since his contributions really make this run work for me.

Maybe more accurately a 3.5 star volume. As soon as Earls replaced Klein, I felt very jarred out of the art in this volume. Klein had layouts that were generally a touch clearer but also his take on Hulk has the feel of a Mignola comic without the same flat images that were actually more similar to Earls’ artwork. The story so far feels like it’s engaged mostly in a very slow-burn, monster-of-the-week framing that didn’t really ever pick up steam for me even given how issue 11 ends. I also feel like the Banner/Hulk tension feels limiting since they can’t really meaningfully interact as realized to this point.

I'm still not convinced this run is really about anything in the way Immortal Hulk was, more a series of short horror tales which each work at a basic parable level regarding human inhumanity and the monstrous reactions provoked thereby. But oh my, they land as mood pieces, Nic Klein suggesting Corben or Bisley with an amped-up confrontation in the Texas wilds, before Danny Earls gives us New Orleans and sepulchral otherworlds as a Tim Burton set drawn by Eduardo Risso.

I'm glad I decided to read this series in trade because although the art is fun it's got very little story to keep your interest. The Charlie character is beyond boring and useless. Basically, Hulk flounders around until he runs into some other "monster", they fight, we get the vaguest idea who they are, then it's over. Ditch Charlie and we'd have something. Also: Ghost Rider '44? Yawn.

This was such a great read yet again and I just love this run, it continue the horror tone set by the Immortal hulk but its more in the nature of hellboy type of stories and I love this so much. We follow Bruce and Charlie going to some town in Mexico and from there they confront this Ghost rider from WW2 era and we see Hulk vs this guy and then we see the "War Devil" emerge and his beasts and Hulk getting taken over and how they fight this thing.. this being and the origin of this creature and I love the bestiary origin of it, and you see who this primal being is and its awesome. I like the design for the GR and wish we got more of him and also love the character development here, its really well done.

Also the next story arc which sees them arrive in New orleans, like the name of the place, its so awesome, it really delves into the history of the city and the feel is spooky and magical, and the villain there "Frozen Charlotte" is such a unique character and I love the biblical origin of the character, it really delves so well with the larger story PKJ is telling with the character and the way you see her vs Hulk and like how he is protecting Charlie now, and what may have happened to her.. it seriously awesome, and probably my favorite story in the series so far, the design is just crazy and again the bestiary gives her such an awesome backstory.

This run truly is magical and will make you love the characters and the gothic horror feel of the book and so many new villains and concepts being introduced and it makes the marvel universe so interesting and a treasure trove of stories, PKJ is really doing a special run on this title and the art is always so awesome, it really enhances the experience so well. It truly is one of the best ongoings at marvel atm.

Pretty solid. Phillip Kennedy Johnson continues a stellar run on the Hulk. What began with the immortal Hulk series by Al Ewing, Johnson adds on to the horror take on the Hulk. The visuals are just as important to the storytelling in this book. There are some fantastic widespread panels. I particular like the double page spread featuring the ghost rider. I also like how Johnson is infusing the book with classical and cultural myth. The Nephilim from the the bible and other local supernatural beings give the story a real world cultural quality. The Hulk and the supernatural just mix together well in the story. It is already challenging enough for Bruce Banner to conquer his inner demons but facing actual demons makes the stakes even higher. This was just a very entertaining read and I wish more of the marvel books being publish were of this quality. But even if the Hulk story line doesn't crossover into the larger direction of the Marvel universe I am happy to pick up the series every time I can read it. Phillip Kennedy Johnson continues to be one of the best new writers in comics. I am also currently reading his work on Green Lantern: War Journal, Vol. 1: Contagion. Fans will also enjoy his writing inThe Last God 1 & Superman: The Warworld Saga.

Still rocking the creepy horror tone in this Hulk run...

They seem to be building up quite the pantheon of monsters and demons in this series. We've had unique Ghost Riders, old soldiers with demons attached, reallllly creepy Nephilim, and all kinds of other creepy nasties. It definitely gives the book a bit of that 'Swamp Thing' creeping doom vibe. There's a growing Apocrypha(?) of Creation times in the MU. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

There WILL be a showdown between Hulk and the 'Mother of Horrors' (or their minions). Until then? Hulk just wants to be left alone (even if alone now means having a teen tag-a-long)
=======
Bonus: The only inconsistency in this series is the art. Some guest artists are just NOT comparable to others and bring the book down.

This volume had two arcs the War Devil arc and the Frozen Charlotte arc. War Devil is set in the desert of West Texas in a Hispanic small town, where a demon of ptsd stalks and hunts human. This story also introduces us to a new Ghost Rider who was a WWII soldier who know protects a little kid. This story is brilliant, creepy and is great at showing how trauma and war can affects people’s lives.

Frozen Charlotte is set in New Orleans where a demon has been killing people for centuries. The cliff hanger this volume ends on is so good I can’t wait to see how the Hulk and Charlie’s lives are changed after this encounter.

Hulk punches a Ghost Rider and an Angel as the Age Of Monsters continues.

PKJ's horror take on the Hulk keeps impressing me, hitting the same notes as Immortal Hulk but from a very different direction. The relationship between Hulk and Charlie is kind of adorable if a little screwed up, and there's definitely a growing sense of dread as something horrible simmers on the horizon.

The art's a bit more uneven though - Nic Klein's three issues and Danny Earls' three have a distinct difference between them in styles, and one's certainly more to my taste than the other.

Story is kind of strange--a couple of self-contained ones here. First, Hulk and Charlie fight off some strange desert monster with the help of a WWII Ghost Rider. Then, they find themselves in New Orleans, going up against a different kind of monster. The art is kind of messy in both stories (each one has a separate artist). Chaotic, hard to follow panels from Nic Klein and then the contrast to the art of Danny Earls is just too jarring. I hope this gets better.
