Witch Hunter #1

Witch Hunter Olivia

Rate this book
In the town of Piedmont Pointe, where paranormal is the norm, a girl can easily get herself in over her head with a single wrong move. Unfortunately for Olivia Adams, she's about to make several. Starting over is never easy, but it seemed like the only option to Olivia. The decision to turn her back on the Guild of Witch Hunters, the very group she devoted her entire life to, was one of the hardest things she ever did. It meant leaving her family, her friends, and her old identity behind forever. Coming to terms with what caused her to abandon her duties in the first place was even harder. While trying to lay low and stay off the Guild's radar, Olivia finds herself thrust back into her old ways after unknowingly interrupting an assassination hit on a powerful witch. What follows is the last thing she ever thought she'd agree to do-protect the very thing she was groomed to hunt. To complicate things even further, Olivia begins to develop feelings for a tattoo artist who also happens to be half warlock, and no matter how hard she tries to fight it, she can't resist her inescapable draw to him. Olivia's forbidden relationship isn't her only issue though, because once the mystery behind the assassination attempt starts to unravel, she's forced to choose sides when the loyalties still tied to her past life are tested again. So much for the idea of a fresh start.

T.A. Kunz is the pen name for Adam Kunz, who lives in Orlando, Florida. And unfortunately a lot of the rumors you’ve heard about his state are true. When he’s not writing, Adam spends his time reading, playing video games, watching anime and Korean dramas, and spending time with his partner while cuddling with their two dogs, Nicky and Rusty. Since childhood, he’s had a great fondness for reading and writing. His fiction genres of choice are eclectic, but mainly are in the YA, MG, and NA categories. So, it was no surprise when he decided to write his own books that he’d be a grab bag kind of author in terms of story ideas. And he just loves mashing up genres. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Adam advocates strongly for diverse representation in all media. He may or may not have a coffee addiction, the jury’s still out on that one. And his hands-down favorite holiday is Halloween, which holds a very special place in Adam’s heart.

I started this book and could not put it down until I finished it. I absolutely loved the story and the characters were amazing, especilly a certain super sexy half warlock.

Olivia,an ex-witch hunter, leaves her old life and The Guild behind to start fresh with her best friend Tara. Easy, right? When Tara decides she wants to join a college sorority, Olivia finds herself caught in the middle of a sinister plot that leaves her no choice but to open up the doors she fought to close on her old life.

Olivia also has to rely on a half warlock for help, and not just any warlock. Heath, the one guy that makes her knees weak and that she shared a mind melting kiss with. The ignitable chemistry between Heath and Olivia made for an exciting read. When an author can make the sexual tension between characters steam up my kindle, I am like putty in their hands. One quote from Heath that sticks in my mind: "Well, first of all, making out with a girl is, to most guys, like talking for hours to get to know her better. The way a girl kisses you tells a lot about her. And your kiss, Liv, intrigues me."

The hillarious banter also found throughout the book had me in a fit of giggles on numerous occasions. I especially picture one scene in particular when Heath, Olivia and Tara find themselves in a sticky situation. Tara is mocking them while waving a vile she holds in her hand. Heath has an axe, Olivia has a crossbow and obviously Tara has a small glass vile. I still crack up when I read it. It may not have the same affect if you haven't read it (so read it,LOL), but here goes. "Don't worry, guys. We're safe because I still have my holy water." Anyways, I found it hillarious.

I will be continuing this series for sure. I think that T.A. Kunz has written a clever, witty and truly enjoyable story that will leave you begging for more.

5 wicked stars!

We start off in this book with Olivia attending a sorority party with her best friend Tara. Olivia is not interested in joining this sorority but Tara is and she would do anything for her. While at the party they are attacked by another Witch Hunter going after Angelica Delacour a high priestess’ daughter. Olivia is shocked by who the person is that is attacking them.
Olivia Adams is or was a Witch Hunter she has since left the Guild. Tara is or was a witch things happened that caused Olivia to leave the Guild with the help of her mother. The rest of her family turned their back on her. Tara’s family was attacked by the Guild because of the things Olivia found out about Tara’s father, Tara was injured and Olivia took her to see a warlock who helped save her life.

Heath Blakemore is a sexy as sin warlock with baby blue eyes and tattoos all over his gorgeous body. He helped Olivia save Tara. Now Heath is going to take Olivia to meet with a guy named Jack, I love the twists and turns in this story. I love all the characters and their interactions with each other the story line here is nicely paced which I love.

What will happen between Olivia and Heath? Will Tara ever find out what Olivia did? Who is after Angelica Delacour and why? Where does the Genie fit into all of this?

If you love stories with Witch’s, Warlocks, some werewolves and even a Genie!! Yes this is a first for me; a Genie! I totally recommend this book! Great read.

I was given a copy in exchange for my honest review.

This book was not too bad but not great. For most of the book, this could have been a YA book, but there is one chapter that changes that. And that is a very hot scene!

Olivia is an ex-Witch Hunter, that ends up defending witches against her old Guild. Olivia fights her attraction to Heath for most of the book, trying to keep it as friends. But she realizes its just best to give in to that attraction. That not only solves the sexual frustration and tension but makes them a strong team when fighting against the Hunters.
There are several times I thought things that happened were very strange, but it kinda ends up fitting into the story.
There were also times I thought oh this is going to happen, I can just see it, but nope something else would happen and it would take me by surprise.
I will say that this book did not hold my interest for long, I kept thinking "OMG this is taking forever" and I will say I was happy when I finished the book. I kinda feel like there will be a second book just because of the way this was left. I mean, the loose ends were basically tied up but I still feel like there should be more. Although if there is a second book, I don't know if I will read it. I'm just not interested.

My Thoughts:

Let me start by saying that I am so glad I picked this book to read after Horns, it was the perfect book to take me down off of that 'creepy horror book vibe' and put me back down in the land where I feel so much more comfortable: paranormal. Horns was paranormal, but if you've read Horns, you'll understand what I mean. Witch Hunter Olivia came to me recommended by authors, friends, and readers so I was very excited to see what Kunz could offer in the New Adult Paranormal department. I was not disappointed.

Allow me to say a few words about New Adult Paranormal before I get into this read specifically. Right now there is a huge push for new books in the "New Adult Paranormal Romance" genre. I don't completely understand the logic in this thinking, because, in my opinion there are plenty of "New Adult" paranormal series/stories out there, they just aren't being branded as such. Also, can we just take a minute to recognize some of the other amazing New Adult Paranormal authors out there? Two off the top of my head are Nazarea Andrews and Liz Long, two of my favorite authors and proof that paranormal stories and romances can exist without the need to brand a novel as such. After reading Witch Hunter Olivia, I am placing TA Kunz on my list alongside them. I think this current line of thinking from the literary world is complete and totally BS. I am a plain, black and white kind of guy who seriously doesn't understand why we need all these titles on our reads. This will become the topic of a rant post sometime very soon, but let me just say this: I don't believe there is any need in labeling a novel as Paranormal Romance if only to appeal to the romance genre lovers. I don't like romance. I LOVE paranormal. Reason would stand that I would be "meh" on a paranormal romance. That is, if, it were a true romance. That probably didn't make much sense to anybody but me so let me just say this, Witch Hunter Olivia, in my honest opinion as a reader, was a New Adult Paranormal novel. Not a romance. I'm not sure where the "romance" part of the branding came for this novel, but I disagree fervently. This is by no fault of Kunz, but the publicists and publishers. Again, that's for another rant, but I digress.

Since I have already brought up the romance thing, I will speak about it first. Witch Hunter Olivia was a great novel, but I wouldn't label it as a romance. Sure there is a romance, but what book these days doesn't have a romance of some sort. The romance in this novel does not drive the plot in any way, shape, or form. It does make for good writing and character development, but the relationship could have been strictly platonic and still have had the same effects on the novel. This is why I don't believe the labeling of "romance" is necessary. Kunz did an amazing job with his characters and their relationships. They are realistic and relate-able in many aspects. I enjoyed the read thoroughly. Even though readers of the New Adult genre are inclined to believe that we can expect to read numerous explicit sex scenes, Kunz proved me wrong. Witch Hunter Olivia offers one, one, sex scene and get this. It appears on page 160 of a 200 page novel. That close to the end. I love that. I loved that the story had a story to be told without relying on numerous unnecessary sex scenes to keep the readers attention. On that note, I applaud Kunz!

Back to the characters, I really enjoyed them for the most part. First can say I was so excited to read that the main characters in this novel were not white. I know that is pretty strange to say, but I oftentimes picture book characters as different races and I am so glad Kunz made this distinction in the beginning. Thank you for that! I do wonder, however, why Olivia, our FMC isn't on the cover of a book titled Witch Hunter Olivia? I really hope that was not in effort to gain romance readers by placing a half naked male on the cover... Again, my biggest issues with this novel were in the branding. It was obvious to me the entire time who this novel was marketed towards and unfortunately it was not me, the MALE paranormal lover. Thankfully, though, it was not enough to prevent me from enjoying this read. Olivia was a cool character, but I will say that she left me wanting more. We are given very little backstory to the lives and world of any of these characters and that left me confused at times, almost as though we were expected to know things that were unwritten. Heath, the MMC was a great character, but I am left with the same questions. WHO is Heath? Unfortunately I think the character development on the individual level was lacking in parts here. Heath is a tattoo artist who is also a warlock, but can only perform spells in the form of tattoos? I think? It's a little difficult and unlike anything I have every heard before. Tara (Olivia's best friend) flat out got on my nerves. She plays a very important role in the story but I rolled my eyes every time she opened her mouth. She never took anything very seriously until it was too late and I hated that! Rebecca was the character that gave me the most to think about though. I'm not going to go into details and on a personal tirade here, but I hate all things Greek-life. I am sorry if we have a differing opinion on this but I am very animate about this and don't see my views changing anytime soon so I was little angered to see that so much of this novel revolves around sorority girls or frat guys and partying, but then I realized that it was all one big tongue-in-cheek joke about the Greek system. Olivia is clearly not a fan of Greek life although both Tara and Heath are. It was interesting to see how their views effected the storyline. Also, although going to class was mentioned a handful of times in the novel, you really had no idea these characters were in college because they never go! I guess that's just one of the unrealistic aspects of writing about a college setting. Nobody wants to read about boring lecture halls. Overall I thought the characters were alright, they definitely left me thinking.

In a book with Witch in the title, we see very little magic and witchcraft. Almost none. In fact, most of the magic comes from a genie. There was also a scene where we see werewolves but overall there was very little magic. I was excited to see how Olivia hunted witches (see title), however we didn't see Olivia fight a single witch. It's actually kind of confusing. Well... ugh. Spoilers people.... Read the book and then come to me for an explanation on this front.

The plot of this novel is pretty... hard to explain. A lot happens, but then again a whole lot doesn't happen. This is a short read, clocking in at 200 pages on my Nook, but most of them were not action filled. There was a lot of building to the action and then a bunch of action all at once. I like that sometimes, but in a book this sort I would have liked to see a little more action scenes. I think the story is great and definitely leaves the option for sequels and spinoffs (I have acted Kunz about this via Twitter and will embed the Tweet here if I get a response on the subject)! I will definitely be reading them if there are more to come! The novel does have a few emotional moments and ultimately ends on a happy, yet bittersweet note that definitely made me feel like the plot was resolved. I really like that in a novel.

This probably sounds like a big jumble of confusion to anyone who has stayed with me, but to anyone who is still here, congrats, you made it to the end! All-in-all I really did enjoy Witch Hunter Olivia in the end and for that I am granting it a 4-Star rating. Kunz definitely weaved an interesting story with a unique twist that I found refreshing. Usually my issues with the branding would have changed my thoughts on the rating, but in this instance, I don't believe it was anyone's fault and it really didn't distract from my reading experience. To anyone looking for a relatively easy.quick read and is a fan of all things paranormal (such as myself), check it out and be sure to let me know what you thought!

Witch Hunter Olivia is great. It’s got a great storyline, great characters, great writing, just an overall great story. I very much enjoyed reading it and am absolutely looking forward to reading more from this author. If Witch Hunter Olivia is any indication of the quality of books we will be getting from T.A. Kunz in the future, I say bring it on!

This book revolves around Olivia Adams, a talented witch hunter who has recently left the Guild of Witch Hunters based on activities within the guild with which she didn’t agree. She’s trying to start her life over as a college student with her best friend Tara, and avoid the notice of the Guild as much as possible. She has been forced to leave behind everything from her past, including family, friends (except Tara), and previous identity. It becomes evident that her old life has followed her and when her brother seems to be involved in an assassination attempt on a powerful witch, Olivia is determined to find out what is really going on. She is also spending quite a bit of time with Heath, a super hunky tattoo artist that is half warlock, and seems to be an awesome guy to know!

Witch Hunter Olivia is considered a “New Adult Urban Fantasy.” Well, I’m far from being a new adult, but I enjoyed this book just the same. There is plenty of intrigue and mystery along with the building sexual tension between Olivia and Heath. I wasn’t sure what I was more excited to read about next, who was behind the assassination attempt and why, or will Olivia and Heath ever do the dirty??

I have to admit, it took me just a little bit longer to get into Witch Hunter Olivia than it took me to get into Kunz’s other books, ONE TINY SECRET and TWO LITTLE LIES, but it still held its own in the overall “did it make me happy?” category. My only other complaint is that I would like to have known the back-story of what was going on with Tara just a bit sooner, and by “just a bit,” I mean a lot.

If you are looking for a great story to read over a few days that keeps you guessing and wanting to get to know the characters more from the moment you meet them, give Witch Hunter Olivia a chance. You won’t regret it! I know I didn’t!

In the Paranormal world, Olivia Adam is a very strong witch hunter. Ex. Witch hunter. Her life is full of adventures even after she has left that part of her life behind. She was disillusioned with her way of life after her best friends family was completely wiped out and she had to bring back her friend, Tara from the world of Death using magic. Now, her friend did not know the real reason of her existence and it was on Olivia to keep her protected.

From a witch hunter to a witch protector had cost Olivia the loss of her own family. Her family disowned her and she was now on her own to protect Tara and herself. Her strong attraction to the tattoo artist,Heath makes her life full of adventure and passion. Heath is always by her side even when she fights against her own brother.

Even when she did not want it, the responsibility to stop a war in the paranormal world rested on her shoulder. Was she capable to do so? Why was she having a war with her own brother and how will her relationship with Heath develop?
It was a very interesting read. There were moments when past incidents have been referred to about which I had no clue, but they did not stop the flow of this story. In fact, it has made me very curious to learn more about what had happened to Tara. It is a very interesting read with lots of fast action. Olivia is very action oriented, witty and target focused.

There is only one problem I found with this novel. It is a tad too long. There were moments I wanted to shout that it's enough. Moreover the when the antagonist was revealed, I felt he was a tad too insignificant for me to have an AHA moment. But, what lacked there was made up in the chemistry between Olivia and Heath, turning this into a must read.

There are aspects of the book I am torn on.Like Olivia's waffling emotions and her guilt. Overall a wonderful read. Quick and enthralling with some interesting twists.

Olivia is a ex witch hunter. Her reason for leaving is heart warming but also kind of misguided by guilt. she loses her family because of it. So this stubborn girl goes off with her friend to college and instead of being free from her past ends up embroiled in stopping a war and saving a witch of royalty. Let's not forget her brother who I would love a book on him and his boyfriend topher. Those two seem fascinating. As this is going on Olivia is trying to fight her feelings for Heath and stave off her guilt.

Heath oh wowza. this half warlock will rock your socks off. Not your ordinary tattoo artist. He's kind, gentle and sweet. Loving to a fault and in love with Olivia who keeps pushing him away. She can only push for so long though and when these two get together it is wonderful and sizzling. He is so supportive.

The story has many plots going on at once that keep your attention and you are left with questions at the end on a few things. I wonder if it is really over and Heath and Olivia can explore their feelings in peace I don't think so. I have a feeling more is in store. More danger for this ex witch hunter.

A fun fast paced story that has some romance mixed in with guilt, remorse and forgiveness as we see Olivia be brought back into the world she tried to leave. A wonderful read.

I was lucky enough to have a chance to beta this novel as it was being written—and let me just tell you, it’s a bangin’ story! Kunz is a wonderful storyteller, and the world of Piedmont Pointe, complete with witches, witch hunters, and other magical beings, is one you just can’t miss. If you like the world of the paranormal even just a bit, then this is definitely a novel you need to pick up.

Olivia Adams is a very real character—in fact, they all are, from their mannerisms to their emotions, I truly felt like I knew these characters on a deeper level. Even though they have magical capabilities, they are true to life and real; though the story revolves around magic, should it be removed, the story would still thrive on as it deals with so much more: betrayal, heartache, romance, mystery, intrigue, doing what’s right, and the list goes on. Kunz has weaved in some amazing themes, and as the story unfolds, one cannot help but fall in love with all things Olivia as she struggles to make sense of the world she left behind—a world that just won’t let go of her—as she attempts to fit into this new one.

Full of action, this novel will keep you on your toes as you read, and I already can’t wait for the next installment in this amazing series.

Witch Hunter Olivia 4 Stars

Olivia, Liv, is an ex Witch Hunter. After witnessing her best friend dying at the hands of them, she decided that being a Hunter was not for her. In doing this, she will then be shunned by everyone in the hunter community, including her whole family.

One night at a sorority rush party, Liv sees her brother, who just so happens to have a hit on witch royalty.

Turns out her brother isn't her brother, but a strange look a like. When she seeks her brother down to tell him the news, he all but turns the other way. He wants nothing to do with Olivia the traitor.

With the help of a super sexy tattoo artist, Heath, she'll find out what's going on and why a Hunter had a hit on a high priestess witch.

Paranormal romance is one of my favorite genres and WHO doesn't disappoint. I loved the world that Kunz gas created. It is unique and might I add, quite sexy. Yes, sexy indeed.

l would say it's more like a 2.5 star-rating. The overall concept of the book was enjoyable, but I would have been much more interested if the story had started prior to Olivia leaving the Guild. The book was quick, and fun but I never got to a point where I really cared about the characters. I felt no emotions for Olivia or Heath, which is really important to me. If I can empathize with what a MC is going through, I tend to be more invested in the story.
The relationship with Heath was painful for me. Again, there was no emotional connection, and even between Olivia and Heath there didn't seem to be much depth. The best relationship in the book was Olivia and Tara. I would have been much more interested in the story of what happened to Tara's family, and how her and Olivia got to be so close, that Olivia would bind their souls together.
Unfortunately, I don't think this book left me wanting more, so it is unlikely that I would continue the series.

Full Review posted Book Lovin' Mamas

T.A. Kunz throws readers into a world of fantasy, where humans are amongst the paranormal kind having fun with each other. The Guild though has their ways of making sure the paranormal don’t go all crazy, otherwise they will have to deal with the hunters. It’s an action-packed adventure that takes you on a ride and makes you realize why Olivia gave it all up. I felt for the poor girl the whole time, while she dealt with what she dealt with. There were times she drove me crazy though, especially, when she kept secrets from her best friend and kept blowing off a certain male character. How dare she blow off, Heath?!

I give this book 3.5 moons, and recommend it to readers that are looking for something different to read.

Olivia used to be a witch hunter until it caused her best friend to lose her family. She gave it and her family up to bring her best friend back from death and to instead become a witch protector. She travels to college with Tara to protect her and put her past behind her. That doesn't exactly work out when instead she gets involved in a war while still fighting off the guilt for Tara's loss.

She also meets a HOT warlock tattoo artist that is super sweet. She pushes him away for a time, but he doesn't give up as he is love with her. Once she does give in to the attraction and her feelings for him, they are steamy together.

I give Witch Hunter Olivia 4 hearts!

What an exciting read! Olivia totally rocks! She's a rebel who is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, even if it means turning her back on everything she's been trained for. She's trying to balance simple college life with the crazy paranormal world she's also a part of. And I can't even tell you how much I adore Heath! I mean he's a tattoo artist who's half warlock - how cool is that? There's action and surprise around every corner as Olivia's whole world gets turned upside down! I loved every minute of it!

First, this genre is one of my favorites, so I LOVED finding a new NA book that was right up my alley. I hope it is the first of a series about Olivia. She was a great character and the chemistry with her and Heath )(hello hotness) was a nice addition. The tension with Olivia, the Guild, and her family added a nice dynamic. I also loved that Olivia's back story slowly unfolded as the plot progressed, and I felt for her struggles to tell Tara the truth.

There is a lot of action, kick ass action in this story. Olivia is a strong character, not so innocent or naive to underestimate her abilities. She is loyal to her best friend who brings out the protector in her. I love the fight scenes. I think they are the most difficult to create for an author, but I felt like I was watching rather than reading the punches and kicks. Oops, spoilers!

This book is a fantastic read, and I am so glad I gave it a chance. Even though this is only the second book I've read by this author, T.A. Kunz amazes me with his gripping stories. I especially love the different take on witches, hunters, and various other creatures in this book; and I hope this is going to turn into a series!

Not for me

This was just awful. Retiring from being a witch hunter, cramps to sense witches are near, zombies, just too many bad ideas crammed into one space.
