Picked up the book in Singapore and had the pleasure reading part of it in Penang. Pleasant and easy read, well researched and with plenty of interesting details about the history of Penang, Georgetown and its people. Broken into 26 chapters, loosley following a historical path, making many excursions covering related topics. Nice little book to read if you are visiting Penang, perhaps after you read the Tan Twan Eng novels!

A very comprehensive journey through the history and development of Kedah and Penang. This book helps to understand the development of Malaysia by bringing together an overview of the history of early settlers, impact and reasons for colonisation, the diverse cultures and religions present in this country and some of the key players along the way. I learnt so much and have a deeper appreciation of some aspects of the culture that I hitherto took for granted. There was so much to absorb that I will definitely read this book again
