When the lights go out for good, survival is all that matters.
Sarah Mitchell thought she'd left combat behind in Afghanistan. Now an ER nurse and guardian to her young nephew, she's rebuilt a quiet life far from the disasters and split-second decisions of her military past. But when an EMP pulse fries every electronic device in the city, Sarah's peaceful world crumbles in an instant. As civilization breaks down around her, Sarah must navigate four miles of increasingly dangerous streets to reach her nephew. But she's not the only one moving through the chaos. A ruthless gang leader sees opportunity in the darkness and begins to seize control—taking what he wants, crushing anyone who resists.
Her mysterious neighbor, Jake Cooper, reveals he's been preparing for this moment for years. While others panic, he takes action, securing his home and implementing plans. But survival isn’t just about stockpiles and weapons—it's about knowing who to trust, and when to fight.
With time running out and violence spreading like wildfire, Sarah must decide if she can trust Jake and what lines she's willing to cross to protect the people she loves.

*3.5* A solid premise, total blackout, chaos in the streets, and an ex-military ER nurse forced to tap back into survival mode to protect her nephew. I was definitely excited with the setup, and Sarah is a refreshing character in a genre that’s usually dominated by male leads. I appreciated her strength and vulnerability, and Jake’s prepper calm was a nice addition.
Post apocalyptic Non-romance Single parent Former military nurse h Prepper H Unrealistic bad guys
Overall, I liked this story more than I loved it. There were quite a few plot holes and moments that didn’t quite hold up and pulled me out of the story more than once. Still, the action moves quickly, and I’m curious enough that I’ll definitely check out the next book.
Blackout Nation: Episode 1 tells the story of the initial hours following an EMP attack. Given how short the installment is, characters are defined, but still one dimensional. I hope we get to know them better in future episodes. 4/5 stars. Recommended for readers looking for something fast paced and fun
3.5 ⭐️ I really enjoy EMP survival thrillers but these are small novellas in episodes so everything happens so fast with not many pages to go by. I like the writing and pace of it so I’m gonna continue from 1 to 5. Right from the beginning it hooked me in and it’s very plot heavy and each individual novella focuses on a specific thing going on through the EMP.
I didn’t realise it was a short read when I nabbed it so be prepared for that. Characters are well done. My one consistent complaint with EMP or post apocalypse stories is that everything happens too quickly… within hours…
The person reading the book is a male reading for a female and is bland. There is almost no emotion. An EMP just hit and all the characters are sounding like it is another annoying day.
