Li'l Miss Vampire Can't Suck Right, Vol. 1

Rate this book
Luna Ishikawa is a dark and mysterious vampire―or so she’d like her new classmates to believe. The truth is, while she may be one of the not-so-mythical bloodsuckers, she doesn’t really live up to the hype. She’s short and clumsy, and she can’t even suck blood properly! So when her classmate Tatsuta Ootori discovers her little “drinking problem,” he can’t help but lend a hand. Can he nurse Luna from the small, timid animal she is into a fearsome creature of the night?!

The coolest girl in class, Luna, ends up with a nothing boy, Tatsuta. Again. This time, she also happens to be a vampire whose true persona is that of an awkward dork who can’t properly suck blood to save her life, literally (see: manga title).

Well, this is one of those and I have read more than a few of these by this point. This is certainly another of ‘em and it’s not the worst thing ever, just aggressively middle tier for these sorts of things.

It has a couple flashes of being very clever - when Luna goes hunting for a club to join we get a decent montage that achieves a new level of insanity by its depiction of the paranormal investigation club (suffice to say, they prefer a very direct form of investigating). I wish the story was consistently so wacky.

But basically you’re here so the art can show Luna in all her glory while she and Tatsuta get closer. Since he’s feeding her it at least gives them a legit reason to hang out, so it’s only mostly forced.

I do like Luna’s design and thankfully she’s not shown as lasciviously as some characters in her position have been. She maintains about as much dignity as a character who literally goes into chibi mode when she’s drinking blood can manage.

It gets better as it goes along, one of those statements that makes me have a little hope for the future. Even the more blatant fan service character, Sakuma, is kind of fun with her intense volleyball energy. The way the class begins to worship both sides of Luna’s personality feels very audience surrogate in a cute way.

Still, this is exactly like every other one of these genre stories, clever bits and good art or not. Tatsuta could do with anything interesting about him; even his club is as predictable as all get out. It’s mostly amusing, not funny, with Luna being a crumb dropping slob a lot of the time.

And, you know, there’s a certain air of ‘chasing the trend’ with this. That happens a lot with manga, in my experience, but often the mangaka tweaks a couple things but not enough to keep it from feeling a little same-y. That’s certainly the case here too.

If you haven’t had your fill of the genre, it’s okay enough. I’ll give it another volume and see where we’re going with all this. And, hey, this premise is still far more believable than The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses.

3 stars - if you don’t like these sorts of stories, there’s nothing here that’ll change your mind. Judge accordingly.

Thanks to Yen for the DRC! Overall, this is a fun and light-hearted story about a young vampire struggling with her image as a vampire (needing to be cool and untouchable instead of cute and clumsy) and unable to properly consume blood (leading to the need for many snacks at her desk). Her imitations of her favorite manga character are the right amount of cringe and relatable, and her classmate (who just wants to remain invisible) is a sweetheart for trying to help her have space to practice and learn how to properly drink blood and interact more authentically with their peers.
Just as a random aside, I think it's really refreshing and cute that she shrinks when drinking blood and that instead of becoming hyper-sexualized (which happens for a lot of vampire stories), offering her blood makes her peers feel more like a mother.
Cute and lighthearted. I'll be looking forward for more volumes in this series!

Thanks to Yen Press for the DRC. The title of this series is absolutely wild, but I'm happy to say the wackiness of the story was a delight.

Enter Luna Ishikawa, our vampire who tries to put on a serious and cool demeanor but is actually just short, clumsy, and unskilled in one of the major duties of being a vampire - sucking blood. A classmate, Tatsuta Ootori, who refers to himself as a background character figures out her ineptness for sucking blood and offers to be her practice dummy.

Throughout some of the scenes in the manga, I found myself asking "where are the teachers?!" I never imagined there'd be a vampire story where . I'm really interested to see where the storyline takes us and to dig into Ootori's character and why they're so willing to lend a vein or three. Solid 3.5.

A really fun manga about a girl acting like she is all fantastic, but actually she is a vampire who cannot suck blood right!

I came across this one on Comics Plus and I was curious. The blurb sounded fun, the cover looked fun, but would Luna be annoying or just cute?

Well, I can tell you that this was all very wholesome and fun! Luna is just a wonderful character who comes across as cool and mature, everyone is very impressed by her and she is quite popular. Plus, she is a vampire. Yup. I thought at first that maybe this was a secret, or that people thought she was just faking it, but no everyone knows. Which raises some questions which I hope we get answered in the next volume. However, despite Luna’s cool attitude and /care moments, she actually has a problem. Or well two. One, she cannot suck blood for life which leads her to be hungry all the time, and two whenever she sucks she turns itty bitty tiny when she does try. Luna was just such a fun character (both her cute side and her I am a mighty vampire side) and I love how hard she tried to get better. Even researching for herself and figuring things out. Plus, I love that she throws some stereotypes to the ground. Her favourite food? Garlic. She can eat food, in fact she snacks so much I think that the stores around the school are doing super. However the snacks don’t fill her. She just stays hungry until she has had blood. But she likes the taste of food. Like a lot of recent vampire stories she uses sunscreen to get by the sun, though of course she much prefers something darker/shaded.

Insert Ootori, a guy from her class who defines himself as the background character and thus doesn’t feel like he should be in the spotlights so much given his blossoming friendship with Luna (and later a bit more, at least I am shipping them). He decides to help out Luna with her drinking/biting problem and offers his arm. Which leads to amnesia and also some motherly feelings. Motherly feelings, Mehsi? Yes, because Luna turns chibi she becomes like a little baby just clinging to her mom for food. And he won’t be the first to experience those feelings, haha. I really liked Ootori and I loved that he wasn’t the main main character. He is just a background character now thrown into the spotlight and still tries to get out of it. He just wants a quiet life, art club, snacks, and helping Luna.

Along the way these two enlist the help of another girl and then the whole class is into the secret. Which I love. A lot of stories like this just hide things, keep the secret secret, but in this one they just involve everyone and I loved seeing the class reaction to it all. In fact, they see it as a bonus. They get to have cool Luna and cute Luna.

The art is really fun. I love that the mangaka is showing all the sides of Luna perfectly. And I love the facial expressions on the other characters + their designs.

All in all, I cannot wait to see what is next for Luna, Ootori, Sakuma, and the class. Will they be able to get Luna to be a perfect/dark vampire? I would recommend this one to everyone looking for a fun manga!
