She's the cop's daughter taking names.
He's the bad boy taking down bad guys.
Sometimes rivals make the best crimefighting partners.

High school sophomore, Charisa O'Dell, has enough to do between homework, karate, and an upcoming school dance. However, when she is accidentally endowed with superhuman powers, she adds one more thing to the crime fighting.

Crime is a lot more complicated than her comics make it seem, and she finds herself relying on the mysterious Villain Hunter, who somehow shares several of her superhuman powers. Even so, the more she infiltrates the world of crime, the more she attracts the attention of the criminals. Will she survive her attempt to save the day?

A clean young adult blockbuster adventure featuring a Hispanic superhuman full of sass and her mysterious crime-fighting partner full of flirt— and a few explosions and bad guys for good measure. Perfect for fans of C.J. Hill and H.L. Burke.

I love superhero stories. I didn't realize how much until I watched Marvel's Avengers for the first time. And who doesn't want to be a superhero? To live life on the edge, to be gifted with amazing abilities, to have a higher calling- I want to be a superhero. And maybe I am, but part of the fun is secret identies, as you'll find in The Time I Saved the Day. Which may or may not be autobiographical (but probably not since I'm not a Hispanic American fourteen year-old)...

So, if you like probably-not-true-life superhero stories dealing with balancing your nocternal crime fighting lifestyle with your secret identity and learning to trust your mysterious side-kick (because we all deal with those issues), this book is for you.

/ what i loved
- it's about superheroes. i grew up with Golden & Silver Age Marvel comics, so i absolutely love reading books about superheroes (like Renegades , etc.)
- Charisa's dad is awesome. xD
- Kyle. <3 <3
- i liked how once Ninja & Hunter stopped a crime, they would call the police to have them pick up the muggers. something you don't see in comic books. that was cool. ;)
- it's completely clean & Christian, & it's not overly preachy or cliche.

/ what i disliked
- the writing style. *sighs heavily* again, this is just my personal opinion, but i really don't like the overly conversational style of writing. also, a lot of dialogue was stiff and stilted, and it felt just off.
- the ages. when i picked up this book, i assumed that Charisa & Hunter were at least 17. based on the cover, Charisa looks 17+. but they're sophomores. in high school. so they're 14 - 15 ish. just, no. also, Charisa said that she's been doing karate for twelve years? so, she's been doing karate since she was 2. *squints*
- again, the whole age thing made certain scenes uncomfortable for me. i'm not a fan of romance / dating / etc. at young ages, and 14 is way too young, imo. the
- Hunter's name. xD it's Villain Hunter. literally, Villain Hunter . Ninja is a cool name, but i wish that his was a little more unique & interesting.
- Charisa's so chill about the fact that she has superpowers. she , gets super-strength, etc., and immediately is like "now i have superpowers i must protect my city." idk, i feel like if i suddenly got superpowers, i'd freak out a little more & not immediately put on a scuba suit and go running around my city at night.
- seriously, HOW MUCH CRIME IS THERE IN THIS CITY??? it's worse than Gotham City, xD. idk how it is in big cities, but in my town, there's not muggings or robberies every night. i found the sheer amount of crime a little unbelievable.

all in all, "The Time I Saved The Day" is an interesting, fun read. not my favorite, but still enjoyed it. i'm reading the sequel right now. ;) and no, i did not binge-read it last night & immediately start the sequel at midnight. xD

3.5 Stars! =D

Special thanks to the author who gave me a free copy in exchange for an honest review. The author did not pay me for a review and all the thoughts here are my own honest opinion.

AHHH!!! THIS BOOK WAS SO COOL!!!

I know I have said in the past that I'm not really a superhero fan... Well, I'm still not. I'm a Spiderman fan, and I won't even lie. This is like the female version of Spiderman without the spider!!!

Well.... There was one spider.... EEK!!!

Seriously though! There's a high school. Someone who wanted to fight crime. A reporter character. A bully named Vanessa... A guy who Charisa wanted to be her boyfriend. And... And.... And....

"With great power, comes great responsibility, remember that, Pete. Remember that...."

Screech!

Even though, it was like a retelling, it also had a lot of originally.

Like, did you even wonder how Peter in Spiderman just knew how to fight and stuff? Like seriously, he figures out his superpowers and goes to fight in a ring.... At least Charisa had like eleven years of karate training behind her.

And Charisa worked with a partner. Hunter. He's pretty cool, guys.

Also, just wanted to say this because I'm fangirling right now. Did you know that Charisa can run about 150 mph??? How did I even get that figure, you might ask, well, let your mind be blown, but I actually did some math.... well sort of.... Hehehehe. Anyway, in the book, it says that she can get to the mall in fifteen minutes in a car. In most industrial areas the speed limit is 25-30 mph. Charisa can run to the mall in three minutes. 3 can go into 15 five times. 5 times 30 is 150. So that's how I got my figure. Give or take a few.

(I'm horrible at math.... No, I can't do your homework.)

Does anyone else ship Olivia with Andrew??? Like I totally ship them, they are so cute together! <3

And Kyle!!! Well, he kinda struck me as being rude at first, but then he kinda grew on me. Charisa just needed to give him a chance.

Why I Gave This Book 3.5 Stars:

Because of how fantastic this book is, it should have gotten a higher rating, right? Well, there were a few things that kind of bothered me in this book. And even though superheroes aren't really my favorite, that's not it. I love the superhero elements in this book. So let me tell you what I kind of had a problem with.

1. In the beginning... Characters would use clipped sentences when replying to one another.

Not really like that. But at the beginning of the book, characters are like:

""Morning, Dad; morning Mother," I greet.

"Good morning, Charisa." They said in unison."

They weren't always like this. But it is possible that it was taking me time to get used to the writing style or something. When Charisa got her superpowers, I wasn't having as much of a problem in this area, so I don't know.

2. Someone's parents not calling your parents.... Hmmm...

Okay, I get it, if a teenager friend tells a teenager friend not to call his/her parents, that friend might not call. But if a parent sees the teenager friend screaming and crying and just acting out of character, I do not see them not calling his/her parents. Like parents know this kind of stuff. I'm not a parent, but if I were to witness something like that, I would totally call the parents of that kid. Because that would be my responsibility to the parents and the kid.

3. Two teenagers, both age fourteen, are in a bar. Like, say again?

So, normally I wouldn't have a problem with this, as they weren't in for a drink and all that. BUT!!! This book takes place in the state of Alabama, which in most states in the USA, minors are not even allowed in a bar. Basically, you can't drink until the age of twenty-one, so there is no real reason for a teenager at age fourteen to even enter a bar.

Also, they enter the bar with Ninja wearing a diving suit, ninja rope, a ski mask, and goggles. With Hunter wearing military clothing, a gas mask, and a helmet. Basically they look a little suspicious, and they are without ID. And they probably don't sound like twenty-one-year-olds either. Yeah....

So I get it. The bartender is supposed to be a bad guy. We all know he is, but he also has a business to run. And if he is caught letting teenagers in the bar, things won't go well for him, especially if they found out about everything else he does on the side.

Also, most teenagers at the age of fourteen, do not, and let me emphasize that, do not have the money to bribe someone. So the fact that the bartender didn't even question that Hunter had money was a little, umm, odd. The bartender immediately thought that Hunter had the money without Hunter first showing it to him. Yeah.... I just don't know....

4. "This guy was trying to attack someone, so I attacked him!"

Yeah.... I would like someone to try to tell that cop today. Not really but, yeah...

So Hunter saw a mugger attacking someone, so Hunter intervenes. The victim runs away. So they wait for the cops. Look, it looks very suspicious when someone wearing a mask says that the guy down was attacking someone else and he just intervened. Sure, good deed, but it doesn't look all too good without the original victim to back the story up.

Yeah, yeah. I know, Hunter and the cop were friends. But I just don't know....

Content in Book:

1.

2. Superpowers.

3. Violence (hitting people over the head, punching, kicking, martial arts, fighting crime, shooting at people with a gun, using gas to knock someone out, etc.)

4. Teenagers going to a bar. Not to drink, but to bribe someone for information.

5. Stealing a car, and driving it without a license.

6. Teenagers sneaking out of the room at night to fight crime.

7. Faults identifications.

8. Crime (stealing, mugging people, stalking people, threatening to hurt family members to get what they want, holding someone against their will, etc.)

Will I Read the Next Book in the Series???

YES!!! Of course! Working on reading it right now, in fact.

Who Would I Recommend it To:

Those who like superheroes. Those who like Spiderman. Those who like books that have martial arts in them. Those who want to read more books about women superheroes. Just try it, you might enjoy it, =)

Wow, I so enjoyed this book!! Clever, Funny, Heart-Filled, Great Dialogue, Friendship, and a GREAT yet UNEXPECTED Ending...yeah, it was just SO GOOD! I had this ebook on my kindle for a long time and decided to give it a go...SO MUCH better than I thought it would be. One of the BEST Christian YA books I've read in a speculative way, you know, with the superpowers and all :)

My favorite characters were Chrissy's dad and her sister, Courtney, but I honestly loved her whole family and her two best friends, Nora and Olivia. Chrissy's elderly neighbor is also wonderful and the culprit of these superpowers, so well written. Usually parents are non-existent in YA, NOT in this book and for that I was grateful because Chrissy's family really enhances the story. So amazed she hasn't gotten caught yet but wondering if that will change in the series :)

LOOOOVED the banter between Charisa as Ninja and Villain Hunter, whom she names Hunter in the narration!!!

Oh my goodness, there is ONE scene with a spider in it, which was kind of creepy, but SO GOOD! The moment Hunter says he took his eye off that thing in its web, i KNEW it was BAD NEWS.

I laughed every time Charisa's Dad protested to her going on a date or talking to her date or insisting his girls would never date and he would find them husbands...so precious and clever!

I kind of figured out who Villain Hunter was before the end, but STILL a revealing and wonderful ending. My kindle said 90% and the story was suddenly over and I was like, "Wait!! I want more!" That rarely happens to me and I immediately bought the sequel. Love how Drew changed the covers, so much better than the previous ones. Highly recommend this series, Charisa is such a great and sassy character to root for! As tough as she is, she has a soft spot for her family and doing the right thing.

So, I think I've mentioned before that I'm on the fence about superhero stories in general. For me, the genre sort of straddles the line between sci-fi (which I enjoy) and fantasy (which I don't). Basically, the more scientific (or pseudo-scientific) the explanations of the superpowers are, the fewer qualms I have about the story in general. With that in mind, I decided to give this one a try and was pleased to find that it leaned toward the scientific-ish side of the spectrum. :)

I didn't have too hard of a time suspending disbelief with Charisa's super-abilities, although I found it slightly odd that no one else seemed to have a hard time believing her either. Not to say she didn't get some strange looks, but any time a rescued citizen asked "how'd you do that?" the answer of "I'm a superhero" seemed to be accepted without question. I mean, I think I'd have had a few more questions... But anyway.

I enjoyed getting to know Charisa and her friends and family and appreciated that they were mostly normal people with generally healthy relationships and not a lot of serious drama. I would have liked to get a bit deeper into Charisa's thoughts and feelings at times, or to have seen her struggle a bit more with some of the challenges she faced. But then again, this is a superhero story, and the genre does tend more toward action than character depth, so this probably fits the genre pretty well. I was a bit surprised that it took so long for a couple of characters to figure out a certain connection, but then I knew the connection going in, so I did have an advantage.

The only real issue I had content-wise was the fact that Charisa hid her abilities and her crime-fighting activities from her parents, although she did acknowledge at the end that she had been wrong. (From the preview of the sequel, though, it doesn't look like she's done much to correct that...) I really liked the respectful parent-teenager relationship that they had overall, but kids hiding things from their parents tends to bug me pretty bad in general.

I was a bit surprised at how the book ended and probably would have been disappointed if I didn't already know a little of how things were going to turn out. I really enjoyed all the humorous bits, though, and laughed out loud when Charisa was putting herself through the tests for various superpowers. XD I plan to continue the series. ;)

3.5 stars

Content--sneaking out and hiding things from parents; a lot of superhero-type violence (hitting, kicking, knocking people cold); some gunplay, including a few mentions of blood and wounds; mentions of deaths; robberies and muggings; teenage couples dance; talk about crushes; one almost-kiss

Review

📌Putting tea leaves in a safe is a little weird, but okay.

This book was an amazing and fun book that I really enjoyed and I'm actually heading over to read book 2 after finishing my review because it is THAT addictive and I don't even care that it's 12 am and I'm gonna start another book *(laughs maniacally 🤣)

Our protagonist is Charissa O'Dell who is the daughter of a police man and woman(late mother), her parents have raised her right and she's such a goody little helper to everyone she knows. And that's how she comes by the superhuman tea leaves (which tastes disgusting by the way), she becomes sick but when she gets better she finds out she has super powers. She wants to fight crime like the gas masked man who fought off the bank robbers on TV and like all the superheroes from her beloved comics she decides not to tell her parents about her superpower.

She has a crush on Carter but Vanessa has it in for her so she takes her bicker buddy Kyle from Karate to the school dance, but her nocturnal adventures and having a scheduled life is hard and makes one sleep deprived. Anyways Villian Hunter aka the gas mask man would have her back while fighting crime right........or won't he? Read to find out the twisty tangle of double life and a spark of romance.

The plot is very interesting and it doesn't have any negatives, the characters are very well written, the descriptive aspects are given enough to not ruin the pace of the book, the book is definitely one of my favourites from Jes Drew and will definitely recommend to readers who love comics, superheroes and MG or YA crime fiction.

If you’re an older reader, like I am, and you want to travel back in time and revisit your high school years, The Time I Saved the Day will do the trick. And even though the family of the heroine isn’t the typical family of years gone by, when mixed families were an oddity, Jes Drew demonstrates that the contemporary family can be just as warm and loving, and appreciated. It’s a refreshing and fast-paced adventure story as Charisa discovers her superpowers and stealthily follows in her father’s footsteps to fight crime, which doesn't keep her from living the high school experience, the sleep over, the studies, the dance, the high school cafeteria, and the like. There may be the typo here and there in the novel, but hardly enough to notice and certainly not enough to detract from the storyline. So it’s a well-written tale, driven by dialogue, that catches one a bit off-guard at the end.

Personally I felt like the writing and dialogue was a tad bit stilted at times, but overall I enjoyed it! I wanted to read something light that wouldn’t drag me down, and this definitely fit the bill, so that was great. At first I was a bit confused with Villain Hunter’s name, like, “Why would you trust somebody who literally has ‘Villain’ as part of his name?” And then I realized... “oh, wait. Villain /Hunter/.” *facepalm* I figured out Hunter’s alter ego pretty quickly, but there were a few twists I wasn’t expecting, so that was good. Honestly, I’m just surprised that more people didn’t figure out Ninja’s identity, but.. whatever.
So if you want a light, clean superhero story with a sprinkling of romance, The Time I Saved the Day would be great for you.

Decent book but immature writing—the bones are there, and they're good bones, but the writer didn't quite have enough experience yet. I did like Courtney and how she's a disabled character but still has a personality. Those can be hard to find.
