This is the second Bible storybook that I have reviewed from The Good Book Company. I wondered what would make this one distinct from the God’s Big Promises Bible Storybook, and they are different in multiple ways. The art style in The Kingdom and the King Storybook Bible is much less cartoon-style and uses more muted tones, and the stories are longer and more involved. Author Bob Hartman covers additional content and uses more sophisticated vocabulary, and also includes some tough details that people often gloss over with children.

This is a large, sturdy hardcover with thick, glossy pages and a ribbon bookmark. The book goes through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and it focuses on the theme of kings and leaders from throughout the Bible. The stories lead up to the reveal of King Jesus, and then show how Jesus fulfills the promises that God had given from the beginning. Hartman does a great job of showing how the Bible fits together as a single story, and the eye-catching illustrations from Catalina Echeverri help emphasize important concepts.

The storybook selections include specific narratives from the Bible, such as the story of Abraham and the story of Jesus's birth, but this book also includes summaries that help explain other parts of the Bible. For example, the reading about Isaiah explains what that book is about, gives some context for the time period, and shows how Isaiah's prophecies point forward to Jesus. I appreciate how Hartman curated a blend of well-known stories, lesser-known moments from biblical history, and summaries of less narrative-focused Bible books.

The publisher recommends this book for ages four and up, but some families may prefer to save this for when their kids are older, especially if they have sensitive kids who would struggle with some of the darker details. This book covers a variety of difficult themes, particularly from the Old Testament. For example, the author mentions a few times that when God's people would walk away from Him, some of them would kill their own children as sacrifices to pagan deities. If you don't want your four-year-old to know this, then you're better off pursuing another Bible storybook, but this book can help ease older children into a deeper understanding of the Bible, beyond sanitized and simplistic stories.

The Kingdom and the King Storybook Bible will appeal to Christian families who are looking for a Bible storybook that is faithful to Scripture, takes kids seriously, and gives kids a strong sense of the gospel story. This makes a great family read-aloud, and many parents will find it eye-opening and encouraging for them, too. I really enjoyed this book as an adult reader, and it made me love Jesus even more. And that is the strongest endorsement I can give!

I received a free copy from the publisher, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I havn't found many storybook Bibles that I will actually read with my kids, but this one I will. My children have already been very interested in it from the illustrations. Each chapter is a short retelling of the story with references to the actual Scripture references. The Old Testament stories not only tell the stories, but also explains a little in how it fits into the whole of the Gospel. While it doesn't do this extensively, it shows how stories like the story of Issac point to Christ.

Example: "'God knows your trust is in him alone.' Said the voice. 'For you were willing to give him your only son.' And those words were not only a celebration of Abraham's faith in God's promise but also a picture of how God would one day sacrifice his own son-that promised child (remember?), bruised by the serpent to crush the serpent's head.

Some storybook Bibles come across as irreverent to me, but this one is definitely not that way. It doesn't dumb down the language either and make it to simplistic.
I liked the way the Old Testament was done for this book, but the New Testament wasn't my favorite. I felt like it was a little more focused on God’s kingdom and how he is bringing a new kingdom (which is all true), but I felt like it was overly emphasized. The reason for Jesus' miracles were presented as pointing to the coming kingdom when all things will be made right. While this is true, His miracles really pointed to the fact that He was God. I wish this was made more clear in this storybook Bible.

"But why did Jesus do the two together- healing people and telling them about the coming of God's kingdom? It's because, as well as caring for people and helping them, Jesus wanted everyone to know that when he is King, things that are wrong are put right."

It explains that the miracles also fulfilled prophecy which I appreciated, but I wish it explained that it showed that Jesus was God incarnate.
So I loved the Old Testament part of this storybook Bible, but wasn't as crazy about the New Testament.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest thoughts.

Every page of The King & The Kingdom Storybook Bible by reminds us that the Bible isn’t just a collection of stories—it’s one big story of the King. 👑

With vibrant illustrations and clear, engaging retellings that are faithful to scripture, this book helps kids see how each part of Scripture points to Jesus and His kingdom. From creation to resurrection, little readers are drawn into the adventure of God’s rescue plan.

It’s gospel-centered, accessible for families, and perfect for sparking conversations that go deeper than just “knowing the stories.” Instead, kids discover the Story behind the stories—the King who reigns and the kingdom that lasts forever. 🌍✝️ I love how the theme of the kingdom seamlessly runs through each story, and that it ends with a section explaining other things can be our king and challenging kids (and parents) will Jesus be our King?

⭐️ Highly recommended for family devotions, bedtime reading, or as a gift that lays a solid foundation of faith.

Although my 3 year old is still a little young for it, I know it will grow with her & family Bible time will be more than just learning what happened, but discovering why it matters. The illustrations already drew her in, but i believe the thread of Jesus as King that will ultimately kept her attention and sparked big questions.

For me as a parent, that’s the beauty of this book—it helps little hearts see the Bible not as a puzzle of scattered stories, but as the beautiful picture of God’s kingdom and His King. 🌍✨

If you have been looking for a storybook Bible to read with your kids this fall, be sure to check out this new release from @thegoodbookcompanyusa .

While storybook Bibles will never substitute for reading to your kids directly from God’s Word, they have their place! And my kids and I have been enjoying this one together - the 4 year old up to the 7 year old. I love the discussions and opportunities for discipleship that have come about as we have read this book together.

Bob Hartman takes the theme of kingship in the Bible and draws it out in the various stories to always point back to the True King.

“God the King made a perfect universe, with a perfect world for the first people to live in, where he ruled as King. But that first family, Adam and Eve, turned away from God. They wanted to rule their own lives instead of living with him as their King…even while people were busy turning away from him, God began to make amazing promises to send his people a new King. He would be a reaching King whose kingdom would last forever.”

The illustrations are beautiful and detailed - love looking at them.

In The Kingdom and the King Storybook Bible, Bob Hartman brings God’s Word to life for your kids through 70 engaging and faithfully told Bible stories.

This beautiful storybook Bible arrived at the perfect time for my family! While my younger children still need me to read to them, my oldest is beginning to read much more independently. This book allows our family to experience and engage with God’s Word in different and meaningful ways.

He Rules the World

The illustrations by Catalina Echeverri are vibrant and captivating, truly helping to bring the stories to life. What I love most about this book is how it spans the entire scope of Scripture—from Genesis to Revelation—showing how the Kingdom is woven throughout the whole Bible.

The Kingdom and the King Storybook Bible will help your children see that we have a great and powerful King who rules the world with truth and grace, and it is good to be his people!

Finding new storybooks and Bibles is always a wonderful surprise. I love sharing them with my littles, and questions that they spark. It’s a great way for all of us to learn.

This particular one is a gem. Written in storybook form, it helps spell out the stories to make it easier for kids to understand. It’s well written and focuses on the major stories of the Bible.

The pictures are a great addition and there are some amazing graphics. They give something to reference when reading, and spark good conversations. We’ve really enjoyed seeing them and my kids look forward to looking at them as we read the stories.

This book is geared towards older kids. However, we’ve really enjoyed it in our own house and we’ve loved reading through it. It’ll be one to enjoy for years.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, received from The Good Book Company. However, all thoughts and views reflected are strictly my own opinions.

Every night I read a chapter of a storybook Bible with my 6-year-old daughter. We haven't finished this one yet, but my daughter has already said this her favorite one! She loves the colorful and captivating illustrations. It is also easy for her to understand, but the language is not overly simplified like some storybooks.

This storybook takes you through Genesis to Revelation and shows how we meet God "on the very first page of the Bible and on every other page too."

This is a beautiful and faithful retelling that makes for the perfect family read aloud. I am sure we will be reaching for this one again and again.

Such an excellent book and one of the most beautiful storybook Bible's available. It is truly a work of art. The words are just as lovely. It's written well and doesn't just "highlight" the popular bible stories. It really does take you through the entire Bible while always reminding us that God is our true King. It doesn't speak down to our children, but challenges them with good words and big ideas. This storybook would be great to use as a morning time devotional or as a family devotional before bed. It's just so excellent!
