His ghosts hover, tangible and ever-present, but do they mimic reckoning or redemption? Colton Langdon’s life is an angst-filled hell, and he’s well aware that he deserves it. Yes, after all his crimes and betrayals, life has fatefully twisted him to be…here. With a bullet freshly dug out of his kneecap and his mind still grieving over the death of his ex, he is simply stuck. Stuck with twenty-three staples holding his leg together. Stuck with a pair of crutches he’d love to chuck in a dumpster. And, coincidentally, stuck with Skylar Olson.
She is the human incarnation of sugar. Platinum blonde. Light as air with sea glass eyes. An ex-stripper who was around the wrong people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Held captive and assaulted in the exact same house where Colton’s knee was blown to bits, they’re now stuck together for the sake of their story to the authorities.
Their story is a lie.
Their lives as they know them—their closeness and their relationship—are a lie.
Colton is aware that the best lies begin from scraps of the truth, but those scraps are growing, weaving and wrapping around his heart like a wispy gauze.
Colton and Skylar may fall into the web of it all…but is it strong enough to allow them to survive? Author's Note for Tropes &

Eliza Modiste lives in Denver, Colorado with her husband, daughter, and an abundance of animals. Accountant by day and writer by night, she lives to mesh her characters together in ways that make her audience say things ranging from, “That’s hilarious,” to, “Kiss, dammit,” or, “Oh, God, don’t die.” What thrills Eliza most within her writing is all things spicy, laugh-out-loud banter, gasp-worthy suspense, and plot twists that could end in death and destruction.
When not writing, Eliza can be found baking, binging a television series, playing video games, or spending time with friends and family.
[I received a copy of this book from the author. This review reflects my honest and unbiased opinion]
THE WHAT This is the final book in the series, and the story follows Colton and Skylar as they deal with the aftermath of Officer Dowler’s arrest and everything that comes with being the Company’s target. Forced to trust one another, will this be enough for them to come out unscathed?
THE HOW We are taken through the story through both the FMC’s and MMC’s POV. The author took her time slowly building the relationship between the main characters through small moments that felt realistic and earned.
THE TROPES Slow burn, forced proximity, love after loss, found family, fake relationship, friends to lovers, kidnapping, small town, one bed.
THE MISS If I had to critique anything, the epilogue could have been shorter and more condensed. It did not take away from the story, but it felt a bit drawn out.
THE HIT The slow build of Skylar’s and Colton’s relationship was my favourite part. The trust between them felt earned and deep. The thriller aspect kept me hooked, and the pacing worked really well for such a long book. The tension was always there. For a 700 plus page book, it stayed engaging the whole time, which is impressive.
THE REC If you like slow burn romances with high stakes tension, I would recommend this book because this is definitely it!
THE OVERALL: I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to my followers.
I think I'm heartbroken 😭 I'm so sad this series is over! 🩵
@elizamodistewrites has just become one of my favourite ever authors with this debut series! I'm so thankful to have been sent an ARC of the fourth and final book of the Veiled series but I'm also kind of mad at you for finishing it 🤣🩵
Colton goes from being a pain in our arses, to somehow... Being likeable? 😳
A twisted, messed-up little family of friends, living through some horrendous chaos and still finding time to all fall in love - this is a series that you cannot afford to skip!
I absolutely love the way these books have been written. The way the characters come to life on a page, all their stories and lives mingling so naturally... And all the mess that unfolds 🤌🏻
If you love a romance, but have a need for some angst, some tension, and some straight up murder - this is for you 🙌🏻
Literally the first time we met Colt years ago I was in Eliza’s dms down bad and OBSESSED with him and BOY DID SHE DELIVER. That man is everything I wanted AND THEN SOME. His character development was INSANE and I'm pretty sure those of yall who didn’t like him to begin with will fall in love with him too! All the suspense in this one had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The spice and humor was great, but to see his relationship with his brother was my favorite part. And I really loved his brother’s relationship with Claire and Skylar. Without a doubt the best in the series.

A Lie That Starts to Feel Like Home—Colton Langdon is a man made of consequences. His ghosts don’t just haunt him—they sit at the table with him, follow him from room to room, and whisper in his ear about everything he’s done wrong. Fresh out of a nightmare with a bullet wound, an ex’s death weighing on his soul, and twenty-three staples holding his body together, he’s not looking for redemption. He’s not even sure he deserves it. Enter Skylar Olson—softness in human form. Sugar and sunlight. Platinum blonde with sea-glass eyes and a past that aches to touch. She was taken, hurt, used, and discarded in the same place Colton lost his ability to run from himself. And now? They’re stuck together in the aftermath. Their relationship begins in the aftermath of violence, with a lie that becomes a lifeline: 💔 fake dating to keep the story straight 🏚️ one bed because the world is cruel and funds are low 🖤 a web of lies that feel too much like truth 💋 banter that’s a shield and a lifeline at the same time This book understands something vital: sometimes survival forces you to build a narrative before you’re ready to live it. Their lies start as strategy. Then armor. Then comfort. Then a tether. What makes this story so compelling is that it doesn’t pretend love is a magic fix. Colton is still grieving, angry, brittle. Skylar is still shaking, healing, learning how to exist outside of fear. But together, they create space—awkward, messy, tender space—to breathe. To rest. To relearn what it means to trust someone with the parts of you that still bleed. Favorite elements: ✨ Fake dating that actually hurts in the best way ✨ One bed that carries the weight of everything unsaid ✨ Found family that sneaks in through the side door ✨ Love after loss, not instead of it ✨ A man who doesn’t believe he deserves good things learning patience anyway This isn’t a shiny love story. It’s bruised and trembling and hopeful. It’s about the kind of connection that grows in the cracks of broken places. About lies that become scaffolding. About two people learning that sometimes the truth hurts less when you don’t have to say it alone. By the end, I wasn’t sure if their story was leading them toward redemption or reckoning. But I was absolutely rooting for both. If you like small-town suspense, trauma-informed romance, broken characters choosing each other anyway, and banter that keeps them from drowning—this book needs to be on your TBR.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I waited a long time for this book and it did NOT disappoint!! 🤭😆
I've been waiting to see how Eliza would redeem Colton (highly suggest reading this series from book 1) and she served 😌
Him and Skylar were the best duo that initially I didn't see coming but they work so well together. The shared trauma they went through, the mutual understanding and care they have for each other was so beautifully written.
(Also so I smell something in the air about another Langston? 👀)
*this book was given to me as an ARC, this review is voluntary*
I received this book as an ARC from the author in return for my honest review. I have been a huge fan of the veiled series from the beginning, and I’m not sure if my mood was off for this read or what, but it was probably my least favorite. First, I felt that it was unnecessarily long and there were times I felt things were repetitive. I also just didn’t feel the relationship with the chosen family as much as I have in the others. I did LOVE Colt and Skylar though!! Skylar may be my favorite FMC in the series, she’s so kind and real, which is so relatable. Lastly, I appreciated how it all tied up with a bow and the reader isn’t left with unanswered questions. Eliza did get me, I thought I knew where it was going, and I was wrong; I really appreciate that in a suspense read.
I cannot wait for her next series, Molasses Falls, I know it’ll be good!
With the “Veiled” series, Eliza Modiste has explored many different themes and genres, demonstrating remarkable mastery of every aspect of her work, as only great writers can do. Each new release shows how the author’s writing gets more and more witty and deeply memorable. As the latest release within the series, “Tangled Veil” clearly proves this.
Each “Veiled” novel strikes a middle-ground between darkness and utter beauty, which makes them all amazing pieces of suspenseful romance. Intensely romantic and efficiently angsty at the same time.
True to that fact, “Tangled Veil” offers a thrilling mix of love, high-stakes mystery plot, and truly meaningful – poetic, even – character developments. As if it weren’t good enough, as a reader you can pick whatever “Veiled” novel you feel like starting to read the series with, because thanks to an extremely well thought-out sense of continuity, you will never feel lost.
As for this one, when destiny brings Skylar Olson and Colton Langdon together, the two of them find themselves forced to get closer and bond in order to survive and protect the people around them. One is a crippled repentant ex-wrongdoer with a complicated and painful past; and the other is a calm and kind-spirited young woman who got caught up in a story that wasn’t hers to begin with.
Slowly finding comfort and hope in each other, their budding affection is being challenged as the overpowering shadow of a killer worms his way into their lives and futures, which leaves them with no choice but to do everything they possibly can to escape this nightmare. Struggling with the spiral of lies they’re caught in and ever-present threats they constantly have to face, the protagonists’ chaotic reality seems to make it more than complicated for a love to bloom between them. And yet as the plot moves forward, we take delightful pleasure in following these characters’ story and experience it as intensely as if we were in their shoes.
Eliza Modiste is a master at writing epic, complex and yet extremely relatable and realistic love stories; just as much as she always knows how to take over contemporary ‘tropes’ and shape them to make her very own and unique kind of romanticism. Forget everything you thought you knew about ‘fake dating’ and ‘one bed’ tropes, for “Tangled Veil”’s romance delivers a whole new, subtle and fresh approach to them, starting with the characters themselves and the way they interact with each other. Every thing makes sense, nothing ever sounds out of place, and you feel close to the characters in a way you rarely ever do when it comes to fiction. On top of everything, the author also conveys the most sensible and healing kind of literary eroticism, away from all clichés and yet devastatingly sexy.
And of course, what’s even more satisfying for readers is that the narrative equally focuses on the romantic aspects as much as on mystery and tension. Entering Eliza Modiste’s world, you literally have it all.
“Tangled Veiled” not only is a captivating and entertaining novel that will keep you up at night, but it’s also a story about change, about loss, about letting go of the past, and about the power of connection between people through adversity. The very best of what contemporary literature can offer.
Tangled Veil is a dark romantic suspense that throws you straight into trauma, danger, and emotional baggage. The story blends crime & corruption, trauma bonding, forced proximity and fake dating. A slow burn romance and “Who can you trust?” paranoia.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 Colton wakes up in a hospital with a shattered knee and an even more fractured sense of safety. Skylar is there, hovering between stranger and lifeline, and from the start their dynamic feels tense in a quiet way. They find themselves in deep more and more.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦
Colton is the main guy, and you spend a LOT of time in his head but it works. He’s injured, traumatized, and clearly carrying a lot of emotional baggage. He overthinks everything, but in a very relatable way, like “sir please breathe” but also “okay yeah I get it.” He feels real. Messy, guarded, sarcastic, and lowkey soft underneath all that edge.
Then there’s Skylar, and I really loved her vibe. She’s quiet, observant, and just…steady and real. She’s not loud or dramatic, but she has this calm presence. The kind of girl who doesn’t say much, but when she does, it matters. There’s a lot of mystery around her, which keeps you curious, and her kindness never feels fake or naive, it feels intentional
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣 + 𝗥𝗢𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘
The romance? Slow. Burn. Like, slow slow but in a good way. This isn’t insta love or spicy from-page one. It’s the kind of connection that builds through shared trauma, small moments, and that “I shouldn’t trust you but somehow I do” energy. The tension is very much there. You can tell these two are carefully orbiting each other, figuring things out one step at a time. What really makes the book shine is the atmosphere. It’s moody, emotional, and introspective. You don’t speed through it, you sink into it. The suspense runs quietly in the background while the characters and their emotions take center stage. But not as much as I liked.
The book was long, too long in my opinion and that what made me pick it and put it back down for so many times. The beginning struggles with pacing, it drags. Some parts felt kind of repetitive.
𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦 Overall, Tangled Veil is perfect if you love some suspense mixed with your romance, slow burn, and some dark vibes.
Eliza Modiste’s Tangled Veil is the book that finally made me eat my words, because I spent three books side-eyeing Colton and absolutely did not expect to end this series wanting to wrap him in a blanket and tell him it’s all going to be okay. Thank you LoveNotes PR and the author for this gifted series of books, which I devoured faster than is socially acceptable.
Let’s address the elephant in the room: Colton. If you’ve read the Veiled series, you know he hasn’t exactly been charming. This book doesn’t magically fix him, and that’s why it works. His redemption arc is slow, painful, and earned through accountability, regret, and real growth. I didn’t just start liking him. I understood him, and that made all the difference.
Skylar is the emotional anchor of this story. She’s strong without being hardened, compassionate without being naïve, and she never exists solely to heal the male lead. She carries her own grief and history, and watching her navigate forced proximity, fake dating, and mounting danger with quiet resilience made her impossible not to root for. The slow burn between her and Colton feels organic, built on trust, shared trauma, and moments that actually matter.
The suspense is relentless in the best way. The lies stack higher, the danger closes in, and every time I thought I had the plot figured out, the story proved me wrong. I especially appreciated how the fallout after major events was handled instead of being rushed past for a tidy ending.
What truly elevates this book is the found family. The bonds between these characters feel lived-in, messy, and real. The loyalty, humor, and unwavering support balance the darkness beautifully and remind you why this series works so well.
“This book didn’t demand forgiveness. It earned understanding.”
The spice is open-door, intentional, and emotionally grounded, enhancing the connection rather than replacing it. As a series finale, Tangled Veil sticks the landing with heart, closure, and depth.
This is the fourth book in a series of interconnected standalones. It is best to read in order before starting this book. However, it is set up to where you could start here and understand the story, but you would miss out on so much character growth and development, and everything flows between the 4 books; you would miss out on some key moments. I would recommend starting with Thinly Veiled and getting the full experience plus there is amazing banter between all of the characters in all the books so why miss out on some amazing writing!
Colton and Skylar as a couple was perfect! We have met Colton before, and he wasn’t my favorite by far. He really came around in this book, and I have to say I find him much more likable after finishing this book. His character growth and development over the 4 books was one of the best I’ve seen in a while. Skylar was the perfect match for Colton. We did meet her in the third book, and I was excited to read about her in Tangled Veil. She is strong, sweet, and independent! I loved the chemistry between Colton and Skylar!
I love the location this series takes place in! The Appalachian Mountains, Virginia, and North Carolina hold a special place in my heart!
I also loved how Eliza wrote each book that had its own twists and turns that leaves you wanting more when the book ends!
Overall, Tangled Veil and the entire Veiled series is perfect for those that love romantic suspense books that bring amazing banter and great, relatable characters. There is crime, romance, fake-dating, humor, and spice. This book will have you on the edge of your seat! 5 stars!

💙💥
Twisty, tense, romantic, slow, spicy & chaotic! Blend those all together and you get Tangled Veil in a cocktail. Question is, do you wanna take a sip? Coz if yes then buckle in.
For fans of the Veiled series this is the last book in this interconnected standalone world, best to read them all indeed but if you haven't you can more or less still fit in.
Skylar & Colton were such a sweet couple together. I loved watching them fall in love. Colton is that morally gray dude from back in the series that you learn to like but still be fully unsure how you feel about him. However I recall telling Eliza that I liked Colton and was hoping to see his book next and lo & behold she did have one planned for him.
I really enjoyed revisiting this world & its inhabitants. Seeing the whole family gang here and of course meeting Colton's brother, Asher from Molasses Falls. Btw I'm so ready for that cozy small town to feature as Eliza's next series. Count me in! I like Asher so I'm eager for his story.
Back to Colt & Sky. This was such a ride they'd been on with their lives on the line but these 2 made their romance work even in such a dire time like this one.
I'm happy everyone is happy and that Colton got Sky, you just know that they have that love that's gently wild & intensely solid.
As the story concludes tho you just have an inkling that this isnt the last we'll see of the Salem gang and certainly not the last of Colton & Skylar considering they're now occupants of Molasses Falls which is where we'll be heading to next in Eliza's writing. Lessgo!
First a big Thank You to the author Eliza Modiste for the opportunity to read your series!!
Such a great continuation to the story of “the Scooby-doo gang”. At first I was unsure with how I felt about Colton. He was into some pretty rough and sketchy things. You can even say that he was just lost for a little while.
Colton- such a misunderstood character but he has a well deserved redemption story! I enjoyed his growth throughout the book, he showed his vulnerabilities and worked through them. He has suffered through so much that by the time he met Skylar, he was metaphorically drowning. In a short amount of time he was able to find himself, and he realized that he needed her as much as she needed him.
Skylar- such a sweet and innocent woman, I loved how simple (yet complex) her character was. I loved her growth and the confidence she gained with Colton standing by her side. (Relatable because my husband in a way is like Colton, he allows me to stand on my own while simultaneously being a support.) Skylar was just trying to live life her own way doing what brought her joy, and to do that under the thumb of someone who prioritizes their own image is also relatable, and I enjoy stories where I’m able to relate to the characters (makes me feel more immersed in the story)
I hope you can forgive Colton like I did, he didn’t deserve all of that pain.
Wow! Eliza Modiste truly stuck the landing with Tangled Veil, the fourth book in the Veiled series. I was hooked from the start and absolutely devoured this book in one sitting! The dynamic between Colton and Skylar is fantastic. Colton has been a rather unlikable character throughout the series, but his redemption arc here is everything I hoped for and more. The way he transforms from an almost-villain to a swoon-worthy "book boyfriend" is a testament to Modiste's writing. Skylar is the perfect match for him: strong, sweet, and with an empowering backstory as an ex-stripper who owns her choices. Their relationship, which starts as a necessary fake-dating scenario to cover up a crime, builds with a healthy slow-burn that felt genuine and earned. The trust they build while navigating a tangled web of lies and danger is the heart of the story.
This book has all my favorite tropes: 💙 Small town setting 💙 Web of lies & Fake dating 💙 The "One Bed" trope 💙 Love after loss 💙 Found family & great banter
The romantic suspense elements kept me on the edge of my seat with great plot twists, but the character development is where it really shines. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves a spicy, witty romance with depth and suspense!
Having read the other 3 books in the series I was happy to learn there was a fourth book. This one gives more of an insight into Colton and gives background on why he is like he is and what happened between him and Claire in the past.
This book follows on from the end of the third book, Shattered Veil, with Skylar dealing with the ordeal of her abduction. Colton is still looking for revenge over the death of his ex-girlfriend and is suffering after being shot in the knee but Skylar is the distraction he didn’t know he needed. This is not your typical fake dating romance to keep the authorities off their back, its dark, mysterious and dangerous as they are forced to flee their home when warned of an impending danger. Colton’s redemption is built up over the course of the book and if you started off not liking him then you will change your mind by the end of it. Skylar is an ex-stripper with a calm presence whose history leads you to believe what she says she means. She brings something out in Colton he never knew existed. This is a slow burn so don’t expect spicy scenes from the beginning. In fact the slowness works for these two as they begin to open up to each other.
I did feel however, that this book was hard to get into. The beginning felt like it was dragged out and I struggled to carry on reading it. The second half was much better and a lot more engaging. The suspense was there to carry on to find out what the next twist and turn was and what revelation was next to be dropped. That saying these books are cleverly written and you never know what is going to happen next. I would recommend this series to someone who is a fan of the genre.
I received this as an advanced reader copy and have left my own review
I wanted to enjoy Tangled Veil but overall it fell flat for me. The premise promises a mix of romantic suspense, fake-dating trope, and a small-town setting that could have made for a compelling story, but the execution was disappointing. The overview highlights Colton Langdon and Skylar Olson getting thrown together under false pretenses and suggests emotional depth and intrigue, yet the novel often leans too heavily into predictable romance clichés instead of fully exploring the suspense elements that could have elevated it.
Unfortunately the characters felt underdeveloped and the chemistry between them lacked the spark needed to carry the narrative. Where the book could have built tension around their fake relationship, it instead relied on familiar twists that feel recycled from other entries in the genre. There were moments where the emotional stakes were hinted at, like Colton’s struggles with his past, but these lacked the depth and nuance needed to make them truly impactful or original.
I also found pacing issues and a lack of clarity in key scenes, which made it harder to stay engaged. Tangled Veil has elements that could work for fans of light romantic suspense, but for me it missed the mark, sorry.
Tangled Veil ( The Veiled Series Book 4 ) Tropes ⭐️Web Of Lies ⭐️Small Town ⭐️Fake Dating ⭐️One Bed ⭐️Found Family ⭐️Love after Loss / second chances ⭐️ romantic Suspense, and all the angst , spice and banter you could ever want or need . This Series OMG !!! This spectacular series !!! I’m just so freaking obsessed and in love with . What a queen Eliza truly is. This fantastic world she has created is like no other . All the characters/ couples filled with so many different layers and complexities, I mean really how do you even choose a favorite couple or story ? I have to say I never thought I could, until I read Colton and Skylar’s . These two just might be my all time favorite yet . The insane chemistry between them so freaking hot , you could literally see the steam and feel the sparks 🔥 coming right off the pages. But it was so much more than that . And to be completely honest I really cannot put into words exactly what it was that had me falling so in love with these two . All I can say is that it’s not often I come across a series that has the ability to Hook me and keep me hooked through each and every installment. That has the ability to touch my heart and resonate with me quite the way this book and series has done.
Colton and Skylar story. After being shot in the knee,Colton have more problems now,not only the dirty cop have amnesia,it seem no one believe his and Skylar story about what happened.Forced to protect their friends, they need to work together ,but when the cop Randy is found dead,Colton and Skylar need to hide,as there is no loose ends and their life is once again in danger.
Will they ever be safe?
Great book four in the series, the suspense was keeping me on my toes,I was not sure how all will end.Romance in this book was sweet, the chemistry between Colton and Skylar was hot and they have this tender moments. In the first book I didn't like Colton,he was piece of work, but I liked how he changed and was really sorry trying to fix in some way his past mistakes.Good end to the series, hope to read now about his brother Asher,as I feel there could be a story in Molasses Falls.
If you like romantic suspense with some spice and sweetnes I would recommend this book.
Thank you booksirens and author for arc,my review is honest and my own.
This is the final book in the series and man did it keep me on my toes! Every chapter was intense and written in a way that made me want to keep reading for the sole reason to find out what was going to happen next.
I admit, I wasn’t a fan of Colton going into this book. His character was not one I wanted to read about, but now that I had the chance to get to know him better I saw how guilty he was for the things he’s done in the past and how he genuinely changed. So while I still don’t love him I did come to respect him and understand him by the end. Plus the romance between him and Skylar didn’t hurt that any.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. It was probably my least favorite of the series simply because it took me awhile to connect with the characters. But it had a good amount of suspense and thrilling adventures. Some spicy and sweet moments of romance. And I loved seeing how the entire character group ended their journey. Definitely a series worth picking up if you like intriguing storylines with some violence, romance, and lots of suspense!
The Veiled Series is a beautifully dark, emotionally rich series that I ended up absolutely devouring. While each book follows a different couple, all four installments are deeply connected through a central storyline that continues to evolve and expand with every new perspective. Tangled Veil was the biggest surprise for me. Colton had previously been a character who often annoyed me, but this book completely reframed him. Through Sky’s story, we get to see his vulnerability, his loyalty, and his quiet determination to do right by the people around him, even when he doesn’t believe he deserves them. The dynamic between him and Sky added so much depth to both characters. One of the strongest aspects of this series is how naturally the overarching plot grows. Each couple brings new layers to the story, addressing different kinds of trauma without ever feeling like filler or unnecessary additions. The darkness intensifies at times, and readers should absolutely check trigger warnings, as the series includes kidnapping, torture, and other heavy themes. Overall, this is a series I’d rate between 4 and 5 stars depending on the book, with Tangled Veil being a very strong entry. I’m incredibly grateful I got to ARC read it and I cannot wait to continue reading more from Eliza Modiste. ⭐️ 4.5 stars
OMG besties… "Tangled Veil" had me torn between skimming and smirking... and honestly, that’s not a bad place to land. Colton is walking angst with a limp and a guilt complex, while Skylar is pure sugar-coated strength wrapped in survival instincts. The slow burn is slow... like, bring snacks slow... and there are moments where the details pile on (yes, the cellphone store scene could’ve been cut 😅). At times, it dulled the suspense and had me speed-reading.
But hang in there. Once it warms up, the forced proximity and fake dating start hitting just right. The banter absolutely carries this book, adding much-needed spark and levity to this story. It’s not perfect, but it is compelling, emotional, and worth the read... especially if you love guarded MMCs, found family, and lies that blur into something real.
My Ratings: ⭐ 4/5 ▪︎ 🥵 3/5
🥀 For my rating scale breakdown, head over to my Goodreads &/or Amazon profile! 🖤
I absolutely was swept away in this drama, with the perfect balance of suspense and dose of romance! This played like an excellent mini series I'd wanna see! Slow Burn, which I love to see but is so hard to find nowadays. I loved how this actually explored the nuance of a push-pull relationship.
Colton has a muddy past but his path crosses with Skylar in a beautiful and complex way, in that he helped save her (having gotten shot) but that also his history is a bit inextricably woven into hers.
The drama has beats of angst filled tension I ate up (loved how his recovery played into this too...that it was constantly part of the narrative and not forgotten or that he's magically cured after they get close, like in other books).
This is has tensuon, has moments of lightness, a sometimes grumpy but protective and caring mmc, and a sharp fmc in Skylar. I loved them both and the plot and characters always worked hand in hand! Stellar job!
We are back in Salem, VA, for the story of Skylar and Colton. It starts right after the last book ends, with Colton and Skylar at the hospital after her kidnapping. Colton is recovering from surgery, while Skylar was there to keep up their cover that they were friends.
This is a slow burn, close proximity romance. They had to stay together, first for his comfort of having help after surgery and later for their safety.
The gang is still feeling from all of the situations they've dealt with over the past year. And it isn't over yet, with a dirty cop looking to get rid of them for knowing just a bit too much.
Eliza is great at building the detailed tension of the plot. It took me a bit longer to connect to these two characters. Saying this, I really enjoyed their love story.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received an e-ARC for this one, and I’m so grateful. Full disclosure, I do wish I’d read the previous books beforehand, but this story still gave me a clear sense of the past, and I could truly see the character development and growth Colton experienced here. This book had my mind spinning. I genuinely did not see the twists coming, and I was completely hooked. Skylar was an absolute sweetheart, and I adored her with Colton. He’s the quintessential bad boy with a very real, very tender heart and a storm of emotions underneath. It made my heart do things. What I loved most was that there wasn’t a clear “he fell first” or “she fell harder” moment. Instead, their love and longing built gradually and beautifully for both of them, unfolding at the same time. Completely heartwarming to the core.
So I know it said that it was a fake dating book. However, I feel like this is not just a fake dating book but a fake friendship. It starts out with a completely fake friendship that escalates into a fake dating relationship to get them out of trouble. She does amazing with making you feel. Sorry for the male character and wondering whether or not your emotions are going to be okay by the end. I had to take this book and take it in four parts because it was like heavily mentally and emotionally raw like you could fill both of their pain. The pain of a girl who only wanted to be loved by her dad who wanted to be, but you could also feel the pain of losing a loved one on his side you. You just felt all of their pain and like she did amazing writing it into these pages.
I didn’t breeze through Tangled Veil—and I don’t think you’re meant to. This book sits heavy, in the best way. Colton and Skylar are both deeply scarred characters, and their connection grows slowly, cautiously, and realistically. I appreciated that the romance never erased the trauma; it had to coexist with it.
The writing is immersive and emotionally raw, though at times the inner monologues felt repetitive and slowed the pace. Still, the psychological depth more than made up for it. This is not a fluffy romance or a quick thriller—it’s a story about survival, trust, and choosing connection after loss.
If you enjoy dark romance with substance, morally complex characters, and unresolved tension that feels real, this book is worth your time.
So after reading book one I never in a million years thought id like Colton but well I was wrong. Tangled Veil was one of the best books ive read in awhile.
Colton & Sky had the best story. Their interactions, every single one made me love them even more. This one was a roller-coaster of emotions never knowing what was gonna happen next and I couldn't put it down!
While ive only read book one and now book four I will definitely read two & three and anything else this author decided to write. Eliza Modiste fan for sure!

On StoryGraph, I gave this a 3.5 since Goodreads does not have partial stars available.
While this book took a little time to get into, once I hit the halfway point, I was hooked. The plot really takes off, using a mix of mystery and conflict to drive the story forward in an exciting way.
The characters are fantastic and felt believable. I especially loved Skylar—she has so much depth beneath the surface, and I found her relatable. Colton and Skylar’s dynamic is a highlight, and their journey made for an interesting read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Holy smokes! First off, thank you Love Notes PR for this beautiful ARC opportunity!
I genuinely wasn’t sure what to expect before reading this book, but boy am I so thankful I got the opportunity to read this book! Holy smokes was this a phenomenal read or what! I genuinely wasn’t sure obsessing over the story and characters! Colton and Skylar were the absolute best! Colton was so chaotic and Skylar was so calm that it was just the perfect match! The mystery and development between these two was just addictive through and through! Absolutely definite recommend! I couldn’t stop reading once I started!
I loved this! I loved seeing this Colton. He was real, apologetic of things he had done in his past and completely vulnerable. His and Skylar’s slow burn, fake to real relationship gave me all the feels. The plot was great, the spice definitely hit and the suspense had me on the edge of my seat. This was such a great end to the series!
This was a long book, but I honestly feel like it needed to be. We needed the slow burn and build up for the relationship. We needed the suspense and full conclusion to everything these characters endured in the series. The whole book was amazing.

First I would like to thank Love Notes Pr for this arc. Tangled veil is 4th book of a suspenseful series that follows Colton & Skylar that has fake dating, emotional, danger & love after loss. I didn’t know this was a series so I will be reading the other 3 books to get to know the stories of the other characters and whatever is next. Overall this was a pretty great read but some parts where a bit flat and I would have loved if some parts where more focused then just a quick dialogue and moving on. I thought that the both main characters were sweet to each other which was one of my favorite parts.
