One girl’s secret, a school’s silence. The power of revealing the truth.
Holly has always been the invisible girl at school, but she holds a powerful secret. As the anonymous keeper of the Instagram account “Anonymously Yours,” she collects and shares the confessions of her classmates.
When a series of events forces her to reveal her identity, Holly must navigate new friendships, repair old ones, and face challenges that test her resilience. Will Holly’s revelations bring her closer to her peers, or will they push her further into the shadows?
For fans of Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
A book that immediately captivated me! The structure of the story is strong, and it reads very smoothly. The characters are well-developed, making them easy to distinguish from one another, and because it’s written in the first person, I understood the main character very well and why she made certain decisions throughout the book. The emotions are well handled, creating a nice balance between tension and sensitivity. The story was very believable and could easily happen in real life, which is why it captivated me so much.
I read in other reviews that the book seemed similar to A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, but personally, I found the story unique and much faster-paced. The ending was a bit predictable, but it didn’t bother me too much.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who’s into YA books with a mysterious twist.
If A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and Gossip Girl had a chaotic little Gen Z sibling, Anonymous Confessions of a Broken Heart would be it. This book is all about high school drama, an anonymous gossip page, and a main character who is way too comfortable walking the fine line between “spilling the tea” and “completely ruining lives.” And honestly? I had a blast reading it!
First of all, the writing style? Chef’s kiss. It’s fresh, current, and there are references to shows like Wednesday and Stranger Things sprinkled throughout. Sure, that makes the book very much of THIS time, but I didn’t mind—I love when books feel plugged into pop culture. Plus, the way everyone was obsessed with checking Holly’s Instagram page for new gossip took me right back to my own high school days, when Hyves was basically a rumor mill.
Holly herself is such a mood at times (girl turns herself into a blanket burrito when she’s sad, and honestly? Same). But, uh… she also makes some highly questionable choices. Case in point: getting upset about a guy she likes hanging out with another girl and deciding to post a rumor about him—including details that only she would realistically know. Holly, girly, do you want people to figure out it’s you? Because this is how people figure out it’s you.
Now, let’s talk about these characters’ ages because I was confused. I thought they were around 14, but then they’re casually drinking coffee, dropping deep, philosophical one-liners like seasoned college students, and one girl is talking about getting drunk?? Make it make sense. I was definitely not spitting poetic lines about life’s hardships at 14—I was too busy figuring out how to make my eyeliner look even. So yeah, I guess they’re not 14?
While the book was a fun and fast read, I do wish it had been longer. With a bit more build-up, some foreshadowing, and a little extra misdirection, the mystery could have hit harder. The twists felt a bit too straightforward, but the drama kept me hooked.
Favorite Quotes: 📖 “Her messages only served to intensify my sadness, as if I were mourning the loss of someone who was still very much alive.” 📖 “Life has this way of making us grow and change, whether we want to or not.”
Final thoughts? Messy, dramatic, and totally bingeable. Just… maybe don’t take social media advice from Holly.
"Een juicechannel die juist goede dingen aan het licht brengt! Dat klinkt toch fantastisch?"
💔MIJN SAMENVATTING💔 Wanneer beste vriendin Mona plots verhuist, blijft Holly achter.
So… Anonymous: Confessions of a Broken Heart sounded like it was going to be full of drama, secrets, and shocking twists, and technically, it is. The problem? None of it really hits. The characters make random decisions, the “big reveals” are easy to guess, and the emotional moments feel more like a soap opera than real teenage heartbreak. I kept waiting for that “wow” moment that never came. It’s not terrible, just forgettable. Think of it as the kind of book you finish, shrug, and immediately move on to something else.
I had high hopes for this novel, the idea of a hidden Instagram account exposing school secrets is compelling, but ultimately it didn’t quite deliver. The premise is strong and there are moments of real tension, yet the momentum suffers from a lack of fully fleshed-out characters and emotional investment. The main character, Holly, remains somewhat distant, and I found myself wondering why I should care when so much of the story is told rather than shown. The final reveal felt rushed and surprisingly flat given the build-up.
"Anonymous Confessions of a Broken Heart" is the perfect combination of high school drama with some thriller elements. This book had me hooked from the very beginning until the bitter end.
In this book, we follow Holly. Her best friend has just moved to another town, and at school, she feels completely invisible. In her loneliness, she decides to start an anonymous Instagram account called Anonymously Yours, where she publishes the secrets of her classmates. But when she is confronted with a dark confession, she becomes desperate to solve the mystery surrounding it—even if it means revealing her identity and risking her friendships.
This book delivers everything you'd want from a high school drama, and I had such a good time reading it. Holly is a very relatable character, and although her choices aren’t always right, her reasoning is understandable. For a relatively short book, the story is well-developed, and so are the side characters. The dark secret creates an intriguing mystery and adds just the right amount of thriller to the plot.
The writing style is smooth and engaging—it pulled me in right away. The book is fast-paced and can easily be read in a single day. The ending fit the story perfectly, and everything felt complete.
This book is definitely a must-read for fans of high school drama with a twist of mystery! Perfect for fans of "A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder."
Mega leuk verhaal, inderdaad zoals vaker genoemd echt een mix tussen gossip girl en a good girl’s guide to murder!
Okay, where do I start with this review? Mystery books are normally not the ones I go for, but this really was a fun read! This book had everything I expected: mystery, lies, secrets, betrayal and threats. As a teenager, I was a huge fan of Pretty Little Liars and this story gave me the same vibe.
In the story, we follow Holly, a very quiet but good student. She only has one real friend - who recently moved away - and hides in the library during lunch break. To feel less invisable, she creates the Instagram account “Anonymously Yours", where she reveals secrets and confessions of her classmates.
Mystery books are ones I usually skip, but I think I will stop with that in the future. I really liked looking at all the characters and wondering if they are allies, enemies or just suspects.
Everything about this book give me flashbacks to that time I was obsessed with Pretty Little Liars. And, you know? Holly reminded me of someone in that series. More than once I was annoyed by her, but she reminded me of Alison DiLaurentis (of PLL). You kinda hate her, she does things that make you want to rip out your hair and at the same time... you also kinda love her. The author also announced on her Instagram that she deliberate choose to give her mistakes, let her complain because it makes her 'real'. And that is true: despite everything she does, I did like her.
It was, unfortunately, a very short read. The book could be a 100 pages longer and I wouldn't mind. The plot of this story was very good, but because it is such a thin book, it al went a bit too fast for my liking. It is also why the ending was a bit underwhelming. What happend an sich was very good, but it went too fast.
Looking at the cover and synopsis of this book, I expected an easy read. So, I was kind of surprised that this book had a trigger warning. You don't get the details or a full page description of what is happening, but know that sexual assult is a topic in this book and it has an influence on the plot. Be aware of this.
Despite the length of this book, I really enjoyed reading it. It is perfect for the Pretty Little Liars and A Good Girl's Guide to Murder fans. This book is in English, so it is ideal for the Dutch and Flamish teens who prefer reading in this language (! be aware of the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book !) and because it is so thin, it is also a good book for people who don't like thicker books, just get into reading or just are looking for a quick but fun read.
Thank you, to the author and publisher for the ARC.
This book by Stefanie Sybens (Hamley Books) is not just a visual masterpiece—those stunning sprayed edges and the beautiful cover—but also a gripping whodunnit with an emotional twist.
Holly feels lost after her best friend Mona moves away. To fill the void, she creates Anonymously Yours, an account where she collects and shares her classmates’ secrets. What starts as a thrilling experiment soon spirals out of control when she receives an anonymous confession: a girl was raped at a party. Holly is determined to unmask the perpetrator—but one of the main suspects? Her new crush, Johannes…
💭 This book had me completely hooked! I kept speculating about who the perpetrator could be and searched every chapter for clues. For the first time, I even took notes on my prime suspects and shifting emotions—so much fun! And that subtle touch of romance? Definitely a big plus. ❤️💔
📚 A must-read for fans of mystery, secrets, and unexpected twists!
This was a short read that gave "Gossip Girl" meets "A Good Girls Guide To Murder" Vibes.
It was a good coming of age story mixed with mystery and an unfortunate tragedy. The character growth was pretty good and I loved Holly's sense of justice and how she didn't give up.
I have to be completly honest and admit that Holly throughout the story did annoy me multiple times but that could just be my age as I'm not a teenager anymore and it did involve typical teenage thinking and teenage drama 😂. She did however turn that around at the end with her growth.
"Life has this way of making us grow and change, whether we want to or not."
This book reminded me why I should read YA thrillers more often—it was so addictive, I couldn’t put it down and finished it in two evenings.
The story is about Holly, a 16-year-old student who secretly runs the Instagram account called "Anonymously Yours", where her classmates can anonymously share their deepest secrets and confessions. When she suddenly receives a shocking and traumatic confession, she is determined to unravel the truth. But to solve the mystery, she has to reveal her identity. Therefore Holly must forge new friendships and repair old ones, while confronting obstacles that challenge her strength. Will her revealed identity bring her closer to her friends or will they drive her deeper into isolation?
The author immediatly got me hooked by sharing a suspenseful flashforward. The writing style is fast-paced and simple, which made it easy to follow. I loved the references to modern shows like The Traitors and Wednesday, along with the HUGE amount of high school drama, which made me glad that these days are far behind me 🤭
I liked Holly as a main character because she was kind of relatable as a fellow booklover and introvert. I have to admit, there were times when she kind of annoyed me. I'm not entirely sure why, but maybe it's on me because she sometimes behaved like a typical teenager, and I'm almost 28 (👵🏻). Also, she posted a confession about a friend, sharing details only she would know, and I thought, why would you do that if you don't want your identity to be revealed!? Despite that, I loved her character development. It was admireable how she stood up for another student and wouldn't let anything get in the way of seeking justice. Besides Holly, the book also introduces great side characters like Mona and Johannes, and I especially related to Johannes' reveal about his perfectionism and anxiety.
Overall, it was an incredibly binge-worthy and captivating story that got me hooked with it's drama and mystery. It definitely gave off Pretty Little Liars x A Good Girl's Guide to Murder vibes. Plus, it had a bit of a modern, online Lady Whistledown feel—except in this case, Holly takes the role of Lady Whistledown, and it’s all about college students instead of the ton. 😉 I’m giving this book 4.5 stars because I managed to predict the big plot twist at the end. It would have earned a full 5 stars if the twist had been a bit more surprising.
Tropes: 💞 Double life 🤫 Secrets exposed 💔 Best friends to strangers
I want to start by saying that Holly and Pip (from agggtm) would make great friends!
I really like the story itself, but I expected a bigger plot twist. Who is Harry, suddenly?! I thought the story was a quick read, but because of that, I felt the ending was rushed.
I did really like the situation between Holly and Johannes tho!
But it was a short and quick book that got me reading again!
Anonymous confessions of a broken heart – Stefanie Sybens
One girl’s secret, a school’s silence. The power of revealing the truth.
An amazing fast paced mystery book from a Belgian writer living in London. This is Stefanie’s first English mystery novel. I had the pleasure meeting her at the Standaard Boekhandel YA-day in Gent.
This book has a high Holly Jackson vibe, and don’t we all love her? Even the main character in this book is named Holly! Holly is in highschool and she does not really fit in. One day she decides to open up an Instagram account where fellow students can send her anonymous confessions which she then post. One day Holly gets a confession that turns her life upside down. This book was a perfect ‘in between’ book for me. It has 280 pages and reads comfortably easy and fast. I was happily surprised that I wasn’t sure who did what and how this book would end, since I have told you guys before I almost see every plot twist ever coming. This is a book I would totally recommend to anyone who likes to read mysteries and people who love Holly Jackson’s books. I give this book 4 stars!
Gossip Girl meets A Good Girl's Guide To Murder in Stefanie Sybens' new YA crime novel!
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐭 In Anonymous Confessions of a Broken Heart, we follow Holly. She doesn't have a lot of friends at school, especially since her best friend Mona moved away. When she start an anonymous Instagram account 'Anonymoulsy Yours', she becomes famous overnight without anyone knowing it's her. Through the account, classmates share their biggest secrets. Until one earth shattering secret leads to threats and Holly has to decide if she wants to reveal her identity or not.
𝐀 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 I was immediately immersed in Holly's world. Stefanie has a very fluent writing style, which made reading this book super easy. While non-Native English speaking authors sometimes don't deliver great English tellings, I had no issue like this with Anonymous Confessions of a Broken Heart. Since this also a short book (around 150 pages), it's the perfect bingeread!
This book also keeps you on the edge, especially the action-packed scene near the ending/reveal. I enjoyed the tension-building and the guessing throughout the whole story. There are also some important themes that play a big part in this book, which made this a heartfelt novel as well.
Personally, I'm a fan of recognisable elements in books. This story was very good at including present-day elements. For one, there is the use of Instagram, but we also see WhatsApp and voices messages in the book. References to pop culture like Wednesday and Eleven were also nice to read.
𝐀 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 Since this is a short book, the story did feel rushed at times. There wasn't enough time to create depth, which often made me feel less connected to the characters and the overall story. When the perpetrator was revealed, it was a bit anticlimactic because of this lack of getting to know most characters.
𝐈𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 Overall, I truly enjoyed this book. While the story could feel a little rushed, the characters that we did get to know were interesing and the premise of the story was intruiging.
This was a pretty good book!!With some minor things that bothered me a bit which I’ll talk al about in just a sec, but first: In general it is a very entertaining book, it’s an interesting story you feel intrigued and want to know more. I would definitely recommend this book if you like… ummm idk how this is called but like kinda mystery thriller I guess (it isn’t like really scary, but.. ummm like a bit scary.. hahah 😅) I would call this book the little sister of: “A good girls guide to murder” btw I loved that book, and this one is her little sister a little shorter (like I mean it only has 170 pages!? ) it’s a bit sloppier, in MY opinion, just you know like the little sister (I don’t mean to offense anyone! I do love this book!) WoW, I think I’m over complicating things (if that is even a word hehe 😂)
Okay let’s move on from that. ⚠️ this can contain minor spoilers ⚠️ Sooo the reason why this book felt a little sloppier is because: the main girl is like solving a mystery (I guess, Idk 🤷🏼♀️😂) but she has some evidence and they like overlap, idk if you’re stil with me, but because of that evidence you should know something and she just ignores that and goes on. At the time it irritated me, but I was like umm I guess I was wrong or there’s a reason behind this but that wasn’t really the case, cause if you rad more till the end of the book when she “discovers that thing” it’s like a whole new thing idk if you get it, but it just made me feel like: Jep I knew the whole time and you could know.. but you didn’t.. and that makes me feel like if you didn’t see that why are you trying to solve this mystery.. like it’s kinda a frustrating situation, but non the less I enjoyed this book and I definitely recommend it!
Just like any thriller or mystery you know there are some trigger warnings: basically just that they talk about some sensitive stuff it’s not that graffic explained but you should just know that they tackle that kinda stuff in this book. ☺️ you can look it up if you really want to!
I hope this chaos of a review helped a bit! 😌😂
Ow wait one last thing!! Haha 😝 In the book they had like text messages and they looked like text messages in the book you know, and this is a very fun detail, BUT (why is there always a but 😂) on some pages the messages SPOIL stuffffff and that happens multiple times to meee once I literally had to cover it cause I accidentally read the first sentence… but that felt disappointing cause I just wanted to discover those things throughout the letters and not spoiled like this. If you get what I mean haha
I literally just added more chaos to this already chaotic review 😂🥰 yay
Anonymous confessions of a broken heart tells us the story of being the invisible girl and how hiding your identity and spilling secrets can go horribly wrong. Best friends to strangers, secrets exposed on social media, anonymous confessions that aren’t as innocent as they seem… this book has it all.
The language used is pretty inconstant. It can be striking, with sentences that are beautifully crafted — but these moments are contrasted by a more abrupt, simplified writing style that sometimes feels too blunt. There’s also a lot of “tell, don’t show”, which leads to the sudden appearance of some intense emotions out of nowhere (and then they disappear just as quickly). Because of this, I wasn’t as invested in the story and characters as I’d like to be.
A lot happens in the books but the plot moved kind of abruptly from one event to another without proper explanations or transitions. The story is just too short to fully immerse yourself in the characters’ experiences and actually connect to them on a deeper level.
This book is described as perfect for fans of A good girl’s guide to murder — and I get that.
Overall, I did enjoy this book and I think it’s really suitable and meaningful for a slightly younger audience.
3/5 ⭐️
[thanks to @hamleybooks for providing me an ARC. This hasn’t influenced my opinion in any way.]
Dit boek gaf me echt A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder-vibes en had zelfs iets weg van Pretty Little Liars.
I was recommended this book based on my like for the 'A Good Girls Guide to Murder' series, saying that it was like a lower-stakes version of that. On that premise, it delivered. It had the modern epistolary format of classic novel mixed in with texts and Instagram posts and comments.
The mystery: the mystery was okay. It took a good while to get me properly invested, and the conclusion felt very eh. Maybe that's because I am used to more exciting/twisty endings, and this one was just very straightforward? Which is not too bad, I just set my expectations too high.
The characters: now here is where my biggest struggle lies. Our main character is the stereotypical nerdy quiet girl type but its emphasized SO HARD that it comes across as almost a caricature, and especially in the beginning she just comes across as very pretentious? It did get better as the novel moved on, and there were more interactions and less inner thoughts. Generally, the characters didnt feel that well-developed, but I think that's got to so with the length of the novel, there simply wasnt enough time or space for more development. That's sad, but i am not sure how you'd fix that without messing up the pacing otherwise.
I didnt hate it, didnt love it either. It was an okay book, and I am going to assume that for a younger audience (as it is intended for) it will do way better!
Review: I really liked the book, normally it’s not the kind of book I normally read. But this was a nice short read. I really liked the characters and the way she wrote the book! Actually I loved it 🥰 There was just a little thing that annoyed me sometimes.. I’m not a teen and just the big teen drama, high school drama wasn’t really my thing. But besides that, 👌🏼
When reading the book I felt like living in the word of Gossip Girl.. with the teenage drama and her social media account. Thr book made me rewatch the show tho 🤭. The book is about Holly, she doesn’t have a lot of friends and her best friend moved so she has a hard time being social at school. But when she starts a new social media account everything explodes and she feels important. But is she the right person for it? Does she know what she’s doing with that account? Holly is such a mood person! Like I felt her, when she was sad, I felt that. When happy, yes girl, I felt that!
The book was overall good, a little messy en chaotic and dramatic!
Here I go... the review of my first ARC! Thanks again @hamleybooks 😘 hopefully more in the future! 🤗 . I will start about the story itself. You can read the synopsis on the post. It gave me vibes of a modern "Gossip Girl" mixed with some "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder"! Both which I like! The story was good and brought a lot of suspense, but I could also predict the ending a bit... Luckily, it was a good page-turner and I couldn't put it down! 🧐 . The characters were nice as well, but not per se very deep. I could identify with the main character, Holly, because I'm a book lover as well, but sometimes she even was, let's say annoying?! Holly is an extreme overthinker! The side characters, such as Mona and Johannes, were nice, but also not indepth enough for my taste! 🙈 . Lastly, I really liked that the author is a Dutch speaking woman who has the guts to bring out a YA book in English, kudos to her! @stefanies_yawriter 👏 . All in all, this book is a 3,5 star read for me! Enjoyable, but could use some more depth. ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟
I would never normally choose a young adult book but Anonymous Confessions of a Broken Heart has absolutely convinced me to take this genre more seriously!
I read this cover to cover in 24 hours, the story totally gripped me and I was so gripped by all the twists and turns. I was also constantly changing my mind about who I could and couldn’t trust - if you like a book that keeps you on your toes then this is definitely for you!
I also loved the development of the characters and it really did take me a back to being a teenager, and what matters the most in your world at that time in your life. It was nostalgic to read and made me genuinely thoughtful about a time in my life I haven’t thought about for a long time.
Overall if you like a thrilling story, don’t overlook this due to the young adult audience, there are some real lessons in here about our relationships and the more important one of all, our relationship with ourselves. I’d recommend this to anybody - young and old alike!
Holly is the invisible girl at school, but secretly runs an Instagram account called "Anonymously Yours", where classmates can anonymously share their deepest secrets. When she receives a shocking and traumatic confession, she begins a dangerous search for the truth: one that forces her te reveal her identity, puts relationship to the test and challenges her resilience
I met Stefanie at the Autumn YA-Festival and as a true crime fan, this book immediately caught my attention. The thriller storyline combined with the mysterious Instagram messages Holly receives, creates constant tension and turns this book into a real page-turner that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The use of text messages and Instagram posts throughout the story made the book feel modern, dynamic and very realistic. The suspense is well maintained and the writing style is easy to follow, making this a very binge-worthy read. Younger reader, in particular will relate to the characters and the high school setting.
A quick easy read, high school drama meets detective sleuthing.
The writing style is quite poetic and descriptive, much more so than you usually find in a book of this genre which some readers may find jarring.
The characters are fun and well formed in a teenage way, the premise is a great and definitely could have been expanded further into a longer book.
Personal choice but I would have rated higher had it been less descriptive and flowery language and more twisty and thriller vibes. However I did find the idea of the storyline really intriguing.
Anonymously Yours is a sharp, emotionally charged YA novel that dives into the messy intersection of secrets, identity, and digital influence. The protagonist’s double life is compelling, vulnerable, and deeply relatable. Every chapter pulls you closer to the unraveling of truth and the cost of being heard. It's equal parts suspenseful and heartfelt, with a voice that feels authentically teen. A must-read for anyone who’s ever felt invisible—and wanted to be seen.
The book does an incredible job of exploring trust, betrayal, and the complexity of high school relationships, all while keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Holly’s internal struggle is relatable and raw, as she must decide whether to protect herself and stay silent or risk it all to uncover the truth. The pacing is perfect, with just the right balance of suspense and character development.
Highschool drama isn't usually my thing, but this cover just intrigued me for no reason, so I gave it a shot. Is the genre fully for me: no, but this was actually a very entertaining read. The premise with an account that shares secrets is great, and well used. I like Holly and Johannes (Dutch representation!!!), and the themes that were adressed were adressed really well. At times the description felt a bit too deep and analysing for a teenager, but it also made it nice to read through.
A few weeks ago, I received an ARC copy of Anonymous Confessions of a Broken Heart by Stefanie Sybens, thanks to Hamley Books! I only knew it was a thriller, and judging by the cover, I expected something with social media.
But wow, this book surprised me! 🤯 I had no idea what to expect, but I flew through it, eager to find out how the story would end.
We follow Holly, a girl who feels invisible at school but secretly runs the Instagram account Anonymously Yours. She collects and anonymously shares her classmates' deepest secrets. But when one confession completely shakes her world, she is determined to uncover the truth. The only problem? She must do so while keeping her own identity hidden… 👀
While reading, I kept thinking: this book has the vibe of Gossip Girl meets A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder! 🎭🔍 If you love those kinds of stories, this one is a must-read! I gave it a solid 3.5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fun but not really more. The relationships and everything just happened way too quickly. The mystery was clear from the start and at one point I briefly wondered how it was possible that Holly hadn't yet understood what was going on. But I still had a good time and it was a quick read.
I love me a short book, but this was too short imo. It has a half-thriller story and a half-romance story because none of them really make take their time to truly develop. I do however truly believe this would have made for a great story if it was 100 pages longee
