Vaieon by V. Casa is one of those books that instantly taps into a childhood daydream—the idea of waking up one morning and finding yourself transported far, far back in time. That’s exactly what happens to Lily, the protagonist, when she is pulled from her ordinary life and awakens in the Cretaceous Era. And yes, there are DINOSAURS!
What struck me most was how immersive the setting felt. The world is detailed, dangerous, and alive, and the dinosaurs aren’t just background scenery. They play a real role in the story, sometimes terrifying, sometimes surprisingly complex, which gave me that wide-eyed sense of wonder.
At its heart, though, Vaieon is also deeply character-driven. Lily is not an action hero dropped into a prehistoric playground; she’s a woman grappling with displacement, survival, and what it means to lose the life she knew. There’s fear, determination, grief, and awe woven into her perspective. The slower, introspective passages balance the suspense of survival with an emotional weight that makes her journey feel real.
This is a book for readers who, at some point in their lives, dreamed of stepping outside their door and discovering they’d stumbled into another era: whether you wished for Narnia, Middle-earth, or a world where you’d come face-to-face with dinosaurs.
I’d recommend Vaieon to fans of survival stories, speculative time travel, and anyone looking for something that blends adventure with reflection. It’s the first in a trilogy, and I’m curious to see where Lily’s journey through time will lead next.
