Souls Reunited Series #1

The Essence of Fate

Rate this book
I should have never challenged the man behind the wheel of that jet-black Ferrari.

Brooding and devastatingly handsome, Ian McAlistair seemed to have the upper hand from the moment our eyes met. Then, with his touch, he lit a flame I knew would only burn me in the end.

I wanted to forget our scandalous encounter-to forget that kiss, but it became a drug I craved. Like any addiction, it would weaken me, and that weakness would open the wounds from my past. None of that mattered because lan McAlistair gets what he wants.

He tore down the walls I'd carefully crafted around myself. And I needed that protection, it kept me whole... or so I thought. In his arms, I found pleasure like I'd never known, and in that pleasure, I found the strength to let go of the pain.

Until the flame was extinguished by betrayal. Now, I'm left with the ashes from the fire I so desperately feared.

It is said if you love someone, you should set them free.

But I would soon learn that Fate strongly disagrees.

When two souls are bound for eternity, nothing will keep them apart.

Charlotte and Ian's story is a contemporary romance steeped in the undeniable connection of soul mates.

When two souls have loved that deeply before, they will find each other again...and again and again.

This is a standalone novel in the Souls Reunited Series that features an endearing cast of characters that make you appreciate the bond that can be shared with family and close friends.

I think I've always been a hopeless romantic. My favorite movies and books all revolve around a love story. The deeper the connection, the better, and I admit to being somewhat partial to anything that takes me back in time.
Saying, "Yes!" to the love of my life, in front of a huge crowd, all those years ago, was the best decision I've ever made. I love being that amazing man's wife and the mother of two (really cool) young adults. The three of them are my world. Not only are they my family, they are my best friends.
I am also a crazy cat lady because I'm weak when it comes to kittens that need love. I am what's known as a "foster fail" and my loving husband and children have forbidden me from fostering any time in the foreseeable future.
I am an artist with an overflow of ideas I want to create. Drawing, painting, making jewelry, designing interior decor accessories, refinishing furniture, decorating and, of course, writing. It is impossible for me to be bored.
Spending time in nature rejuvenates my soul and am slightly obsessed with combing the shoreline to collect things that washed in from the sea...which is clearly evident by the massive amounts of driftwood, seashells, and other whatnots I am hoarding.
Although I am a classic introvert that needs that quiet, contemplative alone time to reboot everything that I am, I love spending time with close friends and family, laughing until my face hurts, and just getting a little crazy every now and again.

A great debut novel by author Alison E. Steuart. The past may stop Charlotte from even trying to see what there is between her and Ian. However, the past may be exactly why these two are meant to be together. Ian's propensity to strong arm (while being completely charming) and Charlotte's propensity to let her Gemini twin take over, makes for amazing sparks both in and out of the bedroom (if they ever get there that is). Learning to let go of the past is a huge part of the storyline and it is not easily come by. Do you believe in love at first sight? Do you believe that great loves are destined to find each other, over and over? Steamy, sweet, funny, painful and engaging!

Ian McAlistair and Charlotte LeFay meet during an episode of road rage. While the meeting is anything but ordinary, it’s definitely humiliating for Charlotte.

Ian’s humiliation of Charlotte makes it that much harder for him to win her over once he finds out who she is and where she works.

The story line definitely pulled me in, and I had high expectations for their great love affair. I was left wanting when the story took a turn towards FSOG BDSM. The characters themselves are wonderful, and I didn’t have any problem with Ian having control issues or Charlotte having issues stemming from her parents relationship.

The redeeming factor for me in this story is the eternal love from centuries past and the glimpses into that shared love.... a sense of soulmates reuniting. And the ending, touched my heart with the hope that the two meet again in another life or the afterlife

The Essence of Fate is about Ian and Charlotte who are soul mates. They had an instant connection with a few obstacles. I found the cover very eye-catching. It’s a good looking cover design which should draw readers in. This is my first read by Alison E Steuart. Apparently this is Alison’s debut book. What I discovered from reading this book is that Alison’s writing voice doesn’t draw me in. I typically shy away from new authors for this very reason. I have certain expectations when it comes to selecting a book and writing style is my driving force. I prefer dialogue driven story’s with unique storylines. Sadly, this book didn’t scream “you must read”. Her writing style and voice didn’t speak to me on a level that grabbed my attention.
I did finish this book by skimming through it. After all, I had to find out how Charlotte conquered her trust fears. My favorite aspect about reading is discovering new ways for how an author resolves issues. I was disappointed with Charlotte’s character. It was a shoddy excuse having Charlotte carry the weight of her fathers mistakes.
Charlotte LeFay had an alter ego named Sibel. She emerged during times of distress. These scenes were meant for humor, but I found her inner monster irrational and reactive. Sibel needs to be put on a leash. Nana was another character meant for humor, but I found her inappropriate trash talk cringe worthy.
I couldn’t connect with these characters or the storyline. Charlotte’s character is twenty-eight which is an ideal age for my reading preference. However, her dialogue with Erika has me questioning her age. The banter between them reads more like high schoolers than grown adults. Charlotte doesn’t come across as polished or professional. Ian’s character came across as pathetic and desperate. I had higher expectations from Ian’s character. I hadn’t anticipated his irrational bouts of drama. I thought he would be a level-headed business man playing it cool. Instead he’s impatient and jealous acting like a young teenage girl.

I wasn’t prepared for the graphic sex scenes. I had hoped for a more emotional journey. That’s the problem with preconceived ideas what I envision and what the author delivers are two different things. Sadly, I skimmed through the sex scenes.

I am a sucker for a great love story and this debut novel by Alison E. Steuart did not disappoint. Stories about soul mates is my jam and this story made me swoon. I absolutely could not put this down and was wrapped up in the love story that was Charlotte and Ian.

Charlotte is an independent woman who knows exactly what she wants in life. Fully content with the way things are until one day she and her alter ego Sybil decided to engage in road rage and meet the oh so sexy Ian. Once these two come together their connection is something of fate, one they have lived many times over.

Alison E. Steuart has captured my heart with this amazing story of love and forgiveness. It makes you long for a love that can span time and space and last forever.

Alison E Steuart does a great job with this debut novel. Ian and Charlotte start things off with a BANG of a road rage incident, and the sparks are intense! We're taken on quite the journey of them discovery more about themselves, and each other, as they try to fight, and then learn more about their connection. Extreme highs and lows make for an entertaining read, and there are fabulous leads to the rest of the series, which were done quite well.

Overall a fun and entertaining read...

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (2.5 Rounded Up) — An Essence of Fate by Alison Steuart

First off, thank you so much to the author for the ARC! For a debut novel, this was a solid read.

This story hits the ground running…maybe too fast for my personal taste. There’s an orgasm in the first chapter (yep, chapter one), and while that will absolutely work for some readers, I tend to prefer a slower burn. I like time for mental chemistry, banter, and emotional buildup before the couple is utterly obsessed with each other. Intrigued? Sure. Attracted? Absolutely. But this was straight-up obsession from the get go.

That said, I recognize that’s a me thing. Honestly, twenty-year-old me would’ve eaten this up, which is why I’d probably recommend this most to a new adult (18–22) audience. The tone and dialogue really fit that age range.

As the story progresses, I did understand why their connection felt so intense from the start. Ian and Charlotte are soulmates, their love is fierce, protective, spicy, and transcends lifetimes. Once that clicked, their instant connection made a lot more sense.

Charlotte, however, wasn’t the easiest FMC to like. She read a bit younger than her stated age, and for someone described as career driven, her actions didn’t always reflect professionalism. Her alter ego, Sibel, was meant to be funny, but I found her more obnoxiously reactive than humorous. The same goes for Nana, while her crass humor was clearly intentional, it leaned a bit too far into cringe for me.

The pacing kept me interested, and I never found myself bored, but personally I wish there had been more dialogue to balance out the backstory and internal narration heavy narration.

All in all, this was a passionate, fast-paced book with reincarnated soulmates, heavy spice, and a love that literally spans lifetimes. It wasn’t fully my style, but I can see this hitting perfectly for younger readers who love intense, fated romance.

Charlotte and Ian's relationship was very intense. It was fast, furious, and all consuming. That's not a bad thing, but to me, Ian was very Alpha and was more controlling than was mentioned. He had some very sweet sides to him, but I thought he bounced a lot between controlling and jealous. Charlotte definitely had deep issues, but they both had jealousy issues. I wasn't sure what to think when Sibel came out. I was also kinda confused about the premonitions, but it added some intrigue to the story. I loved Jackson. He was the calm that they needed. Nana and Erika were two characters that made me laugh, but also provided wisdom.

In The Essence of Fate, we meet Ian McAlistair and Charlotte LeFay in a combustive road-rage incident—hardly a meet-cute, and certainly one that leaves Charlotte embarrassed and defensive. As Ian (of course devastatingly handsome and alpha in every way) pursues her, he gradually tears down her emotional walls. But their connection isn’t just modern-day heat: the book weaves in the idea of soulmates reuniting across time, past lives, and eternal love.

What I Liked

Strong chemistry & tension

Ian’s domineering charm and Charlotte’s guarded vulnerability make for some sizzling scenes. Their friction feels real: she’s wary from past hurts, and he pushes just hard enough to make things interesting.

The eternal love thread

The flashbacks and hints at a love that transcends lifetimes added an emotional dimension I appreciated. It’s the part that truly “redeems” the story for me: the hope that their souls are bound beyond one lifetime kept me invested.

Relatable emotional wounds

Charlotte’s fear rooted in her parent’s troubled relationship, and Ian’s control issues, give the characters interior obstacles to overcome (and sometimes stumble over). I liked that both had to grow and heal, not just give in to attraction.

What Didn’t Work for Me

Sudden shift toward BDSM (Fifty Shades–style)

The romance starts more emotionally, then pivots into more explicit BDSM territory. That turn felt jarring and didn’t fully mesh with the tone of the first half. I found myself wishing the balance had stayed closer to emotional intimacy rather than pushing into power play. (Yes, I like heat—but I want it to feel earned.)

Underdeveloped secondary arcs

The novel sets up juicy tension (family secrets, past wounds, public humiliation), but some of those threads don’t get the payoff I hoped for. I wanted deeper resolutions for Charlotte’s backstory and more consistency in Ian’s internal conflicts.

Predictability in key scenes

While the soulmate theme is sweet, certain plot beats felt familiar (betrayal, separation, coming back). I guessed a few turns ahead of time.

Writing Style & Voice

Alison E. Steuart’s prose is clear, emotionally direct, and often evocative. Her descriptions of longing, heartache, and desire land well. Where she stumbles is in pacing: some scenes drag, others rush (especially when the BDSM element kicks in). Dialogue is earnest and often effective, though occasionally melodramatic (as romance dialogue sometimes is). I enjoyed her ability to make Charlotte’s pain and yearning palpable.

Verdict

The Essence of Fate is a spicy romance with an appealing eternal-love twist, but it doesn’t always balance its elements gracefully. The pivot into more explicit power dynamics felt abrupt, and some plot threads weren’t fully explored. But the characters and their emotional core still carry the book through. It’s a worthy read—especially if you like steamy alpha heroes and soulmate themes—but not one I’d call flawless.

✨ENGLISH & ITALIAN REVIEW✨

🇬🇧

❓Have you ever kept your feelings so tightly locked away that it put your happiness at risk?

This is the story of Charlotte and Ian, two people who are more mature than their age and aren't sure how to manage their feelings, at least the more romantic ones.
Charlotte doesn't allow herself to love, keeping her heart closed and safe behind an insurmountable wall, because of her parents. Those who should have been an example to her were the ones who had the most negative impact on her love life.
While Ian is accustomed to his success with women, no one can resist him... but they are all fleeting, momentary, and empty relationships. He didn't think true love could exist for him too, and this has led him to not know how to handle this newness.

So, even though they are both attracted to each other, neither really knows how to behave, which leads to difficult situations and misunderstandings. But there is a very powerful thread that unites them, even in a slightly unusual way, but one that is deeply rooted within them. Will it be enough to get them back on track and give them a happy ending?

A romance that tells us about realities close to home, ones many could relate to, and does so in the most appropriate way. But along with the more realistic facts, we also find a touch of magic, folklore, and symbolism that makes everything more special and, why not, even mysterious.
The only thing that made me turn up my nose a little was that, at times, the narrative was wordy and slowed down the pace of the story a bit. Overall, however, it doesn't ruin the overall effect, and I really appreciated the journey the characters took!

🇮🇹

Spice? 10/10. Realism? Ma’am, where?

2.75 ⭐️ | 4.25 🌶️

The Essence of Fate comes in hot: like smoking-tire, jet-black-Ferrari hot, and Alison E. Steuart definitely knows how to hook a reader with a sultry premise and smooth, addictive prose. The blurb alone promises brooding alpha-male energy, emotional scars, forbidden attraction, and two souls tied by something bigger than either of them… and honestly, it delivers on those vibes. The writing flows easily, the tension sparks early, and the overall arc has that sweeping, fate-touched allure that romance lovers often crave.

But here’s the thing: while I usually adore alpha-male romances, this one felt too over-the-top for me, like the fantasy was pushed so far it snapped the believability right in half. The chemistry is undeniably scorching, but the intensity between the leads escalates at lightning speed. We’re talking instant obsession, instant declarations, instant everything. The kind of fast burn that doesn’t just melt the pages, it melts LOGIC 👀.

Despite the potential, I struggled to connect with the characters because the relationship foundation never quite solidified; it leaned heavily on spice while the emotional development lagged behind. And yes, the spice is abundant (deliciously so) but without a deeper backbone to support the romance, I couldn’t fully sink into the story or picture myself in it.

Still, there’s real talent here. Steuart’s voice is engaging, her confidence on the page is clear, and her story concept is absolutely enticing. With a bit more grounding, more buildup, more tension, more heart, I could easily see her becoming a go-to name in the genre.

Thank you to Grey’s Promotions for the e-ARC, and wishing Alison E. Steuart all the best on her release day (November 18th)!

The Essence of Fate (Souls Reunited Book 1) is a spicy billionaire alpha romance with a twist of fate. I would like to thank Alison E. Steuart and NetGalley for the opportunity to arc read this amazing story.

This fantasy novel had me hooked from the start, I had issues with putting it down and stop reading (which didn't really happen that much). The love story within this book had me captured, while reading I could just image what was happening.

The story line was well written, with the spicy, billionaire, alpha romance, and characters. You fell in love with the characters from get go, it was hard not to.

This book was a fun, easy, hooking, gripping novel that you don't want to miss the chance at reading. I know that sometimes I'll write about what happens in the book, but I feel that if I do this it will ruin it for other readers. It's one of those you need to jump in blinded, get hooked yourself and wish that you were inside the book.

Did this book kill me in the end? I don't really admit this in forums/social medias, but this book made me cry (and I mean ugly cry) with Charlotte and Ian's ending.

Would I recommend this book to anyone? Well that is a easy yes especially if you are wanting a good, easy, beautiful and spicy read. It's not a hard read, and you'll be as hooked with it as I was. Would I read this book again? Well that is one easy "HELL YES" from me, I would read it more than once I bet you.

Thank you again for giving me the chance to read this book, and I know that at some point in 2026 I will make sure I get special editions for trophy copies on my bookshelf (which I will end up reading, thinking I've never read it before) just to be hooked once again!

Huge thank you to grey’s promo and the author for the gifted e-copy of the book in exchange for my honest and spoiler free review. I’m giving this book a solid 3.5 star rating!

This is my first book that I’ve read by Alison E. Steuart and I wasn’t disappointed. I really liked our how main characters, Ian & Charlotte met during a case of road rage. Normally road rage doesn’t end with people catching feelings but in this book, it did! These two also are star crossed lovers or in better terms, soulmates that have loved each other in the past so it was neat to see how this author incorporated both the present with visions of the past times as well. While their connection was instant in the present, we at least got to see that the love these two have for each other ran deep and was apparent in their past lives. A love that follows you for centuries is something a lot of us dream of so I felt like this love story was a nice, refreshing read for me. I felt like this book was a decent start to the souls reunited series and I am a bit curious to see how it develops and continues to grow in future books to come. Being able to find your soulmate in each lifetime is probably the most magical feeling so seeing a bit of this magic in this story was enough to make it a pleasant read for me!

I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

The Essence of Fate was an overall enjoyable read with a mix of strong moments and a few slower parts. What stood out to me the most was the undeniable chemistry between the main characters. It felt natural and intense, making their connection easy to root for.

However, the lack of communication and the characters’ insecurities often took center stage for too long, which at times made the story feel like it was looping around the same emotional struggles. I found myself wishing they’d move past those hurdles a bit sooner so the plot could flow more smoothly.

That said, I really liked how things came together in the end. The conclusion felt satisfying, and I appreciated the subtle hint toward the second book.

The Essence of Fate is a heartfelt story with beautiful chemistry and emotional depth, albeit one that occasionally lingers a bit too long on the characters’ doubts. A good start to what could become an even stronger series.

The story starts with a wild and funny meet-cute during a road rage incident in a parking lot. Charlotte, the FMC, has an alter ego named Sybil who appears when she’s angry — a quirky and entertaining twist that adds some humor to the story.

Ian, the MMC, is rich and intense, while Charlotte is strong-willed and fiery. Their dynamic definitely has sparks, though the romance felt a bit too insta-love for me — or maybe more like instant obsession on Ian’s part. The first kiss scene stretched believability, and some of the emotional reactions (like her response to his drawing of her) felt a bit over the top.

Charlotte’s trust issues, stemming from her complicated relationship with her father, drive most of the conflict. While that setup had potential, I found myself wanting a bit more depth and development in their relationship.

Overall, this book just wasn’t quite my cup of tea, but I can see how readers who enjoy intense, whirlwind romances might have fun with it.

Thank you to Alison Steuart & Grey’s Promotions for the e-book in exchange for my honest review.

It is said if you love someone, you should set them free. But I would soon learn that Fate strongly disagrees.

The Essence of Fate is a captivating paranormal romance that dives deep into the mystical bond of past-life lovers and the irresistible pull of Fated Mates. From the very first chapter, I was swept away by the electric chemistry between Charlotte Lefay and Ian McAlistair. Their connection is immediate, intense, and utterly magnetic—setting the tone for a story that’s as passionate as it is soul-stirring.

The pacing is bold and unpredictable, with a hectic start and finish that mirrors the emotional whirlwind the characters endure. Healing, trials, and tribulations are at the heart of this journey, making it unlike any romance I’ve read before. It’s not just about love—it’s about transformation, surrender, and the merging of souls.

Charlotte’s resistance to Ian’s overwhelming love adds tension and realism to their story. Ian, a billionaire with a powerful presence, falls hard and fast, while Charlotte fights against the inevitable. Their love story unfolds with glimpses into past lives, visions that blur time, and a spiritual depth that kept me engaged from beginning to end.

Book 1 in the Souls Reunited series: Ian and Charlotte. This is a instant connection/ insta-love, he falls hard, push-pull, dual POV, soul mates/fated loves, tragic past and healing, “enemies” to lovers, strong independent FMC, reformed playboy MMC, slow burn billionaire romance.
This starts off as a road rage encounter turned both of their lives upside down when they locked eyes. Charlotte is super reluctant in giving Ian and chance because of her past and her fears of “history repeating itself” and she’d be left heartbroken. What they both can’t deny is the otherworldly pull they have to eachother, that seems so much more than the average connection.
I will say that I found the dialogue to be stiff. Not how that age demographic would speak and communicate. It wasn’t bad in any way, but at times could be distracting because I didn’t feel like it always flowed well.
All that being said, I definitely recommend this book. I really enjoyed this read and their story and I’m definitely going to continue this series!!

Charlotte meets Ian during an interaction on the road. The dynamic ignites as soon as they interact, but Charlotte's trust issues block her from pursuing anything with a prestigious man, like Ian. Will he be able to conquer her heart with his perseverance?

The romantic story between them starts off too fast for my personal taste, but as I got towards the end of the novel, I understood why their connection and obsession for each other was so strong from the get-go. Their love is strong, powerful and goes beyond this one lifetime. Even if they get together at around 50% into the story, the other part is focused on their individual growth, which I truly enjoyed.

The ending was dreamy and the epilogue made my eyes teary because everyone wishes to find a love like theirs.

tropes:
-reincarnated soulmates
-he falls first and harder
-fast-paced book

Thank you so much to the author and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of the book! My review is voluntary and honest.

🌸EBOOK REVIEW🌸

“When Charlotte and I come together, it’s like my soul is home, back where it’s longed to be since well before it possessed my body.“

“I will find you, my love… my soul will find you… again.”

This starts out as a classic billionaire contemporary read and then we realize something so much deeper and profound is happening. A beautiful story of fated mates finding each other through centuries. We get little snippets and flashbacks of their past lives and that has me soooo excited to continue the series. Starting book 2, The Power of Fate immediately.

There is GORGEOUS artwork in the ebook and physical edition that you NEED TO SEE!

Also I cried at the ending … I. Never. Cry. So well done.

⭐ 4/5 ⭐

The story may have started with road rage, but it ended with a wonderful fairytale dream (a spicy one, that is). Charlotte’s trust issues are personally relatable, and I validated her feelings so much to a point that I see myself in her. Their battle for each other’s attention was so good, and I love how they concluded everything. The ending is good, and I wish nothing but the best for Charlotte and Ian. While not the main characters, Jackson and Erika are my absolute favorite characters. Supportive best friends are so fun to have around, and they absolutely helped so much with the plot development.

The story had a lot of potential but everytime I was reading Ian perspetive he was too focused on Charlotte's body and how much he wanted to fuck her, for me that's a huge no.
Also, him saying he was in love in like a few days, it's not believable at all.
Charlotte is a very traumatized person and I feel like Ian's controlling personality is not a good match.
I really liked Jackson, he's a sweetheart.

*repub ARC review* Well….I finished it. It was fairly easy to get thru and the spicy scenes were entertaining. BUT, this fell a little short. There was an underlying magical realism piece that I WISH was explored throughout the story cuz it would’ve added much more depth to the plot. Both characters spoke so formally ALL the time (even when making jokes w/ their friends) that it felt a little forced… not relatable or believable at all. Their inner monologues were dramatic & repetitive so it just got redundant.

The Essence of Fate is an intense, fast-paced story about soulmates whose love spans lifetimes. Ian and Charlotte’s connection is fierce, protective, and consuming, with flashbacks to past lives adding depth and intrigue.

The pacing kept me engaged, though I wished for more dialogue to balance the heavier narration. Ian’s Alpha tendencies and Charlotte’s jealousy created tension, but their bond still felt magnetic and fated.

Overall, this is a passionate read filled with spice, angst, and the pull of mated fates.

Dream enticing love that will enthrall you

You are killing me.. My tears won't stop running down my face from the ending.. Ian and Charlotte have such an amazing connection from the start that had me laughing, crying and ready to throw things I was so mad which to me means it's one hell of an amazing story. I can't wait to see how it all began in book 2 of the series. Please tell me you will be writing more? You're amazing!!
