Six legions. Two immortals. One secret that could kill them both.
Centuries ago, the immortal world shattered. The Queen was murdered, the royal bloodline lost, and the six ruling legions have been slowly crumbling ever since. Without the Queen, their magic corrupts—and their people with it.
Jade has spent her life fighting for control—of herself, her business, and the world around her. When the ruthless CEO who engineered her downfall is revealed to be an immortal from a rival legion—and her fated mate—everything she built threatens to come undone.
Niko has one slay the First Legion’s leader and avenge the past. Destroying Julian’s corporate interests should have been simple—until he discovers his sworn enemy’s fiercest defender is also the woman fate marked as his. Torn between duty and desire, Niko must decide whether his thirst for revenge is stronger than the soul-deep bond he was born to claim.
Bound by passion but divided by loyalty, Jade and Niko are enemies by birth ... and something far more dangerous by fate.
Author's Note
Shattered is a dual perspective paranormal romance with urban fantasy elements. As part of the Lost Sovereign series, it can be read as a standalone, but we recommend that they be read in order. While the romance within is steamy, this series is fade to black/closed door.
Anna Hawke is a paranormal romance novelist dedicated to bringing to life the voices inside her head. With a degree in Journalism and a vested interest in grammatical perfection, Anna’s written works contain sarcasm, spark, and sexy alpha males too handsome for their own good.
When she isn’t busy wrangling her three young children, gorgeous husband, and an opinionated grey tabby, Anna enjoys reading romance novels, riding horses, and traveling to places where hiking boots are required. Writing, however, is her favorite pastime, and Anna loves nothing more than pouring herself a 24 oz mug of tea, wrapping herself in a blanket, and giving her imaginary friends a voice.
A fun mix of business mergers and shifters within an urban dystopian society! I LOVED how strong and determined the FMC is and how loyal and protective she is to everyone who is important to her. The MMC comes in grumpy and bossy, but can't help discovering all the protective feels for her. This is a wild read filled with business and territory intrigue, hidden identities, betrayal, and love. The found family she builds in this book is really special and the tension and forbidden love hits with perfection. I devoured this book and can't wait to read the next one!!
❤️🔥 Tensionnnnnn ❤️🔥 Enemies to lovers ❤️🔥 Rivals ❤️🔥 Caretaking ❤️🔥 Banter that had my screaming and kicking my feet ❤️🔥 Shifters ❤️🔥 Found Family ❤️🔥 Betrayal ❤️🔥 Sweet Moments ❤️🔥 Angsty Moments ❤️🔥 Forbidden Love
First before I say anything else I want to say this book exceeded my expectations, and was good. Now I am super picky when it comes to shifter books. Especially with mate bonds. I have been let down by so many of them. Generally unless they have other paranormal beings I avoid them. Now, this being said this author has another series I adored, so naturally when she announced a new series I was all in. Even if it was shifters. I can say she definitely didnt let me down. The book had me hooked from the beginning. The story is complex, and so is the magic system. Which is so appreciated. There wasnt the bing, bang, boom and your my mate nonsense. No, trust me. There is A LOT going on, and it’s got layers upon layers. This is an adult romance, but it is not spicy. It has the slow burn, and the tension but it safe for younger readers if need be. I really like the characters, and I am eager to see where the next book goes if Im honest. I feel like we are just starting to see the deeper story thats going to span within the series, and I am so intrigued. Seriously who doesn’t love a plot within a book, on top of a plot that spans across a series too? Plus new MCs in each book? Yes please!
This Paranormal Romance is book 1 in The Lost Sovereign series. The romance in this book is a slow burn, with mate bonds. The book is an adult romance, but remains unspicy. Niko is taking over Jades company. It was supposed to be a quick task, until he actually meets Jade. She is beautiful, loyal, and smart. Everything fate would deem perfect, and she also belongs to his sworn enemy. Nikos secrets tell a truth if she would dare to take a risk, and believe. This is an extraordinary enjoyable book 1 in a new series.
ARC review of: Shattered by Anna Hawke Book one in the Lost Sovereign series.
The book is an urban fantasy romance, which is just my vibe. Therefore I was excited to read and review this book and it did not disappoint.
The main characters are Jade and Niko and you get to follow the story from both their POVs. Their people, the Sagani, are suffering the consequences of their race's history. Jade and Niko belong to opposing sides in a fight for power and survival. Despite this, they fall for one another, which obviously complicated things for them.
The story takes place in our regular world where humans are unaware of the existence of the Sagani. The magic system is well thought through and diverse. As a reader you get introduced to quite a few characters early on, but most are fleshed out in a way that doesn't make it confusing. The world building is good and the plot is well paced and makes you want to keep reading.
I recommend this to readers who like urban fantasy, tension filled romance and forbidden love.
Thanks to the author for the ARC. I will definitely read book two.
Just finished Shattered by Anna Hawke and... my heart? Still recovering. 🩶
If you love enemies-to-lovers, forbidden romance, fated mates, slow burn tension, and characters who carry emotional scars like armor... this one shatters you in the best way.😍
I absolutely loved this book! Life got in the way so what was really only 3 reading days actually took a couple of weeks, but I genuinely did not want to put this book down.
Niko and Jade were great characters. They were believable and enjoyable. I liked that you totally knew what was truly going on with Jade even if the main characters hadn’t realized it.
I’ve read different books by Hawke and this one was SOO much better than anything she’s written before. Completely fantastic.
I’m minorly disappointed that book 2 won’t be from Jade/Niko’s POV, but the series set up is great so I’ll definitely be giving it a chance.
100% recommend for lovers of fated mates, urban fantasy, workplace romance, and a form of shifters (minor).
Good introduction to a new series. it has to be the best enemies to lovers that I have read. Very much Romeo and Juliet in the way the romance happens. Also the conflict in the couple was good, both of them were right in their own way. Another good point is that I feel this has a better structured world than her previous series, but we'll see how it goes.
What happens when a 400-year-old supernatural CEO faces a corporate takeover—led by the one man destined to be her mate?
In Shattered, Anna Hawke introduces readers to a human world where the immortal realm is fractured, and shifter magic is slowly corrupting its people. The Queen’s assassination centuries ago left the six ruling legions in disarray, setting the stage for a gripping tale of power, betrayal, and destiny.
Jade Lascaux has spent two decades building her investment firm into a corporate giant—but when mysterious businessman Nikolas Church orchestrates a hostile takeover, her carefully constructed human facade begins to crack.
As a reader who loves dual perspectives and mature romantasy, Shattered hit several sweet spots. I thoroughly enjoyed that the protagonists were competent, emotionally grounded adults—not impulsive college characters who fall in lust before they finish a sentence.
The banter between Niko and Jade was sharp and modern, with real-world sass and pop culture references that made me chuckle. Beneath the humour was a slow-burn romance that kept me turning pages, eager to see how their dynamic would evolve.
And I truly appreciated the fresh take on shifter magic—complex, psychological, and layered—rather than the usual alpha-male dick swinging tropes that comes with shifters.
That said, I’m not quite sure what happened in the final chapters. Whether it was my rush to get to the climax or a shift in the writing style (I'd asked myself if a different author took over) because the ending felt rushed.
Despite that, Shattered succeeds in delivering mature characters, engaging dialogue, fascinating shifter dynamics, and a satisfying slow-burn urban romance that leaves me with enough questions to absolutely pick up Book 2.
If you're a reader who enjoys urban romance with centuries-old protagonists who have real-life experience and emotional depth, this one’s worth your TBR pile.
NB: I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Enemies-to-lovers? Check. Fated mates? Check. A crumbling magical world on the brink of destruction? Oh, you know we’re diving in.
This book throws you headfirst into a world ruled by six immortal legions where power is magic and corruption is creeping in like a slow poison. The Queen’s been dead for centuries, the throne is empty, and everyone’s hanging by a very frayed, very cursed thread.
Enter Jade: fierce, independent, and in full control of her empire… until fate decides to stir the pot. Her world flips when her ultimate corporate rival turns out to be part of the immortal world—and worse—her fated mate. Cue the tension, the betrayal, the sizzling glances that say “I hate you but also maybe want to kiss you.” 😮💨
Now toss in Niko, a revenge-driven immortal with a kill list and a mission that suddenly clashes with his destiny. His target? The man Jade is sworn to protect. His problem? The mate bond pulling him straight to her.
It’s love versus legacy. Lust versus loyalty. And underneath it all is a deadly secret that could destroy everything if it ever comes to light.
Think: 🗡️ Urban fantasy vibes with high-stakes political drama 🔥 Fated mates with serious emotional tension 🏙️ Corporate warfare meets ancient magic 💔 That bittersweet, slow-burn ache with a side of “doomed but delicious”
Even with the steam kept behind closed doors, the chemistry is undeniable and the story grabs you by the throat (and maybe your heart) from page one. Twisty, intense, and utterly addictive—Shattered gives fate a run for its money.
Perfect for fans of slow-burn angst, supernatural secrets, and morally grey characters who fall hard and fight harder.
Whew, this was one superb series starter. I had been up super late finishing this book one night because I knew I couldn't let sleep interfere with me getting to the happy ever after of the main characters I've instantly liked. At 1 am I had told the hubby (over video call) that I was going to spare 10 more minutes to read, but said 10 minutes ended up stretched to an hour when I finally got to the book's end.
I'm convinced that series starters are crucial to setting the stage for how the rest of the series will be potentially received. This book created in me an excited anticipation for future books given the new paranormal world introduced here, the immortal beings that populate this world and the unique abilities they possess, and the over-arching plot that I know will play out for the rest of the series. Of course, central to my adoration of stories like these is the fated-mates trope that Ms. Anna has always written about so well in all her previous books. It always makes me curious each time how the couple meets, how they discover their connection, how they end up deciding whether to accept or reject it, and of course, how ultimately their relationship reaches its decisive conclusion. Through it all, it's one heck of a gripping literary ride.
Fair warning: this book ends in a happy for now for the main characters, but introduces us to the painful beginning of the story that will be the focus of the next book. So be prepared for a bittersweet tangle of emotions to well up in your chest when you get to the book's end.
I am grateful to the author for granting me a free review copy of this book. I leave this review voluntarily.
Y'all! This book was so good! I loved it! I was hooked from the first sentence to the last and couldn't read fast enough!
I'm a big fan of urban fantasy. If I had to pick a favorite genre, that would probably be it. Shattered is urban fantasy at its finest! The worldbuilding was great. It felt unique, yet familiar. And I thought the magic system was fascinating!
I really appreciated the fact that this featured a closed-door romance with no strong swearing. That's not always easy to find in this genre, so I was very happy about that.
I loved both Niko and Jade. While there was an enemies vibe between them in the beginning, I loved watching that dynamic shift. Their banter and chemistry was off the charts. To say sparks were flying is an understatement.
I highly, highly recommend this book! It's the first one I've read by this author, but it certainly won't be my last. I'm very eager for the next book in the series and am excited to check out the author's backlist!
I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
Shattered was a recommendation and Anna is a new to me author. I was quickly immersed in this urban fantasy fated mates story. Set in the human world the immortals have been fractured and each legion are pitted against each other. Jade and Nico find themselves on different sides and the law forbids them from being fated. The mystery and the workings of the Legion along with chemistry between Nico and Jade completely kept my attention from beginning to end. She did good with the world building so much so I can’t wait for the next book. I just loved Nico he was so refreshing as the MMC a broken hero that wouldn’t give up. If you love magic, shifters, intrigued and fated mates I would recommend this book. This does have an ending for the couple but the over all theme will continue into the next book.
An intriguing blend of enemies-to-lovers romance and political fantasy, this book drew me in with its unique premise and high-stakes immortal conflict. The chemistry between Jade and Niko crackled with tension, and their fated bond added emotional depth to the action-packed storyline.
However, I found myself wishing for more world building in the beginning. The six legions, the broken royal bloodline, and the magical corruption were all fascinating elements, but I would have loved more context upfront to fully immerse myself in the stakes and structure of this world.
Still, once the story hit its stride, I was hooked. The romance, revenge, and secrets kept me turning the pages. If you’re a fan of morally grey characters, slow-burn fantasy romance, and layered power struggles, this one is worth a read.
Thank you Anna Hawk for allowing me to be an Arc reader for this book. Overall I really enjoyed it!
I really enjoyed Nico and Jade. They were both strong and complex characters. Jade was tough, but she was also a secret romantic. Nico was funny, but he was also deep. I enjoyed how layered they were. I liked how they truly complimented one another and started to care for one another before they realized they were mated! 🥰
I liked the plot as well. I thought it was well paced and the mystery unfolded realistically! I’m definitely looking forward to the next installment of the overall story! I’m hooked!
Originally I was kinda throw off by the fact that there was such a mix of fantasy/supernatural and real-world situations (a business office). But the author did a good job of mixing the two and making it as natural as possible. It was a great blend.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ -Fated mates -Enemies (???) to lovers -Shifters
I read this book as an ARC, but this review is freely given and of my own thoughts.
I enjoyed the storyline in this first book! The FMC, Jade, got on my nerves during the second half of the book though😂 The more we find out about the plot makes her behavior understandable, but it was still infuriating to read at times- I seriously wanted to shake her! Jade’s powers definitely added to the story; we learn more about Niko (the MMC) and his past. Overall, I’d read book 2 to continue the storyline. This book covers Jade & Niko’s relationship, and while they have a happy ending in this book, there are definitely loose ends that can be shared from another character’s perspective.
I’m not much of a fantasy fan, but I love shifters so when the opportunity to read Shattered by Anne Hawke came up, I pounced. This story leans more towards a traditional fantasy story with a variety of realms, dimensions, and legions. It also has an intriguing enemies to lovers theme which is a favorite of mine. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the storyline, it’s very well written. My issue with fantasy is the level of complexity when I just want to be entertained. Even though there’s a fantasy feel to this book it doesn’t go so far into the deep end that I got bored. It was engaging and filled with enough devious plots to keep me on edge until the last page. Highly enjoyable and highly recommended!
I received an ARC for an honest review. This is my very first book by the author.
It has been a very long time since I have read any kind of fantasy or romantasy book, so I was very happy to be able to read this and get into Hawke’s fictitious world. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this interesting world and our two main characters. I loved their interesting conversations and how they felt connected with each other and tried to fight against this mutual connection, before they even found out that they were fated mates. The writing was also quite nice and made the whole reading journey very easily enjoyable. Niko joins the list of my favourite MMC for sure - he was such a charming character!
This was such a cool urban fantasy! The world feels epic, the magic system fascinating, and I'm really excited for future books to explore what Anna has created.
Jade and Nico were banter loving workplace enemies to lovers and it was beautiful.
kissing scenes: 🔥🔥🔥
banter: 🔥🔥🔥
fated mates: 🔥🔥🔥
plus Anna knows how to write a really hateable villain.
I'm super excited for the next book!!
💋make outs (level 3) 1 case of innuendo ⚠️fantasy violence, people die in the prologue and it's a little gruesome, character has PTSD, and there's manipulation and abuse from evil dudes. people get shot 🤬 mild swearing
This story was filled with action, betrayal, doubts and romance! The fmc thought she knew what she was standing for and that was on the other sode the mmc was but nothing is what is seems and she soon learns that lesson herself!
I absolutely recommend this if you are looking for a closed door romance book with a good plot!
Tropes ✨Fated Mates ✨Enemies To Lovers ✨Betrayal ✨Fun Banter
First I want to acknowledge that I was given this book for free to review. It was amazing I love the enemies to lovers trope. Our MFC Jade is strong and has started her own business from the ground up very independent. Our MMC Niko gives Cocky but once you move past it you realize he’s the HEA she didn’t know she needed. I cannot wait until the next book I have to know what happens with Julian and Quinn.
If you love shifter romances, this is the book for you. Shattered was fast paced, full of action, romance, magic, political intrigue, and found family. One thing I love about Anna Hawke’s books is that their are no huge info dumps. You get all the information you need to completely understand and lose yourself in the world she created.
*contains make-outs, innuendo, violence, and mild swearing
**I was sent a complimentary copy with no expectations for a favorable review.
I just finished Shattered, and I just want to say, this is hands down my favorite book written by Anna so far! It has sexy male main characters, tension that makes your toes curl, and drama that keeps you invested the whole way through the story. I genuinely loved it from page one. I can't wait to see how this story will develop!
Wow!!!! I absolutely LOVED Shattered. The plot, the characters, the ending….just wow! Every interaction between Niko and Jade was perfection. There was sass, banter, raw honesty, longing, affection, friendship, and all the emotions. Excited to read the next book.
Just like all her books this one gets off to a great start for this new series. We get a HFN ending with immortals and magic an enemy to lovers vibe and so much more. I enjoyed this book from start to finish and the ending leaves you wanting more. Absolutely perfect.
Shattered was a great read. I really enjoyed the story line and the characters. This book does not contain any spice. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Fantastic new series, first book by this author for me and not only can I barely wait for the next book, Suffered, but I am going to check out her entire backlist. This unique urban fantasy is enthralling, with intrigue and mystery, treason, an evil villain and his sidekicks that make your skin crawl. Romance and fated mates, magic and mind tricks, it has it all. I devoured it in one sitting, engaging in all the right ways, it holds you captive wanting to know each next event and becoming invested in more than just the main characters outcomes. If you enjoy slowly building but complex plot around unveiling the truth of past wrongs and finding a path forward with new companions against the odds, then I highly recommend you give this a go.
