The Crudge Whacker: Book Two of The Nigel Chronicles

Rate this book
Nigel’s back. And no one’s happy about it.

In a recent poll, the citizens of Amerigorn were asked who was the most-hated person of all time. Lord Smoron, that dark wizard who was responsible for two-thousand years of death and destruction, came in second.

The Crudge Whacker tells the continuing adventure of the boy who came in first.

Everyone hates Nigel. The humans and gorks want their amulet back and have declared open season on him in order to get it; his friends no longer want any part of his shenanigans; and his mom has kicked him out of the house.

If only he would destroy the dashed amulet, but Nigel is convinced he can use it for good. Unfortunately, his attempts at becoming a hero backfire, culminating in a disaster that threatens all life in Esteria.

Can Nigel save the world from himself? Find out in Dragon Squisher 2: The Crudge Whacker.

This young adult fantasy will appeal to fans of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams.

The Crudge Whacker has all the hilarity and shenanigans of the first book, with even more heart. You’ll laugh, sigh, cringe, and roll your eyes in equal measure—and you’ll love every second of it. I’m already looking forward to more Nigel and the gang!

Scott McCormick is the author of more Scott McCormick bios than any other Scott McCormick who ever Scott McCormicked. Look it up if you don’t believe me. He also writes the Mr. Pants graphic novels and the hilarious Audible Originals The Dragon Squisher, Spies! Sneak, Snoops, and Saboteurs Who Shaped the World, Mutually Assured Detention, and the number-one bestseller Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World. But who are we kidding? The real money is in writing bios. You take that advice to the bank. Tell ‘em Scott McCormick sent you. And if they ask you which Scott McCormick, you tell ‘em the Scott-McCormick-bio-writing Scott McCormick of the North Carolina Scott McCormicks. They’ll know who you mean.

"No elf has ever been mad enough to curse. Until I showed up, that is."

From beginning to end, this was one of those books that makes you say, "Who needs food? Who needs sleep? There's a hilarious adventure to get through! Also, I'm getting a great ab workout from laughing so hard."

Well, okay, that's what I said. But I'm pretty sure your results will be similar because this turned out to be one of those sequels that was evern better than the already fabulous first novel in the series ( The Dragon Squisher).

The basic premise is that Nigel has an all-powerful amulet that he's supposed to get rid of to keep the world safe. Most of the kingdom hates him, so he decides that the best way to combat that is not to destroy the amulet, but to do herois deeds with it. Which does not turn out very well. Not at all.

Overall, as you might have guessed from those earlier paragraophs, this book is downright funny. But it's also got a lot of heart, some wonderful new characters (I really wanted to see more of the gender-fluid blob!), and a slew of wholly imaginative problems Nigel has to muddle through. I also find myself "caring" more for Nigel in this book than the last. The way his friends treat him, the way no one seems to stand up for him, really made him a sympathetic underdog.

I highly recommend The Crudge Whacker if you're looking for an engaging read, loads of silly adventure, and a good laugh-induced ab workout.

Note: This book can possibly read as a stand-alone, but you'll enjoy it far more and understand MANY more of the jokes and situations if you read The Dragon Squisher first.

Is there a rating system for how loud you snortlaugh in public while enjoying a book? If there is, this is one kazillion out of a kazillion snortlaughs with some cackling thrown in. (Further review and details of how I managed to mortify myself in public to follow.)

Poor Nigel. He really does have the best of intentions, but somehow he just ... starts wars? Looses monstrous hordes on the land? Keeps giving people heart attacks and thoroughly upsetting the elven healers? Any way you cut it, things are not going well for the Dragon Squisher, but Nigel is not one for giving up, even if maybe, possibly, it might be sort of a good idea at times ...

I loved 'The Dragon Squisher', and this book is just as full of action, humour, loyalty, and generous lacings of snark. It's SUCH a fun read, and while I realise I'm at least a generation older than the target audience, I refuse all suggestions it's too young for me. This is the best sort of book - readable by everyone.
