One forbidden obsession
London, 1865
Born a baron’s daughter, young Evangeline Brimworth knows a thing or two about aristocracy’s politics. Though she never thought she’d be the bargaining chip. When her family winds up penniless and her hand in marriage is sold to a man old enough to be her geriatric grandfather to restore their fortune. But Evangeline refuses to be caged without a fight—and she’s willing to risk everything to escape.

The last person she expected to get in her way is her stepson.

Azriel Caine. Cynical, mysterious, and seemingly following her every step. Because somehow, he holds a dangerous secret about her over her head, and unless she wants to destroy her reputation, she must do as he says. Including wed him.

Their impropriety is nothing new for Azriel, and he hardly cares. He believes in obsession. In possession.
And the more Evangeline peels back his layers, she finds herself craving his darkness almost as much as she fears it.

Fans of Bridgerton craving the scandalous, wicked underbelly of high society will devour this dark, taboo romance from bestselling author RD Baker that will leave you swooning, reeling, and gasping at every turn.

Historical romance erotica in the vein of Kate Raven’s Brutal Serpent: enjoyable and my type of deprived smut. However, I wish I could have given this 5 stars!!

It’s a little modern in its parlance, but the main conflict felt like beating a dead horse and confused. I feel like this wanted to be dark smut but not dark in terms of the relationship.

I thought the first 100 pages were excellent. They were stepmother and stepson (and her 3 years younger than him) and the cat-and-mouse game of does he know or does he not know that was hot.

Hero was depraved, dirty talking, sweet talking. He was the highlight!!

However, the heroine’s main conflict was not forgiving him for a medley of sins. I think I felt unsatisfied. I don’t think he gave a good reason for why he left her in a shit situation, knowing what he knew of her and his dad’s relationship! Yes, it’s good that she took agency in her life but was he just going to stay away until… ? It would have been good if he had a plan or some action to take.
Even when he finds out what his dad did to secure her as a bride, there is no mention that he was planning to do something about it. It would have been good for his character to mention he had a plan, considering how fast he moved.

My main thing was it did feel repetitive. I don’t feel the arguments were going anywhere new. Instead, the hero gets redeemed. See how he doesn’t make women or children suffer? And that’s all that was needed to redeem him.

Also I felt the “whore with the heart of gold” trope felt a little tired. Even the line, “in another life we could have been friends.” It’s good that the heroine respects a sex worker, but still feels a little pat-ourselves-on-the-back.

However, the first 200 pages were an incredible ride. I am definitely reading more form the author.

This was actually really good up until the half way point. It was giving prefect dark, gothic romance vibes. Then the MMC turned into a “I’m actually not a bad guy” 😅. Is it bad that I wanted him to remain an evil and scheming pos? I also wasn’t super into him waiting so long and doing nothing about his feelings for the fmc for YEARS while she was married to his old af father. I did like the fmc taking initiative and killing his creepy ass at the beginning of the book.

I will read more from RD Baker in the future, she has talent and I liked that she did a lot of research about the Victorian era while writing this book. It made it feel more authentic. The quality of the writing was great. I would live to see more dark historicals written by her (and anyone really, I wish that this genre had more books).

I feel like this should be praised simply by virtue of being a dark historical romance ✨🙌🏼✨

I loved the idea of it, the beginning was marvelously grabbing. The different shades of morally grey between the MCs 🤌🏼

And honestly, nothing the hero did to the heroine could be compared to the systemic oppression she (and all women) suffered from church, state and family members at that time 🤬

The story kind of lost it's darkness rather unexpectedly. Towards the end it was simply a historical romance with a misunderstood hero. Plus the heroine lost all her venom and turned into a cuddly kitten 🫣

but good story nonetheless.

I’m of two minds with Unseen: what truly beautiful writing, and what the hell? LMAO

The prose in this book is absolutely stunning. I’m not one of those really ~in the know~ about Victorian/gothic sayings/customs/dress/culture, but some of my favorite books ever have had those vibes, so I read enough of it to know I love the way it was written here.

While I am still relatively new to dark/taboo romance, I’m glad I kept pushing with this one. I’m committed to reading more sub genres I’ve either told myself I’m not smart or adventurous enough to stick with, so I’ll be going through R.D. Baker’s backlist now that I really, really enjoy her writing, the sociopolitical messaging in her books, and, most of all, that fact that she writes vengeful FMCs so very well.

I was deeply put off by Azriel for most of the book—I did become slightly less so by the end, but it was slight. Evie is strong and intelligent, but she was also incredibly short-sighted about things due to her being sheltered and groomed, so it felt like the big conflict here kept circling the drain. Something did bother me that I’ve found is disturbingly common in dark romances I’ve read so far: fat people are almost always written as unbearable, disturbing, angry, ugly, and disgusting seemingly for no other sin except being fat. Or they’ll be completely awful people but the protagonist will take a moment to take in how fat and nasty that person is. I’ve said this about several books before: I hope authors stop depicting fatness this way. Also, England enslaved people—the UK was more active in the transatlantic slave trade than the US—as a Black person I was disturbed by Azriel insinuating this was not the case.

I had fun, idk! Maybe Azriel and Evie deserved the gallows, but they worked for me!

I'm really not sure how to rate this book. I have very mixed feelings about it.

I loved the first part. It's gripping, but I found the second half boring and almost cheesy 🙁

First of all, I have a real soft spot for dark historical romance. It’s a subgenre that pretty much doesn’t exist anymore.

In my opinion, bodice-ripper-style historical romances were the ancestors of dark romance, but this aspect has now completely disappeared from the historical romance genre and dark romance, for its part, rarely uses historical settings, even though I personally think it's one of the most fitting genres for them.

One of the aspects I really enjoyed too (I don’t consider it a spoiler since it happens right at the beginning) : The heroine is married to the hero’s father, a man three times her age, and she decides to kill him in his sleep. It was very interesting to have a sort of anti-heroine who, while I completely understood her decision, isn’t the kind of character we’re usually given in this type of romance.

The hero takes the opportunity to force her into marrying him—and he’s exactly the kind of hero I enjoy. He’s manipulative, coercive, totally set on having her no matter what. And there’s this real tension and chemistry between them that just works.

But unfortunately, that tension totally falls flat in the second half. Neither the characters nor the romance manage to hold onto that spark, that push-and-pull energy that made the beginning so good. So I honestly don’t know how to feel about it—it had real potential, but it just didn’t manage to keep it going all the way through.

Safety/ Spoilers

- No sharing or cheating

- No OM / OW drama - But I know that this is a dealbreaker for some people: there is a sex scene between the hero and a prostitute at the very beginning—at that point, nothing has happened between the two main characters.

TW

(I won't spend too much time on this section, as there is a detailed list of all the TWs at the start of the book.)

-Dub and non consent (between the MC's)
- Murder
- Physical abuse/sexual abuse by OM (heroine's ex husband) in the past.

What a wild ride! My first R.D.Baker book and the writing was pretty good, hence why I won't stop here. However, I admit what really made me read this one was the promise of a historical dark romance with a stepmother and stepson relationship. Not a reverse age-gap, mind you (though that would have been pretty interesting as well), as the heroine's previous husband was an old mummy and she's even younger than his son. I know, the horror!

All in all, I would say I was sold on it. The book started with a banger and I enjoyed the fast descent into chaos very much. Also, this story has a pretty modern feel to it with a few historical touches here and there to appease the masses, in the vein of mafia romances. As a lover of historical romance, I would have liked more elements of it, but I can't say I was displeased.

Finally, read this if you like drama, repressed heroines in for the sexual awakening of their lives and completely obsessed heroes hell-bent on debauching their woman.

**If you're feeling unsure about diving into this story due to the taboo elements of the relationship, it may help to know that Evie is 23 and Azriel is 26. This isn’t a reverse age-gap romance. While their dynamic might challenge societal norms, their ages are close enough to ease any major concerns.**

This is a historical romance set with dark themes. However, within these dark themes, all the delicious elements you like within dark romance are prominent. Forbidden romance? Check. Morally grey obsessive and possessive MMC? Check. Dark and depraved spice? Check. Murder and blackmail? Check!

This story kicks off with a strong first chapter and maintains its momentum all the way through. Evie is fierce, determined, and ready to do whatever it takes to gain her freedom. Azriel, on the other hand, is deeply obsessed and just as willing to defy norms and expectations to keep her in his life. Though their relationship begins in a tempestuous and toxic place, it gradually evolves into something genuinely moving and heartfelt. It's a fantastic portrayal of the hate-to-love trope, told through beautiful writing. The setting—among the upper elite of Victorian England—adds an air of sophistication and heightens the taboo aspect of their connection. The pacing perfectly mirrors the story’s tension and urgency, while still allowing space for detail. And that twist? Absolutely loved it—it added a deeper layer of meaning and intention to their relationship.

Beyond the central romance between Evie and Azriel, I especially appreciated the subplot highlighting Evie’s strength and resilience in the face of a harsh, restrictive society. Watching her come into her own—breaking out of her shell, embracing her desires, and experiencing a sexual awakening—was incredibly rewarding. At 24, she was ready to live a quiet, solitary life, but Azriel’s pursuit, though questionable at first, ultimately played a role in her journey of self-discovery. He encouraged her to explore her own power and identity, especially in terms of her sexuality. While his support did serve his own interests to some degree, I genuinely believe his intentions were rooted in something simpler: a belief that everyone deserves to experience pleasure without shame. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

This story pushes boundaries and explores how complex and flawed characters can heal together and learn to love one another. Even if you are new to historical romance, give this book a chance. You won't be disappointed.

Don’t judge me for this one 👀. This book isn’t perfect, but since I absolutely devoured the first 30%, I felt like I had a duty to write a review. I don’t know how this ended up on my wish list, and by the looks of the few reviews on Amazon, it probably wasn’t Instagram or Threads. Where is the marketing? I feel like so many Dark Romance girlies would eat this up?

Anyway, expect morally grey characters and decent spice. Also: A very possessive love interest and a few huh??? moments. For anybody who wants the list, here is an overview of the TWs and kinks in this book:

— CNC
— dubious consent
— breeding
— emotional manipulation
— age gap
— stepmother
— a morally grey ML

Yeah, you read that right. Stepmother. But it’s not what you think.

how do I best explain this book?
starting out with a banger like chapter 1 had me setting it down. staring at the wall and questioning my decisions.
did I return? of course I did. I had to see this through and see it through i did.
I did not have step mom / step son on my book bingo card but you know what ? I ate that up.
if you are not fan of historical romance. do not.
however, for my Mr. Darcy girlies, may I have a moment of your time to introduce to you, Azriel Caine ?
" You can fight me all you want, Evie. Oh you can fight me, but you will not win. I will break this all down, these walls, these masks you show the world. I am the only one... I am the only one who wants you free, little viper. and no one will....Fuck."
"No one will ever love you like I do, Evie. And if they ever try, Ill kill them."
please I am swooning. giggling. kicking my feet.
I found this to quite enjoyable and dark historical romance may have a newfound place in my heart.
read your trigger warnings. As Azriel Caine says, hes not a good man.

A dark and taboo romance set in the Victorian era? Obviously, I couldn't resist! This book made me wish for more dark historical romances just like this one. It was a page-turner from beginning to end and made me question my morals once or twice. I'd highly recommend Unseen to those who love dark romances with fierce and determinded heroines and their unhinged and feral men that will do anything to have them. It was a delicious ride wrapped in darkness and the forbidden.

“I read this book and thought you’d love it”- is my love language, so when a friend sent this one my way I couldn’t resist.

I cut my teeth on the classics and have a soft spot for historical romance. My taste has been trending toward the dark side recently so this book just ticked all my boxes. If you don’t normally go for a period piece this might be the one you start with!

Unseen by RD Baker is a masterclass in dark historical romance — haunting, provocative, and utterly captivating from start to finish. Set in the restrictive and often cruel world of Victorian England, this story plunges you into the life of Evangeline Brimworth, a baron’s daughter whose life is sold off to save her family’s fortune. But Evie is far from a helpless victim; her fierce spirit and determination to reclaim control drive the heart of this gripping tale.

The complex and forbidden relationship between Evie and Azriel Caine, her enigmatic stepson, defies conventions and explores the dangerous edges of obsession, power, and desire. Azriel is both protector and tormentor, a man scarred by his past but utterly devoted in his own dark way. Their chemistry is electric and raw, layered with tension that will keep you hooked, breathless, and questioning the boundaries of love and possession.

Evangeline’s character was one of Unseen's most compelling aspects. Despite living in a rigid Victorian society where women, especially those of her class, had little autonomy, Evangeline’s fierce determination to claim control over her own life shone through every page. Even when her situation seemed utterly hopeless, she refused to accept defeat and instead began exploring paths and possibilities she might never have dared consider otherwise. Her resilience and quiet rebellion against the confines of her world made her a truly inspiring and relatable heroine.

Azriel is the quintessential morally black anti-hero, and if you’re drawn to dark, complex characters, he will definitely captivate you. There were moments when I questioned whether I could forgive some of his actions or fully root for their relationship, but as the story unfolded, Azriel’s fierce devotion and desire to empower Evangeline gradually won me over. He pushes her to break free from societal chains and reclaim her bodily autonomy, wanting to see her rise like a phoenix from the ashes. At the same time, he embodies that intense, possessive kind of love—the “burn the world for you” type, that fans of taboo and dark romance know and crave.

For fans of historical romances that push boundaries and dark romances that explore complicated, imperfect characters, Unseen is a must-read. It’s a beautifully twisted dance of desire and defiance that will stay with you, leaving you craving more.

Trigger Warning: This book contains themes of forced marriage, dubiously consensual dynamics, emotional and psychological intensity, and dark, taboo content that may be triggering or too intense for some readers. Please review warnings carefully before diving in.

I love a good taboo romance. Especially when said romance is set in a time where propriety is paramount and society is waiting to judge you around every corner. But really, who cares about all of that when your sinfully sexy step son is just waiting in the wings for his million year old father to die so that he can carry you off into the sunset towards a much deserved HEA? I mean, would Evie prefer her independence? Sure. Is consent often dubious, at best? Definitely. Is Azriel a morally gray stalker type with obsessive tendencies and the ability to sweet talk a girl straight into the best kind of Stockholm syndrome? Absolutely, and most would go willingly. His years long love for this woman is swoon-worthy to say the least, even if his way of showing it is a tad unconventional in the beginning. Regardless, I am here for it. In true RD fashion, it has just the right amount of dark & spicy. Although I definitely wouldn't have minded a little more of both in the mosoleum (iykyk), because let's be honest, that coffin was just asking to be defiled. 😏🤍🩷💚

Imagine an arranged marriage to a feeble man 15-years older than your father. If that wasn’t bad enough, you also have a ridiculously attractive rake of a step-son who is only 3 years older than you. Would you be tempted to stray from your marriage bed? For Azriel Caine, I would. 😏

“If I am a sinner, then you are my sin.”

This story was set in the Victorian era and gave off Bridgerton vibes (but way more taboo). I’m not someone who usually loves historical romance, but the scandalous nature of this one captured my attention so much that I read it in a single day. It was all quite dramatic and scandalous (for the era), and I loved every second. It’s a quick read that my fellow dark romance readers will enjoy.

DNF’d at 46%. I had such high hopes for this one! Historical and dark romance? Sign me TF up! 😍

I loved Evie, taking her destiny into her own hands and unafraid to get them dirty in the process, and Azriel was a complete bastard - handsome, cruel and charming. The ideal dark romance MMC. The opening scene - Evie smothering her abusive husband with a pillow - was a thing of glory, but it quickly went downhill from there...

Azriel was besotted with Evie, despite that - from her POV, anyway - the two hardly knew each other. The nickname 'beloved', telling her she 'owned him'... None of it screamed dark romance to me. It felt like the author was trying to manipulate Azriel's character to appeal to a particular audience, but really he's just a Golden Retriever wearing a black jacket.

The writing was okay, but very preteen on Wattpad. I could overlook that, but I gave up when we got to the carriage scene because by this point there was a pattern forming and I could see how the book was going to go.

Step 1. Evie hates Azriel! She will not submit to him!

Step 2. Azriel shoves his hand under Evie's dress, hissing some possessive filth in her ear

Step 3. Evie gives in and a mediocre spicy scene ensues, containing all of the usual acts and quotes we expect from a dark romance spicy scene but it hits like a slap from a wet fish.

Step 4. See Step 1 and repeat until Evie falls in love with him. It doesn't matter how, she just does.

This wasn't a dark romance, but it was really really really trying so hard to be one.

If Azriel Caine is the devil, then I would crawl on my hands and knees toward him in hell. The man is filthy, depraved, and absolutely insatiable, and I mean all of that as a compliment.

He’s definitely not a good man, not in a lot of ways—in fact he is far from perfect—but he’s perfect for Evie and that’s the only thing that matters.

I loved Evie as a character, especially in the Victorian setting where she wasn’t a virgin but also wasn’t exactly experienced in a lot of ways. But she also wasn’t a wilting flower either and definitely gave as good as she got when it came to Azriel’s whims.

Their relationship is fraught with mistrust, misunderstanding and obsession, but underneath all of that blooms a beautiful and loving relationship in the end.

If you enjoy dark romance and morally grey characters (because both of them definitely are) this book is incredibly sexy and RD Baker is a master of writing novels that are impossible to put down once you start.

I enjoyed this book so much, i was hooked from the very first page! Both characters were toxic in their own ways, but Azriel was next level... a walking red flag. Still, they were perfect for each other, they gave one another exactly what they needed, effortlessly and naturally.

The whole “my stolen bride” part was a bit confusing at the time, but honestly… the guy was unhinged, and in his mind, she was his from the start, so it worked.
I highly recommend, even if you're not into historical romance (like me).

RD Baker has done it again, and my heart (and sanity) is not okay. Unseen is a historical dark romance that had me hooked, gasping, and low-key questioning my taste in men... again.

Evangeline Brimworth is young, beautiful, and unfortunately stuck in an arranged marriage with a man old enough to need a nap after dinner. Just when she thinks she’s found her escape, in walks Azriel Caine, her stepson who ruins her world in the most deliciously twisted way possible.

Don’t skip this one. You’ll fall headfirst for Azriel, with all his dark, stalkerish, morally questionable, crazy energy. And honestly? You won’t even be mad about it.

Unseen by RD Baker is truly in a league of its own. This dark historical romance will shatter your aversion to old English conversation in a positively sinful way. The closest I could explain it in similar vibes of books would be if Pride & Prejudice and Haunting Adeline had a beautiful baby and even that, I feel, does not do the description justice. I couldn’t get enough of this book and still wanted to know what happened next every time I had to put it down due to my busy schedule. The heartache and abuse in which Evangeline goes through then the initial brazen nature of Azriel sets the tone of the book at the beginning. From then on out these two, Evangeline and Azriel, dance around each other viciously until they find themselves falling. From the first few pages I was ensnared by the story and I found, as I read further, more interest in the story as I went. Taboo, dubcon that toes the line just enough, and sometimes outright debauchery that will make any dark romance fanatics more excited to read this. Truly, a very excellent book and one I plan on rereading in the future.

Thank you RD Baker for providing me with an eARC. Another amazing book that I must get my hands on!

All thoughts and opinions are honest and my own.

You 👏🏻 Are 👏🏻 Not 👏🏻 Ready 👏🏻

Easily my favorite book of the year so far and my first 5⭐️. The plot is plotting. The spice is spicing. The characters are three-dimensional and totally captivating. The writing is simply incredible.

This takes place in 1865/1866 London, but if you’re not into historical romance, please don’t let that deter you. I promise the first chapter will have you hooked. Evie is young and beautiful. A perfect jewel for her noble, but destitute family to trade; marriage to a wealthy man 15 years her father’s senior for their continued comfort. Azriel is her utterly obsessed stepson, still years older than her 24 years. I don’t want to say much more than that, so I don’t ruin it for you. Their journey is rocky, but I loved everything about it. They tested each other. They made each other better. They were for each other things they never had known and never thought possible. It’s an incredible book. Not one negative. I will never shut up about this book.
