Harrington Bay Academy #1

I Don’t Need Your Protection

Rate this book
He was hired to save her, but she’s the one who saves him.

I should be excited to attend the best academy in the country, but I’m not. Because my parents died a month ago and my life is in danger.

My grandfather hires a teenage bodyguard to protect me. Caleb Foster is the grumpiest person I’ve ever met. He doesn’t let me out of his sight, barely cracks a smile, and starts to suspect the guy I like.

How many times do I have to tell him I don’t need a bodyguard?

Addie doesn’t understand just how much danger she’s in and it’s up to me to protect her. We spend a lot of time together, which I know frustrates her. And she irritates me as well.

The closer we get, though, the more I learn how kind she is. She helps me forget the pain I went through two years ago. She gets me to smile and it’s not long before she’s taking up all the space in my brain and heart.

But I was hired to save her, not fall in love with her. How do I shut my feelings off and be the bodyguard she needs me to be?

I Don’t Need Your Protection is the first book in the Harrington Bay Academy series. If you like sweet YA romances that make you swoon, laugh, and cry, this book is for you!

DNF @ 30 pages or 9% in.

The writing style of this one didn’t flow as naturally as the prior two YA books I’ve read did (both by Janette Rallison), but it wasn’t terrible. Some parts and dialogue were cringy in a bad-actor kind of way? Maybe even bringing back memories of Wattpad with all the “duh”s and “no way”s. Not sure how to describe it, but one quote from the book might show what I mean: “I’ll no longer be Addie Hayes, a typical teen who’s looking forward to her first kiss, whenever that will happen. I’ll now be…ugh, an heiress.”

After a sentence ends in “hehe”, I decided sleep was more important than reading (a rarity for me) and the writing probably wasn’t going to get better, so I’m DNFing about 30 pages / 9% in. A bummer because the cover is cute.

Main Content from what I read-
Addie thinks a guy looks like a Greek god.

No language stronger than “bull”, stupid, holy heck, & crap.

Addie’s parents recently died in a car accident & Addie was put into a group home; Shortly into meeting her grandfather, he implies her parents were murdered because of his enemies.

Noticing a guy’s appearance and muscles (up to a few sentences).

spoiler free hate review!!

the concept of this book seemed very promising, but the writing style, the characters all were so underwhelming that i just couldn’t read it anymore

characters

addie:
omg this stupid girl infuriates me so much. every other sentence she was asking the reader so many unnecessary questions that made me think that even the author didn’t know how her book was going to go. not only that, she was the type of character that was so freaking pick me. here’s a quote to prove it: I’ll now be…ugh, an heiress. “Thanks, uh, Mr. Butler Guy,” like is it that bad to be an heiress?? -673/10

caleb:
ugh addie’s so called “bodyguard”. all he does is follow her around, become super suspicious of her friends and the one guy who she talked to for 5 minutes. usually i would beg for a bodyguard x princess trope but this book made me realize that it’s not the food anyway (no hate to twisted games) 0/10

warner:
even though i was only a quarter into the book, i knew that warner would end up being the villain of the story. also, he was so bland and vanilla he reminds me of dean from gilmore girls but without the good looks 😒 1/10

the plot:
the plot was so basic, so infuriating and SO PREDICTABLE. only one love interest had a pov for god’s sake. it was boring, moved so slowly and all the characters were immature even though they’re in high school.

rating explanation:
one reason why this got a dnf was because of how many times it needed an edit. one sentence had a fucking “hehe”. i’m not kidding. there were parentheses, the same adjectives in the same sentence, it was like an 11 year old wrote it.

hate quotes:
(aka things that made me dnf and why)

“As soon as Colin opens the car door, I’m hit with the October breeze that blows through my long, wavy light brown hair.”
- has this author ever heard of show not tell??

“It’s the same shade as mine, and Dad’s too (minus the gray).”
- this author needs an editor

“He’s in the middle of writing something on fancy stationary paper with a fancy-looking pen.”
- its like a child wrote this

“Read the student manual, if you want. Most kids ignore it, hehe.”
- EDIT. PLEASE. IM BEGGING. WTF IS HEHE

“I bumped into a Warner yesterday. I, uh…” My cheeks flame. “I kind of fell on my butt right in front of him.”
- oh shes such a clumsy klutzy PICK ME

“My gaze leaps to his buff chest”
- EDITOR PLEASE

“Like why would Warner slum it with a scholarship student like me?”
- like, you need to stop with the like, annoying questions and like, get a like, editor, like yeah

overview:
this was written by a child without an editor

જ⁀➴ my thoughts!
• hiiii so i read this after a exhausting shift at work. i wasn’t expecting anything honestly, i just wanted something mind numbing and relaxing. and this was…something! the fmc annoyed me to no end—why do girls in books act so ungrateful when they find out they’re rich? (looking at you, avery grambs) and this is a weird take but i wanted there to be more romance between the main couple? i felt like the book was just her flirting w a random side guy and then finding out he’s a doofus after multiple occasions of hanging out 💀 don’t get me wrong i liked the mmc, i just wanted more of his character and less of him lurking in the shadows?? like bruh ur not batman 😛 also this one side character was obsessed w books but like in the most obnoxious way. i will say i do relate many many things to books and songs and vice versa but w this gurl it was every time she opened her mouth 😭 i think a positive of this book was that i appreciated that their ages were younger, most main characters nowadays are 17/18, but thats just me being nitpicky. ALSOOO, the hurt/comfort scenes between our main couple was rly adorable and cutesy <3

i hope u enjoyed my rant review!

I loved the slow burn between Caleb and Addie and sometimes I had to remind myself that Caleb is 16 like I kept thinking he was 18. 😭

It could easily be a 5 star, but the ending was a bit rushed. They immediately started saying, "You are everything to me, I love you so much." But otherwise, it was really good. My favorite part was that slow dancing, and it was really exciting 🤭. I always had no faith in Caleb to find her, but he always did. But at the end, they kept complimenting each other, and then he'd say something else and then she'd say something, and it felt like they were being so formal with each other. But I was really waiting to finish the book because this is my first time reading a bodyguard trope, and i LOVEDDDD IT

This was such a great starting point for Emma Dalton’s new series. I have been waiting for another boarding school romance to sink into and this definitely hit the spot.

Addie is thrust into a new life after discovering that her grandfather is the richest person a month whilst coping with her parents’ death. Once she finds out that her life is in danger, she is sent to Harrington Bay Academy, a boarding school, with a bodyguard who happens to be her age and dedicated to his job. No, these are not spoilers, but actually in the blurb.

Just wanted to point out that they’re the same age in case some people were very iffy about the fact that this is a bodyguard romance. To be honest, I was intrigued at how Emma was going to pull this trope off in the genre that she writes in. Normally, you wouldn’t associate the bodyguard romance trope with young adult/teen romance.

However, I did finish this book in a day. So, take that however you can.

I LOVED IT! I’m a sucker for the first book in a series so I enjoy world building and learning about the characters in a series. The slowburn was great, the drama highly appreciated, and I couldn’t help but be on my toes with the small bits of mystery. This is what I love about YA romance, personally, and I’m so glad to have dived back into Emma Dalton’s books.

cute, fast read

Very cute book, if a bit far-fetched. Nice pace & very realistic characters, save for the killers chasing the MFC. If you’re looking for a beach read that doesn’t require a lot of brain power, this nice little book is for you!

Addie’s life for the past month is a whirlwind. Her parents are killed in an accident and she is sent to a group home, only to be discovered by her rich grandfather she didn’t know she had. But her life is in danger, so she is sent to a private school complete with false identity and a bodyguard.

Caleb comes from a long line of bodyguards and despite being only sixteen, he takes his assignment seriously. However, the forced proximity softens him and he struggles to control his rising feelings for her while remaining her protector.

Review:
The story is well paced, allowing the characters to reveal themselves as the story progresses. It is easy to empathize with Addie as she struggles with her new reality.
Caleb is the tragic hero, dealing with his own loss while trying to honor the memory of his mother. He is torn between his feelings and his duty.
The story is complete with the usual boarding school drama and rich kid antics. The tension is delightful and moves the story to its satisfying HEA.
Emma Dalton has outdone herself in the kick-off to the new series. I can hardly wait for the rest.

This review includes spoilers! Overall this was a pretty good book I think. I didn't like how much she seemed to be into Warner. It wasn't done in that good of a way because she seemed to change her mind really fast. Also when she went to the sleepover and then got abandoned how did she magically get her phone back? She said she forgot her phone in the mean girl's room, but suddenly gets it back when she texts Warner to ask her to visit her when she is sick. Also Addie's life is in danger which means she should tell NOBODY the truth because that is putting her life and their life in danger including her friends. How can Caleb be so protective but then when she tells him that she told her friends her secret that he isn't mad? Also finally some friends that are actually good friends unlike a lot of books!

*4.5* I didn’t have high hopes for this book, but I ended up rlly liking it! It barley cussed which I liked! The writing style was…eh. I feel like I could have written better but I rlly liked the plot! I did feel like the main character was kinda pick me so that kinda sucked. I loved Sophie! She was so funny and such a book worm (like meeee). Caleb was so grumpy, I laughed every time he was with her (which was all the time lol). Age rating: 12+? As I said, it was clean, funny, light and fluffy—just really good. I don’t recommend this to everyone but to some people who rlly like bodyguard Romances go read it!

Poorly written

I wanted this book to be good, I really did.
It had a few scenes in it that were cheesy but ok. The rest of it was boring.
The present-tense made it feel like I was reading a script. Present-tense is difficult to pull off successfully.
The plot was basically someone's nonsensical daydream, which is not a problem, honestly. It is fiction, after all!
It could have been a fun read if more effort was put in to enriching and diversifying the language.
I am a little curious about the next book, but I won't be purchasing it.

Great read…until the end

This book was really good and I couldn’t put it down. I read it in 24 hours. My only issue was the last several chapters where everything went a little too perfectly and it became so cheesy I began rolling my eyes at every scene and prayed for the ending to just come already. The male character by the end didn’t even resemble what made him so charming for the majority of the book and he became sappy and uninspired (gag). But the majority of the book is worth the read.

Oh my gods, ugh. (those who get it get it)
The amount of "ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" used to get the word count higher and make her look cutesy WAS TOO MUCH TO BEAR. ICK. Also Caleb being like, "she has such a kind heart" or whatever WASNT TRUE. THIS GIRL IS JUST NAIVE DUDE. LEARN THE DIFFERENCE. I'm not saying this to hate, there was some things I liked in this- scratch that- Emma has some other good books, HOWEVER THIS WAS NOT ONE OF THEM.

Wonderful!

I was a huge fan of Dalton's Invisible Girls series, and was happy to read this new book in her new series. I was not disappointed. I loved Addie. She was such a big-hearted character. And Caleb was amazing too! I feel as though the author--who was already great--has grown even more by leaps and bounds. I look forward to the next installment.

This book was absolutely amazing I couldn’t put it down and ended up binging it all in one night! Caleb’s vows to protect Addie melted my heart, and their relationship is just the sweetest. The bodyguard storyline combined with the enemies to lovers, plus the she fell first, he fell harder trope, made it such a wholesome grumpy x sunshine romance. Oh, to be loved by a man like Caleb 😍🥺🫶🏻

I chose to read this book because I absolutely loved the invisible girls club by Emma Dalton so when she came out with another series I had to read it. I was very disappointed with this book though, it was very hard to finish reading it because I felt like it was badly written. I will still keep reading the series though because I hope it will get better.

Good plot, poor writing

I liked the way the story developed, but the writing felt very forced. I felt like the author had good ideas but lacked the skills to put them on paper. Overall, 2/5 stars.

Great YA book for mid teens

I Don't Need Your Protection is a great story for young to mid teens. The main character and her body guard are 16, and they act like normal 16 year olds. I enjoyed the simplicity of this story. It is just a sweet, innocent romance perfect for teens.

It was cute, and clean maybe one curse word. Few kisses. Crazy to think of a 16 year old training as a body guard. She was very naive.

I did find myself wanting to know how it ends. Reminds me of Princess diaries a little bit.

It was a cute story and definitely PG enough to recommend to a middle schooler. On the con side, the action/suspense scenes were awkward. Those scenes could have been better developed and less cheesy.
