The start of an all-new crossover event between Star Trek and Defiant is here! From the Eisner-nominated writers of Star Trek, Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly; the critically acclaimed writer of Star Defiant, Christopher Cantwell; and artist Davide Tinto (Star Bounty Hunters and Devil’s Reign), Lore War #1 shows us a universe rebuilt in Lore’s image. The crews of the Theseus and the Defiant scattered across the universe with no memory of who they once were—some even worship Lore as their God. Lore has won; his rule is absolute. But The Sisko remains, and there are forces who wish to remind him of his power.
every time i pick up a star trek comic book i do so with great hope and then it is invariably very disappointing. this had some fun little asides and references from hooboy not for me.
i keep hearing great things about the current LD books though so maybe i'll give those a spin.
As a fan of many Star Trek series, I really enjoyed this mashup of different corners of the franchise. There’s plenty of action to keep the story moving, but it also makes room for classic Star Trek philosophy. Those quieter moments of reflection, the big “who are we as humans?” questions, are very much present, and I appreciated that balance. I don’t consider myself a hardcore Star Trek nerd. The more technical and scientific aspects of the universe have never been the main draw for me. I know some of the science is grounded in real concepts while other parts are pure invention, but that side of Star Trek has never been what hooked me. So the fact that I enjoyed this comic as much as I did says a lot. If it worked for me, I can only imagine how much more someone who loves the technical details and lore would enjoy it, because those elements are absolutely here. One thing I especially liked was the inclusion of a brief interlude that runs parallel to the main story and is presented in a Lower Decks art style. Some of the Lower Decks characters appear there, and that portion of the story was originally published separately. Since this is a compilation of multiple issues, it was nice to see that material placed exactly where it fits in the larger narrative, without requiring the reader to track down another comic. Because Lower Decks is far less serious than most other Star Trek series, that section works as a fun, lighter-toned break in the middle of a very high-stakes story. It added variety without disrupting the overall momentum. There’s not much more to say, honestly. If you like Star Trek at all, you’ll enjoy this comic. And the more deeply you love the franchise, the more you’re likely to absolutely adore it.
Such a huge let down for me. I hate this ridiculous storyline making Lore the creator of the Universe. Never really liked those kind of stories in TOS, didn't like Q at first until we got to see him un-Q and then have a different personality. I will read these books but will most likely rate them lower due to the silly storyline. I hope to be proven wrong but thsi first issue did nothing to change that. Especially with the great stories that led to this...
Oh, great, an alternate universe. The cop out for writers when they run out of ideas. This Lore War is supposed to be what this entire series has been building up to, and we just get another made up universe with no stakes. There are a few moments towards the end that save this one, but if this is what this war will be about, this entire series will end with a whimper and not with the bang we should be expecting after two years of comics.
First, probably should have read Defiant: Lore War. Oh well.
Lore has manipulated the past to carve reality in his image. A lot of my favorite characters make an appearance in this story, including but not limited to: Ben Sisko, Data, Shaxs, and Worf.
It was an intense battle to overcome Lore’s evildoing and return reality to its original settings.
I'm sure this comic is great for all the hardcore Star Trek fans out there who have seen every show and devoured all the previous books and comics. Alas, I'm not one of them, and therefore found this a very hard story to get into - I basically didn't understand what was going the whole time I was reading. I liked the art style but would have wished for more of an introduction or recap.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley who were kind enough to provide me with an ARC.
