When Alex's idyllic past starts to slip like sand through her fingers, will one summer be enough to calm the waters of her unsettled heart and bridge the ocean between bygone days and the present?
Alexandria Henry’s childhood was nothing short of a dream—a huge extended family, three best friend cousins, and a yearly beach vacation filled with family Olympics, crab hunts, talent shows, and tiny boxes of cereal. It’s no wonder then, that at twenty-one, she’s struggling to let go of the past.
Desperate to preserve her family’s history and sort through unresolved feelings for a boy she hasn’t seen in years, she packs up for the summer to document the island she and her cousins grew up on together.
But when she runs into Jude Alford—a long lost friend and the quiet younger brother of her teenage crush—and starts recreating her childhood traditions with him, she begins to wonder if what lies ahead could be as beautiful as the memories she holds so close. Will a handful of sunny weeks, a Carolina beach, and a friend with a past he’d rather forget, be what Alex needs to make peace with the future and finally move forward? Or will she remain stuck on an island of her own fear and loneliness?
Rachel Lawrence writes stories and poetry about the everyday joys and challenges of life, love, and choosing the perfect snack food for every occasion. She draws inspiration from her experience growing up in a huge family in the Carolinas and having her views expanded by new friends and family she’s met along the way, both at home and across the ocean. Seashells and Other Souvenirs is her debut novel. Rachel is a wife, mom, and lover of inside jokes. She plays Christmas music year round.
I’ve discovered that if I am stressed and worn out, a very low stakes romcom is something that relaxes me. I saw this was a debut novel by an author in adjacent circles to me, so I grabbed this on KU when it released and it did the trick.
Just so you know, this beachside romance about a girl from a big family of cousins figuring out what’s next in her life has about the lowest stakes you can have in a novel, so if you are looking for angst or a twisty plot, look elsewhere.
Things I really liked:
The New Adult genre is a strange new beast, but something I liked about this romance was that the characters legitimately felt 20-something. They are adjusting to making decisions that will shape the rest of their lives. That can be quite scary in your 20s! In many ways, you still feel and react like a teenager, but you are learning to behave as an adult. Lawrence captured this well.
Mental health. I appreciated the treatment of mental health issues as a normal part of life. The book’s most appealing character has depression, and deals with it in an admirable way by going to therapy and being open about it with his friends, and it doesn’t ever put a dent in his appeal.
Little Women references. Listen, I am always here for those. I have four kids with names from that book, and my surname is Baehr. My favourite line in the book was probably, “Just so you know, you were both our Lauries.”
(I will say as someone who married someone who lived on the other side of the world, I did want to give the FMC a little shake at one point for classifying a three hour drive as “a long-distance relationship.”)
All the best to Lawrence on her debut novel, I hope it finds its ideal audience!
How do you navigate when the North Star is hidden? When your people scatter and your reference point disappears?
I loved Rachel’s flash fiction and was so stoked when I saw she was publishing her debut novel. I was prepared to love Seashells and Other Souvenirs (SaOS); however, it absolutely blew me out of the water! I received an ARC copy of this book and enjoyed it so much I had to share! 😊 (This review is voluntary and my honest opinion) (Warning, minor spoilers may be ahead)
I started this book knowing it was a clean romance. When I saw that Alex (the FMC) was sharing a house with Jude (the MMC), I was a little concerned that it might contain more content than I thought. However, this delightful story remained absolutely clean, pure, and sweet.
In the beginning, I thought, “SaOS wears its heart on its sleeve. It’s sweetly predictable.” Boy, was I wrong! I was not prepared for the character development. As the book goes on, the characters' internal struggles are revealed. When these characters have struggles, they don’t resolve them in one sentence. They work hard, fall, and stand back up again and again. Because Rachel didn’t avoid the pain and process of growth, Alex and Jude (as well as the other characters) feel so real. They are so multidimensional!
And you can’t ignore the quotes! I recorded over a dozen in my commonplace book 😊 Here’s a few for your enjoyment (while trying to avoid spoilers 😂): “I think that's when the idea started taking root in my heart that I didn't have to be perfect or fixed before I could show up for other people. That everyone has their own wounds, and maybe we were made to hurt and heal side by side. To walk with each other through this life that's so, so hard but can be so good too. To witness one another's redemption stories."
"But it's a special occasion! We should do something special." "See, that's what I've been trying to tell you. Just being with you makes everything special. I just want to spend time with you."
In SaOS, love is not one picturesque evening. Instead, it’s loving every day through all the battles and wounds.
And that’s only the romance element! Seeing Alex relive childhood memories will cause you to fondly reminisce about your own past. You’ll yearn to give her a big hug and laugh with her, and then sit down and eat cheese together in a pillow fort.
Another unexpected surprise were the poems tucked into many of the chapters. There is something about poetry that can say/reinforce what prose can not. The poetry and literary allusions tie this book together. The Little Women references truly bring out more depth ❤️ If you enjoyed Little Women and Pride and Prejudice, you will love this book!
I’ll leave you with one last poetic quote: “Why is it that the things we could never live without Are the things we could never hope to have full control over: The Sun The Sea The ones we love Our own hearts?”
Lawrence’s debut is a breath of fresh sea air! Seashells and other Souvenirs is a cozy story about first crushes, deep relationships, and the devotion of family. With past events meshing seamlessly into the present, we are reminded of the nostalgic beauty of childhood and how it forms us as adults, and how remembering and moving forward can sometimes go hand in hand. A delightfully funny and sweet beach read full of heart, sand, and endearing characters everyone will fall in love with!
This might be the first contemporary romance book I've read and now I'm afraid that it's raised the bars a bit high for contemporary romances and fantasy books I read in the future.
This book has something beautiful and true about it and I cried multiple times. The beach vibes and being friends with the neighbors next door reminded me of visiting my grandparents on their lakehouse when I was younger. The grandmama reminded me of my Nana who also used to say "you're my favorite" to each of us grandkids. The cousins and their strong friendship reminded me of my sisters and friends. And the themes! The theme of everything being right and being scared that it will just be downhill from here and of being terrified because of change... I feel that, so hard.
The heart-filled poetry and flashback memories had little seeds of truth. And, of course, the friendship to more than friendship with the two main characters was super fun and cute.
The traditions and imagination and kindness in this story were awesome (plus the mention of Lord of the Rings, Zelda, Little Women etc.) and the humor was quite fun.
I wish I could give awards to books because Seashells and Other Souvenirs should get a bunch. :) But here's my handmade award: Best Book About Beachside Family Vacations, Poetry, and Cheese
Wow, this story! I’ve never read anything quite like it. I picked it up randomly last night, and once I started, I couldn’t put it down! I was up until early morning trying to read it. Lol! The romance is a slow burn, but for once, I wasn’t rushing through it. I really appreciated how their relationship developed gradually...the little moments, the growing friendship, and the memories they created together. My favorite part? Definitely, Jude, followed by the poems. The traditions Jude and Alex shared, both old ones they reenacted and new ones they made up, were so heartwarming. The flashbacks were sweet, and as you learn how the past influenced the present, it hits you with all the feels. I definitely teared up during this one.
Alex was amazing, but Jude’s character was hard to top. Amid all the beautiful traditions and growing feelings, they also faced some tough truths, tackled past struggles, and healing together.
This was a 5-star read for me! I’m so thankful I had the chance to experience it. This romance will definitely stick with me for a while, and Jude will be taking up space in my heart. He’s the ultimate friend, and when he loves, he loves deeply.
My favorites: the poetry, hot cocoa, play forts, the shared notebook, Little Women, reading outloud, sandcastles, pirates, and boxes of memories.
-> Kissing only, No Explicit Language, ALL the feels!
Sidenote:Gives off a little of "The Summer I turned Pretty" vibes, iykyk.
I received a complimentary copy, and this review reflects my honest opinion.
Cozy contemporary romance with slow burn, friends to more—and there’s layers dealing with change and self-discovery and changing family dynamics. I smiled. I cried. I healed. The world needs more stories like this. And I loved the poetry along with the story.
This is truly my new favorite book! ❤️I’m getting a physical copy to read and re-read.
I laughed, cried, and gasped my way through this brilliant debut. Lawrence has an amazing way of crafting characters who are complex and completely endearing. I felt like I knew Alex’s heart, and by the end of the book, I was a sobbing, happy mess. Seashells and Other Souvenirs beautifully addresses the fears anyone thrust into a new chapter of life will appreciate: What if change makes us forget the people, places, and memories that formed us?
Unofficial review: I adored this book and the growth of our protagonist, Alex. She has such a tender heart that I immediately connected with. I can never quite get over how Lawrence writes such deep, important themes but manages to keep a lightness and loveliness. Her writing style is one of my absolute favourites. I was sucked in from the first page! Certain scenes had me belly-laughing, and I loved all the references to literature, video games, and of course FOOD. The romance was perfection, and even though I KNEW it had to have a happy ending, I was on the edge of my seat with anxiety at times (I count this a win). One of the final chapters made me break down into a sobbing mess with how she so perfectly tied the whole thing together in such a simple yet poignant way. And can we talk about that poetry? Not only was it beautiful, it was also pacing perfection in the plot. Highly recommend!
Release countdown reread: love. Love love love love!
Jude is such an absolute cutie patootie, and he's reason enough for y'all to read this book. 😂 But really it's so wholesome and sweet and made me nostalgic for a summer that I never had. The tension isn't ever too high, the camaraderie between the cast is so lovely, and I had a wonderful time with it. 4.5 stars from me!
**I received a copy of this book from the publisher. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.**
This was SO cute. I love the family vibes, the beach setting, the adorable romance, the cheese (obviously I loved the cheese). I am craving a big beach getaway now with all my relations and mourning the fact that Illinois is so far from the ocean.
Rachel Lawrence has a way of crafting words—both in poetry and prose—to make you feel like you’re sinking into a hug on a familiar beach. Nowhere else is that more obvious than in Seashells & Other Souvenirs! The way she weaves the plot through past, present, and poetry is magnificent, and the story it tells is exactly the kind of romance I adore: slow-burn friends-to-lovers with beautiful moments wrapped in a sweet plot. These are characters you’ll want to carry with you like your own little literary souvenirs. This book is for all the folklore girls, those who relate to Jo March, and who see the world in nostalgia-tinged glasses. I will be reading everything Rachel Lawrence writes!
I read this book as an ARC and I loved every moment of it. It centers around 21-year-old Alex, trying hold on to her family’s beach vacation traditions. She runs away to the beach for the summer and runs back into Jude, the younger brother of the boys next door.
This book was so good. It centers around family, friendship, love, steadfastness. It was funny and sweet, but also tackled how we maneuver adulthood and the past and present and change. A clean romance beach read. I highly recommend it!
This book will definitely be one I reference as I move forward with my own Contemporary YA novel.
I was so happy to get an early copy of Rachel's book! This book spoke to my heart on so many levels. Normally a sweet romance like this would take me several weeks to read. I finished in less than two days. I loved everything about it; from the romance, to the unique traditions, and of course all the nods to Little Women (I LOVE Little Women). But I'd have to say my favorite aspect of this book were the poems at the beginning of the chapters. Lawrence is a master poet, and it means a lot when a two line poem can bring me to tears. It was a story I didn't know I needed until the last words were read and I was left with that feeling of wanting to hug the book to my chest.
I had the privilege of reading an early copy of this fantastic story.
Lawrence captures the elusive and intangible magic of childhood memories and weaves an unforgettable story of family, the aches and joys of growing up, and the unforgettable adventure of finding a life you can love again.
As sweet and fun as it is poignant, Seashells and Other Souvenirs is a story you will want to come back to again and again.
I think out of all the books I've read so far this year, this one surprised me the most...surprised me in how much I loved it. I just binged the last 60% on a short road trip today (thank you anti-motion sickness glasses for making it so I could read in the car, haha!) It's not the usual type of book that becomes one of my favorites (I'm a fantasy/fairytale girl usually), but I can absolutely say that this is now a new favorite and I will be buying a physical copy and reading it again...and again.
From the very start the storytelling and characters captured me immediately, and the book was filled with so much heart. It was like a Hallmark movie, but one of the ones that pulls on your heartstrings. It made me feel so nostalgic and summery...and I wish I had an annual beach trip with family and tons of fun traditions every year now! The story was emotional, charming, beautiful, and filled with lovely poetry as well. When I got to the author's note at the end, it made so much sense that a lot of the story was based off of her own experiences. It felt very personal, in the best way.
Fans of Little Women, Pride and Prejudice and Lord of the Rings will LOVE the references to these beloved stories interspersed throughout the book. It made me smile so much every time I came across one. Oh, and a Star Wars reference too...yes, please!
Okay, but the absolute BEST part of the book was Jude. I loved his character from the moment he was first came onto the page, and that never changed once through the whole book. He's kind, caring, and a perfect gentleman. He's one of my new favorite book characters for sure. Seriously, read this book so you will understand what I mean!
Overall, if you couldn't tell already, I loved this book. 😊
Content: no language, kisses only (non-detailed, only described emotionally), one character says "surrender your booty, my lady" as a joke when they are coming up with pirate pickup lines.
I received a free digital copy of this book through the Quill and Flame Ink Team. The review is my own, honest opinion.
This was such an adorable story that completely swept me off my feet! From the very first chapter, I was pulled into the warmth of the beach town and the nostalgia of summer traditions. As a teacher, I instantly connected with the FMC. The pacing was perfect—quick, breezy chapters that made it nearly impossible to put down. I also enjoyed the poetry spotted throughout the novel.
I absolutely loved Alex and Jude. Their connection felt so real and heartfelt, and I was fully invested in their rekindled friendship and slow-burn romance. The traditions they shared—rainy-day forts, late-night cheesy snacks, Christmas in July—were charming and meaningful. Jude was also the perfect golden retriever MMC: loyal, kind, and absolutely lovable.
I loved this book and hope to see everyone reading it on the beach this summer!
Expect childhood flashbacks, summer love, cousin bonds, and cozy beach vibes in this heartwarming read.
I’m so glad I picked it up!
Note: I received an advance reader copy of Seashells and Other Souvenirs in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
The sweetest, cutest New Adult beach romance I could possibly imagine. I just adored Alex and Jude together so much, and I love when I have the chance to root for characters all throughout the book. I was a little nervous at the beginning when they become housemates, but this book did such a wonderful job of never straying into spicy territory when it would have been so easy to do. Jude is an A+, green flag guy. All the vignettes and poems were interwoven really well and added to the overall story. Definitely check this one out if you love the sound of a sweet and clean romance with a slow burn, a nerdy guy next door, and family traditions at the beach.
Such a cosy read. Think of everything that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside and this book has that, plus a thousand other sweet and heartwarming moments. The characters are interesting, well defined, and completely relatable. The romance is sweet and clean and totally adorable. Seashells and Other Souvenirs is definitely going on my list of comfort reads!
Seashells and Other Souvenirs is a curl up under a blanket, feel good, slow sizzle summer romance. This novel grabs your attention from the first chapter.
Lawrence writes from Alex’s point of view, and she seamlessly weaves past memories into present moments. Old and new traditions become part of everyday life for Alex and Jude.
From crab hunting with glow sticks to Mario Cart in a blanket fort to pirate dinners, you will want to be part of these traditions and start your own. You will feel like part of the Henry family while reading Seashells and Other Souvenirs.
Once you pick up this novel, you won’t be able to put it down. It is a beach read with nods to Little Women. And it is one I will pick up over and over again. You will too.
Seashells and other Souvenirs was so good I want to read it again like it’s the first time. I felt like the boys next door looking in on the super cool huge family next door who vacations once a year together. I wanted to join in their games and traditions and I just wanted to be a part of their family. This books made me feel all the feels I found myself quite emotional at times and giddy happy and excited. It felt like a mash up of Sumer I turned pretty and Dan in real life if you e ever saw that film. This book will make you long for the beach but maybe just maybe instead you could build a fort in your living room with snacks and blankets and just read this book in an entire day because you won’t want to put it down.

Jude + Alex
Jude the quiet younger brother of Alex’s childhood crush. Jude was so unexpected! This was a slow burn, friends to lovers! It had a strong family bond throughout also. I thought Jude was so sweet & never pushed her. He was so patient! There were times I just wanted to yell “TELL HER how you feel.” But it was all worth it in the end whenever she finally SEES him. This was a new to me Author & I thought it was such a wonderful book. It bounces from past memories to present day. Get this one added to your TBR it’s a good one!!
Favorite quotes - But the only thing I feel is contentment. Peace. The distinct impression that whatever else might be wrong at the moment, this is very, very right.
This is something stronger and much more beautiful, something far less fleeting. Like the warm glow of a fire in the hearth. Like the steady welcoming presence of a front porch light. Like coming home.
“I can’t give you the world, Al, but I can buy you tiny boxes of cereal and read to you and take you for ice cream and walks by the ocean. I’ll build you a fort every day and let you win every game if you want. I think I could make you happy if you’ll let me.”
Poetic and romantic, Seashells & Other Souvenirs shimmers with heart and hope. Filled with nostalgia, every poem and page and chapter feels as comforting as wise words from a grandmother. Soothing and insightful, it’s like the silence of a best friend or the steady, soft swell of waves upon shore. The story unfolds beautifully, reminding us that as surely as those waves come and go, or the summer sun takes its time to set, time flows ever forward and it’s up to us to treasure the beauty set before us. And like a touch of grace, Rachel shows us that while bright memories pass below the horizon, joy in this moment isn’t beyond our reach. A true delight, this story will steal your heart and then help you find it again. An absolute treasure.
Finally! I've been wishing for a book that would keep me up past my bedtime saying "Just one more chapter..." This is it! I loved this story. So sweet and heartwarming. I rarely read a novel more than once, but will revisit this one for sure. What's next Rachel Lawrence?... I'm here for it!
Well, I’m not sure I’m cut out for the romance genre. I haven’t been all that active in the category because I need more like a story with romance in the plot. Not a romance with light plot. A few things that I really struggled with are as follows:
•FMC is having an emotional moment and the MMC “sensed” it was due to menstrual cycle so he grabbed somethings to help her with it—-uhhh what if you guessed wrong dude..? The scene was just too odd. •The flashbacks were, I believe, supposed to be a collection of the good and bad of her childhood but it seemed to build to her having some traumas from it, however it’s just the personalities that most girls face in all girl environments and didn’t explain why if she was traumatized by it that she wanted to hang onto it so badly. •Jude didn’t really have much personality, besides push over people pleaser, older brother shadow dweller, and didn’t come off as being real at all. I needed a little more manly behavior from him in my opinion. And I’m sorry Little Women being his comfort read contributed to my feelings.
In the end, I am putting this book to the side and not finishing it. I’m trying to force my way through and I just can’t get there.

While I haven’t read a great deal of contemporary romance, Seashells is truly something special. I can’t remember the last time I read a book and loved ALL the characters. This story is like stepping into the family vacation I wish I had had every summer as a kid. One thing that stood out to me is the author’s depiction of emotionally healthy relationships and the value of an affirming family/community. I would so love to spend a weekend at Jude’s beach house playing Mario Kart and eating cereal! (Applejacks for the win!) In some ways, I feel like I’ll continue to return to this beach for years to come and I’m certain this is a book I will never forget.
I went into the story pretty blind, but confident that Rachel would have put together something fun. This book was SO SWEET and enjoyable! It’s a perfect summer beach read full of friends, cousins, family vacations, memory making, and an adorable love story of course. It reminded me of my childhood in so many ways which just made it all feel extra special. Loved it!
This story was filled with nostalgia and warmth. A lovely mix of looking back on the past with fondness and looking to the future with hope. I loved every part of it.
