Blade Runner 2019: The Complete Omnibus stands as a surprisingly strong expansion of the Blade Runner mythos. Written by Michael Green (co-writer of Blade Runner 2049) and Mike Johnson, it feels both faithful to the tone of Ridley Scott’s original vision and bold enough to forge its own path. The story doesn’t just mimic the films — it deepens the world, exploring new corners of Los Angeles through fresh characters and moral questions that feel right at home amid the rain and neon. Green and Johnson craft a narrative that manages to feel original while still steeped in the familiar existential gloom that defines Blade Runner. The artwork by Andres Guinaldo complements the storytelling well, striking a balance between cinematic flair and comic-book dynamism. Guinaldo’s cityscapes shimmer with the glow of holographic ads and polluted light, while his character work captures the loneliness and grit that define the series’ tone. Still, I found myself wishing for something a touch darker and grittier — the world of Blade Runner thrives on grime and shadow, and at times the art feels a bit too clean and digitally smooth. A heavier use of shadow or texture might have pushed it closer to the oppressive noir aesthetic fans love. That said, the collaboration between Green, Johnson, and Guinaldo clearly shows respect and understanding for the source material. The writing is layered, human, and occasionally philosophical — exactly what Blade Runner should be — though it’s not without flaws. A few plot points resolve themselves too neatly, leaning on convenient twists and small deus ex machina moments that undercut some of the tension. These rushed resolutions keep the omnibus from achieving true greatness. Even so, the series remains an engaging and visually appealing journey through a future that feels both alien and eerily familiar. For anyone who’s ever wanted to return to the shadowed streets of Los Angeles 2019, this collection offers a worthy, if slightly imperfect, chance to do so.

A compelling core character and a compelling core story that nicely dovetails into Bladerunner plotlines (albeit, with just a little too much assumption that the reader knows all the backstory). I did feel like the main story dragged 2-3 issues too long, with just a bit too much back-and-forth on Cleo, but there were also some magnficient standalone issues, like the one set out on the maining colony.

Glad to have finally been able to read this. The huge mishmash of Bladerunner comics had confused me before this omnibus finally came out.

Accidentally started this series with the middle chapter and still loved it. Going back and reading 2019 an it’s a wonderful start an perfectly captures the feeling of the films. Just incredible art too, one of the most beautiful sci fi series.

The action and scenery is cinematic. I found the character of Ash engrossing. This is well done.
