My favorite Sofi Laporte so far! I loved the mystery in this, and I only guessed one thing about it. It was much more complex than I anticipated. Loved it! The romance is sweet too. I love Algy. He’s so funny.

I usually enjoy this author’s stories, but this one didn’t work for me. It is a f/m historical, and the heroine has a brother and a love interest. In the end, both betrayed her badly, for the noblest of reasons, of course, but I was so furious at them both, I couldn’t like the story. When you love someone (or say you love them) you don’t lie to them or manipulate them to the degree displayed in this book. Both men showed such profound disrespect for the heroine, such disregard for her intelligence and her emotional well-being, I wanted to spit in their faces and inflict unspeakable pain on their clueless MALE bodies and souls. The misogynistic cads! I hated them. Of course, I disliked the book, especially in the end, when the heroine forgave them both. I wouldn't be able to.

Lady Isla and the Lord of Rogues by Sofi Laporte is a page turning regency full of unexpected moments, cheeky banter, and laughter all the way.

I don’t know how the author does it, but I think I have a new favorite book. I felt like this book was effortless to read, I slipped right into the lives of the characters with no difficulty and I loved every single one of them from start to finish. The author created so many jaw dropping situations, laugh out loud situations, I couldn’t help but rush into this book. The author always does a great job at setting your expectations to be something, and then dropping a piano straight on top of your head. I was so proud of myself while reading, that I guessed what was going on but boy, was I so wrong at where the story was heading.

The banter was sooo entertaining and funny, the antics of the characters and the thinking process of Isla was just perfect. I loved her loyalty and dedication to everything the FMC did, especially to her family and friends. I can’t say anything about the MMC since that would be a huge spoiler, but he was to DIE. FOR. Goshhhhhhhhhhh.

If you want just a good regency book, I highly recommend this book and every other book by Sofi Laporte.

Thank you Sofi Laporte for the free book.

A thoroughly enjoyable read with very endearing characters who are easy to fall in love with. She loves a boy she can not forget, is falling in love with a sweetheart of a man, and fascinated with a dangerous rogue. Amusing, witty, with an intriguing mystery and completely hard to put down!

I received an ARC of this book and leaving my review voluntarily.

Too much

I loved the first half of this book. But the second half and ending were too distressing. You don’t forgive being lied to by your adoptive family for your ENTIRE life in just a few months and a few conversations. I couldn’t get over it

Ah, it’s been too long since I last read a Sofi Laporte book 🤓. This one is a crazy roller coaster of intrigue and who’s who. As with many of Sofi’s books, it’s lighthearted and with a purposeful air of ridiculousness. The mysteries of Jem Fawe and Lucien Night, coupled with the fast pace and quirky dialogue, left me fully glued to the page. A thoroughly entertaining book!

There was something in the ending that gave me a twinge of disappointment. Not in the outcome or the unveiling (that was good), but… perhaps in the lack of grand gesture? I somehow felt my heart should have melted a bit more than it did… but all good 😊

As a side note, the audiobook narrator is exceptional.

Content:
There is no foul language or sex. There’s some violence, but it’s not excessive. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There is one scene with palm reading, but it’s portrayed as a probable scam. There is no mention of faith or God.

merry spinsters, charming rogues is such a fun and silly series which never fails to make me smile. although, this is the only one that i have rated this low. even though isla’s book had the authors usual charm in addition to a likable main character, the romance didn’t work for me. the way everything played out actually annoyed me by the end and i wasn’t even rooting for the main couple anymore. nonetheless, i am still anticipating the next installment!

Far fetched but a fun read.
I envisioned Jem as an older brother figure to Isla throughout the whole book so it was hard to reconcile him as a love interest. I liked Teddy though. 🤷
The way they all messed with her life and lied to her makes me think she will not be mentally okay. Not very romantic or brotherly.

Isla has never forgotten her childhood friend Jem, who promised to meet her again after she left the orphanage but never did. And it's not for want of looking on her part. But when an expedition into St Giles ends up with her 'killing' a ruffian who accosts her, only to have him vanish when she turned her back, her brother Algie declares it's time she was married. And the man who's been trying to court her for so long really does seem the ideal candidate: attentive and eager to serve, he'll be able to assist her quest. But when, as a second string to her bow, she seeks out the king of the underworld, she finds she's bitten off more than she can chew. Torn between two men, with a third in her past, can she lay the past to rest and find true happiness, or has she left it too late?

A great book, with some amazing twists and turns that kept me eagerly turning pages for way too long. Some of the twists I guessed, others were a complete surprise, and the result was a wonderful story that may be my favourite in the series so far. (Or maybe not - maybe I just love this in a different way...) Poor Isla has a serious roller-coaster in front of her, but part of it is her own fault for her refusal to ever give up, so maybe one shouldn't feel too sorry for her. At the same time, I'm glad she had her umbrella! I'd love to say more but most things would give away spoilers of some sort, so all I'll say is that I loved the characters, the plot kept me guessing in the best of ways, and the ending was deeply satisfying. All in all, a great read - recommended.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

MY JAW DROPPED, and I still can’t pick it up from the floor…

My eyes devoured this book as quickly as they possibly could—I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. At times, I had to physically restrain myself from flipping ahead, desperately searching for the answers I wanted. Sofi Laporte is always a must-read for me. While there have been books of hers I’ve loved more than others, every single one promises a good ride—and always delivers.

This book SHOCKED me. I usually predict every single twist long before it happens, but that was not the case here. There were several turns I absolutely did not see coming—and I FREAKING LOVED THEM. It’s been so long since a romance novel left me completely speechless, but this one did exactly that.
I loved Isla—her strength, curiosity, and stubbornness had me cheering for her every step of the way. She was truly put through the wringer, so I was thrilled she got her happily ever after. There were a few things I would have liked to see (especially more developments after certain revelations), but overall, the journey was incredible. I found myself pacing my living room, screaming into my pillow, and questioning my sanity—all great signs when reading a book, in my opinion.

I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a gripping story with a sweet romance that makes you second-guess who you’re rooting for.

The most important men in Isla 's life both betray her horribly. And neither is even sorry! They're sorry she's hurt, but don't regret anything. They don't promise things will be better, the love interest doesn't promise she's his priority now or that his loyalty is now hers. Nope, just "hopefully you'll understand" type of thing. It made me so mad. Her brother... years of lying, causing continual heartbreak, and not sorry. The love interest, just betrayal and a misplaced sense of "absolute loyalty" to the brother, says he'd do it all the same again. ugh

I want to give this three stars, because it had so much potential. But it missed the mark. If they'd brought her in on it earlier, they still could have accomplished their mission, but without so much betrayal!! Ugh I want to hit them both. And she just forgives them. No groveling, no real apologies even. It's just sad. They went too far in their betrayal.

This is the last installment (so far) of unrelated sweet regency romance stories involving a youngish spinster and a not-so-roguish rogue. As in all the previous books, the tone is eminently lighthearted and there's some deception or false identity plot that leads to some madcap adventure with a happy ending. The story was entertaining, although I didn't enjoy it as much as some other books in the series, perhaps because the deception was too convoluted, perhaps because the rogue's dual personalities weren't totally convincing, perhaps because it has some darker/sadder passages or, perhaps, simply because I wasn't in the right mood. In any case, it was worth reading it and I'll be looking forward to reading more novels by the same author.

A fun, cute read. She is an orphan who has spent her life looking for her lost orphan brother. Her brother is a high-up in British politics. He presses her to marry and she agrees to accept the handsome Teddy who loves clocks. But the search for the brother goes on, bringing her danger, intrigue and surprises. The story as a hive change from the typical Regency romance, but although I loved Teddy, I thought the plot twist at the end was not just unconvincing, but rather cruel. I enjoy this writer’s style and characters, but this one as not a success for me because of the far-fetched and unfeeling ending.

This was a well written story, but it’s not my favorite in the Merry Spinsters, Charming Rogues series. I don’t want to give spoilers away, so let’s just say I didn’t care for any of the main characters but I did like the twists and turns of the plot. I found the FMC’s background interesting, in spite of my dislike of her, and wish I could have learned more about her childhood history.

Light inconsequential reading. I vaguely remember that this book was entertaining. But I had to read the spoilers from reviews to remember the storyline. I'd read more of this author's books, they were cute, clean, and fun. Perfect for listening to while doing puzzles, walking, or on a drive.

Cute. This whole series is kind of about mistaken identities. Kind of running out of ways to tell this same story. 😬 This one, in particular, seemed unnecessarily unkind to the heroine.

surprisingly good

The story starts out feeling a little silly, though entertaining. However, as the plot progresses, we see Isla become a more well defined character. The transition is seamless, and I began to like her more.

The story is exciting: it’s hard to know what is going on, and as time progresses, Isla and the reader are both confused by what she sees, what she thinks, and then confused some more when new information appears and it’s hard to know what’s really going on. For all the changes, it does not really feel convoluted… But the unknown is forever plaguing Isla and her mind never stops trying to figure out what is happening.

Some of what we read seems to point to obvious revelations to come, but as another reader commented, there is certainly a huge twist at the end.

The only difficulty that I had with the story was Isla‘s ability to process everything that she learns to bring the story to its conclusion. I don’t know that I could have behaved as well as she does.

This is definitely a book that is full of surprises and exciting.

When I was a kid and used to go to the food store with my mom, I always ended up in front of the book section and was able to buy a book every once in a while, especially cause they weren’t so expensive back then. And I have been in mind of a character called Jack Midnight in a book I read and loved… Which I lent out and never got back. This character was very much like Lucian‘s character. And I was very excited to see that someone had finally written a book which evoked a similarly mysterious and complex character like Jack Midnight in its pages.

I enjoyed the book. I thought it was well written, and that while it started on wobbly feet, it developed into a well constructed tale. The characterizations are good, and the pacing of the plot is excellent. I believe that the story will be well received by most who read it if you can get past the first couple of chapters.

The question that sticks with me: is there truly such a fine line between a hero and a villain? And what happens when that line blurs? The author does a decent job with this. But I still feel Isla is much better at handling the situation than I would be. An interesting experience for me, especially with a character I come to like so much. Is her response realistic? This would make an excellent book for discussion in a group, with regard to that point in particular.

-Lady Isla and the Lord of Rogues, is a delightfully intriguing clean regency story that will quite literally plunge dear Isla into a thrilling fast-paces and unexpected world of secrets and intrigue...and of course, an unexpected beautiful romance. It’s precisely filled with muddle, mayhem, and a charming love story filled with mistaken identities, forbidden attractions, sizzling banter, and many layers upon layers of an unexpected and surprising twisting plot. I loved the loyalty and devotion of dear characters to people that matter most. Just when I thought I had figured out all the clues, I was led to an unexpected conclusion that left my heart sighing with content and satisfaction. Beautiful themes of devotion, curiosity, patience, devotion, and forgiveness shine bright. My friends, this dear story is worth the read!📚🙌🏻❤️

Another wonderful regency with so much banter, hidden identities and even a touch of danger as our FMC desperately tries to find her childhood friend in the dangerous parts of London. This book is part of a series Merry Spinsters, Charming Rogues where each story is a stand alone.

The book takes off when Lady Isle is searching through the dark alleyways of St Giles, the roughest part of London. When a man tries to grab her, she fights back with her pointed umbrella tip. As he falls to the ground he hits his head and she believes she has killed him. With her brother, Algernon Clyde, Lord Wynthorpe, involved in the Home Office and a leading politician in Parliament, he would know what to do with the body that she has taken home and left on her bed.

Algie understands what drives Isle to do the crazy things she gets herself involved in, while searching for Jem Fawe, her childhood friend. Her loyalty to her friend's memory will have her agree to an engagement to Lord Linwood. He is a quirky character who loves to discuss clocks- how they work, the history of famous clock makers, he will go into their smallest details. Having a fiance will allow him to escort her to the places that have been closed to her. Maybe she can even have a conversation with the elusive Lord of the London Underworld, Lucian Night. He may be the man able to help her find her long lost friend.

Without going into any other details this book will drag you into layers upon layers of a twisting plot. This author will lead you to another unexpected conclusion that will leave you happy and satisfied.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

As with any Sofi Laporte book this tale was truly a treat for the senses. I absolutely LOVED the brilliant beginning (SO funny!) and her brother Algie's reactions when Isla thought she'd killed a man were hilarious - seriously, who is THAT unphased? I felt like I could see every dingy alley and fancy house, felt Isla's distress when she worried about what to do after more than one disaster and laughed out loud when she took it upon herself to dress up as a man and visit a gambling hell in order to talk to Lucian Night. The twist at the end was just perfect (and exactly the conclusion I hoped for) and all in all I loved every single word (I did feel sorry for the two men when Lady Isla refused to forgive them for their necessary deception for a time, but I'm glad it all worked out in the end.) Sofi's writing is so evocative that you can literally smell, taste and hear everything she's describing and I really do think it's impossible to be unchanged when you finish one of her books. And not only that, but each book seems to be better than the last - how does she DO that? I loved the settings in Lady Isla and the Lord of Rogues, which were more often than not in the poorer areas of London as opposed to a ballroom, and the depth of each character's backstory and the mystery aspect, which led to an amazing conclusion. This is part of a series but can absolutely be read as a standalone.
On a side note, I often get asked for recommendations when it comes to good books and when I mention Regency Sofi is at the top of my list! Her books are entertaining, historically accurate and absolutely brilliant in every way!

As a child, Lady Isla survived a horrible carriage accident that killed her parents. She was taken in by a Romani (Gypsy) family in which she was loved and cared for. She worshiped the son of that family, Jem, and followed him around. She learned the Romani language. All went well, until it didn’t, and both children wound up in an orphanage. Isla fared well and was adopted. Unfortunately, she neve knew what happened to Jem, and searched for him as best she could, with no success.

Lord Thaddeus Linwood has taken a fancy to Lady Isla. He goes out of his way to court her. Almost no one knows that he also has a secret. When Isla discovers part of that secret though, things can get dicey for both of them.

This was a delightful tale of young love, lost love, and true love. It’s about adoption, secrets, espionage, family, and friendship. It offers a look at the criminal underworld of Regency England.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was interesting and entertaining. The characters were lovely. I especially loved Teddy and how gentle and nerdy he was; how all he wanted to do was please Isla.

If you enjoy Regency romances with a touch of mystery, with a touch of cloak and dagger, I think you’ll enjoy this book. I recommend it.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

♬ (Audiobook Review)

I can't talk about my thoughts without basically spoiling the entire thing (though I think the plot twists were easy to guess), so there's the warning before you proceed.

Honestly I could have done without Jem entirely. If it was just about Linwood and Lucien Night I think it would have been far more interesting and all the lying would make more sense without the backstory with Jem because it would be understandable to hide the truth from her since she wasn't originally attached to either persona.

In fact, wouldn't it have been better if they were all just separate people? Imagine Teddy and Lala getting into trouble together to try to capture Lucien Night, doesn't that sound fun? Because I enjoyed Teddy's character. He was like a breath of fresh air in the male lead category, naive and clumsy but lovable. Then to find out he's just... not that person? I mean I already knew his disguise, it was obvious, but the entire time I felt like it was a shame that he was putting on a front, especially because Isla fell in love with him AS Teddy. I liked the idea of her getting engaged to this silly little man for convenience, with no one expecting her to get attached (not even herself) and then she does!

I could rant a bit more, there are other things that bothered me about this book, but I'll hold myself back. In the end, there were quite a few things I enjoyed, but it fizzled out in the end with the whole 'reveal'.

Lady Isla is in a dangerous game. She needs the lord of the underworld to help her find Jem, the Romani boy who saved her life when she was an orphan long ago. But Lucien Night, the lord of the underworld, makes a scandalous proposition if she wants his help.

Meanwhile, her adopted older brother, a scheming politician with a charming socially awkward side, is encouraging her to marry Lord Thaddeus Linwood (or Teddy, as Isla calls him). The bespectacled Lord Linwood is obsessed with clocks, and although he seems steady enough, Isla is sure she doesn’t love him…or does she? Soon, Isla finds herself in too deep as she tries to navigate finding Jem, holding Lucien at bay, and enjoying Teddy’s company…but is anyone who he truly says he is in this world of secrets?

This Regency romance was a fun adventure although it wasn’t my favorite of the series. The plot felt less cohesive than most of Sofi Laporte’s books, and I don’t love it when heroines behave “missish” after they’ve been tricked by someone who has their best interests at heart. But Lord Linwood was delightful, Lady Isla's mysterious past unfolded with great suspense, and the secondary romance with Isla's friend and her adopted brother was cute. All in all, Lady Isla is a grand romp through a fictional Regency world.

The story opens in the middle of a confrontation, in which Lady Isla, our heroine, is defending herself. This is not exactly the opening one expects from a romance set in the nineteenth century, but then nothing is ever as one expects from this charming and diverting series, and that is a good thing. (I adore the unexpected!) Isla has long been searching for a friend from her childhood, and continues the pursuit of this quest even though it takes her to questionable locations and the company of even more questionable people. Not surprisingly, she finds herself in one scrape after another. The author, witty and wily as ever, leaves clues along the way to entice the alert reader as we follow Isla along on her merry (and sometimes not-so-merry) quest. The twisty threads of the plot are placed skillfully and with great precision, resulting in an engrossing and most satisfying reading experience. This is my honest opinion after reading an ARC. I thoroughly enjoyed this latest installment of the Merry Spinsters, Charming Rogues series, heartily recommend it, and am looking forward to more!

Whereas the other books in the series were more lighthearted and generally involved false identities and lost threads in the personal lives of the protagonists, this one takes a darker turn. Be warned that there is deliberate deception - for undeniably noble reasons, but nonetheless grievous. In fact, I am not absolutely certain that such profound deception was necessary until the absolute end. On the other hand, a natural ending of this story would be the resolution of the trickery followed by forgiveness (and cuddling behind the scenes). So, the mere structure of the novel requires prolonged offense.

The Lord of Rogues is by far more memorable than Lady Isla. She is resourceful and dedicated. He is drawn with more care for shading. I admit having a soft spot for competent heroes (and heroines) competently playing incompetents. It's like the hapless Turnip as embodied by the incomparable Verity Lark (A Lark's Flight).

I can't wait for the next installment!

Sofi's books are pure and simply fun to read.I laugh, I cry, and I close the book satisfied at yet another happy ending when all secrets are out in the open and all is made right. This book is full of twists and turns and while things some were hinted at and you could guess, I still was left surprised at the end of the book. Each book of her's I always think that THIS book should be made into a movie, because it's just so good and entertaining. There are a lot of books in this genre that you have to wonder if they're clean or what content is going to be in them. Sofi cleverly writes her stories with so much humor, wit and twists that you don't even notice that you're reading a "clean read" and you just enjoy it for all that it is. You don't need any other elements to make it appealing- it does that all on its own. Her stories are for everyone and yet I don't feel anything missing and I think that's the hallmark of a great writer. I can't wait for more stories to come. I'm here for anything Sofi Laporte writes!

Oh I really enjoyed this book. Sofie Laporte writes my kind of catnip - sweet and light romances full of hidden identities. This was no exception. Isla is desperate to reconnect with her childhood friend, which leads her to discover the dangerous world of St Giles and its underlord. Meanwhile, she's being courted by Teddy, a rather boring but sweet gentleman.

I loved Isla's relationship with her brother who always seems to feeding her delicious homecooked meals despite his demanding job. I also loved Teddy and Isla's romance. His obsession with clocks is really endearing. Isla has a lovely friendship with Catherine, a secondary character I also liked. The ending is explosive as usual in this series - I guessed almost the entire thing because I've read the other five books but it was still thrilling.

My endless thanks to the author for this ARC!
