This was definitely a solid devotional to read through the year. It takes you through Matthew and John, and Peterson always has challenging insights for the passages. Reading all the way through these gospels again with Peterson reminds you (in a good way) that sometimes, you put Jesus in a box a bit. You always need to go back and read it for yourself to get that full picture of Jesus, who never fits into the boxes we fashion for him.

The reason for the four stars is the format. It just felt kind of confusing to switch to the second gospel mid-way through the year. I would have preferred that it would match up to the church calendar, or that you would work your way through the earlier parts of both gospels and then build toward the climax at the end of the calendar year in both gospels. This just sort of felt arbitrary.

But I would still encourage others to make use of this book like I did.

I enjoyed lingering over small passages of interactions with Jesus throughout Matthew and John. It took me a year and a half but worth the journey with Jesus and Eugene Peterson...one of my favorite and most respected authors.

Simple daily readings through most of Matthew and John. Peterson includes a few thoughts/comments and an application oriented prayer each day.
I enjoyed the rootedness this provided.

I love Eugene Peterson. This book has daily readings through the books of Matthew and John with a short statement or two to ponder and a prayer. It's a good way to embrace quiet and time with God.

Each daily reading is very short. A scripture, followed by a reflective point, followed by a prayer. Some reflective moments were incredibly shallow while others hit me very deeply.
