Like it or not, it's fight or flight when it comes to love and legacy.
Professor Magdalena Martín needs to find a man—or at least find out why he disappeared in the sixteenth century. Research leads her from Spain to picturesque Puerto Rico. Accustomed to being a team of one, she finds herself working alongside a too-charming-for-his-own-good fellow historian who proves to be an unfortunately distracting necessity.
The last thing Rico Morales expected when he left Wall Street was to end up going on a wild-goose chase with a snooty academic. Can't a man aimlessly search for his life's purpose in peace? His loose itinerary did not include bantering through a genealogical investigation with a captivating colleague—or grappling with their undeniable connection.
'Lena' is on a singular mission to solve this career-defining mystery and return to her life in Salamanca. Yet the more time she spends with Rico, the more she falls for the enchanting island and his smoldering smile. When they're together, possibilities hum. Like the possibility of something that would stand the test of time—if only she were the sort to stay.
First in the Los Morales series, "Shall I Stay" is an opposites-attract, witty contemporary romance with swoony kisses only and no swearing. Extra dose of yearning tension included.
Nuria Muñoz picked up Pride and Prejudice in the ninth grade and thought she had discovered little-known author Jane Austen. At the time there was no one in her small-town Puerto Rico sphere with whom to gush about her love of love stories (especially those with a groveling grump).
Fast forward to an English degree, marriage to her childhood-bully-turned-best-friend, and living her homeschool-mom best life with four incandescently amazing children in Florida, Nuria found her people in the Bookstagram community. She now writes her own Kissing Only romances with all the swoon and wit.
All the opposites-attract romcom goodness set in Puerto Rico, throw in a genealogical mystery too https://amzn.to/4qMqcOT
This author thinks she’s so sneaky. We can see you. We can see you reeling us in with your promises of a Caribbean balmy breeze of escapist romance. We can see you contriving a literal hurricane of forced proximity to pair up a buttoned-up, ambitious historian with attachment issues and a floral-button-down charmer hero with abandoment issues. No wonder the amount of achy yearning was borderline excessive. And speaking of yearning, we can see you wanting to hijack our salivary glands with all your heavenly Puerto Rican food descriptions. All I have is an Uncrustable on hand. Now what?
And, we get it: Puerto Ricans hit both the genetic and cultural jackpot, must be nice with their luscious hair, heart-thumping music, and repressed colonialism/multi-racial identity crisis. This family was like a walking overbearing warm hug. Now I need to buy a set of dominoes to play by kerosene lamplight and learn to salsa dance. I have enough on my plate.
Oh yeah, and they just happen to have a centuries-old mystery to solve? We see you sneaking in all that history and genealogy nerding out with those themes of heritage and legacy. The longing for home and belonging. Very unsubtle. Fine—effective. *something in my eye*
We see you taking us right there with them on their research wild goose chase, bilingual-bantering and slowburning, and as their hearts soften and intertwine, so that when we reach the end, the overdose of happily-ever-after warm fuzzies builds up to concerning levels. We see you getting readers so invested in the endearingly overbearing Moraleses that they can’t wait to go back to Puerto Rico and see who falls in love next and whether there will also be chickens involved.
Read if you like your romance escapist and achingly tender with all the wit and swoon and a side of crispy fried tostones.
Content notes: Kissing Only. No swearing. Mild themes of parental abandonment and childhood emotional neglect.
(Reviewing one’s own book and it came out grumpy and like “So you loved it or your resent it?”😆)
If you like sweet, kisses-only, low stakes grumpy-sunshine romance with a tropical storm for forced proximity where the lonely FMC falls in love with the MMC’s *whole family* (a la While You Were Sleeping)…I don’t see how you could fail to love this.
I’ll be honest, I’m not a dedicated romance reader. I do enjoy a fun romance, especially on a sick day when I need a light read, but most of the time I prefer my romance as a subplot. I’m not dissing the feels, I just really love it when the romance supports the main plot or is kind of subtextual and something I get to look forward to, nestled into the main story.
So what made this book satisfying to me was the fact that one of the characters is the setting, Puerto Rico. And as I was reading it and soaking up the vicarious balmy breezes and cultural joy, I realised that I had a subliminal picture in my head of this place as a place people leave.
Which is ironic, given that I also live on an island people leave—Tasmania. Historically, Tasmania has been a place that young people abandon for employment opportunities, but come back to for lifestyle reasons and to raise a family. I’m also in an international marriage, so for these reasons, I found myself identifying with some of the cultural issues in a way that I never expected (including the history nerdery of the main characters).
If only we had their food—I guess that’s the downside to being colonised by England instead of Spain!
I went to give this book 4 stars, then I realised there isn’t anything that I thought needed to be different or better. Everything about this debut novel is astonishingly professional, from the prose and dialogue to every detail of the publishing presentation.
I expect it to find a big audience of satisfied readers, and I’m definitely on board to read about the rest of the Morales family and their beautiful island.
This is a book that you will read with a smile on your face from the first page to the last 😊 (or at least I did). It's full of warmth and heart. I enjoyed that the setup was somewhat unique, combining genealogical research nerdiness (in the best way) with an immersive visit to Puerto Rico... heat, humidity, food, dancing all included. It was a sweet, low-drama read with characters that are easy to love. Felt like it fit right in with all the best classic rom-coms you could think of. An ideal escape (especially in the middle of a very cold winter!). I am ready to read whatever Nuria gives us next--which means, of course, a sequel!!
Federico Morales, formerly working in finance on Wall Street, is now living with his abuela and sisters and helping out with the family tour business in Puerto Rico. He's great at what he does but is just drifting through life, always with the feeling that he must prove himself worthy.
Magdalena Martín is a genealogical research professor from Spain. She has emotional walls built thick, strong, and very tall. She travels to Puerto Rico to hunt for answers to a mystery she is trying to solve for a client.
As Rico and Lena work together to complete the research project, both Rico's and the island's charm slowly work to soften Lena's heart and break through her armor, while Rico tries to be brave enough to risk being abandoned again.
Oh, my. What a lovely story! Lena's armor is so tough that even I, the reader, couldn't see the real her until nearly halfway through the book. But it was so worth it!! I adored Rico's family, the beautiful descriptions of the island, and the food! I can't tell you how badly I want to go to Puerto Rico now. I almost feel like I already have, just a tiny bit.
I love how Nuria Muñoz saves me from going into Swoon Overload by slipping in a good laugh. Who knew comic relief could be used to break up incredible swooniness? My emotions were all over the place. I really enjoyed Alonso's story within a story, too. And the chickens! LOL
Thank you for allowing me to be on the ARC team! I'm (im)patiently waiting for the next installment of this new series. (And I totally called it when that certain someone was brought into the story that he was going to be next! Squeeee!)
A book about researchers? Set in a place I'd love to visit? Tracking down information? Sign me up for it. I loved getting to know Rico and Lena and seeing them get to know each other as well. I love that their backstories were revealed one tantalising piece after another, and the way they realised that they were into each other???? *chef's kiss* I loved the book, want to read more about the Morales Family, but I feel like I wanted more longing and more yearning from Rico. He didn't have a chance to make my heart flutter, to make me squeal and wish that I was Lena, but he did say so many memorable things that I might think of putting one or two of them on a shirt or a tote.
After I read The Super Big Favor, I knew I would read anything else Nuria wrote.
Her first full-length novel did NOT disappoint! 👏🏼 It involves trying to put down roots, solving a mystery, finding love, growing from pain, taking risks, and more. 💛 There were serious challenges but also great humor throughout. I really enjoyed that this was heavily in Rico’s point of view.
The genealogy and cultural history aspects were so interesting!
Rico’s abuela and sisters were a fun and heartwarming part of the story. I can’t wait to read about them more in the next books.
I was honored to read an early copy. Preorder this one for only $2.99! It comes out Jan. 28th! Add some happiness and warmth to your winter. 🥰☀️
Should I stay? Absolutely, Yes, never leave, Federico!
Now that I’ve got that out... this story is incredible! Lena is headed to San Juan to investigate a family member of a client when she meets Rico, her research assistant. They don’t exactly click at first, but a mix of forced proximity, a storm, and shared passions gradually bring them closer. Rico is deeply connected to his family, culture, and hometown, while Lena feels trapped by any sense of being tied down—she’s shut herself off from vulnerability. Meanwhile, Rico is still figuring out what he wants next in life. Despite their differences, they become unexpectedly reliant on one another. But both are struggling with the reality that when this project ends, Lena will leave, and Rico is firmly rooted in a place he never intends to leave. The only future they can envision is if she stays...but Lena isn’t one to settle. So, they must savor their time together, each day bringing them closer to the answers they seek. Yet, it’s all bittersweet, knowing once they solve the mystery of the missing man, Lena will go. It’s a heartbreak in the making.
You guys... this story is phenomenal. The back-and-forth between Lena and Rico, the passion they share for history, their deep conversations, the mouth-watering meals they share, and Rico’s precious family. The mystery they’re investigating doesn’t just uncover answers for their case, it reveals personal insights too. Sheltering together during a storm, the constant proximity, and don’t even get me started on the first kiss. I’m telling you, there are no words for how powerful it was!
I adored this book SO much! I felt like I was right there with the Morales family, Lena, and Rico. What an extraordinary story! I can’t wait for the next one!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. This review reflects my honest opinion.
Ok Hallmark, it’s time to get your Puerto Rico on!!! ‘Cause right here is your next swoony, heartfelt, solve-the-mystery-find-your-real-treasure, irresistible love story. Nuria pulled out all the stops to entice our five senses in this sweet, and sometimes salty, romantic journey of professional and personal discovery.
I can promise you, this book will leave you salivating for some rich Puerto Rican fare, itching to don a dancing dress and heels, and wanting to buy a cute, yet highly entertaining, tote that has more personality than Robin Williams. This story will leave you with no doubt of Nuria’s deep love for this beautiful island, its history, culture, and people. The vivid descriptions of places, foods, and history, combined with the relatable family dynamic, and an intriguing mystery bringing two strangers together will captivate you from beginning to end.
Shall I Stay was a joy to read. And I have to say the traditional Hispanic goodbye tour is a lot like the Hillbilly tour, iykyk.
Go read this one! Thank you @nuria.munoz.writes for the advanced copy. And congratulations my friend!
Before I even started reading, the famous Elvis tune…
🎶 Shall I Stay? Would it be a sin? For I can’t help falling in love with you. 🎶
…was stuck in my head. & man, did it fit!
I connected quite strongly with Rico’s POV. There’s something about a man who knows what he wants, but also practices patience and boundaries that makes my heart race. Lena was harder for me to feel for, but that was just great writing on Nuria’s part. Lena is a character that builds walls made out of bullet-proof steel—not even the reader can bust through. However, once her brain catches up with her heart, all bets are off! ♥️
This book is for you if you enjoy: -He Falls First -Workplace Romance -Opposites Attract -Sweet/Clean Romance -Less than 300 pages -History and Academia
I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC copy, but you will be able to find Shall I Stay on KU or purchase for yourself on January 28, 2025!!
Let me just say, I have found one of my favorite books so far this year. Yes, I have said it. Not only did it have romance, funny moments, and a very awesome Abuela, but it had some of the coolest thing my island Puerto Rico has to offer. It was like imagining walking around the places they visited and seeing them right in front of me. Imagine the smell of Abuela's cooking and know you will have the best meal of your life. To the amazing romance that florish from the 2 characters from all the work and time they spend together. From start to finish, I absolutely loved it all, and I can't wait to see what other Morales get to show off their story ♡
This book just makes me smile. And now all I want to do is go to Puerto Rico and eat. The food in this book sounds amazing! Abuela (Tina) is my very favorite. The family is amazing. This book is an easy 5 stars. I adore it.
Lena is just lovely. She had a challenging childhood but that did not limit her. I loved her. Rico, oh my stars, you cannot help but love him. He is going to make you swoon. Swoon! Their banter and chemistry is simply lovely.
The romance didn’t feel like the main part for some of the book because of the history, the food, the family, honestly which I loved. In saying that the subtle start of the romance and once it ramped up was such a deep and strong romance I just wanted to weep for joy at parts. (I didn’t, because I kept it together, but it was just magically lovely.)
I know the history wasn’t supposed to be all accurate but I really enjoyed their diving into it and how it was depicted. Please read the end author’s notes too because I had so much fun learning about where the history ideas came from!
Alright sometimes I make notes while reading so I’m throwing them at you if there’s any interest: -The dance scene! 👏 -what is it about a guy in a baseball hat…especially when he has it on backwards. -dominoes -please tell me we get Juli’s story! (Also Mari’s) -“Mi Vida.” -love Monse and Meche -oh my goodness I LOVE this family.
CW: closed door (kisses only) TW: loss of parents, parental abandonment
Thank you so much to the author for allowing me to read this. Debut novel, what?! I see even more great things in the future.
I loved this love letter to Puerto Rico. The tourism board should really consider hiring Nuria as a consultant because she's definitely convinced me that I need to add this treasure island to my travel bucket list!
Everything about this book made my soul happy. A lovely family dynamic, food cravings thanks to such wonderful descriptions, rogue chickens, paso doble, a rich education in early Puerto Rican history all worked together to make this story come to life.
I loved the genealogy aspect. It added a nice lesson about roots and tethers, in addition to a lovely mystery to be solved.
"History is history, but it's the simple stories of community that are a true heritage. Staying and belonging, no matter the odds. That means a lot to me."
It is my soul's truth that a fair and favorable wind delivered Nuria Munoz to my life. We started as Goodreads friends, evolved into Instagram pals, and now I'm unbelievably happy to be an early reader and reviewer of her soon to be published debut novel! I pre-ordered this book approximately 19 seconds after the link went live, but I also received an advanced copy from the author. All thoughts are mine.
I am in love with this book. I’m going to try to write this as spoiler free as possible. The characters, the banter, the representation it all comes together so well. I adore the opposites between the characters.
So far the only thing that I’ve thought about this book that could make it better was if I was reading it in Spanish so I could enjoy those accents arguing.
I’m writing this as I’m halfway because it’s so good I want people to know!! I might edit this to add more later on.
A lovely debut! I loved the unique setting of Puerto Rico and how the storyline incorporated the historical sights and features (and food!) from the island.
Excellent, polished writing quality. Not cheesy or immature.
I wanted a little more from the romance in the first half, thus took off a half star. This book was very clean— no profanity and only very light kisses. Appropriate for any age reader.
This is the first full-length book by this author. It is a kisses only contemporary romance with plenty of chemistry and humor!
Nuria definitely has a way with words. I'm amazed at some of the beautiful expressions she puts together. I was first drawn to her writing by reading her reviews for other books. Then she focused that talent toward writing her own book.
This is a fun story full of history and culture along with a mystery and romance. It's the whole package! I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I will make a note here that the story is set in Puerto Rico and has a Hispanic flare to it. I loved that aspect! I am not a Spanish speaker and some of that part of the culture did slow my reading down at first. There is a Spanish dictionary of sorts included in the back and that was very thoughtful to include. My personal experience was that there were too many Spanish words and phrases that I didn't know, that I would have spent as much time in the dictionary as the actual story. I finally found myself just skimming over the parts that I didn't understand. If you understand Spanish, I think you will love that she included those things to give the reader more of the flavor of the culture. If you don't speak Spanish, do not let that aspect deter you from reading the book though! It is a good one!
All of that to say, this is why I NEED this book in audio. I don't think in accents. And I know these characters were full of accents from Puerto Rico to Spain! Audio would make this story come to life in my mind so much more. I know this isn't a realistic expectation for a brand new Indie author to even consider at this time. But I'm putting it here, so that one day when Nuria is a big time author, she'll make this dream of mine a reality!
Thank you so much to the author for the opportunity to read an advanced copy. I'm happily and voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I rarely read contemporary romance, BUT after reading Nuria's book reviews on Instagram, I knew I had to read any book she wrote, regardless of the genre. Her style of writing is clever and funny and just...too good! Her first full-length novel did not disappoint - 4.5 stars!
I have never been to Puerto Rico, but all of Nuria's descriptions made me feel like I knew and loved the place. I felt the humidity, tasted the food, and heard the ocean waves as I read. The surroundings, places, smells, all of it was beautifully done.
The mystery was really fun, and I was completely invested in discovering what happened to Alonso. And when they did find out, I cried. Not because they discovered what happened, but the WHY behind it. It was absolute perfection, especially the journal and definition of Mi Tesoro. I wish I could give more of my thoughts on this, but I don't want to spoil the book for anyone!
Rico is my favorite kind of hero (chivalrous and a servant's spirit), and Lena is my least favorite type of heroine ("I can do it myself" attitude). So I wanted to hug Rico and kick Lena at the beginning. However, I loved the slow growth of Lena's character, from lonely to loved to loving. What I liked the most about her character's progression was that it did not just come about because of one person (Rico); it was because of his whole family. Yes, yes, yes!
All the symbolism of the torch that was woven throughout the book - perfection. (I wish I read this in a book club because I want to discuss the torch and Mi Tesoro so much, but I do not want to give anything away in a review! But these 2 things were my favorite parts of the book!)
I loved Nuria's first novella The Super Big Favor - it was one of my top reads of 2024. I signed up for my first ever ARC for Shall I Stay because I loved Nuria's writing style and her first book so much. I'm so happy I got to read this wonderful book early. It truly is a gem. I can't wait for the sisters' stories...and maybe Abuela's too???????
Edited to add: I realized why I love Nuria's writing style so much. One of my favorite authors is LM Montgomery because of her beautiful descriptions of scenes, her witty dialogue, and one of a kind characters and couples (especially Anne/Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables and Valancy/Barney from The Blue Castle). Nuria is very much in the same vein as LM Montgomery!
Wow! What an absolutely swoony, immersive story with a hilarious “meet cute”, a fiercely independent “profesora” female lead, and a down-to-earth nerdy male lead who’ll do anything for his abuela. I loved this debut novel so much and can’t wait for the rest of the series! The banter between Rico and Lena was top notch! I loved how they created their own little inside jokes/memories that were referred to throughout the story. I also loved Rico’s tendency to make situations awkward, then try to cover it up through historical word vomit. And Lena’s complete predictableness made her moments of unpredictability (the paso doble!!!) so much more fun. I also loved the layers in the book. You get a bit of historical facts and genealogical sleuthing, and it all ends up intertwining with Lena and Rico’s story. You watch Lena and Rico work through trauma and connect in a way that somehow connects with historical legends and missing Spanish counts. I loved it! The meddling Morales women were also so fun and greatly added to the story. One more shout out for all the food scenes! I loved watching Lena try delicious Puerto Rican dishes. Now I want to try them all too! I loved that food was used to show family connection, love, and culture; sometimes, meal scenes in romcoms end up devolving into the girl worrying about her weight. Lena ate to connect, savor, and nourish, and it was refreshing and validating to my own experiences with my family.
CONTENT -🤬: none -❤️: kisses -⚠️: parental abandonment (past), loss of parents (past)
This was a fun summer romance set in Puerto Rico!
Things I enjoyed: -The setting-- definitely made me want to visit Puerto Rico. I've never been, but it sounds GORGEOUS. -The reason that Lena and Rico had to work together was to solve a genealogical mystery, and I enjoyed being along for that ride! -The dancing scenes -The Spanish words interspersed into the story -The Morales women! They are so fun. -The staying <3
Favorite Quotes: -"If there is one thing these years and wrinkles have taught us, it's to always be open to possibilities."
-"What is in this thing?" I ask as I get a better grip on it. "You never know when you'll need your research binders to cross-reference." "You sure it's not the emotional baggage of generations in here?"
-"And what would that true success story look like?" He considers for a moment. "Doing what you love while serving your community? To find and keep someone who wants to keep you too. To fill a home with love-chaos together. Everyone in that home feeling like they never have to worry about belonging. To live a life of hope and faith."
-"Letting love slip through your fingers is not a regret you will ever fully recover from."
What a fantastic debut! 😍 I knew as soon as Nuria said she was going to write a book that it would not disappoint. Her reviews are so entertaining and she’s always ready with a witty remark.
I loved the Puerto Rico setting and being immersed in the culture and food. The love and passion for this place shined through and seriously has me feeling like I need a trip to Puerto Rico asap.
Rico and Lena were such loveable characters and the romance was slow and sweet. I also really enjoyed getting to know Rico’s family—they were hilarious and I look forward to getting his sisters’ stories.
The genealogy research aspect of the story was fascinating and I was just as invested in finding out what happened to Alonso as they were.
Overall the writing and banter was superb and I can’t wait for more from Nuria!
I’ve never read a book set in Puerto Rico before, with a heroine who’s from Spain, but after reading Nuria’s novella, I knew I wanted more of her writing.
Enter Lena and Rico and especially Abuela. I really, really loved the unique setting, the charming cast of characters, the peek at a hurricane (that felt familiar to this Charleston girl), and the growth arcs. Lena is scared to risk; Rico has already risked it all and lost. Can they ever trust each other?
Plus the whole genealogical quest gave me National Treasure vibes, and all the yummy food mentioned made me hungry. Sweet, clean rom-com!
Wowsers! What a book! I’m not one who generally enjoys historical books, but this!? 🤭 Meet Lena the Spaniard. Independent profesora who is on an archeologist mission to unravel the mystery behind a man who sailed to Puerto Rico long ago. Lena works alongside a tour guide named Rico, Puerto Rican, who is charming and care free. The two must put their differences aside of Puerto Rico over Spain to solve the puzzle behind Alonso. But will these two be able to keep themselves from falling in love when one is determined never to let roots grow in a relationship?
I loved this book! The story, the characters and the development overall. Well done Muñez in your debute novel! I’m thankful I could be a part of the ARC team and read your masterpiece. I look forward to the second one!
I had high hopes for this book after Nuria's first novella, "The Super Big Favor," and they were fulfilled! She has such a wonderful, vivid writing voice, here all set against the impossibly romantic tropical backdrop of Puerto Rico.
The story starts with our main characters together from the very beginning, complete strangers who'll be working on a genealogical project together. At about 25% it all starts to come together as Lena and Rico (Federico😍) begin to fall in love, or at least longing at first. With the help of a hurricane, a grandma and 2 sisters who are a bit like a hurricane, and an increasingly fascinating hunt to find the missing 16th century nobleman, Rico becomes the home she never dared to dream of, and Lena becomes the purpose he was searching for. And it all ties in beautifully with the solution of the genealogical mystery that brought her to the island!
Thank you Nuria for the trip to Puerto Rico, and congratulations on your first full-length novel! Yours is a unique voice in the clean romance space and I'm grateful for it.
HOW is this a debut novel?? The character depth, the tight plot, the swoony chemistry, the AMAZING food descriptions have all the hallmarks of an experienced writer. I’m beyond impressed. I loved how we got into Lena’s closed off heart and Rico’s hyper brain — they were so different and yet so right for each other. I adored every minute I spent with them.
Enjoyable slow burn. I enjoyed reading this sweet clean romance with a slow burn. The spanish thrown in along the way made it feel authentic & helped me get a little better with my spanish. I loved the culture & insight in to spanish history. This new series is on my list to read as the books come out!
THIS STORY is so charming! I was sucked in by the multiple POVs and the charming setting of Puerto Rico. It felt very much like a vibey Letters to Juliet mixed with a sweet romcom adventurous family history mystery.
The story follows Dr. Magdalena who comes to Puerto Rico for a lead on her current genealogical research- where her coutnerpart is the unsuspecting Rico whose easy going manners and charm might just send uptight Magdalena packing. Romance is NOT what she needs right now after suffering from loss. Her job is to finish her research and get back home asap. Mother nature and Rico's family might have other plans as the two become more close.
I loved our main two characters and their slooooowwww burn. It had just the right tone for banter and took on serious topics like neglect, grief, and loss.
I am a Nuria stan and will likely read all her backlist and keep my eyes on this Los Morales series.
A special thank you to Nuria for letting me on her PR team! Read this one ASAP!
*I read an early copy from the author. This does not affect my review and the thoughts are my own. This review is voluntary.*
Ahh!! These two are so cute together! Okay, give me a moment to collect my thoughts and I will try to make this a helpful and coherent (or, maybe cohesive would be the better word choice here?) review. First off, I'll start by saying that there is a lot that I love about Nuria Munoz's stories, a trend or 'author's voice' if you will developing as she continues to hone her craft. I'm excited for that, and to be here near the beginning to see it unfolding. Such a treat!
Not all is perfect and rosy, although I know not everyone is going to agree with my thoughts on a few things, I'll try to share some of the good, and the not-so-fun thing, in a way that is both loving and full of grace. (I'm learning! I hope at least.)
I wasn't quite sold on Rico and Lena at first, I mean I liked them well enough, and thought their humor was funny (especially his) once it started to appear, but it was honestly his family that first won me over. (Don't worry, they both stole the show and got the spotlight back soon after!)
I will say, the main thing I (honestly, I hated it, more so when Rico jokingly agreed. Total heart-break) was the comments about 'kismet'. I know, not something most people understand or will agree with, but the most God teaches me, the more I realize that I *must* view everything in light of His Word, and if it's not from Him, or honoring Him, then it is against Him. Kismet, karma, chakra, yoga, and anything the least bit related if very much on the list of things God says in His Word that He hates, and as such, I admit I cringed when it was mentioned, but I was really upset and almost DNFed the story when Rico made a comment about kismet in response. Ugh! So, close!
I love so much about this one, and that was really the one thing that really stood out and screamed in a way I couldn't ignore, and at this point I don't want to ignore these things. I am called to be honest, and even promise an honest review, that is what I hope to provide in all aspects of my life. To be honest, that's my goal here, so the kismet comments had to be addressed, although I am very grateful that it was a fairly short scene, and not a major reoccurring conversation.
Dancing was another, and while I love music and dancing, as with anything I've come to learn that there is a good and a bad, and right and a wrong to everything. Not saying anything directly about music, dancing, or even those scenes in this one, just that it's become a difficult thing for me to talk about without a sort of forewarning I guess. The dancing in the story was very energetic, passionate, and very much a result of the expressive and proud nature of the Puerto Rican culture. I love that the author enjoys sharing that culture with outsiders like myself, and after having spent some time around a few Puerto Ricans personally, I can see it. I can absolutely see them breaking out in dance, loving a large meal with friends and family, and just overall having a good time. And honestly, I love it!
But we must also be cautious of what we do, what we think, and what we consume. This includes books and music as well as many other things. While I don't feel or consider anything directly wrong in the story where the dancing was concerned, it was clear that it was more about proving their abilities and later became something special between them, both things are find in moderation, but as with anything too much of a good thing can become toxic. So, while I loved the story, and it was clean, I also know that for many music and dancing can become an idol of sorts, so for me it's always harder for me to promote a story while at time same time cautioning against a thing or belief. Am I saying that the story is bad, or that dancing and cultural music is? Nope, not at all. Just that... while I love learning about new cultures and their traditions such a food and dance, I'm also increasingly aware that many of those customs and traditions are steeped in religious beliefs, which it's clear in the Bible that anything not of God is of the world, as there is only one God, and He makes it clear that those to belong to and believe in Him are to be set-apart. Not from people and cultures so much, but from the teachings and ways of the world. So, my love for different cultures, foods, ethnicities, and customs can sometimes become a little difficult to balance with my faith in Jesus Christ, which must always come first. Yeah, probably not the place and maybe over-sharing, but hey, if you've followed me or known me for any amount of time, you know it's bound to happen at some point. I'm sorry I'm not better with words and describing or explaining things like this, I'm working on it. Hopefully I'm getting even the tiniest bit better along the way?
Regardless, the sum of my review is that I loved this one. Absolutely adored these characters! Such a cute couple. Not the way Matt and Toni are (seriously, check out her novella if you haven't already!) but in their own way I think I ended up loving both couples equally. Some of the things I loved about each story were the same, or similar reasons. The food, the family (blood related or not, Mr. Jose is an example. Again, go read The Super Big Favor if you haven't yet!), the excitement that bubbles out of these characters is infectious, and I can't help grinning and cheering along-side them. They are adorable together, but again Matt and Rico aren't the same, like at all, although am I wrong for wanted to see them meet at some point? (Is it possible?) These couples, and even the rest of the Morales gang, I bet it would be amazing!
Anyway, I digress I was saying that the characters in this one are completely original in a lot of ways, but I loved that her characters maintain a sweet, kind, compassionate, true authenticity that makes them all the more special. Not just Matt and Rico, but the women too, oh can she write some sassy ladies, but we love them! She has the ability to make that perfect balance of sassy and independent with a good measure of grace and compassion that draws me in every time. Rico's grandmother is a great example, and honestly, can she adopt me? Where do I sign up? Because that is just the type of person she is. I loved it, and this whole story has that type of 'warm-hug' feel that makes it so special and so very beautiful!
“You have a home here”— … I don’t just mean you have a place to stay for whenever. What I mean is you are family now, and this is your home. Any storm—any kind of storm—you have a home.”
* Ahh I love his family already hehe * Okay, and I love them both too * I am just giggling and laughing so much! * Ahh I love Latinos and their big, energetic, welcoming families * Hehe this hurricane development is just what I was waiting for 😏 * Ahh I want to try all this food! * Nuria! How could you tease me like that?? * Just kiss already! * Oh, Rico. My heart hurts for him * The longing and pining is just 🫠 * Awwwww 🫶🫶🫶
Oh my GOODNESS! This story is just truly so delightful. I loved it from the very start and just devoured the whole thing.
Can we talk about the yearning? The pining? How about the swooning? All top notch!
Nuria’s writing is so fun and quirky. And I loved the setting! Books that transport you to their setting are my favorite kind, and this one certainly did that.
I freaking love Rico. He’s so sweet and charming and just everything good. I was rooting for him right from the start.
And Lena. Oh, Lena. She had so much fear to work through, but I’m so glad she did! She’s so fun and kind and deserves all the best things.
Absolutely and 100% you should read this book and just soak it all up. You will not regret it.
“she adjusted her dress code accordingly. But it is not “according” with my work focus. Her long, shapely legs? Extremely “discordant” with my work focus.”
“…persistently enchanting man—… How does he not know he inspires and nurtures as easily as he breathes?”
“Maybe I stayed adrift because, deep inside, I knew you were out there.”
“I am, to my core, someone who stays. Also, someone worthy of someone who stays.”
“Ay mija, you should know this. That boy thinks of nothing but you.”
Thanks to the author for the ebook. All opinions are my own.
Book: Shall I stay Author: Nuria Muñoz Personal rating: 5/5 stars Spice rating: 1/5 Language: 0/5 Plot: 5/5
This is not historical fiction but this book is rich in history, culture and food. It is a reverse grumpy sunshine romance set in Puerto Rico.
Personal thoughts:
I don’t know but this book is tempting me to fly of to Puerto Rico and just spend the summer there (I know it’s crazy), the author really painted a vivid picture of the landscape and the sea and it sounds like paradise.
This book just wrecked my emotions in the best way. Rico was just so sweet, he had been through so much and his life was upended in a spectacular way but he didn’t let it make him jaded but he learned from the pain and he chose to stick around for those he loved even when it was hard. My heart broke for Magdalena and all she had to go through from a young age and all alone but I admire the courage she exhibited and I love the passion both her and Rico have for history. I also really loved the Morales women and 100% need more of them. I just love Tina, she’s an old lady with a fiery spirit. All in all this book had me in tears but I loved it.
Last year, I missed out on a trip to PR but my kids got to go 😊 I enjoyed their stories and pictures. I definitely missed all the Latino culture (I’ve been to multiple Latin countries before). Sooo… I was excited to try a new-to-me author while also vicariously visiting the lovely island of Puerto Rico myself.
It really is a fun summer story! Lena and Rico were both fun characters and I couldn’t help but love the whole Morales family. There’s also a little historical mystery which I adored.
Though it’s clean/not Christian writing, I appreciated the themes of faithfulness and belonging. There was more “noticings” than I prefer and it dragged a few times, BUT I’m so glad I stuck with it. This was a sweet story with fab characters!
Read this if you… 🇵🇷want to visit PR and can’t 😉 🇵🇷enjoy Latino culture 🇵🇷have a soft spot for geneology 🇵🇷like witty banter or slow burn in romance 🇵🇷want a family story 🇵🇷are looking for a fun/beachy summer read 🇵🇷love HEAs
If I Stay also had a lot of delicious Puerto Rican food I now want to try 😝 I look forward to book two coming out in the fall.
This review might get edited in a few days, I just needed to dump my thoughts since they are fresh.
I'll start by saying that this is in fact one of the few books I have read set in Puerto Rico that I felt was by someone that is or has been to Puerto Rico. I loved the tiny bits of culture and the island in the story and I really appreciate it.
Most of my issues are with the plot. I didn't like the first proximity in this or the banter between them. I didn't like the kind of digs from the Spanish Character example being surprised food in Puerto Rico is so good because she comes from the land of Paella, I get that maybe it was supposed to be funny but I didn't find it funny. There were a couple of lines that really rubbed me the wrong way, but fair.
I found Rico to be a tiny bit bland, I don't know why. I wasn't blow away by him (or her) in this book.
It's not my book, and maybe give it a chance and ignore everything I just said. 2.5 stars.
