[Thanks to Viz and Edelweiss for an ARC of this manga in exchange for an unbiased review]

Maybe not quite the triumph of last volume, but only by comparison. Girl Crush has turned out to be an absolute powerhouse of a title and one that clearly knows just what buttons to push and how to maximize its setting.

For one thing, I do think it walks a fine line between showing the talent and passion of the trainees, but also grappling with the reality of the idol world. It may not condemn it, but certain aspects condemn themselves anyway. Sion has some internal dialogue this volume that makes him world weary far beyond his age.

We start off back with Minchae and Jiwoo, which is a welcome return since they were gone all last volume. I liked how this quickly brings everybody back up to speed on their personalities - Minchae has no confidence and Jiwoo is difficult.

Seeing Tenka come back into that mix, after Jiwoo once more gets shut down trying to move forward from her current role, just illustrates how much effect that shoot with Sion had on her. If Tenka’s now soaring, they’re barely airborne.

And then the drama really starts.

Tenka’s new outlook ends up having her depose fellow trainee Sua from her current role in their group. Sua’s on her very last shot to debut before she ages out of the program, so this is concerning to her.

Poor Sua gets a lot of focus here and she’s nearly as interesting as Tenka. Mainly because Sua had an opportunity to help a fellow trainee in the past after a duplicitous roomie of Sua’s tricked said trainee into drinking alcohol and posted it online (a big taboo in this world).

Seeing this underhanded tactic work, even if it ruined that trainee’s dream, ends up sending Sua down a slippery slope and her corruption after being a bedrock for younger trainees is really well done. Her silence back then just sends her desperation down a bad path.

Once it becomes clear that Sion and Tenka both took more than expected from that music video shoot, well, you can see the collision course that we’ve ended up on here and Tenka’s career is suddenly in real (professional) danger.

Tenka and Sion both caught something during that shoot and I have to say that, for somebody who initially came off as a punk, Sion has more to him than that. He’s aware of the perils Tenka faces and wants to help, but not so aware of himself that he won’t inadvertently create the perfect trap.

It’s too good to spoil everything that happens here, but the way the story plays out is believable on all counts and it once more demonstrates just what sort of person Tenka is. It’s one thing to be told a character is magnetic, but Tenka commands the page like she really is an idol.

This series is so, so strong. It’s quietly turning into something that shoots to the top of my reading list and it blends dynamic art, excellent characters, and a popular genre into a fantastic blend.

4.5 stars - I was worried that we’d never get another volume as good as the last one, but dang if this isn’t close. This started good, but it has truly blossomed to be great.

Genuine shock that I got so obsessed with this so quickly. A kinda overly-sentimental, wandering manga about too-sexy 15-year-old kpop idol trainees is not exactly my usual fare. HOWEVER. Dear god it's got me hook line & sinker.

I LOVE THESE GIRLS AND I WANT THE BEST FOR THEM. PLEASE LET THEIR DREAMS COME TRUE. Reading this manga also inspires me to draw--some fantastic, fluid, effortless skill on display here with the dance scenes, not to mention all the fantastic fashion!

(Translated up to ch. 81.)

I liked Sua's arc, here, especially her last scene in the book. It made me sympathize with her despite what had come before.
