Warhammer 40,000 10th Edition

Crusade: Nachmund Gauntlet

Rate this book
The Invasion Begins

The Nachmund Gauntlet is the largest and most stable of the known routes across the Great Rift. Once a lifeline to deliver reinforcements to those cut off from Holy Terra, it is now a channel through which the destructive treachery of the Traitor Legions can flow from the Imperium Nihilus. The forces of Abaddon the Despoiler have bludgeoned their way through the Nachmund Gauntlet, with his herald – Haarken Worldclaimer – at their speartip. Only the hastily defended Sanctus Wall of loyal systems stand poised to resist, already weakened by heretical agents. On the fortified world of Sangua Terra, grand strategies of conquest and defiance are entwined with bold heroism and darkest betrayal.

This 120-page hardback book is a Crusade expansion for Warhammer 40,000. It captures the rich narrative of the battle for the Nachmund Gauntlet as Haarken Worldclaimer unveils his grand strategies of conquest and defiance. The book also includes the rules to play narrative games, build and upgrade a Crusade army between battles, and run your own campaigns.

PATHS OF RUINATION
A narrative introduction to the setting, the trail of destruction leading to the heretic assault on the Sanctus Wall, and the strategies made in preparation. The story of this frantic battle for survival is told through stories, maps, illustrations, and a comprehensive bestiary of the Warlords of Sangua Terra.

CRUSADE RULES
The rules you will need to take your army on a Crusade across the stars. You'll also find unique Battle Traits, Crusade Relics, Agendas, and Crusade Blessings – themed around the Sangua Terran War.

MISSIONS
15 immersive and exciting Crusade missions, perfect for narrative games and for your Nachmund Gauntlet campaign. These include Purge After Inload, Heralds of Vengeance, Beachhead Offensive, and All-out War.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Included with the book are a set of photocopiable assets comprising two Crusade cards and an Order of Battle, as well as a double-sided A2 poster depicting the Urbanosprawl Alpha which can be used to track Campaign progress. The reverse side shows artwork of the Adepta Sororitas battling the Night Lords.

This campaign book sees the continuation of the Chaos attempt to gain control of the Nachmund Gauntlet as Haarken Worldclaimer leads his forces against the planet of Sangua Terra, a lynchpin of the defence on the Imperium Sanctus side of the Gauntlet. As usual, this campaign book begins with the lore for the conflict before moving on to the rules for refighting elements of the campaign.

The background section of the book was reasonably good, with some nice short pieces of fiction scattered alongside the lore. I would say that the Chaos side of the lore was probably a little too focused on Haarken Worldclaimer and I would have liked to have seen some other perspectives on the conflict on that side (although that is probably just because I am not a fan of Haarken’s character). The Imperial side of the conflict was a bit better, especially once Saint Celestine joined the fight and I would have liked to follow her more than Canoness Superior Junith Eruita (but again, that’s probably due to Celestine being one of my favourite Imperial characters). As a fan of Successor Chapters, it is also good to see the Guardians of the Covenant being the most prominent Space Marine Chapter in the book instead of one of the First Founding Chapters as is usually the case.

The artwork and model photography in the book are as good as usual for a Games Workshop publication, but I do feel that the map of Urbansprawl Alpha, the setting for the majority of the action, is a little too abstract, looking more like a circuit board than a map.

The rules are pretty standard for a campaign book with the usual campaign specific Battle Traits, Crusade Relics, Agendas, Crusade Blessings, etc. alongside the new campaign rules, Tactical Reserves and Surgical Deep Strike, representing the escalating nature of the battles during the campaign. The Tactical Reserves rule in particular seems to be quite interesting as splitting your army into four sections, with only three being used in the battle adds some nice tactical choices to games. The Surgical Deep Strike rules is also quite nice as it sees the return of Deep Strike Mishaps, adding some nice risk and randomness back into Deep Striking.
