I have to admit I have absolutely no interest in football so I just skimmed the descriptions of the actual games played. But I was born and raised in Salem and knew a lot of the people the author wrote about although I graduated from SHS 22 years before all of this took place. Mostly I read it because I remember when this all happened (and a family member was one of the teachers who went on strike and who also had the author in her classroom) so was curious as to what actually was behind all the drama. And the book delivered!
This story of the Salem football team and the role it played on young high schoolers is a very inserting book. It plays into key character traits developed, such as hope and perseverance. I would recommend this book to any current or former athletes.
Over the summer I read the book, "NO BACKING DOWN: The Story of the 1994 Salem High School Football Team" by Sean Stellato. This book is based on a true story of the 1994 Salem High School football team. In which Sean was the quarterback of that year plus the Witches were undefeated that year and were going to the super bowl. But a teacher strike almost jeopardized their season. The important characters were Sean Stellato and Coach Ken Perrone just to name a few. The story takes place in Salem Massachusetts year 1994. The conflict was about a teaching strike that put the football teams season in danger. The main idea/theme of the story is determination and over coming adversity. "While I was getting ready for bed, my father stuck his head in to ask, "How was your workout earlier?" "Cold," I responded. "Real challenging, but very interesting." Now I chose this quote because I have said the same thing to my dad after a workout. In the story I liked that I know all the place the he would mention like the Salem High and Castle Rock. I didn't really dislike a lot of the stuff in the story, overall it was a great book to read while I was sitting in the parking lot waiting to go into work.
The story was nice, but I thought not told well. There were times it seemed to jump ahead without warning. The emotions seemed clique or out of place, maybe just because they are not typical of a sports novel. Definitely only ok, probably wouldn't recommend it.
I had the opportunity to meet Sean Stellato at a fundraiser for the Lawrence Boys & Girls Club. Great person! The next day I purchased his book and didn't want to put it down. Amazing story of a football team coming together against all odds and creating memories to last a lifetime. A must read for all!
