In Ireland, freed after being trapped behind the Veil, the fae are reasserting their powers and indulging their desires...
I hide in my cottage in the woods, and try not to let the trauma of my past inform my present. But when that past comes back to haunt me, I turn to the red wolf to keep me safe.
For that red wolf is The Morrígan, an ancient Irish goddess who has no qualms about destroying anyone who threatens me…
Chase Me in the Woods is a sapphic Little Red Riding Hood retelling where the woodcutter gets his comeuppance, and the wolf goddess gets eaten out.
Ali Williams' inner romance reader is never quite satisfied, which is why she oscillates between writing romance, editing romance, and studying it as part of her PhD.
She can be found at the foot of the South Downs in the UK, either nerding out over local mythologies or drinking cocktails on the beach.
She believes with all of her bifurious heart that writing romance is an act of rebellion and that academia will be so much better when studying diverse HEAs is naturally part of the curriculum.
This was a lovely reread for me for this rerelease! I enjoyed it the first time and even more this time. I love the Morrigan! I liked the consent and protectiveness between them and Ciara. I liked how Ciara was able to see her own strength and be open to all the magical things that are a part of Red (The Morrigan) and embracing the Pack. I would have enjoyed more insight into how Ciara is connected to the Pack and Red as their relationship strengthens and deepens. However, this novella does plenty to show their connection and to enjoy their story ;). I recommend this and the other Godstouched stories!!
4 stars. A unique Little Red Riding Hood retelling. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ciara was so much stronger than she gave herself credit for and I wanted to hug her and keep her safe. Her ex was an abusive asshole and I was glad that he got his comeuppance. Red was great as well and I loved her and Ciara together. This was a damn good read.
I really enjoyed this Little Red Riding Hood retelling! Make the wolf a shapeshifting woman? I’m there! Highly recommend this short read. Can’t wait to read more by Ali 😍
Written in first person with 2x POV’s. Shifter/Human, Escaping a toxic relationship, mentions of past DV. 2x Spicy Scenes.
As usual I loved this book so so much, I was in from the very start, Ciara was immediately likable and the action at the very beginning drew me in real good. The introduction to The Morrigans character was like a hero come to rescue the princess in distress, it was all suspense, I was sat on the edge of my seat. I also loved that so much was explained so quickly but it wasn’t info dumped in the slightest, it wasn’t even technically explained, it was just written in a way that lets the reader understand what’s going on? The story itself was beautiful, to experience Ciara in the beginning, which would probably be at quite a low point for her, and then to experience her as the story develops and her confidence grows and she gets to explore her new life of freedom with her wolf pack protectors, it was beautiful. I also appreciated how well the abusive ex part was written in this book, I don’t know how to explain without spoiling, but he is in Ciara’s mind throughout- even when he isn’t able to physically hurt her anymore, like he wasn’t out of sight out of mind? Ciara knew she was safe with The Morrigan, but still had moments of panic where she either needed confirmation or reassurance or just struggled. And In the beginning how before she has even seen him, she knows he is there, and it’s instant panic, and a prepared plan of what to do when this happens is put into motion. I think it was very well and respectfully written. I loved learning more about The Morrigan so so so much, they always intrigued me a lot when they popped up in the other Godstouched books, so to read from their perspective was so exciting. I loved their transformations and their connection to the woods and the pack, they are truly such an interesting character. I also like that the timeline is realised in this book, I may have just forgotten it from the other books because it has been a while, but The Morrigan says they only came back from the veil a few months ago, and that this is their first time properly becoming human since, I would love to learn more about what happened to make the veil drop, there is truly nothing more I can say besides this series is just so interesting to me, I need to know everything, I want to read about all the characters, all the gods, all of it.
Chase Me In The Woods is a tender, atmospheric romance centered on a shape-shifting red wolf, the Morgan, an ancient goddess who forms a powerful connection with a woman carrying a painful past and an obsessive ex-husband. The blend of fantasy and emotional vulnerability gives the story an enchanting feel.
Even though it’s a short read, the chemistry between the main characters comes through clearly and naturally. Their connection feels earned rather than rushed, and the story takes its time building tension instead of sprinting straight to the spicy moments. My only wish is that the story had been longer and more developed, especially when it comes to the Morgan’s backstory. I wish we could have spent more time watching both protagonists grow and fully overcome their pasts.
This sapphic red riding hood retelling is for anyone who wanted the wolf to end up being the hero of the story. I loved all the Irish lore that was included as well. I had to look up everything but learned a lot. I would say this is a slow burn because the spice happens around 75% and after. However, since the book is short the wait isn’t that long and it is worth the wait.
It's an enjoyable story that is not overly deep, a tale of healing and finding where you belong. It is fairly fast paced, shifting focus part way through once a certain event happens, but it does work quite well for what it is. Hurt/comfort, pack dynamics, a touch of the divine with the fae gods, and lots of sweet moments.
