In Winter Murder book two of the Bird Girl Witches series, ghosts have invaded Talus Hall and renowned 15-year-old medium Francesca LeGentil is just the person to exorcise them.

But she’s also been secretly hired to investigate a murder which happened next door at Talus Manor, a place where evil has taken root ever-more deeply.

Delving into the cursed history of the duelling Durr-Iggsby’s, Francesca uncovers a pattern to the persecution, tying it to the roots of the Dorojenja.

But when her sleuthing awakens a more ancient evil, no one in The Korvids is safe.

Well I did like this one a little more than the first one. So let’s get into it.

The good: I liked this FMC more than I did in the first book. I think that she was a little spicier and I liked her confidence in her skills. I also like the haunted house mystery of if all and the ghosts in the mansion. I also liked how the plots of the two books were starting to come together with the curse/prophecy and seeing how they are all going to be connected.

The not so good: once again the exclamation marks my goodness they are excessive 😅 but also I feel like once again the writing is just kind of all over the place. While I do think she did a better job of explaining some things on this book and how certain magic systems worked, it was just messy in the delivery. I really did feel like I was in a teenagers head as I feel like we just bounced around in her thoughts and the scenes. There weren’t many smooth transitions between scenes and it just didn’t feel like it flowed well. I also do think the dialogue in these books is a strange mix of old timey but also very immature on a lot of the characters’ parts.

Will I continue this series? Most likely not. I did receive this book as an ARC from the author and do greatly appreciate it, this series just sadly is not for me.

"Four witches will stand. Great evil will call. Dark merges with light to bury them all."
I loved this book. Francesca may be a young medium but she has other strong ladies around her to help when she is called to Talus Manor to help solve a murder and figure out why the ghosts are slamming doors, windows and "causin' such a frightful racket!"
Francesca uses her powers and senses to figure out what is happening in the manor but when she gets her own familiar, a white raven named Stella, Francesca seems to find comfort with having a companion that she can telepathically talk to in times of need.

The story revels family secrets, dark magic, murder and brings in characters from Autumn Death which really made me excited for possibly more to come. I'm saying that because of how the book ended and the quote above.

I didn't read it as fast as normal but that was because I wanted to savor the story and magic.

Winter Murder was a spooky, magical read. It follows psychic teen Francesca as she investigates a haunted manor, a murder, and some seriously dark secrets. The magical world is vivid and beautifully gothic. I especially loved Francesca's familiar, Stella, a white raven-and thought it was such a cool idea that they were connected telepathically.

Even though it's book two, I didn't feel lost at all and felt that it works as a standalone read. There were a few slow parts for me, but overall, it's a great paranormal mystery with a rich atmosphere and plenty of witchy magic.

That ending! I've been a bit of a slump but this story still was fantastic! I love the world that has been built and the magical system in place. We continue to build on the characters while seeing new ones join in. The mystery of the mur der that draws us to the manor isn't even the tip of the iceberg for this story, where we also see a budding romance start. Some of the fights do get a little graphic, so heads up there, but I cannot wait to see what happens next!
