Love and survival collide when trust is the ultimate gamble…
Marshall Clark III never meant to hurt Amity Landers. But the clone indentured to Dark Ops couldn’t allow his attraction to a beautiful woman destroy his sole chance for freedom. Having inadvertently put her life in danger, he’s willing to marry her so she can gain sanctuary on planet Refuge.
But is she grateful? No. Instead, the formerly sweet, enchanting woman has turned bitter and angry and seems intent on making his life miserable. Fortunately, the Cosmic Mates marriage contract provides an escape clause. However, he’s locked in for a year until he can regain his freedom.
Terminally unlucky in love, Amity Landers still had high hopes when she met the handsome, charming Marshall Clark. But after a magical first date that swept her off her feet, she’s crushed when she discovers the Dark Ops agent used her, faking interest to obtain the information he wanted. And worse, contact with him jeopardized her life. The only recourse is to accept his grudging offer of marriage, which will enable her to get asylum. But she’ll be counting the days until she can break free of her fake, pity marriage.
When even friendship seems out of reach, can two people in a fake marriage who hate each other find true love before time runs out? * * * * All Cosmic Mates sci-fi romances can be read as standalones. The series novellas are released in duets, each two-book set being its own mini-series. Books 1 & 2 are a set, books 3 & 4 are a new set, and books 5 and 6 are different set. Double Bind (Cosmic Mates 6) is the second book of the duet. (Double Take is the first book).
USA Today bestselling author Cara Bristol writes science fiction romance about tough alien and cyborg heroes who fall hard for sassy heroines.
Cara is a homebody who married a wanderer. When she’s not writing or being distracted by squirrels cavorting outside her office window, she enjoys reading and traveling the world with her husband. Topping her bucket list is visiting all seven continents and petting a squirrel.
He seduced her, he drugged her, he kidnapped her, and then he married her. Anyone surprised this marriage is more like hostile combatants trapped together? Cara Bristol’s Cosmic Mates series has been filled with some fun sci-fi romance surprises with this latest having a cloned character and an enemies to lovers vibe. I was eager to see how Marshall and Amity got this tangled knot working for their happily ever after.
Double Bind is the second part of the third Cosmic Mates‘ duo. Marshall and Amity’s story began during the earlier book so I recommend Double Take first.
Double Bind reads quickly jumping in when the frosty pair arrive at their destination on the planet of Refuge. To be given asylum here, Amity had to be married to an already accepted Marshall. He had no desire for an angry wife who hated his guts, but he felt he owed it to her to help get her to safety. In truth, none of the fiasco of before was his fault and he had good reason to lie to her at the time, but he caught feelings including the guilt that came with playing a role and Amity, who was already vulnerable about never having a guy take a genuine interest, was hurt deeply by the deception.
I enjoyed that this had a strong emotion conflict that they had to resolve, but it never tipped the scales into too much drama that felt affected. Oh sure, there is a late period misunderstanding, but, again, it doesn’t carry on too long. In truth, this felt cozy and sweet even with the heat of their attraction simmering in the background until they resolved matters.
It was fun seeing a different village on the planet and how it was a smaller place focused on artisan work like Faith’s pottery, Amity’s weaving and crocheting, and John and Marshall’s woodworking in a diverse alien community.
All in all, a fast, but heartwarming and engaging read. Hoping for more Cosmic Mates series in the future. In truth, I’ll pretty much read anything Cara Bristol will right and enjoy it. This series has excitement, but is overall for those who like a cosier sci-fi romance.
I rec'd an eARC from the author to read in exchange for an honest review.
My full review will post at That's What I'm Talking About on 5.22.25
Double Bind is Book 6 in the Cosmic Mates series by Cara Bristol. All of the books(written as duets) have been so entertaining! If you read the book description, you'll have a good idea of the story to come.
I loved the characters in all of the books of the series, but most especially these of the last Duet, Double Take, and Double Bind. The main characters of this Duet have been my favorites of the series. John and Faith began the story in Double Take; and Amity and Marshall wrapped up the Duet with Double Bind. The two men and clones. New and fresh and fun.
The storyline is suspenseful and gripping. I love that Ms. Bristol always delivers an excellent story along with all those entertaining sexy bits.
Ms. Bristol also paints a fascinating picture of the world in the inhabitants of each book dwell, and in this book's primative world, it was so fun to read how they made or acquired things we take for granted. If this is the finish of the series, and I hope it is not, it was an excellent finish! Loved it!
What a lovely story !!! We met Faith and John in the last Cosmic Mates story , and now we get their friends Amity, and Marshall's story. Amity and Her bestie Faith were on Terra Nova , running a business together. Faith was the talent making pottery, and Amity was the business. Until they all had to leave very, very quickly. Now they are all on planet Refuge, and married. Amity has only known him for a few days !!!!! This is not how she saw her life going.
Marshall was John's superior at Dark Ops, and came to save him. Not expecting Amity. Really pretty Amity . The only way she could come to Refuge was to be married. Not an ideal situation. But here we are. This book was a very lovely , easy read, and I am looking forward to more of this series !!!
Another great read! This is the sixth book in this series and book two in the duet, amity and Marshall make a good pair of characters and make the story interesting as they try to coexist ! Plenty of ups and downs in their adventures kept my attention throughout really well done storytelling thank you for the enjoyment hope there will be more to come
The story is the sixth in the Cosmic Mates series. Will pick up from Double Take, where John, Faith, Marshall, and Amity have escaped Dark Ops and are heading to Refuge—to be refugees. Marshall and John have been accepted, but neither Faith nor Amity—it will take a marriage to stay there. For John and Faith, that is great, but not so much for Amity and Marshall.
Amity isn’t happy with Marshall, she discovered he used her to garner information about John Bragg, leaving her, once again, disillusioned. What is it about her that men can’t commit? She thought their ‘date’ on Terra Nova went well—but it was all a farce. His trying to protect and rescue John Bragg placed not only Amity, but Faith in Dark Ops crosshairs. He thought offering to marry her so she could stay on Refuge was being helpful, but she isn’t feeling impressed.
“Beatings will continue until morale improves.”
The four of them will be assigned to Artisan’s Loft district, where John and Marshall will learn woodworking at the ‘woodshed. Faith will be at the pottery studio and Amity at the loom studio. Amity will learn a new technique, how to spin horniger fur into thread that can be woven on a loom and also into yarn. She will be working with Darmaine. Without telling too much of what happened on Terra Nova, she indicates that her marriage to Marshall is temporary—the one mandatory year before they can dissolve it.
Darmaine: Do you like him? Amity: Yes, I like him. He wants to be friends. Darmaine: That’s a positive sign! How can you love someone and not be his or her friend? You’ve been married for a day. How long did you know him? Amity: A little over a week. Darmaine: Give it time. Refuge is a place for second chances. Take it one day at a time and see what develops. He must have had some feelings for you to marry you. Most men don’t give up their freedom without a fight or great love.
“Sometimes it is not the choices we make that have the biggest impact on our lives but how we act on the decisions.”
I enjoyed the story, and Marshall and Amity together. Basically, they are strangers trying to adjust and make the best of things. They do have chemistry, and when they decide to stop blaming one another and embrace their relationship, they realize that they have feelings for one another. I won’t say it was a cliffhanger, but a definite surprise ending.
Ms. Cara Bristol has a way of describing people, places, and even fictional things to make you believe it is real. Her characters are unique, mostly likable, and usually always have a touch of humor, with a touch of sizzle to them.
"Sometimes it is not the choices we make that have the biggest impact on our lives but how we act on those decisions."
The second book in the duet with prior book, Double Take, Double Bind is also a little shorter. Even though it's about a different couple, it really needs to be read after reading the first book or you will probably be lost.
I really liked Marshall. He is an interesting character, although I don't feel we got to know enough about him. Amity we know better as she is best friends with Faith, the heroine of the last book. Amity was a lot more likeable in the last book. In this one she kind of annoyed me at first. I like how the "clones" are presented in these two books. They seem so natural, it's completely believable. Marshall especially really was relatable, acting and reacting how I would expect. I really felt bad for him as he clearly had missed out on so much in life. He and Amity both truly deserve a happy future.
There is no real action or much plot in this book. I actually kept waiting for Dark Ops to do something or show up, but they never did. This book focused exclusively on the relationship building of the two main characters. I thought they were cute together, once Amity stopped acting so bitter and resentful.
I think I liked this duet even better than the Kiss duet, mostly because I just liked John and Marshall so much. I can't wait to see what the next duet will bring.
4.5 stars. Marshall, the male human clone lead, met Amity, the female lead, whilst searching for his friend (in the previous story, Double Take). Inviting her on a date to acquire information has left Amity certain that he has no genuine interest in her.
Now on a refugee planet and married, because otherwise Amity couldn’t get access, neither is sure how they can make this marriage of convenience work. However, once they start trying to be friends, they find they get along really well, and then the chemistry between them sparks. But they both have significant insecurities plaguing them and making them uncertain of the other’s commitment and emotions…
This novella is dual POV, well written and edited, and a sweet and steamy, clone/human, sci fi romance. I enjoyed Marshall’s gradual acceptance of his feelings for Amity, and his willingness to be vulnerable with her. I enjoyed Amity’s willingness to trust Marshall and to take on the challenges of their situation. I enjoyed the steamy intimate scenes. I enjoyed the supportive secondary characters. I’m enjoying the refugee planet and looking forward to more from the author.

Marshall Clark III has finally escaped the Dark Ops organization and is safely established on the planet of Refuge. Unfortunately, he had to marry Amity Landers for her to be accepted also. Since it was his fault that she had been targeted by Dark Ops for termination, he figured it was the least he could do. Besides, it was only for a year, then they can both go their separate ways.
Amity Landers really liked Marshall Clark when they first met. Then she learned that he was only using her to get information about her friend Faith in order to find his “missing” operator, John Bragg. Now they are on Refuge and she was forced to marry Marshall or be killed. Big choice! Well, at least it’s only for a year and then she can dump him and get on with her life!
These two got off to a really bad start, but as they as forced to live together as husband and wife, they start to discover that maybe they have more in common then they realized. But just as things start going well and they decide to try and give the relationship a chance, secrets from their past are revealed and their relationship implodes. Marshall has his work cut out for him if he ever wants Amity to trust him again. Excellent ending to the series!
i liked this story. it was fun in places, a bit sad, quirky making u laugh esp the "tailless" character, and more. marshall has finally made good his escape from dark ops and rescued his friend john however he ended up hurting a female amity in the process and nearly got her killed. in order to save her and them all to find sanctuary on another planet to be safe he is forced to marry her. amity is not amused nor happy having to marry a man she thought really liked her but only was using her. neither one wants to be married so plan to use the 1 yr escape clause in the marriage contract but have to co exist until the year is up but there's nothing but hostility now between them. then they discover they also have to share a bed because the cabins are so small. slowly they end up talking a bit and sharing history and this makes them try to become friends to get thru the year. add in a bit of matchmaking and some interesting happenings and a bit of fate and things begin to change. good character descriptions, great world building with lots of details to make it seem real and some fun happenings that will make u laugh. this book holds your interest and its a great series.

Marshall is a clone raised in secrecy, trained for covert missions, and taught that attachment is a liability. When he’s sent to a quiet settlement on Terra Nova to recover a fellow operative who broke the rules for love, he expects a simple extraction. But Amity—resourceful, guarded, and completely unaware of the truth—changes everything. Forced into a marriage of convenience to escape a dangerous cover-up, Marshall and Amity find themselves building a new life together on the remote planet Refuge. At first, they’re just surviving—sharing a roof, a bed, and a fragile truce. But somewhere between awkward dinners, handmade gifts, and late-night conversations, survival turns into something real. But, the past doesn’t let go easily. Secrets, miscommunications, and old wounds threaten to undo the fragile connection they’ve built. When loyalty, honesty, and the future hang in the balance, both will have to decide whether love is worth the risk. A slow-burn, human-clone, sci-fi romance, exploring connection, second chances, trust, found family, belonging, growth, secret pasts, interplanetary politics, unexpected love, and what happens when two people who never planned on each other become the one thing neither of them wants to lose.
Marshall Clark III is now out of the Dark Ops organization and will be moved to the safely of the planet, Refuge. Because he had accidentally put Amity Landers in danger of being terminated as a loose end by pretending to care for her as he sought information, he would have to marry her and make her eligible for protection on Refuge along with him. According to the Cosmic Mates contract, they will have to stay married for only a year and can then dissolve the marriage and walk away to continue their lives separately. But learning that he had used her and had no feelings for her, Amity Landers hates him and can’t wait to be done with this charade. He wanted his freedom; and she thought they could have a future together which she now knows is untrue. However, living together isn’t as bad as they had thought it would be as they opened up to each other and got to know each other better. Will they ultimately work things out together and give their marriage a real chance? Can she ever forgive and trust him again?
Marshall Clark III is clone like his friend John Bragg. If you read, “Double Take” you already met him and Amity Landers. He was on a mission to stop John but things didn’t go as planned. Now they are living on Refuge and trying to make a fresh start. Both Marshall and Amity were in for a rocky year. For one, Marshall didn’t tell Amity the truth in the beginning. And two, Amity has been looking for her Mr. Right and she thought it was Marshall. I feel for them both. They just need to communicate better. I started tearing up when I read the ending. Both had insecurities and had to work through that to realize they were meant to be.

This is the second book in the newest duet of this series and I loved getting to know Amity & Marshall after meeting them in the first book Double Take. This was a really fun story and I enjoyed seeing how the two of them got to know one another and how their relationship developed. The epilogue at the end was also really sweet. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future including any future books in this series if it continues.

Amity and Marshall’s story picks up right after the events of Double Take (which needs to be read first), and is a quick, feel good read that concludes the duet. The two of them start their marriage on Refuge with resentment and anger despite their initial attraction, but they can’t stay mad once they start to empathize with each other. I loved that Amity and Marshall are in their forties. They are both mature enough to reflect, communicate honestly and are willing to risk being vulnerable again to build a new life together. A lovely, light read for adults who recognize that relationships take work!

I received an ARC from Booksprout and I'm willingly leaving a review All of Marshall's inner thoughts about John were hilarious (while he was dining with Amity). I had to laugh when they almost ran into THE tree. This could be the start of an inside joke: "Did you make this just for me?" she purred... OMG, I'm going to steal that line! I loved how they worked together to make their marriage work, at least for a year, and then into forever. They had a bit of snafus, but who doesn't? It was a fun read, I laughed a lot. I'm glad we got a few additional details about the kidnapping and around the wedding. It's nice to know personal stuff in respects to the people from the planet Refuge too. I think this one has a little more bedroom scenes than the others - not complaining, just commenting.
Marshall saved a woman who was in trouble. He took her off the planet and to a refuge one but had to get married in order for her to stay. She agreed begrudgingly because she believed that he was not being truthful when they first met. Being a clown and all Marshall has missed out on a whole lot of opportunities. So he was on a huge learning curve even though he was in his 40s. She's in her 40s and having a talk over dinner is what sets their Adventure a flame. Road trip. Once the characters are starting to get to know each other, you want to cheer them on so that they have a chance. Good read no real suspenseful action in this book.

I like the idea of the duets. Two sets of characters creating an over arching story line. I wasn’t sure what to think about the idea of clones, but truly I found this rendition delightful. Each clone was his own person, but a copy of someone else. I really hope there are more stories written on Refuge, Cara Bristol has left the idea open for continuation at least! Double Bind is the second in the duet stories, and I would recommend reading book five first as book six picks up where five ends. Very enjoyable, good emotional tension without rehashing the characters issues over and over. Both want to move forward and create a future together. Totally recommend this book as well as the others in this series.
Love In The End Their relationship started out perfectly: a romantic dinner for 2. But Marshall had to tranquilize Amity for all four of them to be able to escape (Double Take). To Refuge. Where they had to get married for Amity to be admitted to the planet. She wasn’t very happy with the way it all went down and the difference in Marshall’s behavior. Life on Refuge made them both re-evaluate their opinions and priorities and made it possible to look at each other in a different way. Lovely, romantic story. Cara has done it again!! What another amazing hit!! I loved every moment of this book. I was so excited after the last book that she continued with the story with this amazing couple. Every moment of their struggle as they tried to navigate their relationship and troubles, and with the shock that even though they had an out in their marriage they just had to wait one year they find themselves falling for each other. Get ready to be taken on an amazing adventure and get ready to not put your book down until that adventure is done. I so can't wait to see what else is going to come our way. I highly recommend this book!!
This is the second of a duet. We were introduced to Amity and Marshall in Double Take, though you don't need to have read that book. Marshall put himself at risk to save Amity, then put himself out by offering to marry her when her application for Refuge was denied. Trouble was, Marshall had already met Amity, taken her for dinner, flirted with her, all while pretending to be someone else. Amity woke up on a ship headed for Refuge and found she was out of options. They go from prickly to cute and provide a bit of light escapism, as a good story should.

Marshall is a clone but he unlike others remembers being in the tube. Which has cause him to have issues with closed in spaces. Hence their bathroom. So he will start off his new marriage giving details he wouldn’t normally give out. But Amity find this as a good thing. Him opening up to her is the start to their relationship. They find common ground and slowly start moving towards each other and a future together. They get a few helping hands with Amity’s boss and her bestie. All things considered they make a great couple. And the surprise at the end rounds out the whole book.
I did read the first book in this duo and I was wondering where the author would take this one and it definitely does not disappoint. Loyal sweet and lonely Amity is looking for love. Relationship shy Marshall did not plan for a wife when he was aiming for escape. I loved how they learned to live and communicate. This is a sweet, entertaining and enjoyable that twists and turns. I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am leaving an honest review. I hope that there will be an update of all the characters living on Refuge.
Marshall and Amity are the final couple on Refuge at this point in time. Their marriage started out as a marriage of convenience. But as always in this series, love grows. Marshall was assigned to the woodworking shop and Amity was assigned to the weavers studio in the village called Artisan's Loft. The love scenes were mostly "under the covers." There was a small amount of drama and excitement, no dangerous events. It is fun reading about a culture that is so anachronistic, flipping between technology and 18th century methods.
Marshall and Amity definitely had a rough start. He used her and then abducted her up save her. Rocky start to a marriage! But I enjoyed seeing them become friends and then seeing them fall in love. It’s a great story about a marriage of convenience turning into something more. This one is a bit lighter on the spice. Still great, just not as detailed or as many scenes as she normally puts in a book. Great continuance of this series.
I did receive an ARC via Booksprout and this is my honest opinion.
Our two characters have extreme trust issues and clash because of how they met. They end up having to learn how to not only except their new living environment but that they could possibly be more together. Cara does a fantastic job of bringing you a world that is a mix of ancient ways and new technology. She is able to describe things so you can "see" what is happening. A great read and finish to a series. I always look forward to more from this author.

Double Bind by Cara Bristol is book 6 in the Cosmic Mates series. Marshall is a cyborg who helped escape his friend and two human women from secret ops to Refuge. He never expected to fall in love with Amity and she him, but they quickly realize they want a real marriage. A few things get in the way, mostly due to their insecurities, but in the end there’s a wonderful HEA.

Allow Connections to Grow. Marshall and Amity’s story is connected to John and Faith’s encounter that took place first. It was nice to see a quick recap of the key details that brought all four of these characters together. I think it was interesting that a planned less than romantic initial pairing would evolve through dialogue, greater understanding and old fashion attraction even on a New World.

Good entertaining story that's about Marshall our clone and Amity who co/owned a pottery shop called All Fired Up discovers Marshall used her to get information on John Bragg. This put her in danger and Marshall marries her with the Cosmic Mates program. What occurs was an engaging story. There's drama, action, and romance in their romantic adventure story. The characters were likable and their dialog interesting. I'd volunteer to read and review this copy I'd received.
This was another engaging adventure romance for the series and I have to say that Marshall and Amity have a very rough start. And he knows why. Lol! However, he starts to open up to her and she finds herself being open to more than a battle ground. As you follow them along, you'll really get caught up on the action, drama, danger, twists, chemistry and spice in this enemies-to-lovers romance. Well written and entertaining, this was a page turner for me :D
