Paul's second letter to Timothy is a letter written from one pastor to another, and it is designed to train, equip and encourage Timothy for the work of ministry. This volume is not an academic study of 2 Timothy, but rather an accessible and easily navigable teaching resource which will aid those examining 2 Timothy both to teach and for their own study. This is intended to accompany Introducing 2 Timothy.
What a great series of teaching resources, and what a superb contribution Jonathan Griffiths has made in this PT Resource. As with other books in the series, the author has been faithful to the overarching purpose of the book: to take the reader 'from text to message'. "Preach the word", he tells us, is "the very heart of this letter. This is Paul's central charge for Timothy, and it is the primary concern driving everything else he says to him." And that is indeed how Griffiths takes his readers through 2 Timothy. I am particularly grateful for the very helpful questions for use with a small group. But I am also hugely grateful for having had the letter opened up to me, from getting to grips with the text, appreciating the original context (and getting to know both Paul and Timothy better as my very real Christian brothers and fellow workers), to real and relevant applications for me and for my church.
