No Tears in Heaven speaks of the great joy of the Christian Faith – Heaven. This book brings together, in a new way, a number of Charles Haddon Spurgeon’s exhilarating teachings on Heaven. The writings of Spurgeon, in his typically beautiful and penetrating style, will deepen our anticipation of Heaven and challenge us to a closer walk with God.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
I honestly feel that this book helped increase my adoration of Jesus, something I had been praying for!
“…he had prepared a place for his people; it was not actually prepared, but it was in the purpose and plan of the eternal mind, and therefore might be regarded as already done.”
“But wherever I may go, when I do go, if Jesus is already there, I do not care where it is. Wherever he is shall be my heaven…”
“Why, methinks, to see him but for a minute, if we never saw him again, might furnish us with an eternity of bliss; but we shall gaze upon him, in his glory, day without night, never fainting, or flagging, or tiring, but delighting forever to behold him smile, forevermore to call him ours, and to see him still before us.”
“Oh! Christian, you think that there are slips between your lips and that cup of joy, but when you grasp the handle of that cup with your hand, and are drinking draughts of ineffable delight, then you will have no doubt or fear.”
“The surest method of getting rid of present tears is communion and fellowship with God”
So much more I could share, but read it for yourselves!
What a beautiful book. Tears (ironically) were shed while reading this book due to the beautiful imagery and words used. How encouraging this book is for the weary, broken, hurt, and expectant. Convicting in a gorgeous way. Cannot wait to revisit it again in the future.
Reading this made me cry tears of immense joy and anticipation for heaven. It makes you long for the last day while helping you to appreciae the joys of this world all the more.
Spurgeon preaches seven sermons on heaven. What's not to like? His message on "The Beatific Vision" of 1 John 3:2 is a particular highlight.
"Do you see that gas lamp? You will see the Saviour in the same fashion—naturally, positively, really, actually. You will not see him dreamily, you will not see him in the poetical sense of the word—see, you will not see him in the metaphorical meaning of the word; but positively, you shall 'see him as he is.'"
... I can never get enough of Charles Spurgeon! Others may disagree with me, because they disagree with some fine point of his theology. I don't agree with everything he ever wrote or said, but that does not prevent me from benefiting from the rest of it. The man had a way with words, for sure. This collection of sermons on Heaven and death will cause the careful reader to pause and say either "Hallejuah!" or "God be merciful to me, a sinner!"
