I have to confess I really enjoyed reading this book,
So at the others in this series I now wish to look!

This story is quite boring. The whole discussion of orchids feels very repetitive. The author has some interesting characters with unique past-times and she should use this more.
Charlie can see and speak with the dead, yet we only see 2 ghosts in the entire novel. I'm sadly done with this series.

I absolutely love this series. Dante is so controlled and to be surrounde by Charlie and Eleanor just makes a hilarious situation. The morally ambiguous situations are added to with the friendship of Marcus, the police officer. The mystery is always interesting giving you a few options, has hilarious setups, and wraps up with a satisfying ending. Already looking forward to the next release. A cozy mystery must read for anyone who enjoys Richard Osman type stories.

This is book 2 in the Retired Assassin mystery series but I was able to pick it up easily without having read book 1 first. The characters were instantly memorable and enough of their backstories introduced organically as the story unfolded to make me feel like I understood them. That’s not to say I don’t recommend reading book 1 however… more on that shortly!
I absolutely love love love the characters in this book, especially the core three of Dante (retired assassin), Eleanor (semi-retired con-artist) and Charlie (gardens and sees ghosts). They form an adorably quirky found family that just instantly worked for me and conveniently also works well in terms of combining their talents into investigating murder and mayhem!
The plot is full of warmth and humour, and is inevitably somewhat far-fetched but forms a clever and entertaining mystery plot anyway, if you are willing to suspend your disbelief. You begin by accepting that a retired assassin might attend their own version of online AA meetings to support them in abstaining from murder, one day and one annoying person at a time. Personally, I was sold immediately and happily went all in on everyone and everything in this book, upto, including and especially, Dante’s cat.
The paranormal elements, weaving together Charlie’s spiritual sensitivities with New Zealand cultural beliefs, flora and fauna, was lovely and integrated well to bring both local flavour and a touch of magic to proceedings. I was particularly touched by Charlie’s meeting with an old childhood friend at one point, in a way that had never occurred to me before and yet carried real emotional impact.
In short, this story was a brilliant read – right up my street, with a touch of everything I enjoy: friendship, the paranormal, murder mystery, found family, humour, a fascinating setting, a little romance and a cat. All written with warmth and wit, and very easy to get lost in.
I am definitely going back to catch myself up on the first book in the series now and have bookmarked the author in keen anticipation of more to come!

A paranormal cozy murder mystery that takes place in a unique small town in New Zealand, the author continues to explore her fascinating town and its unique inhabitants, many of whom have secret identities and unique backgrounds.
Including Dante, retired assassin, master wet worker, reluctant gardener and now cat owner. He’s trying to learn how to integrate into society, stop being an assassin (no small task when killers still pop up), and have a “normal life”. His small group of friends now include a neighbor and former con artist, Eleanor, and Charlie, a gardener who sees and communicates with ghosts.
Along with his AA group/(Assassins Anonymous), Dante has a full time just getting into the day. Here it’s an Orchid Society holding a special event in the town where events of the story are set to take place.
Kuttner uses New Zealand, from its gorgeous flora and fauna, to its connection to nature and its people here with the orchid and a special moth. The moth in particular turns into a powerful and beautiful aspect of the story.
Charlie, sweet yet deep in his beliefs connected to the land is one character who is evolving into a spectacular person. So is Eleanor. Rock on, Scooby gang!
The writing is so good. The flow of the story is fast, and the entire book goes way too quickly because it’s over before I’m ready for it to be.
Highly recommended. But start with the first book and then read on. Fabulous!

These books are a delight
The second in the retired assassin series was sweet, funny, and properly twisty. If you’re the type to figure your whodunit out, the clues are present. If you like to ride with the characters, it’s a fun one.
I laughed out loud, gasped, (even though I thought it was a setup I was still dismayed) and was satisfied with the ending.

Love a light on the palate murder mystery - with ghosts!! especially one thats actually set in and written by an author from Aotearoa NZ. While the town in which the story is set is called Te Kohe (indigenous Māori place names were often kept as names of small towns, and the use of calling our major cities by their Māori name is growing) the town and some residents were like caricatures of people i knew growing up, living in places that hung tenaciously to their idea of "home" (otherwise known as Great Britain).
The characters are charming, a couple of whom are kind of lightweight versions of characters in Richard Osman's books.
Native moths and native orchids are a lovely touch; I actually only found out recently about our Native Orchids, a friend i haven't seen for years collects and grows Orchids and told me that the hothouse in my city's botanical gardens has varieties- absolutely stunning and some of nature's finest, delicate artistry. I can absolutely imagine people fighting to own something that is rare, even a plant, just because they can; as well as purists versus humans assistance.
The Pūriri moth (or Ghost Moth)is the perfect insect for this story especially as it is about a rare orchid known as the "Ghost Orchid". Charlie can see, hear and talk to ghosts & as Tangata Whenua he knows that in the mythology of his people the Pūriri was seen as a spiritual messenger, or an ancestors ghost.

lovely read
Not quiiiiite as good as 1 but close. Happily, all the characters (including the cat) are growing. The whodunnit part is perhaps a bit predictable but still fun. Easily skimmed-in a good way- when you want to be entertained without working too hard at it. Looking forward to #3!

OK, damn it. A five star
I hadn't expected to score so high but, apart from the story, all the characters have developed beautifully and believably, even the cat. I can forgive the heavy doses of Deus ex Machina needed to make the plot work.
I want to meet everybody again, but how on earth is Naomi going to set up another mystery in Te Kohe? I particularly want to see Dante dealing with a pack of kittens.

A delightful cosy mystery about orchids, relationships, and trying really hard to not kill people
About the only thing I know about orchids is that they are incredibly fussy plants that bloom at the store and never again - and yet this lovely mystery had me absorbed in the world of exotic orchid hunters as they hold a conference in a little town in New Zealand and one expert topples to the floor, dead. Our eclectic crew of sleuths - titular retired assassin Dante, gardener and ghost whisperer Charlie, and international woman of intrigue Eleanor - must solve the murder before conference finishes and the attendees scatter back around the globe. Joining the cast are an English Lord, an Italian scientist, a French collector, and a mysterious redhead - oh, and Inspector Avery, who is definitely on holiday and wants nothing to do with mysterious deaths and the even more mysterious Eleanor.
Written in short, engaging chapters, the characters reel you right in. I simply love to read about Dante and his struggles to maintain his no-kill streak. His former profession colours his perspective in the most entertaining manner, until a first date is approached with just as much gravity (if not more) than the murder at the conference. Oh, and his cat is getting fat.
Overall, if you enjoyed the first one or are simply a fan of cosy mysteries with a touch of the paranormal, this is definitely the book for you. As a kiwi, I also adored the little touches of home in the narrative - from the native flora and fauna, to geography, colloquialisms, and the overall vibe. I just felt the whole book was such a treat!

Dante and his friends are drawn into another investigation on a suspicious death when one of the prominent orchid expert in town dies during the orchid convention. Of course, the only reason they suspect foul play is because Charlie saw the deceased's spirit right after he died and he was clearly trying to tell Charlie something of importance. Something Charlie, unfortunately, didn't catch in the chaos of the moment.
Now he, Dante, and Eleanor are trying to figure out who could have killed the professor. They're hampered by the fact it looked like an accident, the suspects are only there for the convention (which isn't going to last forever), and Inspector Avery is in town. He SAYS he's on vacation, but his mere presence means they need to stay mostly within the confines of the law. Mostly.
The good news is that Eleanor and Dante are experts at working around the law. They're flexible moral stance on rules and regulations give them plenty of wiggle room in all things investigative. Also, it's possible the Inspector really IS on holiday. So, you know, maybe he'll be more of an asset than an obstacle.
Meanwhile, Dante is venturing out into entirely new territory and he's...kind of terrible at dating. Small talk, too, but that's not a surprise. Eleanor is handing out sage advice while flirting with the Inspector. Charlie is his usual sunshiny, sweet self. Who just so happens to se ghosts.
I'm REALLY enjoying this series. Watching scarily intense Dante trying to blend in is a delight. His worry over his cat, his disaster of a date, and his extreme protectiveness of his new friends is *chef's kiss*

I do love when I find a series that makes me want to immeditely read the next book, I call it chain-reading. I found myself doing that in December with The Thursday Murder Club series and now this one.
I almost didn't want to read the next one as I enjoyed the first book so very much. Such a cool premise with highly engaging characters in a great setting. But I dove in after finishing Guide to Gardening, even before reviewing it, and I am so glad I did. This one had plenty of twists and turns and WHAT moments for me. I love those.
The main thing, I've found, with books that stick with me is the way characters are portrayed. The chemistry between each other and how they seem to me. Do I want to meet them, be their friend, pop them upside the back of the cranium for being as crappe-weaselly as they are. This series has all of that.
I also like learning new things, this time it's orchids. Not that I have the patience to grow them, but they are exotic and they are flowers. I like flowers and plants, just not fussy ones. I still like learning about them though. The orchid symposium is a great setting for gathering all the likely suspects and new ones too.
And it's set in New Zealand? A bucket-list location for me.
I can absolutely recommend this book, series and author. I just pre-ordered book 3 of this and downloaded a book from another of her series. I'm looking forward to reading all of her books.

I also like learning new things, this time it's orchids. Not that I have the patience to grow them, but they are exotic and they are flowers. I like flowers and plants, just not fussy ones. I still like learning about them though. The orchid symposium is a great setting for gathering all the likely suspects and new ones too.
And it's set in New Zealand? A bucket-list location for me.
I can absolutely recommend this book, series and author. I just pre-ordered book 3 of this and downloaded a book from another of her series. I'm looking forward to reading all of her books.

My previous review was This is a very synthetic review give more books in this series. I need more stories featuring Dante the characters in this book and the lovely setting. A humorous and multilayered story that kept me hooked. Good storytelling solid plot.

It is such a pleasure to read. The retired assassin only wants a quiet life with his orchids, yet trouble keeps finding him like it knows his schedule.
The mystery works especially well here, with clues that look simple at first but slowly reveal a deeper game behind the missing orchids and the suspicious visitors who never share the full truth. The side characters shine too, from the neighbour who pretends not to notice anything to the friend who offers help while hiding their own secrets.
The mix of calm moments and sudden danger is the charm of this series. Kuttner keeps the humour light, the twists clever, and the characters easy to love. I smiled through the whole story and enjoyed every chapter.
Highly recommended.

I have read The Retired Assassin’s Guide to Orchid Hunting as a standalone and I still found it to be enjoyable. A cosy mystery with a side of paranormal. With good pacing and some lovely characters this was a quick read. I am sure that I will be back to read more of this series.

Naomi has done it again! I was kept awake reading all hours of the night. Dante, Eleanor and Charlie make a great team, friendship, fighting crime and getting themselves into trouble. Add in Avery, a detective who gets a bit annoyed by these 3 Amigos, and you have some good old entertainment. Not to mention the discreet steam building up between Avery and Eleanor.
Dante is a retired Hitman, Eleanor retired from the forged art scene and Charlie the loveable village innocent. In this book they try and solve the murder of Charlie's friend, an Orchidist. With many people in town for an Orchid convention and 3 people on their suspect list can they solve the murder in time? Avery showing up for the convention while on holiday might just throw in a spanner in the works. Add in cats, poisons, and another undercover MI6 agent and the story gets crazier keeping the pace fast and fun.
Naomi's books are like reading a mix of Janice Hallett and Richard Osman, and I love both of those authors. I truly hope all 3 keep the books coming!

I absolutely LOVED this book! An exceptional follow-up to the Retired Assassin’s Guide to Country Gardening, where readers are charmed by the former assassin, Dante, his sleuth friends, and the lovely towns-folk of Te Kohe, NZ. Dante reminded me of what Murderbot would be like if it were human, and the mental narrative that plays through his mind is laugh-out-loud funny! Several times I stopped to read a passage aloud to my husband simply because it was so cleverly written and humorous. The story’s concept, revolving around an international orchid symposium taking place in a tiny seaside town, was curious enough to begin with, but once Dante, Eleanor (former art thief), and Charlie (the ghost-whisperer) had narrowed down the murder suspect pool to three primary characters, the author drops clues, provides misdirection, and subtlety throughout, leaving the reader guessing right up to the final chapter. Kuttner’s series is an excellent addition to the cozy mystery genre!

Nice, neat murder mystery with lovely cast of characters. Good holiday beach read.
My problem points: Some odd plot choices at the end there. I also feel like Charlie’s abilities are sort of shoehorned into a world that doesn’t necessarily need that supernatural twist. Or maybe I actually want that side of this world embraced more, rather than being a weird extra quirk that’s convenient for pushing the plot forwards every now and again. Not sure.
I also find the extremely short chapters a little annoying, since this is supposed to be an adult book. I am not a dopamine driven child/YA reader jonesing for a fix and do not get some weird sense of accomplishment when I finish a paragraph. In fact, when a chapter is only one page long I feel slightly insulted.
Having said all that, I do find that I like the dynamic of the crime fighting trio, and the setting, enough to keep me going back for more. A cosy crime novel and an easy read.

The Retired Assassin’s Guide to Orchid Hunting is Book 2 in the series, but don’t let that put you off if you haven’t read Book 1. I read this without having read the first book and still found it a great, very accessible read.
I really loved that the series is set in New Zealand rather than the usual UK or US locations, which made it feel fresh and a bit more unique.
The humour was spot on, the characters were a lot of fun, and there was real warmth in the relationships. Charlie was particularly interesting, especially with the paranormal elements woven into the story.
A really good cosy mystery with plenty of twists and turn, and as you can probably guess, I did not correctly guess the killer… 😂
Out now, and definitely worth picking up if you enjoy cosy crime (and learning about orchids!).

A good story all over the place
After reading the first Retired Assassin book, I wasn’t sure where this whole bit was going to go. To my great pleasure, Ms. Kuttner has done a very nice job of character development in this follow up, building on certain backstories started in the first book, and enhancing personalities with interesting foibles in this murder mystery. At first, it was difficult to see how anything related to orchids was going to result in such an active investigation, but it did work, with the necessary number of suspects, trip ups, direction changes and plotting to keep the story moving. My only complaint is Dante’s ineptitude with Andrea, but it works out in the end thanks to a threatened party. So, I’ll rate this one high on the notion that some interesting things happen in the next book as well.

Almost as good as the first
I feel in love with these characters in the first volume. And the author continues to write excellent dialog and fascinating quirky plot.
Unfortunately, the tension of the tightly wound assassin character seemed to fade in this second book. Dante is not a much the central character, and is oddly less in control of his responses as he accommodates himself to those around him. I think something was lost there.
One final kudo: these books contain no tripping hazards. I hate books that are littered with extraneous commas, wrong word choices, and plot mistakes. Naomi Kuttner is a top quality author who clearly knows her craft.

2025 bk 174. I loved the sequel equally as I loved the first of the series. The characters are still fresh, we continue to see Dante grow into acting like a regular non- assassin, type person. Charles continues to mature and love plants. When a symposium on orchids comes to town you would think Charles would be in 7th heaven, but instead he is worried, very worried. When the local naturalist dies on stage and Charles gets a visit, well the friends go into action. Wonderful book, well plotted out.
