Anna Black suggests short and simple meditations that can be used throughout the working day to strengthen focus and concentration, enhance working relationships and improve empathy - all of which help you to perform well and keep calm at work, whatever your job.
This was a really useful book for me. I work in an office environment, and often I struggle to find ways to practice mindfulness and meditative practices when I am surrounded by other people. This book gave a lot of useful practices, tips and tricks I could employ in a work setting, without just suddenly going into a lotus position and saying 'ommmmmm' surrounded by bemused colleagues.
I will definitely be checking out Anna Black's other, more general mindfulness book, as I really liked how she broke down the subject, and provided different levels of mindfulness practices that I can refer back to whenever I want.
However, I did have a few issues with this book. At times, it could get a little repetitive - nothing wrong with what was being repeated, but I felt like I had memorised the book after I'd finished with it. Also, this book is BADLY in need of further editing - there were spelling mistakes and missed words throughout, and that made me lower my rating considerably. How it got into publication in this state I will never know.
If you are looking for accessible, work-based mindfulness practices though, this is a great place to start.
Centred towards those with office jobs and desks, 'Mindfulness @ Work' only really deals with incorporating mindfulness in the boardroom and remembering to turn off your work phone (did Blackberry sponsor this book? I've never seen so many references to such an unpopular brand!). I'm interested in seeing whether I can incorporate the Mindful Minute into my working life - counting the average number of breaths that you take in a minute, and taking that many throughout the day to estimate the minute - but the rest of the advice seems to be things I've read before: anchor yourself, keep your feet on the ground, don't read work emails at home. There's also a large introduction to mindfulness at the start of the book. If you're not already familiar, that makes this an awesome place to start! If you already know the basics, skip ahead - you won't miss anything.
I found a lot of the book very repetitive and at sometimes poorly written, but it has me fairly interested in mindful meditation so I will probably look for classes in my area to attend. A good introduction overall.
Though the book looks cute, it's full of terrible editing, psychology I've heard a million times, and the repeated advice to pay attention to the breath.
ok book....it is a bit hard to read if you have no connection to or experience with mindfulness. It felt a bit abstract to me....now that may very well be because mindfulness is a bit abstract (if you have not practiced before)...but yue book gives nice reminders how to reduce stress
