English title: My Darling, Coax Me
Really enjoyed this historical novel and blew through it in a day. It was refreshing to read a story in this genre without transmigration and rebirth themes. The FL does have some slightly precognitive abilities which gives her knowledge about which prince will win the fight for the throne, so she has an advantage there, but that's it. Everything else she figures out as she goes instead of relying on prior knowledge. I was a bit frustrated with the ML in general and also with the romance in the last part of the story, so my actual rating is closer to 4.5 stars, but I'm rounding up to 5 based on my overall enjoyment.
Please note that the romance here, while done well, is quite angsty and somewhat bittersweet. If you're looking for a super fluffy story with sweet scenes, don't read this. The ML doesn't acknowledge his feelings for the FL for the longest time and treats her poorly, while the FL treats him indifferently for even longer and only realizes her feelings near the end.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
The FL is Yun Ling, a lowly maid in the palace who dreams of the unfavored 6th prince and our ML, Xie Jue, becoming emperor. When she realizes her dreams may be prophetic based on other dream events coming true, she decides to take a gamble and requests reassignment to the Cold Palace to serve the unfavored prince. Her gamble pays off, as she gets closer to the prince and is promoted to a high female official position when he becomes crown prince.
While she initially is happy with her promotion as that means a relatively stable life, she eventually gets sick of all the nonstop schemes and longs for freedom from the crown prince and his extreme possessiveness, so she cleverly bides her time and manages to escape from the ML's reach when he's distracted. However, her freedom doesn't last long, and she's able to enjoy 3 years away from the palace before the ML finds her (or rather, I should say he coincidentally runs into her) again.
The book can roughly be divided into a couple of arcs:
1. when Yun Ling is a palace maid
2. when the ML gets named crown prince and the FL also gets promoted to shanggong (official female position that helps manages the back palace logistics)
3. the period when she runs away and lives her life freely
4. her return back to the capital and eventually the palace
I really enjoyed this novel because Yun Ling is a smart girl. Lots of people try to take advantage of her because they think she's just a lowly palace maid who hasn't been educated and doesn't know how to do things properly, but she keeps proving them wrong again and again. Also, she's very practical when it comes to her life goals, which was very refreshing. She just wants to avenge her beloved ones and have a peaceful ordinary life until retirement. That's it. There's no desire for more power.
As soon as Yun Ling realizes the ML has feelings for her, she considers it a "deadly poison" rather than a blessing, because the ML's affections make achieving her life goals impossible. And ironically his decision to make her his cefei (side consort) makes her more determined to escape. This excerpt from the book sums it up nicely:
She wasn't someone who clung to power; her position as a Shanggong was sufficient. When she reached the appropriate age, she would happily retire.
As for the Crown Prince's insignificant and abnormal affections for her—affections she wouldn't even reveal to outsiders—she found them utterly repugnant.
He was the lofty future monarch, with an ingrained arrogance and a sharp, critical eye. Coupled with the bloody feud between his mother and the palace maids, a chasm separated him from her, and he would never allow these feelings to be known to the world.
Therefore, once he establishes the Crown Princess, it will all naturally fade away.
She also thought this was excellent.
Therefore, she also hoped the Crown Princess would arrive soon.
What I found annoying was the ML. Xie Jue finds himself attracted to the FL early on, but despises her (and himself for being weak) for feeling this way because of his prior hatred against palace maids. Because of this, he almost has a love/hate relationship with her, where he'll let her get away with stuff that no one else would. At the same time, if she refuses to do something for him, she pretty much doesn't have a choice and is forced to do it anyways. Eventually it gets to the point where Yun Ling notices the level of possessiveness he feels towards her and feels frightened by it, which is definitely a factor in her decision to escape. She can't even talk to a guard and accept a casual snack from outside the palace from him without getting grilled by the ML. He needs to chill.
Still, it was nice to see how Xie Jue protects the FL in his own way. When she goes out of line to punish the eunuch who tortured her master and another close friend to death, he protects her from the consequences of her actions. Another example would be when the noble ladies try to belittle her or make her look bad during the consort selection, he'll step up and speak out for her. He called out his cousin who was trying to take advantage of their familial relationship and put the FL down "narrow-minded, vicious, and incredibly foolish." Ouch. He really doesn't hold back with his words even with females.
The pacing of the story moved quickly. Xie Jue is already named crown prince by chapter 14, and before that they were already intimate when the ML was drugged up with an aphrodisiac and needed to get it out of his system. She escapes the palace by chapter 41. I was pretty surprised by the quick pacing, but I'm definitely not complaining! I love that the author was able to go into detail for so many schemes to make it a satisfying read without getting too bogged down in the weeds.
The romance drives a lot of the story, but outside of that, the author does a good job of fleshing out the actual story around the stability of the throne. The ML has to deal with numerous political schemes. First it's the other princes that vie for the position of crown prince, and even after the ML's position as crown prince is established, he has to deal with rebellious extended family who also aspire for the throne. The FL and ML cooperate well together to put on an act and flush out his enemies, and I really enjoyed reading about their working together.
I'm very satisfied with how the story ended, with one small exception. I really wish that the 5th princess and her husband could have had a good ending. It's real unfortunate that her husband is a loyal retainer of the ML, while she happens to be the daughter of the consort who caused the ML's mother's death. Once the princess finds out that it's her husband that poisoned her mother to death on the ML's orders, there's no more hope for their relationship.

Yun Ling's tears fell. “You forbid me from associating with others, but your so-called indulgence and affection—is it to make me your cefei? I shared life and death with you in the Cold Palace, accompanying you from obscurity to glory. I was endlessly grateful to Your Highness, content to be a female official, willing to serve Your Highness for life. Your Highness treats everyone equally, yet because of your past grievances and prejudices against palace maids, you always belittle me. You have feelings for me, yet you won't even allow our relationship to be seen, and you even want me to choose a proper wife for you.”
But do you know that in the Palace, if there's only affection and no status, your love is a fatal poison? I might not even know how I die one day!”
“Well said,” Xie Jue slowly turned around, lowering his head to forcefully wipe away the tears under her eyes. “Do you think that with your lowly palace maid status, I can make you what?”
“My status as a palace maid is lowly,” Yun Ling, suppressing her tears, looked up and said each word clearly, “but I would rather be a commoner's wife than a consort in the East Palace.”

Now it's time for the ML to be honest with the FL about his feelings, in his blunt vicious way
Xie Jue stood before her, his voice colder than the moonlight, yet he spoke with an unprecedented gentleness, “All my life, I have truly hated palace women. I don't allow myself to develop feelings for a palace woman.”
“But for these past few years, my heart and eyes have only been able to see you. I can't bear to look at other women.”
He had to admit it.
During the three years she ran away, instead of anger and hatred, he actually missed her deeply.
Yun Ling's eyes widened, and her chest trembled slightly.
She thought, he was full of possessiveness and a desire to control her. He was high and mighty, never giving her a choice, never understanding what she wanted. But now, she felt that she didn't really understand him either.
Only now did she realize that his feelings for her went beyond mere possessiveness and a slight affection.
Perhaps the incident with Empress Zhaohui had taught him to repress his emotions from a young age. Sometimes, he repressed them so well that even she hadn't noticed.
“Your Highness... I…”
“But I can't tolerate any sand in my eyes.”
Yun Ling was stunned.
As she stood there frozen, Xie Jue's tone changed, the gentle expression on his face vanishing. Looking down at her face, he slowly leaned down and forcefully embraced her, holding her so tightly it felt like he wanted to meld her into his very bones. His voice was harsh,
“Ah Ling, I appoint you as the Crown Princess, and from now on, your heart and eyes must belong only to me.”
“Don't you dare run away again, or I truly will kill you.”

So much angst in this relationship!!
Yun Ling's fingers curled tightly, her small face ashen.
How could he… how could he… He knew her weakness and used it to push her to the limit.
Tears streamed down her face. “Every time I resist, you use your power to threaten me, forcing me to compromise. Is this the Crown Prince's love?”
“But your coercion is nothing but torment to me. We've been through so much together, from humble beginnings to where we are now. I truly don't want to deceive you anymore. This time, I'm giving you my complete and honest truth: I don't want to enter the Palace, I don't want to be your Crown Princess. I hope you will grant me this.”

Xie Jue is tyrannical, volatile, and frighteningly intelligent, ruling through coercion and fear. His growing attraction to a palace maid disgusts him, exposing a weakness he despises and tries to smother through control.
Yun Ling is cautious, clever, and constantly alert, relying on her wit and restraint to survive. Lowly and powerless, she understands exactly where she stands and wants nothing more than to live long enough to leave the palace behind. Status and power mean nothing to her—only freedom.
The story is fast-paced and tightly focused on their tense dynamic. What exists between them isn’t romance but control and survival. Xie Jue’s desire manifests as possession, while Yun Ling sees his attention as both protection and threat. At its core, their relationship is a struggle neither can escape unscathed.

Wow didn't think I read it in a day - but this was a short read. Also I like that in this book while it was a smidge ... mmm not coercive - esp not compared to my previous read, but a ~yandere to tsundere ML ... but within romance bounds. I like that she successfully runs, and he doesn't do horrible shit to her like in the previous book - lol UNINTENTIONALLY read two such similar ones in a row.
The communication, the way he always let her win... he definitely caught feelings and knew he was in deeper than she was. He gave her space, and she had a lot more agency.
It was never stated but I still lowkey think she was a transmigrator.
I can see myself re-reading this book.
I liked the TN [mostly] and some of the comments were fun too. Would def read more from the site as well.
Solid B, maybe B+ => this is my type of cat nip, the obsessive madly in love ML, but one who GIVES FL SPACE AND DEFERS TO HER. She really calls all the shots.

The plot, the characters, the character progression, intrigue, climax- everything was bomb! The translator also did a great job! Cudos to them💗💗
Our main characters, Xie Jue and Yun Ling, are match made in heaven which might not seem like it at first. The novel has angst, sweet endearing moments with wife chasing crematorium elements sprinkled. Xie Jue is the perfect mix of yandere and tsundere. To be honest, the conflict between the ML and FL is so real considering their past and background and their social settings. In my opinion, the ML treating the way he did to FL was natural, or even expected, no way justifiable though. The same goes for FL. Her reaction to his actions is also extremely valid. Both of them needed to clash and grow, only then their relationship could turn from toxic to healthy.
Xie Jue was not the most yandere here I've read. However, I absolutely liked him. Even from the first chapter I couldn't hate him much.
And how can I forget about Xiao Qibai and Xie Jinjia😭😭😭. Just know, the author gave them a HE and saved a soul tonight🙏🏻
I'm not gonna say much more as the synopsis already reveals the premise pretty much and any further, I'll spoil the novel. Absolutely would recommend tho!!!!

enjoyed the story but sadly, they just missed that spark for me. everything felt high stakes and certain moments made you feel like you were on a knife's edge and then suddenly, ALL that tension was gone. i just wished the transition from the tension to when the leads begin developing feelings for each other was better, would've had me hooked for sure.
regardless, it is a well written book. i enjoyed the little notes and glossary left by the translator! i just wished i felt a bit more of the chemistry and pull for the couple. i adore their lil family though <3

I really liked this one! One of the only CN novels I've read where the couple (well, the Ml) try work out their toxicity and power dynamic issues. A certain side couple's fate was so sad though. At first I thought their fate was open ended but thankfully the last side story mentions that they got back together.

This got all the elements that I love in my romance novels (the angst and crazy butterflies). Not too heavy on the political side (which is a plus).
What solidified my love are the side stories. I wish I could read more (I felt robbed that we didn’t get to read about QB and XJ more)
