Eighteen-year-old Dorothy St. James can’t control her magic. To avoid arrest, she locks herself at home and buries her nose in her experiments. But a kidnapper called the Rook is on the loose, and his victims keep turning up insane. When Dorothy’s father is taken, she must exchange her beakers for bravery and find the Rook’s trail—the problem is, only one person ever has: a mysterious masked hero.
Ashley Gardner unabashedly casts illusions, using his charm to flit between the upper ton and the magical underbelly below. When Dorothy accuses him of knowing the masked hero’s identity, he flatly denies it. Until the clever beauty intercepts a communique he desperately needs.
They strike a bargain: she’ll give him the message in exchange for three clues to point her in the right direction. But Ashley won’t make them easy. In fact, he’ll make them impossible, because he has his own dangerous reasons for keeping Dorothy away—and Ashley always gets what he wants.
Through dazzling ballets, wild carnivals, and death-defying train rides, Dorothy must use her wits and magic to solve Ashley’s riddles and unravel her budding feelings for the illusionist mastermind behind them. The masked hero isn’t who she believes, and the Rook is closer than she suspects. While the game was always rigged against her, returning her father—mind intact—might just cheat her out of a heart too.
Jessica Scarlett writes amazing books and lame author bios. She hates the pressure of encapsulating everything about herself in a hundred words or less, because she’s too divergent, dynamic, and different for that. And simultaneously not that interesting.
She is the author of the Wycliffe Family Series, Slanted London series, and a couple plays. When not writing, she loves composing music, laughing with her four kids, or doing life on a ranch in Utah with her cinnamon-roll husband.
I just finished reading Town of Shadows by Jessica Scarlett and I can’t even put into words how incredible this book is!!! I absolutely adore Jessica’s Regency series and now I’m in love with her Gaslamp Fantasy book too! Can this really be her debut novel in this genre! It blew me away!
This book took me on the most wild, unpredictable, magical, shocking adventure, and I enjoyed every single second of it!
The characters in this story are incredible! Ashley is mysterious, and charming. Dorothy is clever, determined, and lovely. I also adored Miles and Emmeline! The characters felt so real, and I’m sooo invested in their story!!!!
The magical version of Victorian London that she created blew my mind! I love the magical system, the mystery, the cat and mouse chase, the riddles, suspense, and shocking revelations. The banter was amazing plus the chemistry and slow burn romance. I couldn’t get enough of it all!
This book is brilliant, clever, and so unique. As I read I was smiling, my heart broke, I was gasping out loud, swooning, my heart was pounding and I think my jaw dropped to the floor at the end! I cannot wait for book two.
This book will suck you in and you’ll never want to leave! This is an absolutely incredible heart racing adventure that is irresistible! I loved it so sooo much!!!

Town of Shadows by Jessica Scarlett
I was intrigued from the first page and couldn't stop! After finishing, I just had to sit and process my feelings for a bit. What a rollercoaster that was! I also don't think I will sleep well until book 2 releases. The vibes of this book were exactly what my heart, soul, and mind was craving. My favorite historical time period besides Regency to read about is Victorian London because of the spooky, mysterious, darkened streets. If Dread Penny Society series by Sarah M Eden, Every Hour Until Then by Gabrielle Meyer, and Caraval by Stephanie Garber had a baby, it would be this book. If you love the mysterious vibes of those books, but want some magic too, then look no further than the Slanted London series.
I loved all of the POVs. Honestly, I usually don't like multiple POVs, but because Jessica organizes them by chapter, they are easy to understand and follow. It was fascinating to get each characters' perspective and I am here for it!
I loved all of the characters- Emmeline is quirky and lovable. Dorothy is fiercely determined and stubborn and so sooo smart. Miles is loyal and kind. Ashley is mysterious, also stubborn, and many other things.I think I saw myself in both Emme and Miles a touch-loyal and quirky. I really loved their POVs and getting to know them.
Woah, her uncle is a piece of work! But I love her Aunt Marie!
This book had the best plot twists, the best characters, the most unique magic system, a clear plot, riddles that were hard to solve. My heart was pounding so hard and I couldn't read this one fast enough. I found my new favorite genre in this book and couldn't get enough! Masterfully done, Jessica! This book will be my new obsession!
Favorite Parts: Miles and Ashley intro Magic system Magic experiment Their meeting Ballet Carnival and knife throwing Lacing up her dress Button factory The auction! Riddles All the plot twists and romance SO many parts but if I listed them, they would spoil the book, so I won't do that!

Thank you to the Author and publisher for the review copy. All gushings and thoughts are my own.
Town of Shadows is Jessica Scarlett's first venture into fantasy, specifically gaslamp fantasy. For me, a Jessica Scarlett (see bio) and fantasy stan, this was a dream come true. Safe to say, I had garnered a healthy number of expectations. Some of them were met, some weren't. Overall, I was kinda let down. This is a perfectly good book for someone who isn't me. It was likened to Caraval and Enola Holmes. It surpassed those two easily. This can give an idea as to where my expectations stood.
My number one problem, the root of all problems really, was Dorothy. It pains me to say this... she is the worst heroine Jessica has written so far. It's hard to believe she did. Did someone ghostwrite her parts? She was dull, boring and soulless. I hated being in her brain. It was like being in the mind of a barely-functioning robot. She was supposed to be a brilliant mastermind and a genius but that did not translate at all. Ultimately, the whole plot fell flat and redundant. She enrolls in a game with our hero, Ashley, for clues to find her dad, who was kidnapped by the villain. The lack of urgency on her part and agreeing to play a fun game when her dad might as well be dead?! She didn't realize that her new pals Ashley and Miles might have magic until the last moment. I got face-palmed so hard. She was dumb and ruined the book. Whenever I read about her curly brown hair and blue eyes, I stopped reading and that's why it took me a month to finish this. Her being insufferable and a caricature meant I did not care one bit about the romance, the sector Jessica specialises in. I did not see what Ashley saw. Hence, it was lacklustre and frankly, a waste of time. I am distraught, truly. Those pages of insta-attraction and lusty glances could've been utilised for more world-building. Now, we come to world-building. It was barely touched upon. The magic was hardly explored. Dorothy rarely used hers (yeah, she was scared of getting caught but come on, you're already doing risky stuff. Use it. Also, her being afraid of stepping out of her comfort zone was mentioned in the start, which was cute because aw, relatable, but two hours later, Ashley is raving about her being brave and BOLD. Ugh... moving on). My favorite world-building was in their dreams, of Egypt and sailing. My favorite parts were all of Miles and Ashley history, period. They had more chemistry than Dorothy and Ashley. Instead, we got bland, forced heterosexuality. Whatever is cooking up with Miles and Emmeline, leave it be. He can't talk to women for a reason and it's not because he was mute once. Jessica ate up the Ashley/Miles dynamic. I'm a sucker for a complex bond formed by trauma and fate. We need more of that in the sequel. Ashley Gardner was the star of the show. It's no secret Jessica excels at writing male characters more and this proved it again. He gave a mix of Kaz Brekker from SoC and Jacks from OUaBH but better? He was more rounded and real. In my eyes, he was the only main character. The only thing holding him back was his fascination with dimwit Dorothy. I truly will never understand what he was so entranced by... we can't all be perfect I guess. Other than that, he was perfect. Abolish all other pov chapters, especially Emmeline. She is so stereotypical, it hurt.
I was a harsh critic but I had reason to be. I will still say, this book and this author deserve more noise, more clicks, more sales, more numbers, more everything. They stand with the names mentioned above in terms of quality. There is a huge audience for this series and I hope it reaches them. It's better than the majority of the trad-published stuff released in 2025. I stand on that.
I got to read an early copy of this book and oh my GOODNESS I am obsessed! Please enjoy my review in reactions and quotes. And add this book to your TBR asap!
* We’re barely a page in and I’m already SO ready * Bum bum buuuhhhh *cue dramatic music* * Oh man, I’m already in love with Ashley and it’s been approximately 3 paragraphs 😅 * I am here for this Ashley and Miles banter 👏 * That meeting in the bookshop? Utter perfection * Okay, Emme is hilarious * Dang, girl! That’s dedication! * This Miles and Ashley bromance is everything 😭🫶 * The way my mouth just DROPPED open * Ahhh the tension is so good! * Oh, Ashley… 💔 * Hehehe that bidding scene * Nooooo * I KNEW IT! * I’m crying 😭 * Okay but the TENSION * Um actually, what?! * No, no, no! * Nooooo
“Finally, he looked at me, and the starlight danced on one side of his face like it, too, was desperate to touch him.”
“I scooted against the wall and lowered my head against his uninjured shoulder. The moment I did, his breath deepened, like my distance had been the real wound hurting him.”
“And who would you be reporting, exactly? The man who dazzled you in a bookshop?” “I believe the report would read, ‘The man who irritated me in a bookshop,’ actually.” “An unnecessarily long description.”
“What if I didn’t want to be safe anymore? What if I wanted to be wild and adventurous like him? With him.”
Thank you, Jessica, for writing such an incredible story and for letting me read it! I cannot wait to read book 2!
🪶 Release Date: July 1, 2025 🪶 . . . This was one of those books that instantly sucked me in as soon as I began reading! It was nothing short of an absolute work of art—filled with mystery, intrigue, and a modest dusting of romance. The magic was immensely intriguing and, ultimately, did the most to get me invested in this story. Everything—from the characters to the writing style of the book—worked together to create this masterpiece, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book once it’s released because that ending was something else! 🤯
I cannot express enough just how much I LOVED this book! The characters were divine—especially a certain Mr. Ashley Gardner, with his endless charm 😏 I thoroughly enjoyed the wild adventure this book took me on with the characters, through the streets, over the rooftops, and deep into the underbelly of London, searching for the ever-elusive Rook and Samaritan! Dorothy was a fabulous FMC, and her involvement in her father’s experiments added such fun dimension to her character! Her first encounter with Ashley simply has to be noted because of how utterly delightful and comedic it was 🤭 This book had some of the BEST side characters as well—they worked so well with the MCs and, honestly, stole the show at times!
The ✨magic✨ was extraordinary! Jessica Scarlett did a fantastic job of creating one of the most fascinating magic systems I’ve ever read about! I loved how it was explained so well, yet it still left the readers with a sense of intrigue and wonder about its unknown intricacies. I found the aspect of it being illegal to use magic added such a fun twist to this story, upping the stakes that much more! . . . I received a complimentary arc from NetGalley. All opinions expressed are purely my own.
This is one of those books that finishes and you just stare at the ceiling, trying to process everything. I felt like I needed to immediately read it again. Honestly, I probably will because it is just that good.
Things I loved about this book: -The banter. Jessica Scarlett always delivers when it comes to banter, and this was no exception. There were several quips that had me laughing out loud and wanting to highlight whole conversations. I loved when Miles and Ashley were going back and forth. I'm a sucker for two guys just bantering for pages. Dorothy also brought her A game to put Ashley in his place. -The Romance. It had the delicious slow burn with them fighting their attraction for each other. When stuff finally happens you squee, and then just a few chapters later, your jaw is dropping and begging for the next book. -The Twists. I love books that keep me guessing. There were points in this book where I definitely thought I knew how it was going to work out, then things change completely. THEN CHANGE AGAIN! I felt like I needed a wall and red string just to try and figure out where things are going in this series but I am here for the ride. -The world building. This was just a fun romp through Victorian England *with magic*. There was the pomp of the upper class along with a super magical seedy underbelly.
I have been a fan of Jessica Scarlett for a while and was excited for this new book. It's a complete genre change for her, but she really does shine. It feels like she has been writing historical/romance/fantasy for ever because this book is a perfect 5/5 for me.
I was able to get an early copy of this book. The only thing that makes me sad is I don't have more people to talk about it with, because I don't think I am going to be shutting up about this book for a while!
‘Destiny was pulling all the right strings, and how I loved it when she did that. It felt like a puzzle masterminded only for me—a trail of clues no one else could follow.’
Town of Shadows by Jessica Scarlett is hands down an IT book of the summer!
If you’re even slightly into fantasy, this one needs to shoot straight to the top of your TBR. If you loved Caraval, this has all the dazzling vibes—mystery, magic, riddles, and swoon-worthy romance—but somehow even better. (No shade to Caraval… this just hit me harder.)
I gasped, I held my breath, I scrambled to figure out the next puzzle right along with Dorothy—and that ending?? 🤯 Absolutely perfect. And yes, I already need book 2 yesterday.
This is the most perfect suspenseful, swoony, magical thrill ride through Victorian London and it’s available now—clear your schedule for this one.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Content/trigger notes: mild violence/peril/suspense, death of loved ones, blackmail, one small encounter with an assault, romance is kisses-only.
If you love Will Herondale 🦆 or the “Caraval” series 🎪 you NEED this book 📕 Jessica, you had me absolutely hooked from page one and I NEED book 2 🙏
Dorthy. This book was MEANT for her (which like yeah, but if you’ve read it you know 😂) the character growth she goes through is amazing 🥹 and the ROMANCE 💘 let’s just say I am READY to see what happens bc WHAT THE HEEECK 🤯
Ashley. WHAT 👏🏻 A 👏🏻 MAN 👏🏻 1- I adore that name on a man, what can I say 😂 2- it was so fun to slowly see him pulling the strings 👀 while simultaneously watching him become unraveled 👀 There’s so much more to learn about him ✨
Emme. We didn’t get a ton from her POV, but what we did get was GOLD 💛 I found myself looking forward to her chapters and I hope book 2 has more of her 🥰
Miles. HAOALWOPWDOWKAOKAJSIWN thats all. I will protect this man at all costs 😭 he had me crying real hard by the end and I NEED more of him in book 2 😇
The magic and mystery was SO GOOD 🤩 I already want to reread and see if what clues I missed the first time around 🔍 Truly this book was so so good.
ARE YOU JOKING?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?? Why did I read this before the second one was available to me?? THAT WAS SO GOOD!!
Okay. The character development in this book is absolutely unmatched. I feel like I know all of these people so well and I can feel all of their pain and anguish and joy and boy oh boy attraction. I think that kiss scene is my new Roman Empire.
I had so many different theories throughout this whole book about who the Rook was and who the Samaritan was and all of what was going on with Ashley and just all of the things.
My only complaint is that I don't have the rest of the series. I need answers!! And a happily ever after with them happy and in love and together. That is all.
I received an advanced readers copy through NetGalley, all opinions are my own.
I loved the characters and characterization. I loved the setting and the magic. I loved the multiple plot lines and how they intertwined. I loved the mystery and how it kept me on my toes and guessing even up to the last page. Hope the second book soon follows!
The epilogue promises more of the one thing I wanted to see more of in book one: Dorothy growing in using her own slant. It sure seems like we’re set up to see just that!
I got an early NetGalley copy in exchange for an honest review.
Outstanding Storytelling! This intriguing tale is a perfect blend of fantasy and Victorian historical fiction. With characters so mysterious and a setting so detailed and magical, it’s delightfully easy to be drawn into the shadows. And just when you think you know everything, the rules change. The ending is jaw-dropping; I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series!
If you enjoy mystical, romantic stories without the smut, I highly recommend this book. Jessica Scarlet is a gold star author!
I received an early copy of the book. This is my opinion.
Dorothy St. James cannot control her magic, so she keeps herself at home to avoid the authorities. When the Rook kidnaps her father, she wants to ask The Samaritan for help. The only person who seems to know the masked hero’s identity is Ashley Gardner. Dorothy strikes a bargain with him: If she can find and decipher his three clues, he will tell her who the Samaritan is. Can Dorothy win the dangerous game that Ashley set? Or will she discover far more than what she bargained for? And at what price?
Ashley Gardner uses his charismatic charm and magical abilities to get what he wants. He flits between polite society and the dark underworld, belonging to neither. Ashley fears that Dorothy could throw a wrench into all his schemes and plans. The clever chit insists that he reveal the Samaritan’s identity to her. Ashley knows the knowledge could put Dorothy’s life in jeopardy, along with his. Can Ashley keep Dorothy from winning his game? But at what expense?
I could not help but sympathize and empathize with Dorothy. Her inability to keep her gift from activating whenever someone used magic caused her to alienate herself. However, she did not spend all that time being idle or playing the damsel in distress. She instead helped her father with his scientific research. What I like the most is how Ashley gave Dorothy the impetus to step outside her comfort zone. She found herself doing things she ordinarily would not have before.
Ashley intrigues me! I am a sucker for the wounded/tortured types. Ashley fits the criteria perfectly. I feel the author barely scratched the surface with all that is troubling him. What I like the most is Ashley and Miles’ dynamics (or their bromance as some would call it). The two are opposites especially in behavior. They have also been through a lot together.
Miles easily became my favorite character! I simply adore his shyness around women. He fondly reminded me of an old role-playing character of mine – who suffered from the same affliction.
TOWN OF SHADOWS is the first book in Jessica Scarlett’s Victorian Fantasy series, SLANTED LONDON. I am new to this author’s works. The story’s synopsis is what drew me to request the book from Booksprout. The idea of a parallel universe set in a Victorian era yet intermeshed with magical elements. It intrigued me enough to take a chance on a new author and new series. In some ways, it reminds me of steampunk (one of my favorite genres) but without the mechanical jargon and technology.
The ending is what kept me from rating the story higher. I loved everything about the book until that point. It left me dissatisfied and disappointed. Others may like the twist. It just did not sit well with me.
I am leery about continuing with this series. Which is sad because half-way through I wanted the next book to center around Miles and Emme. Then there is Nicholas. The man gave off serious creeper (and eck) vibes.
TOWN OF SHADOWS by: Jessica Scarlett @thescarlettwriter
••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
📚-Book Release Date: July 1, 2025!-📚
~In Victorian London, magic earns you a noose... ✨Her magic is illegal. His lies are irresistible. And London’s most feared criminal is closer than either of them knows…
-TOWN OF SHADOWS, is a thrilling and captivating story that will capture and engage your full attention and carry you along for quite a puzzling suspenseful adventure through dazzling ballets, wild carnivals, and death-defying train rides. Filled precisely with sizzling tension, swoony romance, clever banter, fascinating and engaging characters, vivid details and descriptions, puzzles and riddles, great mystery, a dash of backstabbing, immaculate plot twists, and a gasping mind-blowing cliff hanger. Rest assured, that more is to come in a matter of months than years. My friends, this is such a unique and fantastic story set in the Victorian era (when gas lamps were most prevalent), but with MAGIC, and introduces fantastical elements into a historical timeline. It’s an incredible story that amazed me. I didn’t want to put this story down! This really is an intriguing clever story worth reading and soaking in completely. I am already for more to come! Well-done, @thescarlettwriter!📚💯👌❤️✨
“What if I didn’t want to be safe anymore? What if I wanted to be wild and adventurous like him? With him.”
•Content: magic, and magical creatures ish, some lies, a kidnapper on the loose, secrets betrayals, mentioning of a hand getting cut off and hangings-as a result of using magic, the word, “bloody,” slow-burn romance, light kisses only.
“I have been called a lot of things in my life,” I whispered. Her lips parted, and I felt my magic tiptoe in a circle around her, all on its own. “Man, thief, terror, saint, devil, and most recently, strange-but never a gentleman. I would beg you not to break that record.”
-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
"For anyone who's always wished they had a little magic inside them. You do."
🩵Thank you so much @thescarlettwriter for the arc of your amazing new book
I have been eagerly awaiting Jessica Scarlet’s next novel and it did not disappoint.
A magic-filled Victorian London. Dorothy is desperately trying to control her magic and avoid being arrested, but when the Rook kidnaps her father, she must find mysterious masked hero against all odds.
Enter Ashley Gardner, caught in a lie and requiring something Dorothy possesses, they strike a deal. Three clues about the hero and he gets what he needs.
This story kept me on my toes. It felt like Caraval meets Victorian England. HERE FOR THAT. The romance was swoony and I loved finding out more and more about the characters. Be warned, this is only book one and I will be (not so) patiently waiting for the next one.
Oh, my heart!! That ending…goodness! I’m excited to see what happens because I waaaant to know! The slow burn romance with large doses of magic was wonderful! I wanted to read this book by the cover alone. But guys…the inside was super good too!The plot twists were awesome and I found the multiple POVs made it a really interesting read.
I really liked Jessica Scarlett’s regency romance stories but this…she can do historomantasy too!!! (Stole that from Jessica’s stories 😆) I’m super intrigued to read the next story and love a good heartbreak. This is one I’ll be reading again soon!
Do not miss out on this one! This was my first book by Jessica Scarlett and it did not disappoint. I was hooked from the beginning. It was the perfect combination of fantasy, mystery and romance all set in historic London. I loved the multiple view points throughout the story. The twists and turns kept me guessing to the very end. The pacing and details were perfect. Overall such an enjoyable read. I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this book but all opinions are mine.
Well, it took a few days, (it's a 394 page book, but I was turning pages as fast as I could!) and I finished Jessica Scarlett's new book Town of Shadows. It was definitely unexpected! There are so many mysteries and secrets the characters are unraveling in this book. I was glued to the pages! The world-building was exceptional and believable for a historical and the magical elements weren't overwhelming, but truly added to the characters and story. The only thing that was hard for me was that if I had known this had such a cliffhanger ending, I might have waited until the next book was out! I want to start the next book right now! But I truly can say this book is one of my top three favorite books of the year so far. It was so, so good and I'm so glad I got it.
I'd like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to give a try.
At 50%, I have to ask: why. is. Ashley. playing games. while her grandfather is missing.
Our female lead's grandfather is taken by the Rook, and she believes our male lead (Ashley) knows who the vigilante who is out there rescuing those from the Rook is. When she approaches him, he sends her on some hide and seek, find the clues at an opera house performance instead of either asking her 'why' or telling her 'I'll see what I can do'.
There is also magic involved but the magic isn't very well developed and apparently in this world it's bad to either have it or use it.
It looked really good, but I'm going to have to stop here.
Out of respect for the author I am choosing not to rate it since I did not finish.
Wow! 🤯 This book was amazing! But you are pre warned it has an epic cliffhanger that will leave you not quite sure what to do with yourself until book 2 comes out! You will most definitely want to read this one with a friend so you can chat their ear off with all your theories and if you are like me you will want to instantly read it again to see all the sneaky little things Jessica Scarlett wove through this masterpiece! But I will not let myself! Too many books not enough time and all that, but instead I’m just going to sit here and stew about it! Then I will reread it before book 2 comes out which I am hoping is soon! 😅 This book is set in Victorian England with steampunk vibes and a super interesting magic system that I feel like we are still learning so much about. Its multiple POV which I enjoyed getting to see inside so many heads on this one and it really drives the story along. It’s full of mystery and puzzles and twist and turns and the middle of the book was definitely giving off some Caraval vibes and it was intense! And don’t even get me started on that kiss! 🔥The author definitely knows how to build tension and I’m here for it! Content wise this is a kisses only book with some violence and one part that is a little shocking but also genius and I loved the Author’s note about it in the acknowledgments at the end so don’t miss that! Do you typically read the acknowledgments? It’s always a must for me, I love any behind the scenes info I can get especially if I loved a book! All in all this was an easy 5 stars for me and my first book by this author although I have had some of her regency books on my TBR for a while and now they are moving up the list and I hope to get to them soon. I would definitely recommend this one- now someone recommend a great book for me to read next because I can’t stop thinking about this one!
This was such a well written and engaging story. I could not stop turning the pages and loved watching this mystery unfold. I loved the way magic was woven into Victorian England and thought the author did a great job creating this alternate history. I loved the characters, the story, the romance, the friendships and the mystery. It was all just so good....Chef's kiss.
I didn't realize this was going to be a series, but now I'm really looking forward to returning to this world and seeing what happened next. Definitely have a book hangover and I'm off to start recommending this to everyone because I want others to enjoy this as much as I did!
It took me a few days after finishing the book to finally get to this review. I needed the time to recover after being obliterated by this masterpiece of literary art.
Jessica Scarlett is a genius. Every book she releases captures my whole heart, but Town of Shadows took the rest of me as well. The mystery, intrigue, romance, tension, and EVERYTHING was just PHENOMENAL! I really just cannot put it into words. There were moments I was giggling like a child, and other moments I was screaming, wanting to know what would happen next.
Let me tell you how I feel about the characters now. I loved almost all of them, and the ones I didn't love were hated because they were written to be disliked. Every character was flawlessly written, but each character had their faults. Their depth was mind-blowing, and I found myself drawn to each of their stories and backgrounds. Dorothy was the perfect heroine. She is intelligent and wity. Oftentimes, I feel like the main characters fall into a category of being predictable, but Dorothy was written so well. She deserves the whole world. Don't even get me started on Ashley. *cue my internal screaming and crying* MY DEAR POOR SWEET ASHLEY! He needs to be protected at all costs. This man was everything. Brilliant, attractive, tender, hurt, lost, in need of a very long hug. I could go on and on. Ashley was such a surprise. There were moments that had me laughing and moments that had my heart aching for him. Then there is Miles and Emmeline. Only the most perfect side characters of all time. One of my favorite chapters revolved around an interaction they had. Emmeline is fiery and hilarious and daring. Miles is kind and heartfelt and scared out of his mind to talk to women. I can't wait to see where their stories go because they had me laughing so hard.
The magic system in this book was brilliant. Like WOW! The detail was insane and it was so hard to wrap my head around but so perfectly stated as well. I can't wait to dive deeper into all the details in the next book. The mystery, puzzles, and riddles were insane as well. SO PERFECT!
Then there is the ending.... I can't speak of this without my heart shriveling. That cliffhanger will live in my heart forever.
Overall, Town of Shadows was remarkable. The moments between Ashley and Dorothy were full of beautiful tension and longing. I simply can not describe it. From the bookstore to the circus to the dress to the painting, my heart was stolen by this story.
I LOVED IT!
I received the ARC copy of Town of Shadows. My review and thoughts are all my own and my full and honest opinion. I'll be praising Jessica Scarlett's writing until the day I die, and I'll be telling everyone I know to read this book. Get ready for an adventure!
Jessica Scarlett has written a suspenseful and unique romantic fantasy novel that kept me surprised and glued to every page. From the beginning of page one until the end, Town of Shadows captured my imagination and attention. I loved every minute of this riveting story set in a mystical and magical Victorian-era London. The character development was done superbly, with each vital character’s perspective lending insight into what each one is thinking and feeling while not giving too much away, keeping you deliciously guessing. Dorothy St. James is the consummate heroin full of courage, grit, and perseverance. Ashley Gardner is Dorothy’s perfect counterpart. He embodies the perfect mixture of mystery and charm with a dash of tortured soul and dangerous heroism. I love that this story had me guessing and on the edge of my seat with every page I turned. The chemistry, dialogue, and tension between the main characters were written perfectly. The romantic aspects of this story develop in a not-too-slow but just-right burn and at just the right pace with plenty of heart-melting, tension-filled moments to satisfy any lover of romantic fiction. By the time I read the closing chapter, I was left with my heart beating, eyes wide with surprise, and with anticipation for the second installment of this series.
You know the mark of a good writer as one who can not only tell a GREAT story but also draws you into the lives of each character so deeply that you come to care about how their story will turn out. Jessica Scarlett has accomplished both of those things with this book!
I HIGHLY recommend Town of Shadows to not only book lovers of Romantic Fantasy, Magic, Suspense, and the Victorian Era, but to ANYONE who loves a good story! Jessica Scarlett’s page-turning book, Town and Shadows, has it all!!.

🕯️ The vibes: - Victorian fantasy - Book 1 in series - Mystery - Magical realism - Closed door
🕯️ My thoughts: “In Victorian London, magic earns you a noose.” To avoid detection, Dorothy lives a quiet life behind closed doors with her nose in a book and her mind busy with science. When the Rook, a serial kidnapper, is on the loose and her father becomes the next victim taken, Dorothy takes a risk and strikes a bargain with the witty and mysterious Ashley Gardner. There’s riddles, ballets, wild carnivals, and conflicting feelings as she closes in on the Rook.
🕯️ This book has some fantasy elements but definitely maintains a magical realism feeling. The setting is London, which gave it a really cool Victorian feeling. The vibes felt very much like Sherlock Holmes for me.
🕯️ The intrigue throughout this entire book kept me so curious of where we were going. I had a lot of predictions, but the author kept the journey so engaging til the very end. (Also my predictions didn’t hold a flame to the actual direction we went 🤣).
🕯️ The crimes and the mystery gave a lot of twists and turns that kept me on my toes, and the romance gave me the angst that I love. Did I understand everything that was going on? No. But did I enjoy the journey from start to finish? YES. I have so many questions as I wait for book two.
If you are looking for a fantasy novel with a blend of Victorian Rngland then this is the book for you. Although practicing magic in this time period is often frowned upon and usually ends in serious consequences. On top of that there is a kidnapper on the loose and everytime a victim shows up they are insane. Overall this was a very exciting book to read. The characters were wonderful and the setting was just perfect. The story starts with being introduced to our main character Dorothy St. James. Dorothy has the ability to use magic but unfortunately doesn't have any control over it. In order to keep herself getting arrested she locks herself in the house and spends her days doing science experiments. Things go pretty well with her plan until her father gets kidnapped. She ends up teaming up with Ashley Gardner and has suspicions that he knows more than he lets on but flat out denies it. Knowing she won't find her father by arguing they put aside their differences and go about their work. Will she be able to find her father without everyone finding out about her magic. I received an arc copy from Netgalley and all opinions are of my own.
Ugh!!! I can’t believe it ended on such a cliffhanger! How dare you, Jessica, for doing this to me?! HAHA! To be fair, I was informed that it was going to have a cliffhanger ending, but still, I wasn't prepared for it :(
This book was phenomenal. I tore through the pages, completely hooked from beginning to end, and now I’m left desperately counting the days until the next installment drops.
What truly blew me away were the vivid, cinematic descriptions. Every scene felt so alive, like I had stepped right into the world myself. Jessica’s attention to detail pulled me in and never let go. And the theme? Utterly unique. It’s like a fusion of familiar elements from other stories I’ve loved, but with a bold new twist I’ve never seen done quite this way before.
If you love immersive world-building, creative fantasy, romance, and narratives that keep you up at night (in the best way), then you need this book in your life. Just… be ready for that ending. It hurts, but in the way all the best stories do.

This book is set in an alternate version of Victorian London one which has magic. That catch is it’s ok if you have it, but not if you use it. Dorothy is a young girl who’s hidden away most of her life due to the fear of the magic she has. This all changes when a mysterious villain known as The Rook takes her father. That’s where this epic adventure begins. This book is a lot of fun to read. It’s genre crossing. It’s got mystery and a little romance as well as fantasy elements so I think it will appeal to many. I loved the world building it was so very immersive. The characters are lovely they jump off the page and you are so invested you feel like they’re people you know instead of characters in a book. Lots of surprises I never was sure where the author was taking us but it was absolutely a fun ride!.

The book was amazing! I initially thought that the plot was pretty predictable and that the character development was mid. But the second portion of the book really suprised me and made me realise that every detail in the entire first half was there for a reason. The best part was looking back and seeing how the book blended together. The world the author built was also really amazing. I usually find magical worlds confusing or a little bit unbelievable because they say that is magical but they don't show it. But Jessica made it feel like I was really there, weaving in magical components into an almost real world. I also have to admit, I was initially really not into Ashley. He seemed cocky and generic, but later on in the book the character development seriously makes you fall in love with the character! He is honestly the best character that Jessica has created to date!
