In the days of old existed a woman warrior named [Shut Hell], the Evil One, feared even by the Mongols, said to be the strongest army in history.
At first, she was just a normal Tangut's soldier frightened by the mongol threat, but after coming close to death so many times, she found in herself a superhuman strength.
On the other side, a young mongol prince, Yurul, is fascinated by the Tangut's, his enemies' writings, and is worried for the future....
This is my first review... even though I've been on this site for a long time. I just wanted to say that this a beautiful manga. It captivates the reader with the characters emotions, and touches various subjects like death, what people are after they die and what writing means to us. I remember it once being described as, "Violent and barbaric, yet deep and beautiful." That describes it perfectly. If you like historical fiction, manga about warfare and deep contemplation, this a manga for you. I just really wanted to do this review because I want more people to read it. On another note, the timeline of this manga can be a bit confused, at least that's what I thought. The incidences are scattered throughout the volume, though there aren't many. This volume contains chapter 1-8. But then again this has time-travel too, so I'm not complaining. A beautiful manga nonetheless and I can't wait to see what happens next, and I also think this would make an amazing anime, possibly the next Shingeki no Kyojin but better... hopefully. Before I end, This manga is making me interested in Mongolian history. And I love things that make me want to explore things deeper.
Well... It's really... Special ? Idk but I don't understand a shit of what happened in this war in Mongolia. I found the plot really confusing and I'm fucking lost bc we have some panels in the beginning abt the current world with the reincarnation (??) of the 2 main characters who don't recognize each other first and then BAM back to the past (??) with the war. It has the potential to be great but the story is soooo confusing and if they wanted to do like a parallel universe or a reincarnation thing, they should have added more connection between the 2 reality (??) bc only 3 panels in the beginning is not enough. So, sorry not sorry but it's a no.
This review is for the entire series, as Volume 14 has no listing on Goodreads. Please note that this is a mature manga and it deals with sexual assault, murder, existentialism, inherited will, etc. It has some supernatural elements and is highly inaccurate to actual events, but there is still a bit that one can learn of history from this manga.
"Everything is going to disappear"
"Shut Hell" is a historical fiction that takes place at the height of Genghis Khan's reign. The manga, in truth, revolves around the survival of Tangut script (The Voice of Jade) — a real system of writing used for the now extinct language of the Western Xia dynasty. The desire to ensure people become 'immortal' through writing is in direct contrast to the Mongols' eradication of conquered cultures.
"This is how I became the old man you see before you today. Can you carry that weight?"
Shudo, Shut Hell's descendant, is willed into her body after her hanging and resurrects her for the sake of Yurul, the illegitimate son of Genghis Khan, and the writing of his people. Shudo's own future and that of Suzuki, Yurul's descendant, is in question alongside the lives of their predecessors. I was very disappointed to see that Suzuki's role in the story goes no further than being a blank slate damsel-in-distress, as it makes the back-and-forth between past and present seem almost entirely pointless.
Chapter 29 made me BAWL... that was a particularly tough portion to read. Shakira's love saving Veronika one last time made the kind of tears that hurt to let loose...
I will say that the story does lean too far into the supernatural at times. Shut Hell is a walking corpse that cannot die for the majority of the story. Harrabal shoots a greatbow made of fresh bamboo and uses an entire tree as an arrow at one point. Genghis Khan could only be felled in old age with a ballista. Veronika gets both of her legs amputated at one point and doesn't become even a little sickly. A 200 lb. beast of a man needs an instant amputation seconds after an extremely lethal poison is applied by a guy whose poison-filled arm looks like like a vacuum-sealed Grimace plushie. There is a little girl who touches the ground while singing a song in order to instantly knock out all horses in a wide range. Etc.
Even if some details didn't appeared very clear in my mind at first sight, i liked it a lot ! I loved the illustration of the book when i bought it, in the bookshop, and i find all the designs amazing ✨ I saw some little mistakes in the french traduction (yes, i'm french, and this is why my english may not be perfect ^^'), but nothing important. I'm very curious to know more about the two main characters and the link between the two worlds !
