A comprehensive introduction of maps and flags as a way to understand the world, this book does a beautiful job at looking at treating each country, from the largest to the smallest, with equal enthusiasm. The book begins with explaining the different types of maps and flags and taking a closer look at the meaning and purpose of each. The importance and meaning of flag shapes, patterns, and sizes are all examined and explained. A change from more western-focused map books we often see, this book looks at the world as a whole, providing a unique perspective. Eschewing mercator maps, in this book (as in the real world), Africa dwarfs Europe, and a giant Greenland features a callout that it's the largest island in the world. Similar fun facts appear on every page, shared by cheerful animals that are native to each country. Pages of flags and country facts are occasionally interrupted with fascinating looks at maps and flags throughout time, including an in-depth history of pirate flags and maps. A delightful book, full of great pictures and information. I especially liked how each country got its own little section describing its flag.
