This is my latest audiobook experience, and oh boy, I was glued from start to end, like any Netflix show we binge-watch.
The book revolves around the journey filled with loss, love, and healing based on the life of a young man, Zakiah Moreli, and how the feeling of complex love beats with the confusion in his heart.
The emotions, rawness, and bond of the Moreli brothers, along with magically woven emotions of love and attachment, make this audiobook have everything that can take you on a journey that doesn't feel like you are reading but feeling.
The author and her ideation with character development and curation are truly impressive; she has a perfect knack for how to build a world of story so effortlessly.
On his work, Narrator Ryan Pierson's narration came as a cherry on a cake. His transition from male to female character was so clean and can literally leave you with the thought that there might be many people who recorded the story. The guy is insanely not just talented but BRILLIANT.
Overall, a YA love triangle that's going to leave you with a brilliant story experience.

I am reviewing the audio version of this book. The narrator was fantastic. Ryan Pierson’s voice was crystal clear. He was great at switching between the characters and did a great job with the female voices.
If you want to read a story about a toxic love triangle, this is the book for you. Part of the toxicity arises from the triangle being composed of two brothers and a life-long friend. I don’t like love triangles, in fact they kind of make me crazy. It was refreshing that this one was from the point of view of Zakiah, the male not chosen, and that Iliana, the female member of the triangle, was not put on a pedestal. She is not a victim, no matter how she wants to be, and neither is Kallum, the chosen brother.
Right out of the gate Kallum interrupts his brother’s wedding. His objection? He loves Iliana and she loves him. The book goes back and forth between the present and the past to show the passing of time and how slow the progress is for Zakiah to mend his broken heart. It takes meeting Glory, a girl with her own history of a bad relationship, to snap Zakiah out of his heartache.
Things are not smooth sailing. Glory and Zakiah’s happiness is threatened by forces outside of their control. Kallum and Iliana also keep turning up like a bad penny. Their desire to rub it in Zakiah’s face is hard to ignore.
Iliana is still toying with Zakiah’s feelings and cannot tell the truth to save her life. If she’s not telling half-truths she is outright deceiving him. Kallum is even more insufferable. (If that’s possible.) He insists that he has no control over falling in love with Iliana. He loves to say he was shot by Cupid’s arrow—it’s a recurrent theme with him—and that somehow absolves him of responsibility for sabotaging Zakiah’s wedding. He and Iliana have this very insane belief that first love trumps all. In their mind it’s perfectly acceptable to ruin a relationship for the sake of first love.
Iliana’s secrets and manipulation come to light toward the end of the book. I don’t think Zakiah even sees how he’s being played. (We also meet the boys’ dad’s brother and family. They are a different kind of pot-stirring crazy, and probably criminals as well.) The ending is setup for the sequel, and I can’t wait to see how these plot twists turn out. I hope Iliana and Kallum get their comeuppance.

Summer fated to be mine stayed with me long after the last word i heard. At first, I thought it would be your standard teenage love triangle, but this book has far more substance. Zakiah's emotional trial-through to believing in that first perfect love with Iliana, through heartbreak over unrequited feelings, to acceptance of another's love with Glory-was just so raw, so unapologetically truthful, and just beautifully painful. I saw so much of my younger self in Zakiah-who loved all the way, saw no red flags because her heart so desperately wanted to believe in forever. The animosity between the Morelli brothers added a powerful layer, which pushed this story further than mere romance. It was about family, about betrayal, and about finding the strength to move on.
I think Glory was like the calm after the storm. Their relationship was given time; they did not rush into it, and I found that immensely refreshing. I really liked how the author presented second love as something to build upon, not something to substitute for the first. This book reminded me that sometimes we don't end up with the person we thought we'd love forever... and that's okay. Sometimes love kisses us softly the second time around, yet this love never lets go. Highly recommended.
