CATRIONA KING The Coercion Key. Book 7 in this fantastic series. What a read this is if action is your thing then you must read this book. Superintendent Craig and his team are trying to find out who is behind these suicides, action from start to finish. 5* 18 May 2017.
This series of crimes has been very different from other crime novels. There are murders and intrigue, oh yes, but I feel empathy for the murderers and understand their cause for killings. I do not know how I would handle some of the tragedy if I were in their situation. The author writes with equal time spent on each of her characters in the murder squad not giving most of attention to Marco Craig. He is the leader and we understand this without over emphasizing the amount of time spent writing about him. I only have one suggestion for the author. Please hire a better proof reader as to many typos and misspelled words.
Another great read from the Craig Crime Series. Fortunately for the reader, Catriona King has the imagination plus the knowledge of police procedure and all things medical and forensic to make each novel a page turner.....informative and credible and never humdrum or predictable.
This is the seventh in Catriona King's D.C.I. Craig series and there is no let up in the quality of the writing.
The series, as a whole, flows nicely, with occassional mentions of previous events, relating to both old cases and the lives of the members of Craigs' squad. With this in mind it is helpful to have read the previous books in the series ( but not vital - it also works as a stand alone novel ).
The novel starts with Easter approaching and the squad in a bit of a lull, with not much to keep them busy since the events of two months earlier ( see The Slowest Cut - book 6 ) but that soon comes to an end when Dr. Winter, the pathologist hands Craig three files. These files are for three separate suicides, all of which would go unnoticed if not for the fact that they all had plenty to live for and all wrote exactly the same worded suicide note.
I found this to be another step up in gear for the author, the idea of murder by suicide being a particularly clever twist - each book so far has had something different to work with, no formulaic same old same old here. The storytelling is confident, as I would expect, and the threat to the squad will have you heading toward the seat edge. After one particular incident ( you'll know it when you get there ) I was so stunned by what had happenned I had to put the book down and walk away as I wasn't sure I wanted to see the fallout.
And that, for me, is the true strength of this series. Yes, the crimes are intriguing, the story lines are gripping but the true heart of this series is the lives of the squad. I've found I really care about what happens in the day-to-day of the characters, be it the little things or the life changing events.
A top quality addition to a wonderful series (and surely only a matter of time before someone picks this up for filming )
Another strong enjoyable crime read from this novelist. My preference for this over The Slowest Cut is maybe to do with the reader rather than the writer, but hats off to Catriona King for producing consistent output at such a pace. The pace is too quick for Libraries NI who have not got the next DI Craig book in yet, and it might be a while, constrained as we all are by public spending cuts. What am I going to do now??
Superintendent Marc Craig and his team tackle another serial murderer. Always topical Catroina King keeps us up to date on and on our toes with the killer. A shooting adds to the suspense but why the killer wanted to is a bit weak. A new romance and the potential of a new recruit means I want to read the next book.
I am moving speedily through the Craig Crime Series and every book gets better and better! I have grown to admire Marcus Craig, and I just adore his little team even the mumsy Annette. These books are each a masterpiece of plot and humour! You can tell that Catriona King was previously a psychologist attached to the police. I love each book more than the book before and I really don't want to get to the end!
